For once, the pit Amalia has sunk into is literal.

Wrapped up in her failures, the girl teeters on the brink of disaster, claustrophobic and corrupted by her cage. It is not an altogether unpleasant prison, objectively speaking, but to the prisoner it is gilded with shame, a hundred mistakes plastered and carved upon the rising walls. She has just learned to fly, but her wings are clipped; just tasted freedom, only to be pushed back down. Miserable, melancholy, she circles around the familiar pool of despair and wonder if she ought to let herself drown.

She had only just begun to learn to swim.

It is the arrival of Kiada which galvanizes the girl, convinces her to hide her woes for the sake of her friend, her cub. And so Amalia rallies, swallowing the creeping anxiety and doubt which tears and bites and scratches her mind and hiding it behind a stoic mask, soothing and leading, planning and pleading. An attempt to escape yields nothing but more bruises; exploration shows a single bed and some food, but little else to be had. The day draws on and fades to night, and with it fades any hope of rescue, that glimmer of peace.

So when stars appear and the others go to sleep, Amalia stays awake. Restless, anxious, defeated, enraged, the baker turns to that one constant, the only thing which gives her solace: faith.

Beneath the sliver of moonlight which pierces through the trees, the girl sits cross-legged on the ground, her eyes upturned to the heaven, narrow face searching for answers in the sky. "Please..." Amalia whispers, so as not to disturb her companions. "Please, Old Ones, if you can hear me... tell me how to help my friends."

Amalia
Her eyes, they know too much.
She'll treat you like somebody but you just can't touch.

Above the stars seemed to shimmer and shift, and the guards ambling about, playing guards, bitching, sleeping, gambling, or eating suddenly drew a swift breath in unison and looked up.

There in the sky was a starwhale. Without any sort of depth perception or objects nearby to compare it to, the creature looked as though it was impossibly large. Was it close? Far? The stars that swirled around it gave it no sense of scope, but of course in the face of something so magnificent such practical questions hardly mattered.

Bellowing a sound that was reminiscent of rusted bells being played during a thunderstorm, the creature swam slowly across the sky, a wake of stardust splashing playfully in its wake.

And then, an answer-

Or so the girl believes. For how could she believe anything else, faced with the beauty which graces the sky? Even the guards grow quiet, still, their reverence a hushed echo in the suddenly bright night. For above them passes not a shadow, but a being of radiance almost as great as anything the girl has ever seen. Rising to her knees, Amalia watches in rapturous awe, her surroundings momentarily forgotten in the beauty of what she sees. One slender hand reaches out to the sky, as though she could touch it, could catch a wisp of its stardust wake and clasp it close to her heart.

"Safrin," the sunlit girl breathes, starlight reflected in her dark eyes. It is a sign, she knows, a blessing from the goddess, a reminder to be strong and bright in the blackest of nights. "It's beautiful."

It is a reminder of why she came out here, why she ventured beyond the barren circle of her former cage. There is beauty in the world beyond, and wonder, and Amalia will not be kept from it.

She will not be trapped in this pit.

Above Delah stands, eyes shiny with remembrance and joy that she can bear witness to the galactic travels of one of these creatures. They are rare indeed, and rarely do they fly so close. Glancing down into the pit she sees Amalia standing in the moonlight, an arm raised to the heavens.

"A starwhale." The chieftess says, her voice low but carried downwards by her magic. Part of her thinks Amalia is unworthy to even gaze upon it, this magical and wondrous creature such an ingrained cornerstone in the Fae's histories. Part of her thinks it is a good omen.

Suddenly a fierce gale begins and though Delah is a master of the winds, even she appears wary of the sudden change. The pressure in the air drops and a chill cascades over everything making the fae-girl shiver. She barks something in her strange language and her soldiers scatter to fulfill her command. "A storm is coming. I would go into the tunnel." She calls down to Amalia, moss-eyes like specks of flint from above.

Delah's voice is low and reverent, but Amalia hears it nonetheless. Reluctantly she turns her attention from the creature, peering through an owl's eyes at the fae above before turning back to the wonder in the sky. "Starwhale," she repeats, her own voice an alto song, the word a velvet thing on her tongue. A beautiful name for a beautiful creature. "A masterpiece of Rae and Vi."

She does not know if the chieftess can hear her, only assumes it goes both ways. Emboldened by the whale, the vassal of Safrin, the sign of her gods, Amalia glances again at Delah and clears her parched throat. "May... may I come up there? To see better? I won't try anything." There is a quiet plea in her tone, but strength, too, like pliable gold. She does not want to beg from this moment, but she knows in her soul this is something sacred, special, and she wants and yearns and aches to be nearer, if only by a handful of feet.

Delah's first instinct is to say no. This is a creature of the woods, of their skies. A 'natural' though Amalia may be, she is not of this world, not really. Her presence here is an interruption, and an unwelcome one.

Still...

The sight of the starwell calms something inside of the chieftess, and before she can change her mind, she nods curtly to Amalia. Assuming the girl will fly up, Delah readies her magic to ensnare the girl's wings should she not make good on her promise.

As the storm brews, the suddenness only matched by its intensity, the starwhale above is obscured by the cumulation of great and destructive looking clouds. Mournfully almost it seems to call, the sound of its song now like stones plunged in a frigid lake.

From the centre of the cumulating storm an opening appears. But it isn't an opening really, it is something pushing through. The figure it small at first, a burning ball of vivid periwinkle light that shoots from the sky like a comet. Twisting and trilling it begins to fall.

The sudden storm is fierce, gale-like, and for a moment Amalia fears her words will be stolen by the wind. Her raised arm becomes a shield, feathers sprouting as she attempts to guard against the rising zephyr. It stings and whistles, yet when Delah suggests she retreat inside the girl can do nothing but shake her head, a sudden laugh tearing from her throat. Not for the world would she miss this sight, give up this chance to view such beauty. Snow could fall, lightning strike, and still Amalia would not retreat.

When Delah nods Amalia is swift to shift, her wings beating hard against the force of the gale. Powerful, they carry her up and up, closer to the lip of the pit, the whales, the storm. She pauses as she reaches the top, talons touching the dampening ground, her promise one she intends to keep.

Except-

Except-

A mournful sound, like a million hearts breaking. Amalia turns her eyes to the sky, where the great whale is now obscured by clouds. From her owl's beak comes an echoing devastation, sorrow ringing in a great, low note. No-!

And then a light is falling, crashing, plunging through clouds and sky and down, down, down-

And Amalia glances once at Delah, her wide eyes expressive with unspoken intent, begging forgiveness but not asking permission. I have to.

Without waiting for consent or reply the owl beats her wings once more, launching herself into the sky and toward the falling star, no thought in her head except for the creature, that note of sadness an echo in her soul.

"NO—" Delah snarls ferociously, and though she wants to grab for her magic and shuck the disobedient owl from the sky, she has her people to worry about. Amalia might not know what is happening, might think she can foolishly help by what? flying above?, but Delah knows the truth.

The fae at the mouth of the pit suddenly clasp hands, a silent order given that they all immediately obey. With heads bowed their lips and bodies move in unison. A song not unlike the one the starwhale above sings bursts forth and Delah's magic accompanied by dozens of others begin to knit a net, the voices of the fae like tangible strings that run betwixt the lines of wind. It hovers above the treetops, their voices making it firm and taut even as the star, the whale, continues to fall...

The storm has separated the calf from its mother, the storm one in space and time. Echoes of lightning flash, their energy thousands of years old, and the air smells of humidity and decades gone by. This is a truth that the fae know that Amalia does not; the sky has always been home to the starwhales, but they swim in time, not necessarily in space. Storms like these are the bain of their existence, tossing them through seas of years that glide by them like so much disturbed water.

Eventually, though the voice of the mother is strong, it dissipates across the centuries that now separate it from its child, the storm a blight in the midst of their travels.

Below it hears the singing. It knows the song is not made by its kind, but it recognizes the emotive cadence of it and instead of falling, it begins to swim in earnest down towards the ground.

Towards the pit.

Towards Amalia.

Delah's denial is a fearsome thing, but Amalia does not fear rebuke. All she fears is for the fate of the whale, the falling star so radiant, so lost, cast out of the sky by a crippling storm. Great wings beating in time with her heart, the owl is a bullet outlined by lightning, single-minded in her focus, ardent in her need. She can hear the song of the Fae below her, their music an echo of the great beast above. Beautiful and mournful, it urges her on, and despite the burn in her muscles she pushes higher and higher into the sky.

She is fast, but the whale is faster, a comet plummeting with the aid of gravity rather than against it. Large and bright and fiery and untouchable, it casts a light nearly impossible to see through. For a moment Amalia hesitates, not sure if she ought to proceed, if she is correct. But there is something in the cosmic fire, movement, life- the owl catches sight of an eye, and her heart aches with renewed determination as she nears the babe.

Extending her wings, Amalia lets herself turn down into a dive, gliding alongside the glowing creature. Spiraling around it, she tries to guide it toward the waiting fae, ready to swoop in should it seem to have lost control of trajectory or be in any imminent danger, regardless of the risk its starfire may pose to her feather and flesh.

Through the tendrils of her magic Delah can feel Amalia's presence. She wants to shriek at her to get out of the way and to stop interfering with things she does not understand. If not all of her magic was wrapped up in the fall of the child she might have thrust Amalia back into the pit—or straight into a tree. But as it is, the chief's focus is inwards, and her eyes are downcast as she weaves the net for the child.

Distracted easily as all young things are, instead of continuing in a relatively straight angle of descent, the whale begins to wibble and wobble slightly, its fins making almost clapping-motions as it tries to mirror Amalia's wings. This of course, given its speed, makes its descent immediately unsteady. The straight line becomes a gyroscoped-curve and quickly notes of fear replace its happy coos.

There is a mixed reaction to her attempts to help. The infant starwhale's joy is a contagious thing, briefly soothing Amalia's concerns. She wishes her avian face could smile- and with that wish comes a slight shifting as something like a mouth develops beneath her beak, her face half-shifting and contorting to resemble that of a tengu. "That's it!" she calls into the wind, laughter and delight in her voice. "Look at you, you're doing it!"

Ah, but then it all goes sideways- literally, in a sense. The whale's movements offset its fall, and Amalia's laughter dies on her lips as the creature begins to spin and whirl, fearful noises leaving its throat. "Safrin!" the bird-girl cries, aloud and in her mind, extending her wings to try and scoop around the whale, redirect it to the waiting fae. "It's going to be okay, little one. I've got you. Just go toward the music with me."

Dark eyes scan the approaching ground, looking for Delah's in the crowd. She does not trust the fae to help her, but she trusts them to save the child.
