Heave the silver hollow sliver
He’d left exploring for other monumental efforts, for all the good it’d accomplished. In between the time he’d last dove headlong into curiosity, he’d been caught on fire twice, managed to miraculously not die amidst poisonous fumes and botched missions, and hundreds of other things scattered in between. He kept it all at bay for now, because the tendency to brood was starting to take form over his figure, and he had no inclination to wallow currently. There were many too many missions to accomplish.

For instance: wandering into the Underground at the behest of Rexanna’s letter, stuffed underneath his door that morning. His brow had arched, his inquiries had been rattled and unsettled, and he’d pondered over the length of it since he’d prepared himself for whatever lurked ahead: especially since they’d yet to discuss anything at length in quite a while, and he had scores of questions for her.

What had she been doing amidst the forum, close to the Merciless?

So it was another enigma reeling within his mind as he roamed further and further into the ruins, brushing past the fallen columns and the broken pillars, the morning sun casting the only heat within: the rest of Leafchange’s presence was firmly noted in the chilling breeze – he lifted his head to its glacial expanse and imagined mountains instead of decay and disintegration. The rest of his form moved in further accord, a predacious glare, newly stitched skin and lacerations hinting, begging, pleading, for slower maneuvers and motion. There was a brief hope, because he knew it didn’t do well to merely rest on laurels and pretend that faith would seam it back together, that Rexanna had not fallen back into old habits, that what he’d seen had been naught more than a show, a display, or perhaps a return of the Thief.

So the Reaper lingered near the entrance, lured by the breadth of darkness pulsing, pervading from its threshold – a Stygian canal, exactly what he yearned and craved in those devastating parallels. It’d be so easy to slip back into routines and habits, to conform into the sepulchers and catacombs. He took a step inward, glanced into the void, and waited.

REXANNA
you don't get to die and be reborn the same.
you come back,
Where Deimos has made strides to disappear from the brooding monarch she knew him to be, Rexanna had promised him she wouldn’t fall back into old habits. And for awhile, she thinks it’s true. And she tells herself this every moment she steps out of the house to continue the work she’s been charged with. But when she stands beside the Launceleyn’s and sees those she loves and cares for enter, she cannot escape the eye of the Reaper. And since that moment, the faintest of a quirk her direction, the golden woman realizes she’s perhaps not as good as he has been.

All of this, for Bastien. The only difference is that he rejected the idea rather than encouraged it. Tembovu had been different, encouraging her to leave the comfort of the north for a better life. She wonders if that makes any difference at all. And so she sends the letter to Deimos with a quiet disappearance, waiting until dark before she makes her way there. She’s dressed in finery again, a posture reminiscent of the Thief of the Basin she had been once upon a time. Not as good as the Laurelin, but a thief all the same.

It’s not until she hears the scruff of feet near the entrance that she turns; peering through the dark to see it it’s him or someone else. She catches a glimpse of shadowed dark blue eyes in the darkness, and she opens her palm to create a sparkler to give them some light. Taking a bit of the flame from the firework, she uses it like Peter had to light a forgotten torch on the back wall before her firework had vanished.

Deimos.” She says softly, making her way further into the Underground. “I’m glad you got my letter.” She says for a moment, offering him a gentle smile before she removes the cloak hood from her head, her dark hair another curtain of dark against the shadowed light. “We needed to talk, but I hadn’t had time before the meeting.

Flames sizzled in his view, and Rexanna’s voice lingered in the ether, pushed away from hoods and cloaks, and he was reminded of daggers and claws, the way they’d all drifted between lies and duplicity, armistices and allies, comrades and adversaries, tripping over wires and delicately balancing their strife, munitions, and aspirations. We needed to talk was always a dreadful omen, a harsh beginning, and he wasn’t sure how to begin with her, how to form his stance: as the Reaper King, surrounded by avarice and meticulous, scrupulous efforts, the beast, the monster, the depraved, calculating in cold blood, ensuring enemies were devastated, ruined, and mauled? As he was now, more understanding, somehow accepted, tolerated, loved by those around him?

He settled for somewhere in between, moving within the shadows and light, not reeling from the fire as he ought to; childhood instilled with his father’s embers somehow managing to conquer his recent involvement, charred, and scorched skin. His eyes were the same piercing, penetrating force of old, incapable of erasing those intense, fierce edges; especially when dread, when apprehension, when a singular nuance and sensation of something foreboding coiled its way through his chest. Why would they need to be hidden and tucked away to discuss matters? Unless it was something grave, or foolish…and she’d promised him, in some fashion, that she wasn’t going to repeat the same mistakes.

What have you done? he questioned into the silence, in the scale of his weighted stare, in the arch of the underground pathways.

“What did you want to discuss?” His voice glided out into the hollowed grounds, deep and rumbling, like the intonation of a warning. Deimos truly didn’t know what she’d gotten involved in since the last time they talked – it’d been ages – perhaps not since their curiosity led them from shrines to the Loreseekers’ Guild, and a world of things had revolved and altered since then. Was it concerning the recent meeting amidst the Merciless? Was it Kiada (had she discovered he encouraged a discussion amidst mother and daughter, and now he was the one in hot water?)? Or was there another thing brooding within, a nuance, a notion, he’d yet to discover?

He’s that pillar that she remembers, the dark obsidian stone that watches over the north, the way his icy eyes linger on her. Sharp and uncertain, and she inhaled deeply to look away as he asks what she wants to discuss. For a moment she wants to say everything, but she doesn’t. So much has happened, and she scours her mind for a place to start. When was the last time she’d even seen him? When he was at the bakery with Amalia and Kiada as she knows now. A low pang of guilt sits in her gut at the remembrance. But that was before Fiat Lux, before the fall of the Spire, before she had been bitten by Lucas and passed out beneath the shadow of the structure.

But perhaps the most important part is when he locked eyes with her briefly at the meeting, the stance she had with the Launceleyn’s versus the rest of those in attendance. “I work for her now.” She says quietly, arms folding behind her back as her gaze drifts away from the Reaper to the walls of the underground. “I offered my services to keep those I care for protected.” She begins, not mentioning Bastien’s name but making it cover everyone. Him, Bastien, Kiada even. “That includes you. And…. And Kiada too.” She pauses, eyes flickering to him to see his response.

His features locked back into stone and rock, rubble and ruin, mountain and beast – reticent, jaw clenched, as she revealed the first chord of their impending discourse. Another deal with the devil – Thief skills woven back into place, maneuvering and motioning her hands into devilish deals and ruses. A frustrated growl threatened to loosen itself through his chest, a deepening rumble, a force to be reckoned with, but nowhere for it to go except out into the hollowed void. His eyes narrowed instead, pinpointed on her – a sigh managing to flicker its way through his nostrils instead of the vexation, careful, cool, and composed. How? he wanted to ask – how could she possibly want to work for that woman? Why didn’t she want to resist? Why was everything a dally with the court, with diplomacies, with tremulous lines? Why couldn’t she ask them for help? Why did she place herself deliberately into the warren, into the catacombs? He swallowed down the bile, the rage suddenly cloaking over his veins, pulsing between muscle and sinew, flesh and bone, speaking for all of them (the arrogance was back and churning, burning, along his insides; but he couldn’t imagine Kiada yearning for this situation either, no matter how she felt about her mother). “We do not want you to risk yourself for us.” He stood tall and firm, an unyielding, unattainable presence again, as if they were back along the summits, the peaks, the valleys, the ice vivid in his eyes, in his guard, in the way that he didn’t want to break apart again. Couldn’t she see the pattern? Couldn’t she see the lines drawn? “Especially at her hands.” They had no idea what the Merciless was capable of – but she’d already sizzled and barbed against the seditious, the irreverent, the irked and exasperated. “What is she having you do?”

you don't get to die and be reborn the same.
you come back,
She hears Deimos’ silence as she explains, and a part of her gut churns with the reaction she gets. Though she can’t deny she expects anything less. She offers him a quiet, sad smile, as he stands tall and firm and replies to her. She doesn’t see how it could’ve been any other way; the only way in her mind is through this. And likely due to the magic that Zariah had embued in her, she had little choice in the matter like she thinks she does. Her shoulders rise and fall in a small shrug, eyeing Deimos briefly before she looks to the flames dancing on the wall. “She’s having me be her voice, to try and get you all to cooperate.” She says, avoiding the main problem at hand.

Magic binds her to Zariah, there isn’t a way for her to get out of it, at least not without some kind of intervention. She’s talked with Bastien, she’s seen the excitement in his eyes and his voice at the possibility of Ascending her. And she realizes that if it comes down to it, she might head toward the New Goddess in an attempt to become less useful to Zariah and to remove the bind. She huffs quietly, looking down to her hands before she raises one and plays with a flame on the wall.

I didn’t want to do it this way, but she made me. I need you and Kiada to keep your heads down, I’ve already vouched for Bastien.” She pauses, eyes dancing over to him. “I might have used up my goodwill for the week.” She adds with a small half smile, shit attempt at a joke.

It was her hapless shrug that made him want to growl or roll his eyes. Neither were committed though, controlled and composed in that same stoic entity, mind already striving, machinating, through the arena of possibilities that might’ve been overlooked. It was another strike against the Merciless, to now be manipulating and using a friend for her own means. He jaw clenched and he thought about looking away, about distorting and destroying something nearby, about undoing carefully orchestrated walls and letting chaos, bedlam, and menace reign along his predilections: his stare went to the flames as he schemed. “Good luck,” he said dryly, because she must’ve known, must’ve realized, what a task it would be to keep them in line, after that disaster of an open forum, after the condescending overtures, after the forced enlistment, after the world had been taken when they’d all been content in their realms. He’d been amidst those sovereigns before: refugees along the Steppe, conspiring and seething, sieging and imploring, until time managed to proffer them something in return. Her following statement only made him narrow his eyes, turning the affronted, irritated stare right back to her. “You expect us to keep our heads down after that?” He snorted, indifferent towards a monarch’s greed and ambitions, a tyrannical edge, a blistering foe creeping along the horizon, striving to get all her positions in place. His features rendered back to something reticent and isolated, a series of detachments pieced together from primordial days, when he had nothing and no one but himself, even if that wasn’t the case in these hours. “There must be an alternative.” Because there was always another way – a method, a means, to outfox and outwit a bloodthirsty martinet.

He responds to her dryly, and she continues to let her sapphire gaze linger on him. She rolls her shoulders in a slight shrug before sighing. “I didn’t have a choice, Deimos.” She answers, growing increasingly frustrated, because she can’t tell him the specifics of her interactions with the queen. But she can tell him that it may or may not have been influenced. “There is no alternative.” She replies, a bit fiery, stepping closer toward the Reaper – the Siren looking up to him in his icy gaze. “It is only this.” She says, gesturing to the rest of the ruins around her.

There were other ways, but how many times had it lead Deimos and others close to death and destruction? “I went to negotiate, but she is powerful Deimos, and I think everyone is underestimating it.” She snaps lightly, arms folding across her chest. “I hadn’t intended on working for her when I arrived, but there was something about being there that I just… Agreed, I had little choice to say no.” She replies honestly, sighing and pressing a hand to her forehead as she looks down.

I will do all that I can, but, do not be alone with her.” She warns, sapphire gaze growing hard and sharp as she looks up to his icy gaze. Disapprove of it all he likes, but she’s being honest. The dread in her stomach replaced with anger and frustration.

DEIMOS
Heave the silver hollow sliver
Damned and consigned to an eternal oblivion: he was going to start losing them all again – he could feel it – one by one, starting with Rexanna, repeating those cruel cycles because he couldn’t do anything. I didn’t have a choice when there was always a choice, always an option, always a solution – why not violence, why not a riot, why not a coup, why not something other than agreement? Was that how this world was going to work too – where everyone bowed their heads and submitted, resigned to their fates, ready for gloom and disaster to pluck them until they disintegrated?

What a life to lead once more: to have things and watch them slide out of his grasp, loss and loss and loss.

You cannot have them he yearned to roar into the columns.

Wasn’t it time for him to do something other than wallow and linger in the shadows? To brood and crave and yearn for a time before the chaos and destruction? Wasn’t it time to break the rotation? But what? his skull ached with the darkness of the strife, with the noose tethering them all together, binding their frayed strands, their endless entropies and enmities, the smothering, choking drawstrings catching over his throat.

He gnashed his teeth together, jaw clenched again, arms folded against his chest, listening, listening, listening, but not wanting to – defiance and sedition cultivating its roots in his soul until he was vibrant and vehement with the claws and daggers, with the cloaks and hostilities, pondering when he could break everything apart, and if he could ever put it back together. If this was the start of the end, and he’d seen it before, the little hands rotating, the fervency shrieking its tell-tale heart chords at him, and he still couldn’t find a niche to land his knife in, to stab its chambers, to decimate, obliterate, the adversaries who threatened what he considered his own. “What do you mean – little choice to say no?” Was there something more? Why would someone like Rexanna succumb so easily: when he’d known what she was, when he’d understood and comprehended her snares, her traps, her ways to flicker around, to blend into crowds.

He almost didn’t tell her he’d already been alone with Zariah, there on the oasis banks, with his calculated airs and his machinated schemes and his belligerent, reticent folds: features blank and unforgiving, granting her meager morsels and scraps, because she hadn’t taken anything of his, not then, because he’d learned to play a game too. “I already have been.” His eyes glanced back over to Rexanna’s fiery abyss, wondered if she’d attempted to use it in the furtive corridors with the Queen, and if it had mattered after everything else. “I proposed the open forum.” He inclined his head, a slight tilt, as if to say and you saw how that went.

you don't get to die and be reborn the same.
you come back,
There’s a fury and flame within her, and she knows it’s not just her magic. She wants to tell him, she wants to tell someone, but she can’t find the words. She doesn’t know how to explain how Zariah made her do it – she recalls the steps, slowly in her mind, as Deimos simmers beside her. Both like flame under a pot of water, slowly reaching that boiling point and not quite spilling over yet. “She made me say yes.” She says quietly, eyes drifting from the man beside her toward the stone floor, walls, anywhere but him. “She approached me, lifted my head to look up at her and inspect me, and I just… Agreed, I couldn’t stop myself from it.” She says, chewing on her lip slightly before she sighs.

There is more, but I cannot say.” She tells him, brows furrowing together. “I want to, but the minute I try it feels so wrong, I can’t… I can’t say it.” She stumbles, telling Deimos of the things she couldn’t tell Bastien or anyone else. The pit of her stomach continues to drop as she thinks on it, having originally believed working for Zariah would be safety and comfort, but now – now without so much of Zariah’s influence, the mind that was once changed at the Queen’s hands, begins to change again ever so slightly.

And she remembers the magical binding, afraid of what might happen should she break her oath. Would she be harmed? Maimed? Dead? But when he tells her that he’s been alone with her, her eyes drift to him. “Don’t let it happen again.” She grits out.

Heave the silver hollow sliver
Made you?” His eyes narrowed: membrane speculating, all those years of plotting along the throne, intertwining diplomacies and politics (a matter of absolute contempt and abhorrence), knowing and understanding the lengths in which Rexanna resided. She was not a pushover. She always found a way to achieve her means. She used kindness and beneficence. She embodied trickery and snares, deceit and lies, cloak and daggers beneath the wiles and smiles. Perhaps this just meant the Merciless had her number, orchestrated means, measures, and methods to unravel the shift of Rexanna’s course and decisions – and it chiseled deep down into his chest, where the growls rumbled, where the tempest brewed. “Are you implying she is manipulating you? Controlling you?” Would she even be able to say? Was this some sort of invocation or enchantment – a touch upon the chin – that led her down this ridiculous path? The amount of seething hatred boiling in his blood was overwhelming and enormous – and he wasn’t sure how much longer he could control, compose, the nuances. It wasn’t right. It wasn’t fair – nothing in life was. It was just one more obstacle, one more reason, one more strike against the Merciless, one more reason to evict, condemn, or rise against the storm: seditious and brazen, audacious and immoral, rebellion on the tip of his tongue.

More – but she couldn’t say. Wanting to – but incapable. “Can it be broken?” The machinations in his core burned, simmered, coiled back over themselves again and again, stretching out into the abyss, into the void, and wondering why these earths, these worlds, always seemed to share their miseries, their woes, their anguish. She didn’t deserve this. All for the sake of someone, something – protecting; what he should’ve been doing all along. Maybe, just maybe, at the very sanction of him, deep in the bellows of his nefarious heart, part of the anger, the raw, choking heart, was because he didn’t do anything. Because he was too late. Because he should’ve been more than a shadow in the darkness, deciphering implicit, unsaid discourse. “Perhaps we could make something,” he mumbled under his breath, beneath the roughened timbre and the diminishing hope. Deimos had his crafting, but only so far: the alchemist might have had a better notion, given his advancements in techniques and invocations.

Don’t let it happen again echoed into his soul, stuck there like a thorn, like a nettle.

For there were many things he wouldn’t allow to occur any longer.

REXANNA
you don't get to die and be reborn the same.
you come back,
His eyes narrow as he questions her, and her head dips in a nod. Yes, she was made to, without any forcing ability aside from her thoughts shifting. But much like her thoughts, they could be influenced. And Rexanna has always been a prime example of learning and living by one thing only to have it proven wrong – and ever since then she hasn’t put much stock into all of her thoughts. She remains simply looking at all sides of the coin, adjusting and changing her mind constantly. If it made her inconsistent, she didn’t care, because it did make her feel better about knowing all the outcomes.

When he speaks of whether Zariah’s controlling her, she shakes her head uncertainly. “I don’t know, Deimos.” She replies, a frown finding her face. “My thoughts are my own, but I’m uncertain of where they lie now.” She adds, a bit quickly, head turning back toward him to look upon him. She had been against Zariah from the beginning, but after meeting her she had related to the woman, wanted to work with her, and now weeks after having it happen, she’s beginning to distrust her own mind again.

I do not know what will happen.” She says a bit sadly, she doesn’t know if breaking the oath will kill her or harm her, maim her and destroy her. She doesn’t want to find out. Her eyes drift from him back toward the walls with a sad gleam in her eyes. But when he mentions that they could possibly make something, Rexanna finds her shoulders rolling in a small shrug. “The only way to know would be to try and make something that blocks magic in a certain radius, and see if it makes a difference.” She contemplates, deciding that if Zariah had been using magic, the only way to know would be to stop the magic from working in her presence.

I don’t know, I don’t know; a broken record that embodied where a multitude of them stood now. They didn’t know how to combat Zariah’s forces. They didn’t know how to make the world any better, as they were all slowly, painfully, strangled by her noose. They didn’t know what the future held, when they were all knotted, gnarled, and frayed. Perhaps her admission was enough now though - uncertain of where they lie now a warning, an omen, and he quickly clenched his jaw tight again, afraid to give anything else away. How potent were these spells, these invocations, if that was what truly had her bound? Or was there something deeper, something more sinister, traversing, laying the groundwork for more intervals, for more information, for some embodiment of codes and listening? It was a paranoid strand, but something he’d have to consider: which was sad, which was disappointing, when the notion sizzled and sparked: that he might not be able to trust her. His eyes, relentless and derisive, softened only a bit when glancing back upon her, one of his oldest friends, trapped and ensnared, ensconced and held by the bitter, rancorous unknown, and he didn’t know what to do. This wasn’t like Helovia, where he could have sunk his sword into a adversary’s chest and been done with the whole affair: there were more strings attached, more filaments, more unforeseen circumstances and conclusions. He so wished he could’ve waged war with knives and cutlasses, with rapiers and sedition, the sizzling of insurrection brewing in his veins. “If you are working for her, are you required to report everything you see and learn?” The inquiry held there, in the shadows, in the darkness, brooding as an agonizing figure, needing to understand if there was a traitor’s gallows slinking and serpentining around now too – and if these mistakes had simply increased twofold.

It was all shrugs and defeat (something that made his hands ball into fists, still stretched across his chest, folded over so she couldn’t see the frustrations ebbing and flowing), a miniscule voice and contemplation, a blocking of magic. “I can create things, but not to that extent.” He hadn’t grown in that capacity yet, hadn’t wielded more than simpler objects, sometimes bigger, sometimes grander, but naught enhanced and pervaded with their own touch of enchantments. “Remi can,” he added – but that would be one more thing on the alchemist’s lengthy list. Perhaps it was too late anyway, and they were merely grasping at straws, incapable of holding on to any.

REXANNA
you don't get to die and be reborn the same.
you come back,
It is a broken record, one that stutters and shakes as it tries to continue, but only comes back to the same thing. I don’t know. And she hates the idea of not knowing, of not being able to change anything or being better equipped or prepared. She inhales sharply, cursing herself internally for being so naïve and so stupid, but her eyes drift back to one of her oldest friends, one that she cares for so much and it pains her to see the questions brimming in his glass hued gaze, and she shrivels internally when he asks her if she has to report.

I haven’t reported yet, but I’m sure it’s part of the job duties.” She responds, softly, her gaze drifting from him as she glances back toward the stones on the walls. “I’m to recruit, to make the transition easier.” She reiterates, hoping that it might answer the question inadvertently that he’s looking to ask. She doesn’t know what he knows, but she’s certain there’s secrets that he likely doesn’t want the Crown to find out about – she too as those secrets, like her rendezvous within the Greatwood, her attempt to recruit her own separate version’s daughter, only to have it backfire.

She wants to be successful if for nothing else but to keep Zariah from looking too long in her direction.

But when Deimos mentions he can create, she tilts her head and her gaze snaps back to him with interest. “Perhaps I shall seek him out.” She responds, finding it pretty terrible to not have spoken with Remi for the longest time only to approach and beg him to make more things. She didn’t know where he stood with Zariah, either, and so she remained quiet and contemplative. “He’s been a busy man.” She responds, recalling the attempts she’s tried to make to see him, only having saw him briefly at the Meeting with the Queen. But a thought occurs to her, and she looks back to Deimos intrigued. “Can you show me how to make something? I don't know if I can, but I want to at least try.
but you come back wrong
this is the price
you pay for
resurrection
