The air tastes like ashes. You step. You stumble.

Portals make no sound as they close, but behind you there is still the sensation of something sealing shut, and momentary fear digs its claws deep into your belly.

Around you the world is a desolate expanse of grey ruin. Skeletal buildings hunch against one another, half buried in rubble. Roads and pathways split and scatter like torn ribbons. There is nothing but this for as far as the eye can see, and even that is dominated by the shadow of a great, stone spire.

It towers above you, piercing into a sky wreathed in clouds. Thunder purrs in the distance. It begins to rain.

This is home now.

Welcome to Caido! Caido is the continent upon which you currently stand. The next few rounds of posting will help introduce the setting and get everyone set up IC and OOC. This thread must be your first post. You may post elsewhere after!

So that we don't duplicate efforts, we suggest a few Personal Quests be started!
Suggestions:
  1. Finding housing/shelter
  2. Finding food
  3. Exploring the land
  4. Setting up a perimeter/defenses

Key Quests will be popping up shortly as well - keep an eye out for those!

beauty in darkness
madness in light

Here is a list of some FAQ 'TW' information to help you get your bearings.

We don't want to give away too much of the ending of TW, or this current plot, so forgive us for being a bit vague on the details.

  1. The three year time-jump and the EQ are technically not canon. You are free to have your character 'remember' these events as having happened, but just note that the majority of the characters who are transitioning with you won't remember these things as having happened. The reasons for this will become clear later.
  2. Dead characters can return if you want them to ... ;)
  3. In order to have your characters transition from TW to CotF, they must do so now. This doesn't mean you must play them right away, just that they are 'pulled' at the same time as everyone else. The way this works OOC is you make their account and set up all their information, and we set them as inactive. IC, basically they are pulled into a different part of the map (meaning you may have to wait for them to 'come back' depending where we are in the plot). Speak to an admin about this for more info!
  4. How much time has passed between when you last posted on TW and posting now? Let's just say that's hard to say ;) If you want/need this to affect your character's age (as in the case of children/pregnancies), chat with us.
  5. Currently there are no ranks or professions; how could there be, ya'll are in the WILD. Set up your own titles and systems if you want, or you know, focus on surviving.
  6. Honor Points = Merit Points
  7. We have the same 4 stats but you're going to reset all of your values and go off of our system (it means more stats for you!)
  8. Though the races are all now slightly different, for simplicity's sake, Accepted = Original, Attuned = Shapechanger, Abandoned = Magic, and Ascended = Bloodfiend

Basic changes for shapechangers: You automatically start out with one animal shift like before, however you lose the ability to use telepathy and partially shift. These are unlocked fairly early so don't worry! You can also unlock more animal shifts as you go, gain the ability to compel/control other animals, and can even unlock a mythical form later on! Also no more shape changer cuffs. This means you aren't immediately recognized as your race, but also you need to find a way to carry your own shit :| When you shift you'll keep your clothing, but nothing else. Attuned are created through a different mechanism than TW, via a pact with deities known as the ‘Old Gods’.
        - A shape changer's hair no longer needs to resemble their animal forms.

Basic changes for blood fiends: No more daylight rings (sorry!), instead as you level you unlock daylight resistance. You are still super fast, but we nerfed those abilities a bit because, physics. Bloodfiends are no longer sired in the traditional sense: they are 'made' by deities known as the 'New Gods'. You still have fangs and can feed on others (and you gain temporary powers by doing this!) but ultimately to stay alive you need to 'feed' from one of these New Gods. Basically you are a biologically upgraded and superior race; by questing with your gods you can get all sorts of cool body modifications ;)
        - Their hair also remains the same colour as it was!

Basic changes for originals: Ya'll are now jacked stat-wise and are beloved by all of the gods and are more likely to receive gifts and things. You also start with Willpower (the ability to resist certain types of magics).

Basic changes for magic originals: On TW we felt like the magic originals were OP as hell, so you'll find that at lower levels you don't have access to as strong magic. However we've eliminated the elemental/magic original distinction and though we still have magic 'types' (light/dark/grey) you can have all three if you like (the only exception being that life drain and healing are incompatible). Basically how magic here works is that you unlock 'slots' and then need to fill them. You can fill them by participating in RE (Random Event) encounters, meeting gods, winning/earning them, etc. As you unlock magic, you can then upgrade it to make it more powerful, and once you're at a high enough level you can earn custom magic slots that can be whatever you want them to be!
        - A lot of the magical consequences have been removed (e.g. dark magic makes you 'darker' - though definitely play this up if you want!). There is also no more resurrection magic (this would be a custom magic), and all consequences of healing have been removed as well.
  9. Minimum WC of 100.
  10. The description field below the thread subject when making threads is for mature content/trigger warnings (or whatever else)
  11. 18+ to join.
  12. Discord server for chatttttttttts.
  13. Mini quest = Personal Quest, with some differences (about content/difficulty, etc).
  14. Core Quest/Epic Quest sort of = Key Quest. These are still admin run, but happen much more frequently and are usually plot-related.
  15. New prizes for using your MP!
  16. We now have seasons! 1 season = 2 months OOC time. Because being pregnant for 7 months is a pain, if your character gets pregnant they only remain that way for 1 IC season.
  17. We'll be doing CotS (Character of the Season) ToTM (Thread of the Month) and QotM (Quote of the Month)!
  18. There are lots of gods and other beings flailing around. Better be nice to them! Or don't! Up to you.
  19. Your character can now have an animal companion.
  20. All information is now tracked on your profile.
  21. Your former avatar size is the same as it is here, so you can just copy/paste (or use our image uploader).

Edy
fuck you <3

Come the fuck again?

Suddenly Edy was standing...where exactly? Looking around like some sort of startled animal–nostrils flared slightly and dark eyes wide–Edy took a steadying breath as she tried to get her bearings. The last thing she remembered, albeit through what felt like a fog, was trying to .... cheer Koel up? Was that right? Blinking hard, the teenager looked around swallowing hard. Her ears popped and rang, but physically she appeared to be just fine. That was probably the weirdest part of all of this. You'd think suddenly materializing somewhere fucking random would have some side effects other than a bit of disorientation.

But nope.

Looking around for her family–such was always Edy's #1 priority–she first spied Loren. Stumbling his direction, she reached out a hesitant hand towards him, though it was unclear if the gesture was meant to ask for consolation or to give it. "Loren what the fuck," she all but whispered.

Looking around and seeing nothing but flat dead looking earth with a dark spire thrusting through like some artist's phallic representation of hell, nothing about this looked familiar at all. "I don't–" Glancing around, she didn't immediately see Neron, or Astra or Sulis in the crowd of scattered individuals. She might have seen Zariah but it was unclear if that was the (former?) head or not. "Loren where are we?"

Between one instant and the next...something happened. Elyna wasn't exactly sure what was going on, but she wasn't happy about it. Normally, she liked to be in control—or at least know what was going on—but in this particular case she had absolutely no idea what was going on. What she did know was she didn't like it. As soon as her vision settled, she whirled around, trying to identify her surroundings. However, what she did see didn't exactly fill her with a great deal of confidence: a strange spire stabbed into the sky, and the earth was dead looking. Wherever they were, they didn't appear to be in Northaven anymore.

This wasn't good. She knew there were stranger things than she'd ever imagined in the world, but this seemed strange even for them; indeed, the dread settling in her gut was hard to ignore. "The fuck..." However, she didn't have time to panic right now. No, right now they needed to figure out what was going on—and who had done this to them—so they could fix this and get home. While Elyna hadn't exactly been a huge fan of Northaven or its people, this desolate place seemed even worse. At the same time, though, the spire was hard to ignore: it was such an obvious landmark (and the only one) that it seemed likely it would contain answers.

First, though, she should try to make sure everyone was alright. She personally couldn't feel pain, but she could feel, and it did seem to her that her body was intact. "Everyone alright?" Their safety had to be their first concern, it seemed to her. However they'd been brought here—wherever 'here' was—they needed to make sure they weren't in danger. Once that was sorted out, they could figure out the rest.

Ronin remembered... pain. He couldn't recall if it was emotional or physical (it felt like some foul mix of the two, some heaviness in his bones that he couldn't shake), or if it was recent or older. But there was pain, and then... grey. A spire? He coughed through the dust, straightening up and rubbing at burning eyes, squinting to tilt his head at the obsidian shard jutting into the sky above them, bathing them in shadow. He didn't... where was the Wall? Where was anything?

"Hello?" He called, hearing a few other voices in the near distance. A few wobbly steps brought him within sight of Elyna and Edrei, both of whom he recognised as fellow guardswomen, and also... Loren? Something within Ronin relaxed instinctively, even if none of this made any sense whatsoever.

"Nobody looks injured," he remarked back at Elyna, jogging up beside her and calling out for any others to make themselves known and come closer. "How many of us are here? And where is here...?"

I had a dream about a burning house. You were stuck inside, I couldn't get you out
I lay beside you and pulled you close. And the two of us went up in smoke

Did the air here feel any different? Inhaling, the alchemist (or former alchemist, perhaps) tried to focus on any salient differences that he could. To focus on everything that was around him would be to invite madness. There were simply too many inputs for his mortal mind to comprehend. No, he needed to take this slowly, lest he collapse beneath the weight of what had happened.

Kneeling, Remi raised his head and gaze ever so slowly. The ground was barren and dead looking; crumbled and without life at all. Ahead he could see the base of a monumental black spire that rose forbiddingly above, but Remi didn't dare to actually lift his gaze high enough to look upon the dizzying heights. No, instead he focused on his breathing.

The air was dusty here. Stale? Or was that merely a trick of his senses? Spreading a hand out over the soil as if to reassure himself that this was in fact real, Remi turned his head over his shoulder slightly to see a handful of those he recognized spread haphazardly out around him. Blinking slowly, he looked back towards the ground.

He hadn't seen them. He'd only looked for a moment, but he hadn't seen Martha, Delphine, Vai or Ianto. More importantly, he hadn't seen Loren. You didn't really look, he tried to reassure himself, but he couldn't bring his muscles to bring his gaze around again. Wherever they were, whatever had happened, he could survive this if only they were here. If he was here. And if not?

Swallowing Remi closed his eyes and clawed his hand into the acrid ground beneath, picking up a handful of soil and letting it sift slowly through his fingers.

Dizziness and disorientation overcame Isla, the medic instinctively putting a hand to her head and closing her eyes. She had been... in the library? Or was it the infirmary? Or was it... no. She wasn't in any of those places now.

The world tilted beneath her feet and she stumbled out into a grey, barren landscape, squinting about at the numerous voices and movement. She recognised Edrei's voice among them, and saw a group starting to form. Trying to be as careful on her feet as possible, she approached.

"This must be a dream," she muttered, half to herself, as if believing all those around her to be constructs created from her imagination.

The huntress had been asleep, napping away the afternoon for a bit in the shade of one of the trees in the Untamed Lands - only, upon waking, she had found herself lying prone on a cold, stone floor caked with dust and ashes. It stank of decay, of something old and unused, and she rolled herself to her feet in moments to glare about, trying to get her bearings.

Only... there were none to get. It was like being dropped into a monochrome painting, only it felt and smelled and sounded far, far too real.

Voices echoed nearby, and Vervain stepped closer to them before noticing, out of the corner of her eye, a familiar looking man kneeling in the dirt.

"Remi?" Vai crossed to him, dropping to lean down and rest a hand on his shoulder hesitantly. "Are you... what happened?"

Koel...couldn’t remember how he got here, and that, more than anything else, more than the bleak terrain, terrified him. At least he wasn’t alone: it seemed that there was a whole crowd around him. But not everyone was here, as far as he could tell, and that meant it wasn’t enough. There were people missing—his people, as he’d sworn to protect and care for them—and that meant he’d failed. For now, though, he had to focus on making sure those here were taken care of.

Honestly, this place looked more like some of the blighted battlefields Koel had seen as a soldier than the Northaven he’d come to know. While that worried him, no one around seemed to be actively hurt and nothing pointed to danger; the spire in the distance was ominous, but also in the distance and he would worry about that later. For now, they had to figure out who was here, who was missing, and find some shelter and supplies. “Let’s stay calm, everyone.” He raised his voice—which was loud enough to be heard over a battle—and tried to draw everyone’s attention to him. It worried him that he couldn’t see any of the other leaders of Northaven (Ronin excluded), which, in his mind, meant he was at least partially in control. Unless and until someone with more authority showed up he’d take charge.

To that end, he’d try to keep some semblance of order for as long as he could. “Anyone know what happened or where we are?” Without that information, it would be a lot harder to get anything done. Still, Koel was a former scout and as such well used to exploring potentially hostile environments. Nodding at Edrei, who he'd ended up next to somehow, he reached out to give the younger woman's shoulder a reassuring squeeze. They'd figure this out and get through this, just like they'd gotten through everything else.

To say Loren was confused would be an understatement: the librarian had gone from...actually, that was all a bit fuzzy, but he’d gone from Northaven to whatever this desolate landscape was. It was bleak and barren, and he couldn’t help the sense of foreboding that crept up his spine as he gazed upon the spire in the distance. If that wasn’t spooky, he didn’t know what was. However, he only had a few moments to look upon it—and to examine everything else that was going on—before chaos broke out.

Suddenly, it seemed as if everyone was talking and freaking out at once. Unlike most people, the Launceleyn didn’t really panic; instead, he kept his head in a crisis situation. Spotting Ronin, Loren was tempted to go over to someone who could restore order, but first he had to take care of those he cared about. The first person to call out to him was Edrei, so he made his way over to her and gave her a one armed hug, slinging his own arm across her shoulders. “Hey. We’re okay. We’ll figure it out. Let’s take stock.” So far, he couldn’t spot any of the other family members, but they had to be here. Otherwise, Loren didn’t know what he would do.

Then, he moved on to someone else: Remi wasn’t looking too good, and while someone was already there taking care of Loren’s….whatever....the Launceleyn knew he had to go over. Ignoring the woman for now, Loren kneeled down and placed a hand on the alchemist’s shoulder. The contact wasn't enough, but it was all Loren had to give right now, at least until they could figure what in the world was going on here. “Remi. It’s me. You alright?” The librarian kept his voice pitched low, in a soothing whisper, still worried that something awful might jump out at them at any moment.

More and more people were appearing through the dust and the ashes, and Ronin felt suddenly that they were very exposed and very scattered. He inhaled deeply and let the breath out again, before nodding to Elyna. "Corral people closer, if you can?" he asked. "We don't know anything about what's out here. If this place is hostile, we don't want to be easy pickings, and we can defend ourselves better as a group."

So saying, Ronin scanned around the desolate are and found a sizeable boulder to clamber up onto. He cupped a hand around his mouth to amplify his voice. "Northaveners!" he called, as if to address any of them that might be out there. "If you can hear me, gather around! We need to work together now more than ever!"

At Ronin's instructions, Elyna nodded. She didn't need to be told twice: until they got some clarity about what had happened, they needed to act as if they were still in danger. Of course, Elyna already assumed she was pretty much always in danger (since she was always surrounded by men), so that was nothing new. "On it, sir." Although he was a man, Ronin was one of the few exceptions to her hatred from them, so she would listen. It helped that he was the only superior officer worth his salt around and about.

Speeding over, shocked to discover she felt slower than before, Elyna grabbed Edrei. "You're on crowd control with me. Take one side, I'll take the other." The other woman was a soldier as well, and Elyna felt they needed all the help they could get. With that, Elyna started looking for stragglers at the edge of the group. Any soldiers she found would be roped into guard duty, while any noncombatants would be gently, but firmly and insistently dragged to the center of their group.

Edy
fuck you <3

Leaning against Loren Edy sighed and nodded, her lips twitching. Now was probably not the best time to bring this up, but she couldn't help it. "Winding up in a random ass field without any explanation, calm cool and collected Loren. Getting a hug from your fam? Shit hits the fan." The younger grinned up at the former-duke, meaning to communicate that not only was she kidding, but that she was grateful for his composure. As he pulled away, Edy nibbled on her lip and glanced around wonderingly. Loren was headed towards some random–wait no, it was that shape changer who had tried to tear down the notice. Weird? Whatever.

As Koel's hand found her shoulder, Edy glanced over and up at the former Overseer. In her mind she heard the sound of breaking glass and her own voice telling Koel they weren't in a fairytale. Looking around, that was certainly true. This was a fucking horror story if it was anything at all. Reflexively her hand reached across her body to grab Koel's as her dark eyes found his. Shaking her head, she gave her shoulders a small shrug. "0 ideas." She said with a smirk. "Although..." Narrowing her eyes she glanced around frowning. "Is Bellamy here? We were just talking about this..."

Only a few days prior the Master Chief had all but predicted this it seemed, asking her what she would do if she could leave Northaven behind; where she would go and what it might be like. And now here they were.

As was work, apparently?

As Elyna grabbed the teenager and forced her away, Edy stiffened slightly falling into old routines. "You got it." She quipped with a grin; they might be in the middle of fuck who knew where, but Ely still outranked her. Or did. Or...you know. Something.

"EYH." Edy called loudly, parting from Elyna and moving away to where some stragglers were standing. "CAPTAIN'S TALKIN'. GIT." Making shooing motions with her hands, she tried to corral as many as she could towards Ronin.

I had a dream about a burning house. You were stuck inside, I couldn't get you out
I lay beside you and pulled you close. And the two of us went up in smoke

Her presence like a calming rain as it always was, @Vai was at his side and suddenly everything felt as though it might be alright. Immediately he placed a hand over hers as he turned his head ever so slightly to catch her out of the corner of his eye; knowing that she was there more than necessarily needing to see her. Spinning nimbly on his toes, he turned to sweep the huntress into a hug, rising up and hopefully pulling her up with him. Breathing in the familiar scent of her and burying his face in her dark curls, the alchemist smiled despite himself. "I honestly don't know." He said, releasing her and stepping back. His lips were in a diagonal line as his brows furrowed slightly. Looking around at the desolation that seemed to engulf them, Remi exhaled the breath he'd been holding. "I can't..." Closing his eyes to think, Remi shook his head slightly. "I don't remember what I was just doing...before I was here, I mean. Do you?"

Though Remi had followed the protocols of society all of his life, and despite the fact that he had absolutely nothing to indicate that the confines of morality that he'd so struggled with (especially so) in the proceeding weeks had been lifted, he found himself drawn to the former-librarian almost immediately.

Relief crashed through him like some tangible force, simultaneously making his stomach flutter and drop as he gasped in a ragged and relieved breath. Uncaring of who was around or what it might mean or how he should comport himself in the wake of this sudden upheaval, Remi tried to wrap his arms tightly around the Launceleyn. "Loren." He breathed against the nape of the man's neck, inhaling deeply against him, his hands pressing against Loren's upper and lower back as if to reassure himself that the man was indeed real.

Pulling back–though not wanting to in the least–Remi gave Loren a subdued but heartfelt smile.

"Oh!" Vai couldn't hide her grin as she was swept to her feet and into a hug by the hawk she had grown to see as another child, the huntress embracing him back and holding him tightly for a moment. "I had just settled next to the river... I thought I was dreaming, but this doesn't seem like any kind of a dream I'd have..." Stepping back, she satisfied herself that he was alright and finally released him properly, tucking one of her unruly curls behind her ear.

Glancing around, she was about to suggest that they not stay in one place when, all at once, a familiar librarian came striding towards them. She wondered what he was doing until Remi turned to wrap him in a hug, the huntress internally connecting a few dots in her mind but choosing not to mention anything out loud (she would wait for Remi to come to her on that one, thanks).

Smiling and dutifully looking away to let them have their moment, Vai arched an eyebrow as she spotted two guardswomen attempting to shoo them towards where Captain Taliesin was trying to account for everyone and the Overseer was trying to keep the peace.

"Perhaps we should gather with them?" She suggested to the two men, feeling a sudden pang; if Remi and Loren were here, her daughter and husband would be too surely?
