Deimos

They hadn’t been subject to unsettling news in quite some time, but as the notes came in a flurry from courier to Warden, the wariness and apprehension had begun to unfurl through his chest. In no time at all, the meaning to the existence of the Monster Hunters Guild only became readily more apparent. In his own manner of haste, he sent a range of missives to fellow members, while he scoured for information, snagged journal pages, and ensured others knew of impending departures, before venturing towards the Feverlands.

This land wasn’t a particular favorite for multitudes of reasons, but the growing concern for time, and the potential of what they were facing, left him stoic, reticent, and lockjawed. Belial and Zuriel’s accompaniment helped, but only to assuage some semblance of consternation contorting within his ribs. Turning to those gathered at the swamp, early morning and with a generous amount of fog, the ghoulish notoriety of the place didn’t fade away with the rising sun.

His eyes turned to each of them, a long and slow breath contorting from his lungs, before he began. “We have been sent word that there is a group of merchants lost in the swamp. They have been missing for several days. The supplier believes they were headed up this path,” and he pointed to some trod upon marsh, indented with traces of wagon wheels. “They could be lost, or there could be something more sinister afoot.” Which led to their inclusion. “The Feverlands host a wide variety of flora and fauna,” a warning, though he began to pass out the copied journal pages for everyone to see. “We will start here,” his jaw jutting towards the used route, “and see what we find.”

Hopefully the people, and not anything else.

How do I keep myself from fallin' apart when I ain't never felt part of a whole?
When Deimos calls for her, she comes without question. While she is more pragmatic and willing to overlook lost lives at times, Caido is a softer land in many ways, and she will take any chance possible to showcase the might and importance of Abandoned these days. She lingers near his side as he explains their approach and ultimate goal, taking the pages he hands her and flicking through them as she listens.

Readjusting her waist pouches and double checking all her weaponry and clothes before they begin to head out, the Valkyrie takes an additional moment to limber up. While it would be great to find the merchants and nothing more, she highly doubts that will be the case, and would prefer not to be caught equally unprepared as the men they are trying to rescue. Waiting for Deimos' go-ahead, she stretches out her shoulders and ankles, already dreading the Feverlands' terrain and how it would surely try to dissuade them.

Noah wasn’t sure why the people they were coming to rescue had chosen to come here. What was so precious within the Feverlands that they needed to travel far and deep into the death-ridden place? Thankfully, His overarching sense of justice overpowered his incredible prejudice against what he decided was stupidity, and he came with the Sword anyways.

Vi’dore kept close to Zuriel as they traveled (well, as close as she would let him), taking confidence from the mare as well as his bond mate. Eira was out of sight, taking her time scouting from the sky and taking any time she needed to rest in the heat of the place. Noah asked all the questions he wanted to while they traveled across the world for this task, and now was mostly silent as he waited for Deimos to detail what their plan was going to be.

Noah comes with everything listed on his profile but NOT his spear or Sentinel’s Coat, a quiver with 12 arrows, and a hunter’s pack.

Now was the chance for Darkeye to prove himself. He had followed the call of Deimos. He had already been a few times in the lands here on the road. However, that was before the war and the permanent change of the land. It had been a dangerous country even then. He had also planned to survey and investigate the land for a long time... He saw the whole thing here as a good opportunity.... But now he had to focus on something else.... He assured Deimos that he would follow the instructions.

He has the spear as well as the axes with him. He has weatherproof clothing and high leather shoes for the ground... He doesn't know if the creatures lurking underground are carnivores or not. He reckoned there was little chance of finding them alive. He preferred to leave Mahriel at home... He could not guarantee their safety here.

Deimos

They were all quiet, contemplative, to which the Sword appreciated, giving all of them valuable time to concentrate. Even as the morning sun pressed on, the fog lingered, and so he unfurled the rapid incantations of his Mastered Air, peeling away the layers of roughened, trodden path. As the mist lifted, cascaded, and rippled out of their boundaries, enigmas, probabilities, and platitudes became clear.

Three trails laid before them – forking off to the left, right, and straight ahead. The telltale glimpses of murk, grime, and swamp life remained residing there – but bizarrely, all of them still had wagon wheel lines.

Some had differences though; the left boasting a pathway already receding into water, as if the swamp were threatening to reclaim it. The right held a thicker fog, obscuring the rest of it from sight. Straight held its own appeals in seeming to be firmer land, but they likely all knew better than that.

Deimos’ brow furrowed, and he glanced to everyone in turn, permitting another long breath to cascade. He knew better than to suggest splitting up the party – tempting as it was. “Each of these seems to have had travelers,” and he pointed to the lines still firmly ensconced into the muck. “Which way do you want to go?” From there, they could decide together, and move forward in the same way. If worst came to worst, there were the options of backtracking.

How do I keep myself from fallin' apart when I ain't never felt part of a whole?
The fog that lingers seems to be an ominous portent for the journey they are taking, and on top of that it is quite the annoyance as a traveling party. Deimos' magic is quite helpful, though she lends her own here and there as needed to try and better their views.

Of course, it's not long before they reach their first true obstacle, which is both simplistic and infuriating in its nature. Considering the three paths before them, Ru examines the signs of passage with sharpened hawk-eyes to try and peer further down the trails ahead. "If they had wagons, they couldn't have gone left. If they'd remained on the primary pathway they would have been found more easily by those concerned or fellow merchants. Perhaps we should try to the right first." The one shrouded by thick fog - perhaps a temptation for a shortcut? There is always the possibility they stuck to the main route, but then they would have had less of a chance of getting lost. Set upon? Now that was a different story.

Ru votes the right path.

The fog was thick and nearly choking. Noah crouched down and used his partial shifting to enhance his senses. Deimos raised some of the fog and, just as readily as him, the Valkyrie began to investigate. Not one to be complacent just to make things easier, Noah listened intently to Hotaru as she gave her opinion. "I agree." He finally said, simple and straight forward.

Eira landed on a tree just a few meters ahead of them, eyes cast the way Noah and Hotaru had decided. She chirped some, shifting her weight. "Eira agrees." Noah stood back up and looked to his companion, her concern and discomfort easily tangible to those around them even without being bonded to her soul.

Darkeye

Darkeye looked at each track a little more closely and considered how he would do it. A stable path would be his solution, but it was here on all three tracks that might have split. But the traces of a fight he could exclude so far. "I would have taken the middle way in their place. Stable enough for a car with a load. Especially in an area like this, you don't want to get stuck. I'm surprised there are so many wagon tracks here."Darkeye says and tries to find an explanation. He didn't know how much traffic comes through here. In the past, the area was rather avoided.

He looks around for other tracks... Of a hint where they could go

Deimos

With a pause on movement, for the moment, Deimos and Ru both persisted in unfurling further portions of the land from the fog – outstretched columns of bog revealed, where gnarled, twisted roots persisted, as if the tangled proportions might snag at ankles and boots. He tilted his head though, listening all the while to their contemplations, accord, agreements, and thoughts on the current matter. “We can try right first,” and here he turned to Darkeye, to ensure he’d been heard. “And if it does not provide us with anything, we can return and go straight.” He wondered the same, however – had the merchants been forced to double back? Try and try again?

From there, with more of the murky, yellow mist lifted, the wagon tracks were much easier to spot. They converged along the rubble road, mastering and mustering over swamp, and something contorted at the back of his mind – some bristling formation of remembrance –

Until they turned a corner, and the recognition scorched at the home tucked off the beaten path, outlined by twisted trees and overgrowth. Brows furrowed, he glanced back at the other three, the deep rumbling piercing through. “I think that is Mildew’s house.” And if there were wary, inexperienced travelers bumbling and fumbling their way through the Feverlands, wouldn’t it be tempting to knock on a demigod’s door? “We can check out the surroundings,” and maybe see if she was home and heard anything; unaware of her demise some years before.

--

Investigate the area around Mildew’s home!

Options:
- Knock on the door and see if anyone or anything is around
- Take to the sky and look above for signs of life/travelers
- Walk around the house
- Go ahead on the path, but don’t stray too far from the group.

No post order! Deimos will take the last, remaining option.

Ever the mediator, at least in positions such as this, Noah listened well to how Deimos pacified the ideas and thoughts of all of his guild members. The way Deimos spoke it was not lost on him — and giving Darkeye dignity was much needed for the cleric. Noah mounted Vi’dore and went off on the path with his comrades.

The house rose out of the distance. Everything about it reflected the place it inhabited. Noah could feel his unicorn’s muscles tense beneath his legs and he wrapped a hand in the stallion’s neck, the other hand reassuring him with a stroke on his shoulder. Eira chirped and clacked her beak as she took to a low glide, following her bondmate as he rode around the house.

Noah and his companions search around the outside of the house!

Darkeye just nodded. He wanted to try to make everything safer. He kept a close eye on the surroundings and was glad he was with Deimos and Noah. He had seen the woman before, but he wasn't sure where... But at the moment, it didn't matter. Where the danger was here and whether they could rescue the missing people, he couldn't say yet.

Because he couldn't take to the air. And he was also not the one who, in his opinion, should have such conversations. He indicated with a few hand signals that he would carefully look ahead to find signs and make the way a little safer for the others.

but now it is a competition of whichever is heavier:
my will, or the pull of gravity into the grave
Darkeye makes a good argument, but as Deimos had said majority would rule. Either way, Ru suspects they will end up covering much of the ground in the area and will likely backtrack regardless. Though the right hand path is rather thick with fog as well, Deimos and Ru's magic is as helpful as ever in clearing the way. The house is unexpected to say the least, but apparently Deimos knows - or knew - whoever the inhabitant was. Not surprising; Hotaru often considers that he knows more people than even herself, who long considered herself to be a socialite.

"If you are familiar with them, you should be the one to knock. No need to startle them." Though privately Hotaru doesn't think there is anyone inside to surprise given the dilapidated conditions of the house. Transforming takes a brief moment, and she takes off from the ground on golden wings to climb into the sky and observe the surroundings with sharp eyes and ears to discern any life aside from the men beneath.

Deimos

It would take careful, scrutinizing eyes to snag clues, if any, that lurked about the eerie house and its nearby scenery. Perhaps the most glaring was the silence itself; wrapped around the surroundings of murk and fog, strangled and smothered away.

As Noah set about around the homestead, he’d be able to notice wagon tracks, deeper and deeper into the mud, until it seemed to almost claim it – and dead ahead, were the remains of it; broken, shattered, incapable of going forward into the muck and grime.

Darkeye made a choice to go beyond – but just so – away from the group and along potential tracks. Unaware at what the Sentinel might’ve found, for now anyway, the cleric would be able to perceive footprints, perhaps a set of three or more, haphazardly strewn about. Had someone fled in a panic? Strangely enough, they led away from the residence.

The venture of Hotaru, skyward, ensured she too would catch sight of the wayward wagon, with oxen nestled nearby, grazing on whatever grass they could snag. Broken away from the merchants’ vessels, they seemed entirely unbothered by the wood and rope contraptions around them – maybe signifying this had either happened days before, and they’d grown used to the movements and motions.

Which left Deimos to knock upon the door – willingly to do so regardless, in hopes of either meeting up with Mildew or snagging at other information. Rapping his knuckles against the frame, he heard nothing in response…only for the aperture to swing open, and the hollow nature of its portal to come to light. Narrowing his eyes and stepping within, the Sword only found traces of dust, debris, and the strange semblance others had been here. Cans of food opened and left on the table, but strewn, fallen over, as if everything had been in a rush.

Strange and bizarre but layered and hidden with enough indications to at least gain some knowledge.

Best to go tell one another.

The mud sucked at the unicorn's hooves, but his strong legs kept them from sinking entirely. He snorted and his ears pinned with his displeasure, and Noah had to coax him forward with their private bond. The wagon tracks they found and followed were deep ruts, crazy and yet undisturbed. Eira chirped overhead and Noah lifted his eyes from the tracks.

There's a wagon here. Destroyed. Noah declared over the attuned bond, knowing that if Deimos and Hotaru were within close enough range that they would be able to hear his voice. He slipped off the unicorn's back (ungracefully, with the way the soil tried to claim him), and tried to make his way towards the wagon. He looked all around it, trying to decipher what may have made such a mess of it.

Noah does not go back to Deimos, but instead takes time to inspect the destroyed wagon.
