Character Information
AppearanceHe's otherwise fairly unremarkable looking, you think as you take a second glance. He's tall and lanky, probably just over six foot, and not a whole lot of muscle to his almost scrawny frame. His skin is relatively pale, and he has shoulder length dirty blonde hair. Bit of an odd looking fellow, you think. As you analyse his features, you think, well, he's almost pretty, rather then handsome. His eyes are wide set, almost slanted. They are a dark, non-descript hazel. Nothing that anyone would write home about. His nose is thin in a sharp, angular face with a firm jaw, but his mouth is soft and full. It changes his face from something that could easily be forgettable, to something more attractive. His thinness, coupled with that mouth, could almost have him pass as androgynous, but his jaw is too stern, his upper lip darkened with stubble. Personalitye has a great survival instinct, a real drive to protect his interests. In his old life, that meant dropping those around him when they stopped 'adding' and started 'subtracting' from his quality of life. Whether he was born with a lack of sympathy for others, or has gained it over time, Arlo has a definite hole where most people hold their interest in the rest of humanity. He has empathy, sure. He can understand what others are going through, he just doesn't really care unless it effects him personally. If it works for Arlo, that's all that matters. Arlo is intelligent, quick-witted and logical, but also lazy enough that he will fob off anything difficult to a charitable 'friend' if he can. Now he is in a situation where he has to do everything himself, he should have no problem getting his bearings and using his relative intelligence to help him improve his circumstances. On the surface, Arlo is charming, friendly, sociable. He's good at making friends, and enjoys that process. In the end though, it's all about what he can get out of the friendship. In his previous life, good friends were ones he could rely on to give him a few bucks, or let him sleep on their couch. Friends-no-longer were ones who wanted the same treatment back. Give and take is a foreign concept to Arlo, as is cooperation, playing well with others, and compromising. That's not to say that Arlo is innately a bad person. He has some good character traits: he's fairly difficult to anger, he has a great sense of humor, and he can get along with most people. He also holds grudges, is fairly self-pitying, and entirely aware of his own selfish nature. He is reflective but unwilling to change; he believes that most people are like him, but portray that they are selfless and charitable on the outside. In the end, it is his understanding that all creatures do things for others, so they can get something else in return. He's just a bit more open about it. HistoryLike most individuals who are given to privilege, Arlo wasn't really aware of it. He squandered his opportunities, sailing through education on his laurels alone, uninterested in putting a thimble full of effort in. He was interested in having enough money that he could live how he liked to. He had no aspirations for an exciting career path, or to make a change in the world. The world worked just fine for Arlo, thank you very much. Once the education part of his life was finished, Arlo spent his time hopping from job to job, unable to hold one down for any real frame of time due to his inherent laziness, and an inability to show up on time or show the appropriate amount of gravitas for a workplace. While it would be nice if Arlo got his just desserts and ended up on the streets, struggling, his family wouldn't have allowed that. They continually propped him up as he needed it, continually rewarding and endorsing his behavior, even subconsciously. Just like he couldn't take his work seriously, he couldn't take other people seriously, either. His friends were only his friends if they were agreeing with him, supporting him, helping him out; otherwise he had a notorious cold shoulder. His lovers were the same. He had a handful of people he continually strung along, as well as a continuing rush of one night stands. He was notoriously good at turning the tables on hurt lovers who said he was cruel, who said he was selfish, reminding them that he'd never claimed it would be anything except what it was. Thankfully, karma did indeed catch Arlo. On a walk out in a nearby forest, Arlo managed to stumble into a portal, which took him all the way The Spire, Hollowed Ground. Not only did it dump him unceremoniously in a place where he could no longer rely on the good will of others to survive, but it had the nerve to change him into an ascended. Clearly, this land and its gods had a warped sense of humor. OtherA rough estimate of this character's damage potential is as follows:
