A luxere with red glowing antlers? That was sure to draw a crowd.

Indeed the first individually to see it ran back towards the settlement and domiciles, yelling for all he was worth of what he saw. "RED—" (gasp, pant)"—LUXERE. GLOWING. RED—" (cough, splutter), and so on, and so forth.

For its part, the luxere thought of only one thing.

Shedding.

It knew something was wrong. Instinctively it knew, as soon as its antlers had grown in that season. It was far too early for it to even consider shedding, but no longer could it stand the harrowing red glow that followed it around. Indeed, none of its kin would come near the poor thing and so it had spent the months alone.

Weak and finally at its tipping point, the creature wandered into the fields away from its kind and towards the apple trees that grew there. Bowing its head, it began to carve and rake its antlers against the tree, tying to dislodge the beam from the pendacle in anyway that it could.

This is a RARE ANIMAL SIGHTING which counts for higher levelling requirements! Because this deer won't be here for long, this thread will be open for only 24 hours. Feel free to have your character see this luxere or hear the news of it and come to check it out themselves! This does not count as a seasonal luxere requirement thread though.

What will you do?

Ronin stood, torn in the snowy fields, his hands buried in his pockets and the collar of his coat turned up. He had heard the individual shouting in the Sanctuary and had already been on his way out, so it didn't take long for him to get to the Fields.

The red was a garish glow against the white, dotted here and there with droplets of blood too, now. He winced as he watched the Luxere try to rid itself of its troublesome antlers, sighing but knowing better than to interfere.

The last thing he wanted to do was draw the creature's ire when it was so desperate. Nevertheless, he would stay and he would watch for a while, making sure that no other predators came to claim it after scenting the blood.

Out for a ride in the fields with Kysma, Kalt held fast to the base of her mane as the unicorn cantered through the snow, slightly annoyed that she had trouble running at full speed through the cold blanket over the ground.

The glow of red would have attracted anyone’s eye, and Kalt slowed Kysma to a brisk walk, their breath clouding in front of their faces. He narrowed his eyes and… What the hells? Granted, he wasn’t a native of the world, but thus far, he had never seen any color antlers on the luxere other than the standard. Red? Was this normal?

He watched the creature start raking its antlers against the tree, and the man dismounted from the unicorn with a frown. Approaching the luxere with Kysma following at his heels, he reached up and plucked a carrot from his satchel, couching in the snow and casting a smirk to Ronin who seemed more hesitant in drawing near.

Kalt snapped the carrot in half and held it out, clicking his tongue to draw the luxere’s attention. Meanwhile, Kysma took it upon herself to approach the large deer, sniffing at the animal and unsettled by the smell of blood. If he was trusted enough by the luxere to touch it at all, Kalt would use his magic to help heal the damage it had done to itself.

She heard the yelling as she wandered through the fields. She didn’t have a plan in mind of what she wanted to accomplish this day, but she knew that she had headed toward the Fields before hearing a native of the land screeching about something as she was leaving the settlement. Immediately, a flash of concern graced her features and she tightened her bundle of furs to trudge through the snow toward where others had gone – curiosity and perhaps a bit of worry etched in the lines of her face.

As she approached, she spotted Ronin and Kalt – and was that a unicorn? That deep part of her that held memories not of her own ached at the horn that protruded from the equine, and she found she had to look away from them as her attention moved to the Luxere with a red glow and bleeding antlers. Coming to a halt beside Ronin, she looked over and offered him a quiet smile of greeting before looking back to the Luxere. “What’s happened to it?” She questioned, aiming for concern though her voice were laced with that same honey dipped tone as it always was.

Having heard the cries of a red luxere had certainly caught Remi's attention. Flying in the frigid air towards where the man had declared the beast to be, Remi caught sight of blood in the snow, as well as a small group below. Circling lazily, Remi eventually glided lower, landing and shifting next to Ronin. Glancing with a smile towards Rexanna and Kalt, Remi turned back to his friend.

"There are no other predators around, nor any luxere." He said, a touch breathless as he pulled his jacket around him a bit tighter. "How...they are not normally red like that, are they? I do not believe I read anything about it when I was researching."

Stiffly, he could feel his more predatory nature urging him to shift and put the creature out of its misery. Doing no such thing, Remi instead gripped his arms against his biceps and bit the inside of his cheek to keep his focus.

She, too, heard the cry, and left her shop to see what had caused such a great uproar. Red Luxere was, indeed, a strange event: in her years the girl had not seen or heard of such a mutation, and her curiosity was such that she could not stand idly by. Had her grandmother been there, the old woman would have dragged Amalia out with neither coat nor boot. As it was the baker took her time, calming the fire and dressing appropriately before trudging out into the snow.

The poor beast had garnered an audience, and Amalia was far from the first to arrive. Approaching the place where Ronin and Remi stood, the golden haired girl shook her head sadly. "They're not," she confirmed to Remi's question, deep voice heavy with mourning for the creature. How lonely, how harsh, to be the only one of your ilk, an aberration, alone-! and the girl's heart ached for the creature, for loneliness was a feeling she knew too well.

"We should sing, to calm him. They enjoy song." With quiet movements the girl drew closer, a shaky tune that steadily strengthened coming from her throat.

"The winter moon is shining bright, the Long Night log is burning,
"Good people gather 'round tonight, the world again is turning.
"Welcome, sing to the sun, now rising in the dark sky!
"Welcome, sing everyone, your praises to our lord, Vi!"

Cautiously she inched further forward, hoping to soothe and not frighten the wounded creature.

Jigano had not been feeling well lately. He didn't want to explain why he wasn't getting much rest when he slept though, nor worry his friends. It was easier, sometimes, to spend time in fox form and focus on simple things, like hunting mice and tending his egg.

Mouse hunting had brought him once more to the fields, where he could listen for the scurry of little feet beneath the snow. Listen, crouch, wait, pounce. It was harder than it looked, but helped to hone his aim and his senses, and when he succeeded he received a tasty snack for his trouble. But he needed complete quiet to have even a chance of success, and the silence of the day was broken - not loudly, but enough to throw off his game - by a murmuring of voices from behind a large drifted dune of snow.

Curious, but cautious, the well-camouflaged white fox padded up the low crest and peered over. A most unusual luxere appeared to be attacking a tree while some looked on and another - was that Kalt? And a unicorn? - pestered the poor creature. Jigano flattened his ears, uncertain of what to do. He didn't like seeing the creature's distress, but he wasn't sure he could help as either fox or man. Maybe Caiside could, but... he had no idea if he could find the other man before the deer moved on.

He whine softly, low in his throat, and perked his ears up again to listen to the conversations the cold breeze carried from the gathering of humans - Rexanna, Amalia, Remi, and someone he didn't know - as they watched or sang or murmured to each other at the sad sight.

ZARIAH
I don't give a damn 'bout my bad reputation
Zariah had heard the shouting, and was definitely intrigued. She had heard of these glowing Luxere, the reindeer with light emitting horns. A pity that they apparently stopped doing so upon being cut off. That would have made a nice macobe night light for Beatrix. Oh well. Back to what was currently at hand. One of these glowing deer was glowing the wrong glow. Apparently it was enough to cause quite the hullabaloo so she decided to follow those who went to investigate. It wasn't every day you could see a Luxere with the wrong glow after all.

Besides, if things went poorly, certainly it would be better for someone with magic to be there to save the day. Even without the Hawthorne's breathing down her neck she had a hard time not feeling compelled to protect the people.

Seeing the creature rubbing its horns against a tree, which were quite shocking to see in that bright red, Zariah tilted her head slightly to the side. She stepped up near Ronin, who she knew best of anyone there. After a moment of silence she said quietly, "It appears to me that it is shedding its antlers. Early." Her voice and expression were emotionless, having fully assumed her usual guard in the presence of others. Now she was a far cry from the woman that had accompanied him on the bridge. No joking. No smirking. Poker face. Still, it didn't keep her from making what knowledge she had known. It was a deer, even if it glowed. They shed their antlers periodically, though usually at the end or beginning of a season, not smack in the middle.

Hazel eyes turned to the woman that stepped forward an began to sing. Interesting. Zariah had a nice sounding voice, but she was not about to lend hers with this giant audience until she saw how the animal reacted.

Roana heard the shouting and was quick to respond. A Luxere? Glowing...red? That wasn't right. Not that she had seen a normal looking one yet but she had certainly heard about the glowing animals from others. Red was not a color they used to describe the eerie light that came from their antlers, which certainly would have added either a more horror or comical affect. At this moment it seemed pretty horrific. Putting a hand on the hilt of her claymore, Roana quickly made her way in the direction of this out of place luxere. It seemed she was not the only one interested in this strange phenomenon, but she was particularly glad to see other well trained fighters there. Just in case.

Maybe this was how a Spire Demon was born. Probably not. But it never hurt to be prepared for the absolute worst case scenario in a place that had spire demons to begin with.

"Well that is an unsettling sight." Roana said as she came to a halt next to Rexanna. She recognized the woman but frankly had never met her. But that was hardly her concern at the moment as she watched the creature with wide eyes. Then another woman approached and began to sing to it. What in the seven hells - or however many there were, seven sounded good - was going on? "Red glowing deer, random singing ladies...we are all sure we are awake, right?" she muttered quietly, shaking her head a little bit. This was just wild.

RED?!?

No. That is an abomination, a mutation, and though their little bubble occasionally sees mutations in the generations of inbred creatures, they’ve never seen a red Luxere before. The irony of this thought is utterly lost on Wessex as she forms an instant opinion of this unnatural thing. Then, of course, her thoughts travel to the Outlanders and somehow they are also responsible for it.

Demon gourds. Red luxere. An unusually high amount of God activity, which has never boded well in the past.
She does not - can not - think of the good things they’ve brought with them.

Wessex grabs her bow and darts into the night, following the eventual sounds of the crowd and someone singing. She can eventually identify the singer as Amalia, but even that does not dissuade her. The Ascendant leaps for the lower bough of one of the larger apple trees, climbing up behind the small group of people. Settling herself into a secure position, she pulls an arrow from her quiver and nocks it, taking aim for the weakened creature as it tries to shed its curse.

One breath. A second. Steady. A moment of hesitation, and then - she lets it fly.

i hold with those who favor fire
Lily follows the stream of people out of the Settlement, finding herself alone in the crowd, but rather content to just go with the flow.

She spots a faint red glow up ahead, but it never occurs to her that it might be a Luxere with red horns. Her expression becomes rather concerned as she watches the creature sort of stumble-walk towards a bare tree and begin to rub its antlers on the trunk, shedding bark and bloody strips of skin alike. She bites her lip… this does not seem good. This one was nothing like the healthy, happy (if she is to anthropomorphize it) reindeer she’d found earlier. But then a thin voice rises with an unfamiliar song, and Lily’s ears perk up.

The tune is lovely… she weaves her way around a couple of people and tries to follow the notes of the song, trying to create a harmony to something she’s never heard before. Whether or not Lily is entirely successful is rather irrelevant, as she simply stands behind Amalia and provides some back-up notes, giving the unfortunate Luxere what seems to be a personal concert.

At first the luxere was far too focused on its task to notice the first few who arrived, ignoring Ronin 's carrot and Kalt 's attempt to touch it. Over and over it scraped and rammed its head, blood trickling down its ears and in front of its eyes. Every now and then it would pause, rub its brow on one of its legs, and then continue. Sadly Kalt's magic was not strong enough to aid such a creature, but the soothing feel of it did seem to dampen some of the creature's frenzy.

Turning as Amalia began to sing, the deer seemed torn between scratching at its head and listening. Back and forth it wobbled, knocking its antlers against the tree, but then casting its big and sad eyes back towards the baker. Moving towards her, it lowered its antlers towards her hands. Nudging, it seemed to indicate that she ought to take them and pull. This strange tug-of-war went on, and perhaps they were starting to come loose?

Before Amalia could fully displace the antlers though, Wessex 's arrow came slicing through the air. Though it did not strike the Luxere, it instead struck Ronin squarely in the arm. With a squeal of protest and surprise, the Luxere reared back swiftly. As it did so, the antlers broke off leaving Amalia holding two still-glowing red beams. Not even the addition of Lily 's voice could keep it calm now.

Quickly the creature darted away, flying across the snow propelled by fear.

Oops! Ronin has been shot!

Amalia has also received the following item:

Heeeeey look at that.

He'd been shot.

Entranced by Amalia's singing and the approach of the red Luxere as she tried to ease the poor creature's suffering, Ronin was utterly oblivious to the arrow-mad Ascended taking aim. He had been on the receiving end of one of Wessex's arrows before, but her aim had been a lot better last time. In that she hadn't hit him.

Flinching and staggering back a step or two, Ronin grunted in pain and hissed a curse through his teeth. The Luxere was gone and Amalia was left holding its antlers, but understandably the guildmaster had more important things on his mind. Red pattered down onto the snow from a blossoming patch on his arm, the arrow shaft still protruding from it.

"Anyone lose an arrow?" he grated, letting out a long breath and leaning down to examine the damage.

Well… fuck. Fuckity fuck fuck fuck.

There’s nothing left to do but exit stage left as soon as possible. After watching the arrow miss its intended target, Wessex leaps from the tree, away from the crowd of people and in the opposite direction of the fleeing Luxere. Snow should dampen the sound of her feet. She’d used a new batch of fletching for the arrow that hit the Outlander man, so with any luck they won’t be recognizable.

With any luck, they’ll all be concerned about the squealing beast and the injured man. Wessex isn’t really all that lucky - but she is fast - so perhaps all they’ll see is an empty tree, or the faintest shadow of a person disappearing into the night. And those footprints, if they try and follow, will disappear when she leaps into another tree - then another, and another - until she’s woven quite the criss-crossing path across the Woodlands and the Outskirts.

The only regret she has is that she didn’t aim better.
