Arcane Academy
The first training was always the most interesting. But of course, she couldn't have everyone who had joined the Academy in this first lesson. How would she be able to assess their form and abilities in such a large group? Not well, that was for certain. So this class had been greatly limited. The Grand Sorceress awaited the first group atop the tower of the Academy, standing at a practiced at-ease position. The wind tousled her wild curls, doll-like hazel gaze focused straight ahead. The group that had signed up for this first lesson had been an interesting mix.

Time to test their mettle.

Well, Loren obviously wouldn’t want to miss the first ever Magical Training training thread by the Arcane Academy. Although he was pretty certain he’d knew what to expect, maybe Zariah would surprise him. Knowing she’d make an example of him if he brought a flask, he’d done his drinking in advance, knocking back most of a bottle.

Then he’d sauntered over to the school. Slipping in with a bit of a swagger, wearing all black clothes he could move easily in, he let his eyes trail over the Archmage. Smirking, he gave her an approving and slightly ironic nod, clasping his hands behind his back in imitation of her posture. However, there was something insolent about the movement, and his own stance and expression.

MAEA
Maea had come to this school to learn, train and grow as a mage. Those were lead words that saw her through the days, and she allowed few distractions to take her attention off the goals. already she had sacrificed things to be in Halo, and she would not pass up any chance to make the months she would spend here count.

She arrived on the rooftop dressed for training, in simple, loosefitting clothes that allowed easy movement. No shawl darkened her shoulders this time. It was far too precious to expose to the potential damage this training might bring on, and lately Maea had found less need for it. The lesson learned during Initiation had taken root in her, and she stood in the cold wind with no signs of distress, despite the low temperatures. With hair tied back in a simple braid, she went up to stand next to Loren; but she paid him little to no heed, only sparing him a passing glance and nod. As if they hardly knew each other at all.

The greeting she extended to Zariah was far deeper, a proper show of respect. Just to be on the safe side.

She’d been waiting for class. Excited for class. What a strange thought, that she would go to school and actually be looking forward to it. Enjoy it? Probably not. She knew some of the other students would be able to kick her ass, not that it mattered. Weaver was sort of used to getting her ass kicked, though she was also sort of tired of it. That was the point of coming here in the first place, in enrolling. So someone could teach her to stop getting her ass handed to her on a silver platter.

Not that she couldn’t fight. She could use the scythe that was almost always strapped across her back. She could use the knives that were always around her waist, tucked into boots, or wherever else she decided to hide them. Yet she can’t help but recall her spar with Saiden and how easily the water he had thrown at her had overcome her. Imagine if she could burn it away.

So Weaver makes her way to the top of the tower were Zariah waits. As usual, she wears her scythe and her usual training gear; easy to move in, not too tight, not too loose. Loren and Maea are already there, and she gives them a friendly smile, before  turning her attention to Zariah and nods in greeting, waiting for instruction.

How very prompt. They must be eager students. But perhaps they would be far less eager by the end of the day.

"It is well known and accepted battle knowledge that any battalion is only as strong as their weakest link. Same is true for a singular mage." she said, diving in. Her eyes scanned the group, wondering if they were clever enough to catch on. "Each of you is only as powerful as your weakest magic. All too often we rely solely on that which we have mastered. It makes us predictable. It makes us inflexible. It makes us easier to kill." she explained. "So today, the only magic you will be allowed to use is your weakest form."

Oh, you thought the omnipresent narrator had pestered you with those questions for artistic flair? Reconsider, friends.

"If you use any magic other than your registered weakest magic, you will be dismissed from this class and not be eligible for credit. If you use any non-magic combat, you will be dismissed an ineligible for credit. If you ask one of your classmates for help, or aid one of your fellows, you will be dismissed and ineligible for credit." she said, tone clipped, looking at them all with a hardened gaze. "This lesson is not about teamwork. It is about growing stronger individually, lest you become the weak link of the future battalion. Now, let us begin."

Zariah snapped her fingers and began walking up a narrow staircase to a view platform. A helper from the palace pulled a tarp off of...a cage apparently. With a large, very angry Ursur in it. "Around the Ursur's neck are three bells. Your task is to retrieve one, and only one." she said, stopping atop the platform in an at ease stance.

"Begin."

On her command, the helper opened the gate, and out came charging the jingaling-ing Ursur.

Task
Get one bell from around the Ursur's neck.

Rules
  • You may not assist your fellow classmates (which, hint: means you probably shouldn't kill the bear since that would help them)
  • You may not ask your fellow classmates for help
  • You must use ONLY magic, and ONLY your weakest magic to complete the task
  • Success of any attempts made towards completing the task will be rolled for
Magic Available
  • Loren - Creation
  • Maea - Telekinesis
  • Weaver - Fire Manipulation
NOTE: Due to the nature of Creation Magic, Loren may use summoning magic, but ONLY for creation purposes.

There is no post order. You must respond within 48 hours, or you will be disqualified from the thread.

MAEA
Maea blanched as she saw the Ursur and was told she could only use telekinesis to get the bell from around its neck. That was... an insanely difficult task, considering that her best reach with the magic was only about five feet.

Perhaps it was a good thing that Zariah offered them no time to think about how insane this was, or to actually consider if there was a good way to accomplish the task. They were forced right into the thick of it, and Maea quickly moved aside from the others to get some room to maneuver. While they were not allowed other tools or weapons than magic, she thought that perhaps this would not include physical capabilities like dodging, and that was something she had practiced hard as of late.

Focusing her attention on the Ursur and one of the bells attached to its neck, she moved quite deliberately into the path of the tusked bear and bit down on the fear that made her knees tremble. The ground shook as it barreled towards her, and she tried to be very quick and very precise as she reached out for the bell, attempting to untangle it from the fastenings. Severing the whole thing would have been easier, but would also help the others... so this would just have to do.

Then, when she thought she had the bell and the Ursur was almost on top of her, the girl tried to dodge away, leaping aside in a diving roll that hopefully brought her out of the way from both tusks, claws and the sheer bulk of the beast.

--------

Maea places herself in the path of the Ursur to get close enough for her Telekinesis. She tried to untie one bell from it, then dives out of the way, hoping to not get run over.

As Zariah spoke, Loren listened impassively. He didn’t react much as she ordered them to use their weakest magic only, simply nodded. Following her up to the platform, his eyes narrowed as the Ursur was revealed.

Holding out a hand, his brow furrowed in concentration as he tried to conjure a knife. And...nothing happened. Glancing at his hand, his eyes widened in surprise. Trying again, he failed once more. Now cursing softly, he cycled through other objects: juggling ball, club, crystal, any of the many objects he'd created in his life.

None of them materialized. So he cast a wider net, trying anything and everything he could to create something. Rocks, flowers, a basket, blanket, bread, cheese, meat—

That last one worked. A hunk of bloody meat, no bigger than his fist, appeared in his hand. Blinking in surprise, he quickly focused on the Ursur, deciding to make the most of a bad situation. "Hey there. I've got some meat for you. Just, stay calm." Keeping his voice soothing, he approached the bear as unthreateningly as he could, then tossed his hunk to the opposite side of it from his approach. He was hoping to try and distract it so he could grab a bell, but whether or not the distraction worked he'd probably just try to snatch a bell.

Loren creates a hunk of meat using his magic, and uses it to try and distract the Ursur by tossing it while he grabs a bell.

No. No no no. This can’t be happening. That can’t be an ursur being let loose. What fool would bring that into the citadel and let it loose, let alone ask them to fight it with next to nothing? She doesn’t know what magic the others have to use, she only knows she has a useless weapon at her disposal. Tiny bits of flame that she can’t move. On instinct her hand reaches for the scythe at her back, and she catches herself at the last minute. No weapons. No useful magic.

The other two move before she does. Some part of her is tempted to run the fuck right out of there, magic training be damned. But this is the point, to learn her magic, so the next time she finds one in the wild she can burn the sucker to death before it ever gets close to her. The wound on her chest throbs with some phantom pain though, and she wills herself to ignore it, to fight.

Her eyes dart around for a source of fire, finding a nearby lantern that is, thankfully, moveable. She could take the time to find something else to light, but she suspects she’s close to breaking the rules as it is (though she has no other option, given that she can’t move the fire by magical means yet). Making sure the others are not in the way, Weaver darts in front of the ursur and drops the lantern, trying not to break it though who knows, and darts a few feet away and out of its direct line of sight.

She uses her magic to keep the flames alive, sending them flickering and dancing, hoping it will be enough to worry the ursur or hell, mesmerize it if it happens to like shiny things. It doesn’t really matter which.

Though she stays close to the ursur, given her need to be within a few feet of the flames, she keeps herself positioned out of it’s sight if she can, attempting to come at it from a slight angle. It may not work, depending on the positioning of the ursur and the flames, but she tries, hoping to stay unnoticed as she reaches out, trying to snag the bell from the ursurs neck. Once she thinks she’s got it, Weaver darts away, preferring to live than remember what it feels like to have a tusk stabbed through her chest.

Arcane Academy
There was no time to think, the giant tusked bear charging out at the unlucky students, its roar echoing on the wind and snow.

Maea was its first target, being closest to the cage. The pale young woman was as dextrous with her weak telekinesis under extreme pressure as she was was with her own fingers fully relaxed and at east. The strings holding the bell to the chainlink collar come loose, but any attempt to grab the bell which there wasn't any are thwarted. She had to be far too close to the beast to complete the task. And so as she attempted to dodge, a long tusk sideswiped her, throwing her towards the edge of the rooftop ring, the bell she had untied jingling as it hit the frozen ground and rolled...somewhere.

The only reason the Ursu did not continue to charge her was the sudden smell of oh so yummy blood in the air. With a snarl, the bear whipped its head around, beady black eyes locking onto the chunk of meat that appeared in Loren's hand. Meager portion as it was, it was fresh and plump and right there. As Loren tossed it in the air, the starving creature snapped at it, munching happily well away from the summoner. This gave the Launceleyn the opening he needed to reach into the Ursur's thick fur, successfully grabbing and ripping it off the collar of the beast. Seems that Launceleyn training did him well.

"Loren. Hinder your classmates." Zariah called, seeing as he had already gotten his bell. He always had to mess up her plans, didn't he?

Weaver was almost as lucky, no surprise given her experience as a Halo native. The lantern finds itself placed just in front of the beast, still licking its chops from the little meaty morsel it had gotten. The glow, ebbing and waning under Weaver's control caught it's attention, and it leaned forward to sniff at it, momentarily appeased by the snack. And the woman reached for the bell, so close, so close in fact her fingers brush against it, causing it to jingle ever so slightly...which broke the trance of the Ursur. It roared, and surely her Halo born instinct alone was what sent her dodging safely to the side as it snapped at where she had been.

Loren is now an additional nuisance as he tries to make Maea and Weaver's lives extra difficult! One bell is still attached to the Ursur, one is buried in the snow somewhere.

Loren blinked, surprised when his crazy plan actually worked. However, he swiftly retreated from the Ursur. The only sign that he’d even heard Zariah is that he nodded firmly.

Taking a moment to scan their surroundings, he took in the other two’s attempts in a glance. Although the Archmage hadn’t been explicit he figured he was still operating under the same restrictions as before.

So, clutching his bell tightly in his left hand, he created another chunk of meat in his right. Then he lobbed it at Maea, not wanting to give her the opportunity to search for her bell without interference. As he did, he mouthed an apology at her.

Loren retreats from the Ursur and creates a chunk of raw meat that he throws at Maea.

Fuck. She’d almost had it. Had jingled the damn thing between her fingers and screwed her chance at grabbing it. And no, the bell wasn’t worth getting impaled for, and she’s thankful she was fast enough to get out of it’s way. Zariah barks an order to Loren, and Weaver notices how he choses Maea and not her to interfere with. She wonders for a split second if she ought to be flattered or concerned. Maybe he was coming up with a better plan for how to ruin her chances.

She does not dwell on it, already trying to come up with a plan B when she’d barely had a plan A. She grabs the lantern again and fishes some tinder out of her pocket (because any good Halovian carries tinder like a modern girl carries tampons - everywhere). She lights the pieces of tinder with the lantern, a process made quick and easy through the use of her magic, as she works her way toward Maea and the piece of meat. Sorry Maea, she thinks, as she throws the fire toward the meat, aiming to get the bits of fire in something vaguely like a circle around the meat.

Like before, she’s hoping to distract the ursur, hoping to confuse it as it tries to get at its snack. She keeps the flames alive with magic, letting them flicker and dance, trying to make them look bigger by trickery even if she can’t actually grow the flames.

When the ursur gets close enough (since Weaver can’t stray too far from the fire) she moves toward it again, trying to stay out of its line of sight. Her plan is the same as before - sneak in, snag the bell, get out. She reaches out again, daring to get slightly closer this time. The possibility of just jumping on its back does cross her mind. Tusks couldn’t get her there, but she’s less sure how to get away in that case so she decides not to be a complete idiot.

As soon as she thinks she may have the bell, she darts away again.

---

Weaver lights some tinder with the lantern/some magical aid and throws the fire pieces toward the meat, hoping to encircle it and make the ursur work for its snack. She continues to use her magic to keep the fire going and dancing. While it’s hopefully distracted, she sneaks in to try and snag the bell again before darting away.

MAEA
The tusk slammed into her ribs and Maea was thrown aside like a ragdoll. The air was knocked out of her both by the impact and the fall, and for a moment she could only lie there, gasping for air while the world spun around her. By the time her vision cleared, it was only to see a chunk of meat being tossed in her direction (fucking thank you, Loren), and then Weaver came running towards her, and a circle of flame seemed to spring up around it.

Cursing, Maea rolled up to her feet and scrabbled away, dreading the approach of the Ursur towards the morsel of food. Instead she moved off in the direction she thought she'd heard the bell ring last time, and used her telekinesis like a hand to sift through the snow, hoping to find the bell and grab it, then bring it to her hand with her magical gift, so that she could finish her task.

It wasn't a very graceful display, but... hey. She wasn't supposed to stand out very much, was she? Fumbling around was a good way to keep under the radar.

------

Maea tried to get out of the way of the Ursur, should it come for the meat Loren tossed in her direction, and begins to search the ground - where she last heard the jingle of the bell - with her telekinesis. If she finds it, she will grab the bell and bring it to her hand, and hopefully not fumble again.

Luck has a fickle way about it, blessing some then flitting away. Like most things in his very unfortunate existence, Loren's luck had decided to run out. He was successful in summoning another piece of meat, and tossing it at poor Maea - which, really was the big shocker since his father definitely never played catch with him as a kid - but he miscalculated something. In the midst of summoning meaty morsels, his hands had gotten covered in blood, and he was standing up wind. Rookie tactical error really. The Ursur turned towards Loren instead, eyeing him up. Scrawny, but certainly bigger than the little scrap he had thrown. The tusked bear roar and charged, catching the loose fabric of the summoner's shirt on a tusk, resulting in a bit of a carrot on a stick issue for the beast.

This of course meant that Maea had no problem evading the Ursur. Moreover, the bear moved far enough away that she was able to safely get within range of her lost bell and fetch it with her telekinesis, tinkling lightly as it glided to her hand. That made two successful students.

And it left Weaver, who, while successful in building her little kindling patch and prooving what a good little boyscout she was, and having no issue avoiding being attacked given its preoccupation with Loren, would find getting to the bell still around the Ursur's neck impossible to get to. The bear was desperately trying to bite a chunk out of the summoner swinging wildly from its tusk.

But since two of the three had gotten their bells, it was time to change things up again. "Maea, Loren, kill the Ursur. Weaver, if they kill it before you get your bell, you fail the class." Zariah called down.

Maea and Loren are now tasked with killing the Ursur! If Weaver cannot get the one bell around its neck before they kill it, she will fail the class.

She really doesn’t care about failing. This was such utter bullshit that she considers, again, just up and leaving. This wasn’t training. This was a damn spectator sport for Zariah and nothing more. It’s a shame her desire to stronger magic outweighs her current level of anger, because she doesn’t leave.

Seething, Weaver does what she usually does when she’s pissed, which is to say, she does something stupid.

Grabbing more tinder and lighting it, lantern still in one hand, Weaver moves toward the side of the ursur, chucking the pieces of tinder at it’s fur. She uses her magic to coax any flames that hit the ursur’s side to catch. Why? So it would look to one side and be concerned with the flames in it’s fur and not the girl sneaking up on it’s other side. Yes, she is purposefully pissing off an ursur now but there are two other people tasked with killing it. It has bigger fish to fry than her.

Honestly she probably doesn’t need fire at all at this point, given that the thing is trying to eat Loren, but she assumes Zariah will disqualify her for not trying. Also ridiculous. Everything was a weapon and you didn’t always need magic. She just needed someone to teach her how to use magic; not how to play chicken with a monster. Also ridiculous that she can’t help Loren, and honestly if Loren looks like he’s about to die she might disqualify herself and help away.

She doesn’t spend long trying to light the creature on fire, but what she thinks will be just long enough to accomplish her task. Then she darts around to the other side, keeping close to the ursur, hoping it’s busy, and moves in closer than she has before. Close enough she actually could jump on its back (a current possible escape route from its tusks, to be honest), fingers digging into the fur at its neck and grabbing for the bell again. She stays longer than before, only darting away if absolutely necessary. Maybe someone would kill it the second after she got her bell. That’d be fine.

***
Weaver tries to light little fires on one side of the ursur and then darts around to the other side, moving in super close to the ursur and trying to grab the bell. She only darts away if necessary and considers jumping on its back if she really has to to get out of the way of a tusk.
