It was cold and cloudy out, with the snow falling in quiet waves. The world around her was silent for the most part, aside from the quiet tapping of trees growing too heavy with the snowfall and dropping snow off in the distance or breaking the branches. But this time, she went further than she had gone before – when she had met Phoebe and they had gathered some food. This time, she was searching for the Luxere again, her eyes wide and attentive as she remained bundled up from head to toe to fight off the chill in the air.

Once again, the woman came prepared with apples, knowing that she couldn’t sing like Lily could. If anything, she’d frighten the poor creatures away with her attempts. But she could bring apples as offerings to the lovely creatures. Whether they took them or not was another story, but yet again Rexanna figured that it couldn’t hurt to try. She had made it to the edge of the Oasis – seeing the water iced a little on the edges as it glistened in the clouded light.

But as she moved her head to the left, she saw them again. Along the side of the oasis, a few of them with their beautiful glimmering and glowing antlers, eating and grazing in peace. They would have been hard to spot were it not for their glowing antlers, and she found herself inching toward them yet again, an apple in her gloved hand as her other hand carried the pack of the rest of the apples – her eyes glued onto the target with as much of an open mind and happy thoughts as she could muster.

She stayed in the Oasis for a lengthy period of time, gathering fish, berries, and any other necessities for LongNight. The youth would’ve ventured elsewhere, if she weren’t enraptured by the delicate layer of ice, the snow-laden grass, or the potential enigmas floating along the boundaries. Fangorn was much the same, though he was more enticed by bugs burrowed beneath layers and layers of frozen soil, making hissing noises when he heard one under his gourd frame. Melita would simply shake her head and dig a hole for him, where he could munch to his delight.

Today’s intentions were lined with luxere sightings though, and she mustered the leftover apples from a few trees nearby. It seemed they weren’t necessary in the next moment though, because as she lifted her head away from Fangorn’s latest pursuit, her gaze caught the vivid glow of the deer. She watched and waited for a few moments, trapped, incapable of doing anything, for the girl couldn’t help her loud existence, her boisterous movements, her ebullient, vivacious intervals. They were beautiful, a blend of hues and colors that would’ve seemed otherworldly anywhere else; ethereal and divine.

Rexanna had managed to meander into the clearing too, and Melita yearned to wave and shout from across the glade, but for once she knew better, and understood it wasn’t a situation heralding outcries and howls. So she attempted to slide her way closer, Fangorn taking the hint and bounding along behind her, striving not to disturb the creatures.

There was a bit of movement to her side, and at first she paid it no attention. It was probably a bird, some kind of small creature trying to survive the harshness of the winter. Yet, as she continued to approach the Luxere, it caught her attention again, as if it were heading in the same direction as her. It wasn’t moving very fast, not like a bird would – but with the same kind of caution that she took while she tried to approach the glowing antlered creatures.

Her head turned to look at who approached, and when she realized who it was, it was Melita and a large grin spread across her face. She offered the girl a small nod, and her head tilted toward the few Luxere that remained by the water as they approached nearer – though she paused in her step enough to let Melita catch up if she wanted to. But Rexanna’s attention remained on the Luxere, and she realized she couldn’t carry a tune at all with the creatures.

For a moment, she paused, tossing an apple to the Luxere as she kept her distance. Her eyes slipping to Melita with a slight shrug as the Luxere flinched from the movement. But there was one that seemed particularly interested and approached quietly toward the apple where it had finally landed – tentatively grabbing it gently and biting into it. Turning to Melita, she opened the bag of apples she had brought with her and offered the girl a few to toss toward them as well.

Melita took the opportunity with a fiery grace; striving to approach Rexanna in light, ethereal steps, hoping not to disturb the luxere. She saw a few look up and glance her way, likely trying to decide if she was a predator, a foe, or something else in between. The youth didn’t blame them, and paid courtesy to the rituals in place, while Fangorn stared, clearly venturing towards a decision of what he should do in the incoming actions. The honeybee child snagged an apple from Rexanna’s outstretched bag, and instead of tossing them towards the illuminating beasts, she gently rolled it through the long grass. It snagged against the snow-laden tendrils, and stopped a couple feet away from a cerulean-antlered luxere.

She watched as it dutifully munched, and the youth began to hum again. She would never be as mellifluous as Clementine, nor as soft spoken as her mother, but the youth tried anyway. When they didn’t flee from her tones, Melita presumed it was fine to continue, rolling another few apples to get them closer as her warble proceeded, hoping for the chance to touch one.

As Melita approached, Rexanna dipped her head in a silent greeting – happy to see the girl out and about. Though what she hadn’t noticed before, was the little vampiric pumpkin that had accompanied her. Her head tilted slightly, confusion laced on her features for a moment as she had imagined all of them had perished? And after Melita had been with her while they roasted the very same pumpkins, Rexanna was surprised that she brought a live one with her.

But after a few moments, she realized the pumpkin wasn’t attacking anything at all – and she smiled down to the creature with a tiny wave before offering the apple to Melita. But instead of tossing it toward them like Rexanna had, Melita had the smart idea of rolling it toward them to coax them closer. “Ooh, very good.” She hummed as quietly as she could to the girl as she did the same after Melita had tossed her second one. The Luxere roamed closer, but decided to ignore Rexanna completely it seemed – turning to where Melita and her gourd blocked sight of Rex as the one Luxere looked with intrigued eyes.

It’s snout outstretched toward Melita with a huff of air, as if impatient to be waiting for another apple. Rexanna, meanwhile, had to look around Melita to see the glimpse of the Luxere and it’s proximity to the girl, though a wide smile sat on her lips with the action, even if she was being dutifully ignored.

Melita seemed to have easily forgotten that Fangorn might cause confusion or trepidation. It wasn’t long before that they were busy purging the violent, vampiric pumpkins, she included, and here she was, settled with one as a companion. “That’s Fangorn,” she whispered as Rexanna gave the gourd a directed look. “He was one of the few that survived. I had to take him in.” Then she winked, as if this was the most reasonable explanation to finding a runt of an eerie, enigmatic demon, and therafter, turned her complete attention back to the deer.

She had to stop herself from squealing in delight when the luxere loomed closer to her, its velvetine muzzle reaching out and grabbing hold of her proffered apple. In fact, her hands shook slightly, so excited, so ebullient, to have this ethereal, beautiful creature willing to eat from her palm, as if she were worthy. Carefully, she turned her head towards Rexanna, the broadest grin on her face, an almost can you believe it look to her features, when she realized she’d somehow stepped ahead of her friend, had taken precedence in the eyes of the glowing luxere.

That hadn’t been her intention at all; but greed and mercenary exploits had always been rooted in her blood, in her veins, take what you can get when you can a long-held experience from her childhood and youth spent in the Rift. The girl slid slightly out of the way, her unoccupied hand grabbing hold of another apple and placing it in Rexanna’s palm. The billowing air of the luxere’s breath tickled her skin, and she giggled beneath her vivid, vibrant hum, hoping the others would approach the compassionate woman.

So they did – looming closer and closer, until Rexanna suddenly had a swarm of about two or three surrounding her, each hoping for their treat.

As Melita explained her situation with the gourd, Rexanna could only smile at her. She had a kind heart, but yet she still seemed molded in fire and metal. She was young, but strong, and Rexanna could relate to that in a heartbeat. So she nodded to Melita, understanding shining in her eyes before they had coaxed the Luxere toward them. Melita, herself, almost seemed glowing as the Luxere reached toward the hand that held the apple – infinitely pleased to be fed in the harshness of winter.

Before she knew it, though, Melita’s head turned toward her with a wide grin and bright eyes and Rexanna nodded to her with her own similar smile. It felt almost motherly, and some part of her ached bitterly with the feeling. But soon enough, Melita had moved slightly and slipped an apple into her own palm. Her eyes wide as the Luxere’s velveteen nose graced her hand and the others circled closer like glowing vultures for apples.

But there was something about Rexanna that the Luxere hadn’t particularly liked, and when it had reached out for the apple from her hand and grazed her skin, all three Luxere seemed to try and avoid her – preferring the apple delivery from Melita rather than the gilded woman. Huffing a quiet sigh, she wondered what it could be? Was she that different from Melita? Was it the fact she had magic that made all the difference?

Maybe the Luxere could smell the fire in her blood and were wary of that fact alone. Regardless, Rexanna was still so happy for Melita, and for the chance to at least give one Luxere an apple before it deemed her unsatisfactory.

The honeybee girl had expected the luxere to grab hold of the apple and revere Rexanna in the same measure. The following motions and movements surprised her, made her gasp, brows furrowing, because she couldn’t comprehend why they balked and shied away. Rexanna was kind, generous, and compassionate; hadn’t given a single folly or care when Melita had dropped in on her throughout numerous occasions. She was a reflection of a saint, seemingly – beautiful, wholesome, always eager to help. She was already far better than Melita, who wore her savagery and untamed notions on her sleeve, in her movements, in her motives. Rexanna had taught her how to cook a pumpkin, how to tend to these mystical beasts, and the luxere seemed to scoff, leery and concerned. It was as if a hold of trepidation pervaded through them, and while Melita continued to hold out apple after apple for their waiting mouths, she turned her head back to the other woman. “I don’t understand…”

They’d sung. They’d hummed. They’d proffered food. What else did the glowing deer require? Melita thought about retreating back further and having Rexanna take center stage, so their attention would have to linger solely on her. Even Fangorn seemed mystified, tilting his head back and forth, but proffering nothing either, an explanation completely unknown and foreign. Her smile fell a little, less ebullient and more apprehensive, pondering the further depths of enigmas and quandaries surrounding this land; and if she’d always be so eternally puzzled.

I don’t understand…” Melita began, and Rexanna offered her a small smile. It wasn’t that surprising to her – the previous attempts she’d spent trying to coax the Luxere only kept them hidden away from her. They’d take the apples but they didn’t seem pleased about it by any stretch of the mean. She rolled her shoulders to Melita with a quiet shrug – just happy enough that the girl was enjoying their company when a thought hit her.

Maybe they don’t like magic users?” She hummed quietly to the girl, watching the interactions while the Luxere took the rest of the apples from Melita and sniffed her hand once before turning to leave – their glowing antlers sparkling to show where they were and where they were heading. She turned to Melita then with the empty bag in hand with a slight shrug. “I have some fire and firework magic, perhaps they’re not fans?” She hummed in her sultry tone with a light shrug.

At least with the Luxere now fed and on their way, she could say she tried and return home to the warmth. She gave Melita a wide smile, regardless of what had happened, and looked back to the way she’d come. “I’ll walk back with you and Fangorn if you want?” She questioned with a tilt of her head before gathering her things and beginning to walk back.

It seemed no sooner had everything started, it subsequently ended. The luxere finished eating up their snacks, and began to trudge away, and Melita couldn’t help but feel a lingering sensation of sadness linger in her chest as they maneuvered to disappear. She was, at the very least, grateful for the opportunity, for the chance, to have seen and touched the glowing deer. Her eyes were riveted back to Rexanna as she began her explanation, of magic and fire, of invocations rustled by flames and infernos. Her smile reappeared to full effect – she’d been a fan of enchantments, even if the reindeer weren’t. The youth had a healthy appreciation for all sorts of sorcery, for she admired the unique powers, the ability to condemn, the capacity to destroy. She’d always had to come up with her own methods, motives, and ruses, schemes meant to alter and annihilate without the churning wizardry sizzling through her veins. “Well, I like fire.” The honeybee child winked, as if her opinion was the one that mattered, and not the contemplations of deer. Then the finality seemed to settle over them, and the youth accepted the offer, bending down to grab hold of Fangorn and nestle him in her arms. “Sure! Thank you for letting me see the luxere.”

As Melita mentioned she liked fire, Rexanna hummed a chiming laugh to the girl with a nod. “I’ll have to show you some time.” She added, figuring that she’d show the child the firework magic at some point after Long night was over. It was almost upon them, after all, and she had a bit more preparing to do. So she smiled to the girl again as she hoisted her bag onto her shoulder and nodded to Melita yet again. “Of course! I’m glad someone got some use out of it.” She added with a beaming smile as Melita grabbed Fangorn and they moved on their way.

She had a fondness for Melita that she hadn’t quite expected the first time she’d met the girl. It was almost like Melita had experienced similar things that she had as a girl, and there was some kind of bonding that accompanied it. But where Rexanna had learned to grow up fast there was a brilliant innocence in Melita that Rexanna appreciated and hoped wouldn’t fade out any time soon. She wanted the girl to enjoy things, especially her youth. It was all gone so very fast.
