Appearance
Saartjie comes from strong and very old Korofi bloodlines. Like the women that came before her she is tall and thin -- dainty, some Korofi men would say. She has a pretty face, elegant and refined bone structure that is a testament to her noble heritage. A spattering of freckles span the bridge of her nose and both cheeks. Her eyes are a pale silvery blue, lined by thick dark lashes. Pale, wavy hair falls down to the middle of her back, but it is often tied up into a ponytail or braided.
As a child she was not allowed to run and play or to rough house with her brother for fear of being scarred, or marked. Because of this she has very little in the way of scars on her body -- there were no skinned knees or elbows from her youth. The only marks she has come from her adulthood -- a scar on the palm of her left hand from her marriage ceremony, and a tattoo on her right ribcage, marking her as unfit to bear children.
Personality
There are many different words that those who know Saartjie use to describe her. Cold, some might say. Snobby, others whisper. Beautiful, claim some others. Manipulative. Selfish. Irrational...
While some of these claims may be correct the one thing that no one says is broken. The girl that she was in her childhood is gone, replaced by years of training and trauma inflicted upon her by both her family and their society. Her once carefree spirit has been stomped on and ground into dust. She no longer sees the world as being full of opportunity, but instead sees it wrought with pain and corruption. She views everyone she meets with suspicion and has a hard time placing her trust in anyone -- how can she trust anyone when the one man who was suppose to protect her used her as a pawn in his political game?
There was a deep seated anger and vengeance that she held onto like a life raft. It was the only thing that had kept her going through the years of her training and the marriage she was forced into. It had been the only thing that has kept her alive and prevented her from ending her misery herself, but now her anger is spent. Her vengeance is done and there is nothing left but a shell of a broken woman.
History
KOROFI
She grew up as the daughter of the Arbiter, "King" of the country within his country.
As a young girl she was not allowed to run and play, not even with her brother. She began training as a child to become the perfect wife. She was very well educated and had the best tutors her father could find.
Unknown to her father, at night she and Sunjata would sneak away from their home and go to the beach. There they would lay in the sand and listen to the waves, talking about what their life would be like somewhere else, far away from Korofi. It was during these outings that Sunjata learned how to braid hair.
She was only 13 when Sunjata begins his full trial and she is forced to watch by her father as part of her "training" because when she had children of her own she would have to sit and watch their trials.
At 16 years old, Saartjie's lessons and training on how to be the perfect wife too a turn. She was considered of age and was beginning to be taught about what men expected and wanted from a woman in the privacy of their bedroom.
Sunjata leaves to begin searching for the rebellion and Saartjie begins entertaining potential suitors from other noble houses.
She learns of Sunjata joining the rebel cause and shows disgust for the very idea of it when in her father's presence, but secretly she's hoping he and the rebels win. She begins using her feminine wiles to gain information about movement against the rebels from the other noblemen and their sons. She then sends this information to Sunjata.
Witnesses her father murder her mother on life TV in an attempt to get Sunjata give up the location of the rebels.
Learns that Sunjata and Luci have been captured, but only after Luci has already been killed. Sunjata almost dies as a result of his torture and Saartjie is tasked with tending to him while he heals. It is then that they learn of their pending engagements and decide to make a run for it. Unfortunately they get separate and Saartjie is captured and returned home to her father and fiance.
It is believed that Sunjata was attempting to kidnap Saartjie, so no puishment befalls her. She is forced to marry Gaal, the man who was the reason her brother was captured and tortured, though she does not know it at the time.
As is the tradition in Korofi, their marriage ceremony is bound in blood. Saartjie's hand is cut as is Gaal's, and he marks her with his blood, claiming her as his own.
Several months after being married, Saartjie finds out she is pregnant. This disgusts her as she does not want to have Gaal's children -- or any for that matter as long as she is forced to live in Korofi. She finds an herbalist who gives her a medicine to naturally induce a miscarriage.
After miscarrying their child, Gaal has Saartjie marked with a tattoo on her ribcage.
In another act of defiance, Saartjie begins taking birth control to prevent herself from falling pregnant again. After a year of not becoming pregnant Gaal has Saar marked yet again, adding to the tattoo on her ribcage, though this one marks her as infertile and unfit.
Gaal, in a drunken stupor, admits that he was the one that gave up Sunjata's location and, by default, the reason he was tortured and nearly killed. This sparks an argument between the pair and Gaal attempts to make Saar submit to him because he is her husband and she belongs to him because of their blood oath. This ignites a blinding fury in Saartjie and she attacks Gaal. When it is over she is covered in his blood once more and he is laying on the floor of their home, dead. She leaves with nothing and doesn't look back.
