Running for you life (from Shia LaBeouf)
He's brandishing a knife (It's Shia LaBeouf)

You're walking in the Greatwood
There's no one around and your phone is dead
Out of the corner of your eye you spot him:
Shia LaBeouf.

He's following you, about 30 feet back
He gets down on all fours and breaks into a sprint
He's gaining on you
Shia LaBeouf

This Halloween Hijinks thread is for Amalia and Melita. Occasionally I may pop in to mix things up, but you are welcome to PP the situation as you see fit. Please remember to use the NPC account when you reply, and try to post your replies within 72 hours of each other.

MELITA
She had entered the forest unsure what it was she wanted; hungry, desperate for something un-named, desiring the place without a reason. The girls lithe legs stepped carefully over roots and piles of sodden leaves covered in snow as she looked for a purpose, both deep within and among the trees. Maybe she simply wanted to be in nature, after the Blight had nearly ripped it from them all with it's violent and hungry reach.

It was in her mind to hunt, still, though - nature could be purposeful as well as beautiful. Bow drawn and body still, Melita waited patiently for a sign, a noise, some indication of life in the Greatwood beyond herself. Perhaps the call of a bird, sweet and soft, or the footfalls of a Luxere (not that she knew she had the tenacity to kill such a beast). Fangorn crouched quiet next to her, a mimicry of her own position.

Every so often, she heard a noise unlike any she knew to listen for. A stepping, almost, but one that sounded not quite humand not quite animal; something inbetween, feral, a beast with a chance at redemption. No matter how carefully she turned, it seemed nothing would show itself to her. A secretive creature. Well, she could wait.

When she was so alert, heightened senses picking out the woods like she was now, a bright eyed predator - it was instinct to turn as soon as she heard the crunch in the snow behind her. Bow drawn, string taunt, arrow ready to fire and pierce flesh, kill, end the flame of life so she could sustain hers -- but oh, not a woodland creature. Amalia. The girl lowered her bow, the weapon disappearing as her bracelet's magic worked.

"Oh, hello." She greeted, lifted herself up on her knees. No longer a beast in the woods, just for now. "Can you hear it too? That strange noise?" Perhaps it was good to check not only she alone could hear it. That it was not an illusion, a dream of the forest.

AMALIA
Her mind is perilously full today; filled with Deimos and their bird adventures, Deimos and their bed-adventures, Deimos and the dangers of LongNight. Then there’s the recovering Safrin to think about, her promise to Vi, and the daily prayers to perform. Piety is exhausting. And then last but not least, her beloved bakery. So the starry-eyed woman is lost in herself, walking along with her staff in the middle of the woods, when an unnatural sound catches her attention.

She freezes, half-shifting into the leopardess to better see and hear the thing.

But no, it is not a Wildwood creature, no boggart or Cat-Sith or even an unhappy Fae War Chief. It’s just Melita. Amalia relaxes, the fur on the back of her neck returning to skin as she recognizes the younger woman. Angular, bright eyes crinkle into a smile. Thank Safrin. “Hi, Melita. What brings you out here today?” Her happiness, however, is short-lived as the sound comes again and the Shield’s cat-like reflexes make her flip back towards where it might be coming from as her teeth bare in a silent hiss.

There is something out there. After a moment of strained listening, the Shield nods slowly, caution in her voice. “I do. Should I take a look?” she offers, going from leopard to owl in a strange, but very interesting shift. Big, yellow eyes look up at the redhead with a questioning gaze as she stretches her snow-white wings in preparation.

MELITA
The sight of Amalia half-shifted into a cat, feral and beast-like, both shocked and inspired a jealousy deep in Melita. How she wished to be more aware, quick, not beholden to the two humans hands that could only do so much; that seemed so clumsy, apelike, unsure compared to the animal instinct.

"Just wandering. Fangorn gets restless." She explained, smiling down at the little gourd, which ran about crunching the snow. This was truthfully an excuse. The girl's wild spirit often got too constrained by the inside world, felt like a flame trapped in a too-small lantern, isolated and cut off from the nature that brightened her life.

Amalia's shift once again captivated her. The lines between feline and bird, hard and soft; Melita was so distracted by the change that she forgot to say any words in response until she started back to life and nodded. "You can try. Be careful...there are dangerous things in the woods." She wasn't scared of them, but Amalia was softer, less world-weary, a baker and not a fighter like Melita.

Breath held she crouched, trying to make herself as small and quiet as possible so whatever it was would come out into the open. With a wave of her hand, Fangorn ran to her side and pressed in close. The both of them waited, tense, impatient.

Running for you life (from Shia LaBeouf)
He's brandishing a knife (It's Shia LaBeouf)
You're looking for answers but you're all turned around
He's almost upon Melita now
and you can see there's blood on his face
My God, there's blood everywhere!

Amalia doesn't spot Shia LaBeouf in time to stop him from jumping out of the shadows with superhuman speed, a knife in his hand as he lunges at Melita from behind, salivating, his mouth twisted in a strange, inhuman grin.

AMALIA
The owl nods and launches itself in to the air, throwing snow in its wake to create one giant white poof for a moment. Which, on second thought, may not have been such a great idea. Great job at being unobtrusive, AMALIA she would curse at herself in a few minutes, stupid ideas yet again. Because of course, Shia LeBeouf is an otherworldly force to be reckoned with - not entirely unlike the Blighted! - but also, like, far scarier. Because it’s Shia LeBeouf and he digs endless holes and he befriends heroic robots and he likes human flesh.

The girl’s eyes must be distracted, scanning the sky for Deimos’ winged form instead, and she misses the inhuman human until he makes a sudden move. A screech of fear hopefully alerts Melita to the danger behind her, as her beak can’t form any words. Turn around! Turn around!

Ah, if only Melita were Attuned and beloved.

Amalia drops as fast as she can, talons outstretched to strike the monster,  or land and shift and fight him as a fierce leopardess - far stronger than she ever is as a human.

MELITA
Turning around in time to see Shia just behind her, salivating and looming, the girl took a step backwards, but not in fear; to prepare for the fight. She was not one to back away, to cower; the sunshine girl had learned long ago to let her heart become hard as steel, to lift her weapons and defend herself relentlessly, determinedly.

So she did. Perhaps she was not Attuned, not blessed, not loved by the Gods, but she had her own tricks. Drawing the bow and setting within it an arrow bathed in flame she loosened the shot, not caring to know why this man was attacking, but only how to stop him. The arrow did not have far to travel at a close distance and once it had fired she looked to see Amalia's location.

At first she could not see her, then she saw the bird descending down. Melita smiled, glad the both of them were not the sort of people to give up without a fight. They would be victorious, she was sure.

AMALIA
The Shield watches as Melita draws her bow, stringing it with courage a well as a flaming arrow, and fires it straight at the attacking man. It sends Shia reeling, skittering, falling back from the flame-touched girl, swinging his upper body back away, which sets him off-balance and out of Amalia’s striking distance. Her talons close over empty air, the owl screeching in anger and defiance. Fuck!

They’re both failing, but hey, Safrin’s favorite lady has an abundance of luck to spare.

The two women may be struggling to strike Shia, but he isn’t in such hot shape either. He’s lost his knife in the snow, and when Owlalia lands, she transforms from one beast to the other. Now her fangs are bared in anger and she leaps towards the half-naked man, hoping to knock him down at the very least, and sink her claws into his stupidly bare (sErIoUsLy who goes shirtless in the winter unless your BLIGHTED?) man chest that can’t even begin to compare to Deimos’ abs and pecs and yummy, muscley goodness.

Yay! Melita's arrow hit! Shia used to be an adventurer like you, till he took an arrow to the knee.

Yay! Amalia also hits because somehow this coin flipping app only gives me heads. Shia does indeed trip, but the leopard's claws go wide and she finds that she's managed to take a mouthful of dirt, yuck. When her eyes clear Shia is-

Gone?

Maybe Shia's scared of cats? Maybe fire? Maybe he just got bored?

Now it's dark and you seem to have lost him
but you're hopelessly lost yourself
Stranded with a murderer
you creep silently through the underbrush

Aha! In the distance
A small cottage with a light on
Hope! You move stealthily toward it
but Melita's leg! Ah! It's caught in a bear trap!

MELITA
Her arrow rings true, but the girls cry of victory does not get to last long. The dark of the forest still overwhelmed, consumed her, made her feel small, claustrophobic, trapped. Amalia lept, a fierce animal in the frenzy of a kill (how bizarre that the shy baker could so quickly become a force of nature, in it's bloodied and wild glory).

When the strike was over she rushed forward, trying to use her strong legs to pursue the disappearing Shia. In the dark she was stumbling, determined but unsure of the layout of the ground - this would be her undoing.

The bear trap closed around her ankle and the pain was burning, intense, all-consuming (it was bad.) -- she screamed, a rare sound to come from the usually stalwart girl, but the metal teeth tearing into her flesh was enough to bring Melita to panic as she fell hard to the ground. "Amalia, help!!"

AMALIA
No, no one in her life would have ever thought that the shy, waif-like girl, pious and delicate and all too cowardly at times, would have turned out to be a fearsome leopardess. Least of all, Amalia. But Safrin makes her strong, Vi gives her power, and she will stand against the darkness and death and that, apparently, includes Shia LeBeouf.

See, this is what happens when you don’t listen to the Old Gods. Barriers fall. The monsters get out, and new monsters get in.

When the leopardess’ eyes clear, the girl can see that Shia has disappeared, and is both relieved and slightly disappointed. Before she can suggest to Melita that maybe they should leave the woods and go get someone stronger and smarter than they, the flame-kissed girl rushes into the darkness. The only thing Amalia can do is follow her. Padding frantically after the too-brave girl, it is only luck that places Melita’s foot in the trap and not her own paw. The Sheild recoils, shifting to her bird form in order to avoid potentially tripping another one. She lands lightly on the steel part and inspects the device (they don’t use these kinds of things here - they are an Outlander invention, one that stinks of cruelty, and Amalia hates it).

There’s a trigger release - and then she spots the light of a cottage nearby. Owlalia forms a plan and then shifts back to her human form. “It’s ok, I’m here. I’ll get this off and then you wrap your leg really tightly, ok?” Pressing down on the trigger to open the vicious jaws, she holds them agape long enough for Melita to hopefully get her leg out. One problem at a time. That’s what Wessex and Deimos would do.

Now... to solve the blood loss problem.Gods, she wishes Deimos were here.

Amalia successfully releases Melita from the bear trap. Somewhere far behind them, rustling can be heard.

MELITA
The pain is all consuming and Melita struggles to think clearly through it, her leg twitching as she tries to pull it out of the trap; of course each tug only sunk the teeth in further. When Amalia comes after what feels like an eternity, sets her free, she nearly cries in relief. Swiftly she frees herself, clutching at her leg and feeling hot blood leak through her fingers.

But there is only so much feeling sorry for herself she can do. With gulping breaths as if taking in the air for comfort she rips the seam of her skirt, managing with some effort to take out a piece of fabric big enough to wrap around her leg and pull tight. Instantly the cloth turns red and she knows from experience the wound will not be pretty, but she has never cared about that.

It is a miracle she notices it in her pain, but Melita freezes as she hears the rustling. "Amalia, let's go to the cottage. Now." It will not be a quick walk, not with her leg in the condition it is, but she starts anyway, determinedly limping towards the light, balancing herself on trees.

AMALIA
It must be fate that Amalia was (conveniently) walking with her staff that night. However, in her eagerness to be a tough, tough leopardess, she left it back at the site of their initial scuffle. The blood - it reminds her that she’s left it behind (she wasn’t wearing her bracer, stupid, unprepared girl), and she can’t leave such a magically and emotionally precious item behind. Her life is entwined in those antlers, her friends are in the wood, her love smiles when she uses it. It cannot be abandoned to the savage likes of an utterly demonic Shia LaBoeuf.

They must go back. She’ll get it, and then she can heal Melita. And then they can get the fuck out of here.

But Amalia, too, can hear the rustling behind them. You don’t need an Attuned’s half-human, half-animal ears in order to hear that kind of thing.

“Stay here,” she whispers to Melita, “the cottage is too far. I’ll compel a couple of wolves to protect you while I go get my staff.” She grabs Melita’s bloody hand and squeezes it tightly. “Don’t worry. I’ll be right back”

Amalia takes a moment to stare off into the dark, calling to the fierce, pack-like creatures who must haunt this area. The Shield is true to her legend title and will not leave for the staff until she’s sure Melita is protected.
