Appearance
Martha is a caramel beauty with coal black eyes who doesn't care how people think she should dress. She's of a slender build, but not too thin, and certainly not too muscular. Whenever her ebony shoulder length hair isn't laying about her shoulders, it's kept up in a sloppy ponytail or bun, just to get it out of the way. She wears what's casual and comfortable for her, usually opting for pants over a dress or skirt. She will dress up for events, but that's about it. The Aplomado Falcon is very similar to the peregrine falcon in many ways. Most of their markings are similar, except the Aplomado is more of a caramel color rather than the silver of the peregrine and is known for having a black "sash" across it's chest. They don't get very large, only about 12-16 inches. In Martha's case, she's about 14 inches in height when shifted, and weighs less than a pound.
Personality
True to the behavior of the aplomado falcon, Martha is a sassy young woman who isn't about to let someone tell her how to behave. She tends to speak her mind to whomever she wants, regardless of rank, or size. It might get her into trouble one day, but it was a demeanor she developed after dealing with many difficult patients. But she's also headstrong, which likely doesn't help.
But for those who don't receive her tough love, will find that she has a sweet and caring heart. She believes that no matter the person, there's always something worth fighting for underneath the exterior, and she will do everything in her power to bring it forward.
History
Born on her family's vineyard to original parents, Martha seemed to have an easy life ahead of her. Learn the family trade, then take over the family business making wine and maintaining the vineyard. But life can never be THAT easy, can it?
Her mother died in childbirth when Martha was eight years old. Her younger brother survived, however, but he was spoiled. As the only male heir, he instead was taught the family trade of making wine, the vineyard now intended to be given to him. Martha had to learn what she could from the sidelines, but was still expected to be able to sell their family's goods.
That was how she met Remi Abruzzo. Their fathers had a bit of a rivalry with one another, each trying to outsell the first. With their businesses fairly close together, it was rather common for the two children to be in the same vicinity as one another. They became quick friends, much to the anger of their fathers. The men tried everything they could to get the children to hate one another, but it became more of a game instead.
But for all their antics as children, they did eventually pave their own ways as Martha entered adulthood. She began her studies in the medical field, finding that she enjoyed learning both human and animal medicine. Her father continued to insist that she work in the family business, wanting her to to work under her brother, which she was having none of. She continued her studies for another couple of years, until her father sought to bring her under control with an arranged marriage.
It was an abusive relationship. Her fiance sought to bring her under control by belittling her and her hobbies, and slapping or hitting her when she would leave to practice medicine. Eventually, the man became impatient, and sought to take what would become his once they said their marriage vows. Enter in, once more Remi Abruzzo. It was a case of being in the right place at the right time. He stopped by to pay his old friend a visit, and heard her screams for help. He let himself in through a window, and made a mess of Martha's fiance, attacking him with his own beak and talons and saving her from disgrace. Angry, the man called off the arrangement, much to the fury of Martha's own father, and he left.
The events of that day led Martha to seek to become a shapechanger at the age of 20, hoping to give herself a bit more protection and confidence should she ever have to deal with a man like that ever again. To her surprise, her shift ended up being the Aplomado Falcon, a fellow bird like Remi. Remi also proposed an interesting idea to Martha, suggesting they fake an engagement to deter other men from pursuing her. She loved the idea, and from then on they acted as if they were truly in love and ready to wed at any given time.
Again, this angered her father, not only was his daughter not interested in the family wine business, even though she knew everything about the ins and outs of it, but now she was insisting she was engaged to his business rival's son! Six months passed, and out of spite to both Martha and Remi, he sought to separate them for good. He decided to fund Martha's medical schooling, and sent her as far as he could to a very prestigious and expensive school. It was worth the price to keep the two apart.
Martha still found that she loved learning about both the animal and human medical fields, and worked twice as hard to learn everything she could about it. She graduated from her schooling at the age of 22, and opened her own practice, focusing primarily on shapechangers. She could treat their injuries regardless of what form they came to her in, and she was proud of what she could do. She a letter to Remi, hoping he could celebrate with her. But he would never write back, as he had already been sent through the portal to Northaven.
She didn't have much time to reunite with her dear friend in Northaven, as soon after her arrival, he vanished. Martha has been worried for him ever since.
