Appearance
There was only a glimmer of innocence left in his pale, bright eyes; childhood had become a distant haze to him that he could scarcely remember. Like a stray cat, he carried an air of haughty pride, skittishness, and precociousness with him -- perhaps shared in their agility too. The boy was lithe, thin and pliable as a sapling swaying in the wind, and when he spoke his boyish, husky voice made every word sound like a carefully kept secret.
Personality
Reserved and prideful, Mordecai doesn't exactly wear his heart on his sleeve and generally treats strangers with a healthy dose of suspicion and distrust. Yet around those he knows well he is much more animated, outgoing and even manages the occasional toothy grin or smile. Mordecai's biggest strengths are his courage and determination without which he wouldn't have survived. At the same time he has a stubborn, proud, and even arrogant streak growing within him that often leads him into impulsive, brash actions that see him land in increasingly sticky situations.
History

On Flowerbirth 310 Mordecai's life was uprooted.

During the Fiat Lux Festival both of his parents were killed in a deadly attack. While the boy escaped with his life, he was left an orphan. Distant, greedy family members he didn't know he had took off with what should have been his inheritance and placed him in the cheapest orphanage they could find while they divided the money among themselves. Since the child was of no use to any of them Mordecai was sent off to the cheapest orphanage where he could perish in silence.

Though oblivious to their crimes, Mordecai was not oblivious to the possibility of a better life. One less filled with hunger, misery and thrashings for so much as breathing the wrong way. By the time he turned eleven, Mordecai gathered his courage and belongings and ran off.

The road to Stormbreak was long and hard, but with ample help from kind strangers and splash of good fortune, the boy eventually made it to the city in one piece. Determined not to ever set foot in another orphanage again, Mordecai lied, thieved, pilfered to keep out of it. But when Deepfrost reared its ugly head, his situation had grown so dire that he was only spared a slow, cold death by one of Mother Molly's girls.

Ruby, he later learned, had not been her real name. She might be Rossane and he Mordecai, but to this day she lovingly calls him Cai and he insists on Ruby.

Mother Molly's working girls nurtured him back to health when no one else would. In return, the boy earned his keep by running odd jobs for the brothel. Messages that needed delivering across town, mistrusted clients that needed to be followed, drunk customers whose pockets could be made to be a little lighter... Mordecai grew to become just as fiercely protective of Mother Molly's ladies as they were of him.

Presently, Mordecai still resides at Mother Molly's and has a tiny room to himself in a dusty nook of the establishment. He typically spends most of his day outdoors, either running errands, loitering about, or making mischief.

Other
Despite his less-than-ideal living conditions, Mordecai is fairly well-kempt, thanks to continuous fretting of the girls at Mother Molly's over him. Perhaps the only real sign of his living rough is that he almost always carries some small cut, bruise or other injury as testimony to his frequent misadventures.
