Appearance
Mallorie is not ugly, but isn’t exactly beautiful either. She’s most accurately described as ‘plain’, and would be otherwise forgettable if not for having the personality of a boulder and pale grey eyes that are more eerie than enchanting (she has been informed her gaze is disconcerting, and used it to great effect in her previous life as a guard). Her hair is long but usually tied back for practicality, and the idea of wearing make-up or ‘adornments’ beyond cultural or religious markers has never really occurred to her. She is painfully practical even when it comes to clothing.
Mallorie dresses unremarkably, the most fancy thing she wears is the grey-blue cloak she wore as a guard. She carries a shortsword which isn't particularly special, except for how average it seems to be. Characteristically unsentimental, she hasn't named it, and she mostly keeps it relatively hidden beneath her cloak because she knows all too well the risks of flashing a sword around.
Of otherwise average height and build, she is in the shape of a person used to running around and occasionally breaking up tavern brawls; not the most obviously muscled, but also doesn’t look like a stiff breeze would knock her over. She has a scar across the knuckles of her right hand which was the result of her work as a guard, and a nastier scar along the left side of her torso, which was not. This scar is white with age, though the more discerning could tell it was the result of a blade. The scar on her hands is fractal, most likely glass. She talks about one of them, but not the other.
She was, prior to her arrival, in ownership of somewhat much pointier ears. While they’re still pointier than average, they are distinctly human now, something that leaves her somewhat unsettled, though little else physical has changed.
Personality
Despite her woodsy name and origins, ‘stony’ is usually the first impression Ms Woodbourne leaves. She is not unpleasant, but the concept of small talk escapes her, and she is single-minded to a fault. The one enduring relationship she ever had was the result of repeated encounters, and in terms of how it occured it was more like developing a tolerance than building a friendship.
She does not talk much about herself - she rarely finds it relevant. She especially does not talk about her family, or events that preceded her leaving the forest of her birth and becoming a guard in a nearby city. She has the world-weariness and perpetual vigilance of one who has seen war. But then again, maybe she’s just Like That.
Easily mistaken for aloof on a first meeting, she’s not really a hardass so much as she’s just a fan of following the rules. Rules are nice. Rules are simple. Rules are also manmade and she trusts some rules about as much as she trusts some men, i.e. not much. She will not allow an injustice to take place just because a law demands it, and will not be swayed from finding the truth because it is uncomfortable. As a guard she was as much as nuisance to the authorities as to the criminals.
Emotion is a stranger to her features but it’s clear her edges have been softened by something or someone, and occasionally something slips through to suggest she’s less less granite than she seems.
She does not smile, an oddity for someone whose mouth seems to be made for it.
History
Mallorie was raised in a wood - hence the name. She left and, an unspecified amount of time later, found herself working as a guard in a city. Here she discovered a talent for investigation and wrangling drunks. She also (reluctantly) made her first friend - his disappearance led her to turn full-time investigator and following his trail led her here.
