Appearance
Life isn’t easy in Halo, and that shows in the set of Elena’s jaw, the lines around her eyes and mouth, and the limp in her step. Her dark brown hair is down to between her shoulder-blades, threaded with only a few strands of silver, and kept in a tight braid while she works. Brown eyes can be gentle with her family and friends, or chips of mountain ice when angry. And while protecting Snowcloak might have taken some of her mobility, it hasn’t stopped her from keeping in as close to fighting shape as she can manage. She has scars up and down her right leg from where an ursur mauled her, along with many smaller scars scattered all over from two decades of service in the Guard. Her clothes are mostly leathers and furs earned through her own hard work. Her cane is made from the carved bone of the ursur that injured her, given as a gift by her fellow guards.
Personality
Tough and deemed virtually unshakable by many who know her, there are those who remember her explosion a decade ago. She tries to stay honest to her emotions and doesn’t let much frustrate her, if she can help it. Experience has taught her that it just isn’t worth her time or energy to get angry at every clumsy mistake or idiots getting mouthy during trade negotiations. Her temper, when riled, is glacial: slow, cold, and inexorable. Most of the time, Elena is calm and straight-forward. She’s patient with her apprentices and has a fondness for children, but she won’t let either get away with anything either. Showing respect to others and taking responsibility for one’s actions is paramount in her eyes. True laughter from her is rare, but she’s generous with her quiet smiles. She has great faith in the Old Gods and keeps small shrines to Mort, Vi, and Rae in her home.
History
Elena grew up surrounded by her extended family, raised in a single house alongside her siblings and cousins. She was eager to learn and support them, caring for the youngest until she was old enough to help with the kills the hunters brought in. And, as soon a she was old enough, hunting turned into a position on the Guard, keeping Snowcloak safe. Trained with sword and bow as soon as she’d been old enough to hold them, the training of the guard was a natural fit. She married into a family of tanners and leatherworkers, learning their trade almost without meaning to.
It was when she was in her early 40’s that tragedy struck. Illness swept through Snowcloak, taking many victims, her spouse among them. Grief made her reckless and angry. She went too hard in training fights, charged into fights without thought. During a hunt for a particularly vicious ursur, Elena’s recklessness cost her as the bear caught and mauled her right leg. She survived only through luck and an attentive healer, though she fully believes that it was the Gods' will that she live.
Since her injuries meant she could no longer effectively serve, she took up her spouse’s trade in earnest, learning to tan in the skins brought in by the hunters who kept Snowcloak alive. She eventually took over as head of the tannery and trained her own apprentices, but she has never remarried.
Other
Elena walks with a limp and cannot run without pain. She’ll forgo her cane when in the tannery, but uses it everywhere else. She still practices her fighting skills: hand-to-hand, sword, and spear, keeping as sharp as her body will allow.
