DEIMOS

Before Caido and opportunities, all the Sword had ever known were his limbs and legs – carrying him across battlefields, through groves, amidst and amongst shadows, partaking in the wayfaring stretch of lives and lands. But no one had asked him such a question, and he wasn’t entirely certain how to respond. He thought for a moment, a stretch of quiet as he swam, as muscles bounded and stretched. Grounded came eventually; weight in the soul, rather than in the sky or within the sea. And yours? Tentacles and the like.

The sudden rally of excitement snapped into the bond, and ordinarily he would be eager, ready, for any sort of bemusement, race, and invoking of competition. But this one he wasn’t entirely too certain of – considering it was his first time below the depths. It might take more than one session to orient himself around, so the denial came on a shake of his head. I do not. He paused, not wanting to take away from the potential rampage and challenge though. Point me in the right direction. Then they could make a swim for it; a telltale Cheshire grin making its way along his features.

Remaining quiet for a moment, Chrys thought about Deimos' question. Only now did she realise that her own question to him might have been a difficult one. Not only had she nothing to compare it to, there was so much to her tentacles and hood (the structure that looks like an umbrella) that she wasn't able to easily describe it. In the end, she settled for an explanation similar to Deimos. Dispersed.

On the topic of the race though, all thoughtfulness was washed away. This way. She pointed in the direction of the pool, mirroring Deimos' grin. Readying herself for the race, she asked Ready? Once a confirmation came from him, she continued. Three, two, one, go! The last word barely spoken, Chrys was already dashing away, using both hood and arms to propel herself forward.

Dispersed was an intriguing notion, and he wondered if it meant something like everywhere all at once, not tied down to any land, any motion, anything at all. There was no further reflection on it from Chrys, and so he was left to ponder over its meaning for another time – as there were games and mischief afoot.

The Sword was half tempted to shift into his seal proportions, to let the natural abilities of the animal take over, bursting and pushing through the water with ease. But pride, and being relegated to the sea in his youth, countered the parameters. With a juvenile grin, he followed in the pinpointed direction, power, strength, and accord unleashed while the air pulsed and raced through his lungs, legs kicking, arms pumping, intending to keep up the pace and charge through currents, tides, and ocean.

Chrys did indeed move quickly, the combined force of the pulsating bell and arm movements akin to those used by normal swimmers propelling her forward in the water. Having ascended from the seafloor by a good bit and the ocean being as it usually was – empty – there were no obstacles in the way. It was truly a race of speed and endurance.

Thrilled by the race, Chrys pushed forward with all the power she could muster. Not necessarily the best idea, which revealed itself before they reached their destination. After a while, she had to slow down, exhaustion setting in. She surely wouldn't stop and give up, she was far too proud for that. But it was evident that she certainly wouldn't win the race.

DEIMOS

While Chrys had a head start, experience, and directions on her side, Deimos had power, fortitude, and endurance keeping him careening through the sea with aplomb. Legs and arms worked together in a union of might and muscle, dragging the glass jar and its rope, and before long he’d caught up to the mermaid, giving her a sideways glance, a peculiar tilt of his head, as he sought to match pace with her for a moment. She seemed to be flagging. You all right? Given her accustomed shift and abilities, he’d figured he’d be soundly beaten – even if the thrill of a challenge kept him onward, bemused, and goaded.

With someone else he knew far better, like Ru or Kiada, he would’ve maneuvered onward with no second thoughts and probably a cheeky grin, or splash, in their direction. Purposefully obnoxious and devilish to the core. This wasn’t one of those cases, and so he remained alongside for a moment.

The equivalent of a sigh was transmitted over the attuned bond. Chrys was irritated. Though only at herself, not Deimos. I'm okay. She'd have to train more so she could keep swimming that fast for longer. Or maybe she should have gone a bit slower from the start to not tire out as fast. But then again, she'd never been one to think things through.

What should be wrong? Think I'd drown? she asked, deciding to opt for humor instead of annoyance.  Life would be boring without some fun. She pressed on faster again, even if she'd only be able to do so for a short amount of time. To show Deimos that he can continue on. She knew she wouldn't win, but she was not a bad looser. If anything, this made her even more excited for when she'd be able to win against him some day.

DEIMOS

Used to multiple lives where people died around him, became injured on a daily basis, and were involved in all manner of chaos, his concern had been habitual, nearly routine. His brows furrowed slightly, then arched as she answered, casting aside his consternation for humor. When it seemed she truly wasn’t wounded, marred, or anything the like (perhaps just fatigued from sprinting onward, instead of conserving), he simply snorted through the bond.

It was a fair inquiry, he supposed, and his tone meandered in a cool, dry affect - a grin curling on the edges of his mouth. Maybe. The notions followed through on a shrug of his shoulders before he pulled away, permitting her space, casting himself onward in the direction of the Miana Pool. Curiosity pulled though, stretching just as much as his muscles, contorting back towards her even as he coasted upon currents and ripples in the sea. What do you do if any of you are injured? Did they have their own healing measures within the ocean?

At first Chrys was surprised to see Deimos return. Then again, why continue the race when a winner was already certain. She thought a moment about his question. If it's a bad wound they get stitches. Otherwise we wrap it in seaweed and just let it heal. There's also healing magic. We don't usually have that, but others do. If things get too bad we just ask for help. She shrugged. It seemed pretty normal to her.

Do you do things differently on land? Maybe they had some really interesting things there? She'd never seen people on land treat their wounded. Then again, the people with the healing magic they asked for help did come from the land sometimes. Maybe they always used magic up there?

For all his inquiries, the mending seemed remarkably similar to anything they might construct upon land. Not so different at all. A fraction feline and canine all at once with the vague tilt of his head, he gave a solid nod, before continuing onward, content in the rapacious edges of the sea, gathering, nearing, the subtle shift of rocky formations ahead. Not really. We have healers with magic, stitches, herbs, and the like. The scars along his frame were hallmarks of many a doctoring from the dais of a battlefield. He wondered, vaguely, if there was plantlife beyond seaweed that could turn similar tricks; but they would’ve explored that ages before, most likely.

After another subtle shift towards the dark masses beyond, he pondered over further complexities. My unicorn heals me. And time, of course, considering the way his incantations and enchantments raised its hackles against the light and refinement of assuaging intentions.

It seemed that the healing methods of the land-dwellers were surprisingly similar to theirs. Then again, maybe not that surprising. Healing was always similar, right? Yet the next part made Chrys curious. You have a unicorn? Can I meet them? She'd heard of unicorns, of course. But they usually didn't venture into the water, so she'd be excited to meet one for real.

Realizing the slow change in their surroundings, she realized they were nearing their destination. Taking a moment to reorient herself, she then adjusted her course slightly. If we want to enter the Miana Pool via the water, we'll have to go a bit more to the right.

He should’ve known the off-handed comment would’ve inspired another spark of curiosity, and he snorted, swallowing down the residual laugh. If she is willing, for the rumble followed with a smirk, insinuating that Zuriel never did anything she didn’t want to do. The haughty, proud mare was worth her weight in any element, but came with a superior, imperious temperament that didn’t always align with others. Chrys would likely be batting the far more inquiring, nosey Belial anyway. As far as inquiries were concerned, they traded the volleys back and forth. Do mermaids have companions too?

The sojourn nearly at its end, he shifted the course of his direction at her insistence, muscles still working in ready form. Content with the pull and labor, training and exercise in its own rights, he continued onward, dragging the glass and rope behind him.

Chrys smirked, content with the prospect of meeting the unicorn if she wanted to. There wouldn't be a reason to meet anyone who didn't want to meet her after all. Though it was sometimes fun to mess with people, which was easier when they didn't know her yet and didn't intend to meet her.

Some of us have. I want one someday. Someone just as curious as her would be best. Maybe a bit mischievous? She definitely wanted someone to have fun with who would accompany her in her explorations. I heard some people befriended their companions and others got them from the gods. How did you meet your unicorn?

As they moved on, the seafloor came back into view, slowly inclining uphill as they neared the coast. They were approaching an inlet Chrys knew lead to the Miana Pool.

Continued similarities made him snort – pondering over the complexities of how mermaids acquired their own. He presumed they’d have to be aquatic in nature too, simply to survive down in the depths of the sea, twisting and turning along the embankments, thriving beneath the undulations. What would you prefer? if given a choice in her bonded considerations?

This hasn’t been the first time someone had asked how he’d acquired Zuriel. He kept up his pace, then coasted for a few moments, kicking his feet leisurely, slowing down as the seafloor began to rise, his form ascending along with it. The incident curled and coiled back into days of weakness, when he was far less capable than he was now – and he might’ve laughed, had there not been other pangs associated with it. She was being chased by a landshark in the Fields, near the Hollowed Grounds. Surely she’d understand the nature of the danger surrounding the notions – Chrys had the ocean counterparts. I intervened. Nearly lost my arm while I slayed the creature. Half a grin formed in the corners of his mouth, softening the blow of what could’ve potentially been another disaster. She probably took pity on me. Healed me. And decided to stay.

Head slightly tilted, Chrys pondered the question. She hadn't decided yet, and she might change her decision again. But as it was right now... I think asking the gods for help would be more direct. The other way, it's usually more by chance. But I think it's too easy. Asking the gods. Of course, there would be quests to take care of. She wouldn't get a companion from the gods just like that. But it still felt less meaningful than actually convincing the creature to become her companion.

Talking about the unicorn was easier. No difficult decisions to be made. Why pity? I think she saw that you risked a lot to help her. Healing you after that is logical, right? As for deciding to stay, Chrys had no idea how unicorns thought. But maybe the unicorn had originally stayed with Deimos to repay him for the help and then grown fond of him. Or some other reason, who knew. Maybe just boredom.
