Appearance
Dark Brown Hair | Hazel/Light Brown Eyes | Lean/Fit | Tattoo located on his spine | Two slightly sharpened horns above his temples, quite short

Devil-may-care turned man, Saint is neither traditionally attractive nor unfortunate. A pity really, given that a genuine smile might make the man quite handsome in some circles. Yet, that’s never been a true concern of his, unless it went toward achieving one goal or another. In which case, it might be best to refrain from ogling his sultry half smiles and recognize them for the bait they are. It can be easy to tell when he’s working based on the slight glint in those brandy-colored eyes. When off-duty, Royal isn’t nearly as charming despite the soft crow’s feet that gather around his eyes when he laughs. Of course, that could just be a theory as well.

While he’s never been a brute per se, Royal tends to keep fit for hunting and various other physical activities. It’s actually a pretty integral facet of his life considering his peculiar nature. Never one to boast, but also borderline vain. Like his father, Saint inherited a dark mess of hair that he likes to keep longer on the top and always in disarray. If he’s not running a hand through it subconsciously, he’s likely about to.

When Saint was younger, around 16 years or so, he met Oleander for the first time. He hadn’t wanted a younger sister, or even a sister for that matter, and vehemently opposed her moving in. However, when his Father, Tobias, showed up with a naive Oli in tow, Royal became a brother and protector all at once. When misfortune struck, his loyalty to her was tested and to commemorate that day, he had the phrase “No Matter Where” tattooed down the middle of his back. In turn, Oli received its pair “No Matter What”.
Personality
Transparent | Decisive | Abrasive | Curious | Carefree | Possessive | Maverick

If you know Royal, there’s a good chance you fall in one of two categories: wary of him or simply repulsed. He’s not a nice guy. Unfortunately, he’s never deigned to sit at anyone’s table or sip at someone else’s wine. Instead, he’s something of a maverick - more content to bite bones than any flesh offered out of pity or piety. You can keep your morals to yourself, because they’ve never suited him and he’s never cared for conformity.

Being free-spirited isn’t how most would describe him, but he’s certainly free of expectations. Days tend to come and go without notice unless he’s actively engaging in his own wants and needs. Of which there are many. Overindulgence is something of a vice for Royal, not that he’d consider himself so flawed, but a vice nonetheless. In many ways he might seem to acknowledge these various depravities, but sometimes the depths of his sheer abrasiveness on the matter can appear… uncaring. He isn’t shy about his affections or lack thereof, honest about his desires when it comes to fighting and fucking, and pretty blatantly open about ALL of his personal preferences. Perhaps the best word to use when describing him is simply transparent.

However, there are some tender parts of St. James that might shock or astonish the masses. When it comes to his younger half-sibling, Oleander, he can be quite protective (or overbearing depending on who you ask). He’s not prone to keeping a close inner-circle, but there are a few staples when it comes to maintaining familial ties with Royal. He’s a “keep your friends close and your enemies closer” kind of man, but once that organ in his chest is pierced, there’s no straying. Whether you want to or not.
History
Royal grew up with his father, mainly because his mother refused to stick around for his rearing. She’d gotten pregnant young and couldn’t handle the pressures of an infant and a drunk partner who simply couldn’t be bothered to cater to a girl nearly ten years his junior. It wasn’t the first time that Tobias St. James had managed to coerce a young woman into his bed, but it was certainly the first time that he’d wound up with a child out of the deal. For a time, the neighbor named Penny would come and check on Royal while he was still young - feed him and care for him for the small bit of cash his father had to offer. In fact, she was likely the only reason he’d somehow survived his formative years. But I guess merely living to survive punched a lot of holes in the growing process, because Royal never truly learned the type of compassion it took to thrive in society. He grew up bitter and resentful of his lot in life and even more hateful of the father who never was.

That was until he found out he wasn’t alone. When Tobias brought home a gangly young girl called Oleander, Royal was instantly off-put by the idea of having to care for something other than himself, because there was no earthly way his father was going to do it. They fought like cats and dogs in the beginning, trading fists and insults like they had them in spades. Somewhere in the mix, and maybe all the time spent alone, they came to depend on one another in their own odd way. They weren’t particularly friendly to one another, but somewhere along the line, they had become civil.

From time to time they would share meals and conversation even if it was often short-lived. In the time that it took them to grow into young adults, they came to unintentionally consider one another family. However, family in the St. James’ family wasn’t one that held much merit and that was evidenced by the thievery and callousness Tobias brought home with his nightly pint of whiskey. For years, his negligence was considered tolerable until Oleander turned eighteen and started to resemble a young woman. It was then that things began to take a nasty turn for the worst.

Tobias held no true land nor titles when it came to the small civilization to whom they had all been subjects. He was no courtier, no public figure, and certainly no Lord with any sway in the land. He was merely a frequent patron of the local pub and connoisseur of ladies of the night. He lost most of his meager earnings in that way, so Royal had been the one to take on odd jobs for local townsfolk to keep the small family with room and board. However, years of drinking and toiling over numerous women had soured the old man’s heart. He had grayed early, lost the battle against his burgeoning gut, and no longer appealed to the young lasses he had once enamored. He was simply a destitute failure. Until an idea came to him.

If Tobias could come up with enough money, he could invest in an upcoming venture that included dozens of keeps being built along the main road to the capital. Their future profit would partly be his and, in his mind, it meant a soft future of finery. All he had to do was find a prime buyer for the beautiful daughter he had inherited at sixteen, as she was ripe to marry now. However, since dowries and arranged bethrotals had been outlawed years and years ago, the only way to go about selling a human being was to list them on the black market trading line.

With no one the wiser, Oleander was listed in short order against a slew of other younger women being auctioned off for their virtue. There were many from around town that hadn’t made it into society based on their family title and still more than had. It was a truly abominable affair. But that’s how horror stories work these days and Oli sold for a hefty 100,000 cranes. Tobias was informed that the buy would be by to collect his prize in a week’s time and their information was exchanged. Funny how little a child’s life can mean.

When the day finally arrived for Oli to be handed over, it was planned that Royal would be anywhere else, entirely oblivious to the plan. The lie was already set in motion when he left that morning to retrieve supplies for the household from a neighboring city. It was during that time that Oleander’s buyer arrived for his intended bride and brought upon her the kind of hell only such a man could possibly bring. She did so fight and wail for Royal, certain she was doomed to whatever nightmare had befallen her...

Until she wasn’t. Until there was blood spilling from open wounds and down into her eyes. Until she was covered in crimson and staring up into the void, a viscous Royal glaring back. She couldn’t cry anymore and she didn’t want to. “I thought you wouldn’t make it,” she stated into the gore-filled silence.

“I’ll always come back for you Oli. No matter what.”
