DEIMOS
Delivered from the blasts
The motivation drove him, scarred him, reaped the benefits of his roaming, bestial figure, made him scale corners and scathe in the pits of his torment. Agony and the unknown pushed him further, and it was a fervent, ferocious rush of insurrection, treachery, and incoming disaster, affixed purpose and aspirations. He drowned out the rancorous edges and noises coming to claw their way through his membrane (the sights, the sounds, of their experiences, the what ifs, the end-all-be-alls), because otherwise he wouldn’t be able to focus on the task at hand. It was a discordant serenity, a brilliant, blistering darkness at the aperture, along the threshold, where he promised to bleed the world dry.

The last he’d seen of Ianto had been along the Stonesong, amidst flames and weapons, curses and columns, a broken, dilapidated bridge conformed to ensure they were safe; a fox crouched on his shoulder, proffering a debt to be repaid. From what Jigano had experienced, he was also deceptive and misleading – the warrior would have to be more than an idle, looming threat. Perhaps it remained to be seen and they could have an even exchange; obligations for obligations, no cowardly footfalls, no specious, devious lies stored behind ivory teeth and twitching ears. Deimos had more to lose, and he’d already experienced those tremendous agonies, those serpentine synapses, those tremulous, terrible awakenings – and had no intention of wandering down those same roads, doom and triumph colliding, paradoxical forces.

“Ianto!” He called out as he reached the edge of the woods, staring into its void, tracing over footprints from others, and then eyes glancing down at the marks, some clawed, some birdlike, some padded. The Reaper ground his teeth against one another in the only show of rage he dared deign, before affixing the composure, the steel, the damned, bloody iron, back to his features, giving no sign to the wily deviant lurking amidst the timber.

IANTO
At first, nothing. Then a few will-o-wisps scattered from the undergrowth just at the corner of Deimos's line of sight. A step or two after them, Ianto emerged on two legs rather than four, as though called from wherever he had been by some ethereal sense of debt. It might have caused some to laugh, but it was indeed that obligation that dragged him from the Wildwood against his better judgement. Because a debt was owed, and Ianto was bound by his word to deliver.

"It is good to see you outside of a column of fire, my friend," he called, his lilting voice echoing through the long grasses that separated them. He didn't instantly move closer to Deimos, his hands buried deeply in the pockets of his long coat, his coppery hair swept back out of his face. "What can I do for you?"

DEIMOS
Delivered from the blasts
The will-o-wisps were the first sign of incoming forces, and he thought about raising his hackles at the curled formations of light and deception, but with Ianto appearing, he thought better of it. “Likewise,” the beast offered in response, a nod following, processing the pathway he wanted to traverse upon. His eyes glanced out at the rolling expanse of timber and copses again, willing one of his companions to come springing out from the undergrowth, no harm, no foul, everything a cruel, callous ruse. But the longer he stood there, the more he understood they wouldn’t be – trapped and snarled and snagged by the claws of the unknown. Which was why he was here, lingering along the threshold and aperture to foretold attempts at liberation and deliverance; information was a bounty he craved and longed for, and despite Jigano’s already pressing sagacity on the subject at hand, the warrior wanted to hear it from Ianto as well. “Do you know anything about the recent disappearances?” He nodded towards the woods, as if the fox wouldn’t be able to ascertain what he was talking about without further provocation – breathed, inhaled, exhaled, so his features remained nonchalant and indifferent when the tides kept at bay were anything but. “I believe my friends are in there, and I intend to help get them out.”

IANTO
"I know enough about them to not wish to be involved with it," Ianto said slowly, knowing better than to dupe too much the man who stood before him. Not only did he not deserve it, but Deimos could probably pop his skull between his two hands like a grape. Ianto wasn't keen to be a grape.

"I believe, though, that they do not need 'getting out'," he said slowly, vaguely, like a tailor trying to desperately stitch back together some meta-holes in the timeline.

"If you wish to become better acquainted with the Fae, though, that I can help with. After all, if something similar were to befall your friends in future, you would want them as an ally rather than an enemy, no?" He tilted his head, wondering if that would be enough to satisfy the big warrior.

DEIMOS
Delivered from the blasts
Were Deimos in a more cheery, obliging mood, he might’ve rolled his eyes at the insinuation of not getting involved; anyone who knew the Reaper enough could likely understand he had every intention of bombarding his way through the anomalies and intricacies to get to those he cared about. It was resolution and determination, but it was also rebellion, something born and bred in his flesh, in his lungs, in his soul, baptized on the battlefield when walls of men seemed to stretch into oblivion and he dug in to simply survive. The beast was not one to abandon those he cherished; it was an unsaid promise, a vow of assurance, layered and lacquered within the breadth of his chest and ribs; passing over the vague notions of do not need getting out and ignoring them. It would come in time – in measures and slips of instances when everything was put in place.

Did he wish to become better acquainted with the unfamiliar Fae though? The bestial shades of his curiosity were always a mighty, potent thing too, and a series of queries and questions managed to coil their way back into the outset of his Machiavellian mind. Why had they captured his friends? What did they stand to gain from it? And what lurked beyond those woods, besides endless trees and secrets? “I suppose,” he mustered in response, pondering where Ianto was going with this particular frame of speech, piercing gaze segmented back upon the other man. Deimos was much more acquainted with the notion of enemies, adversaries, and opponents; but allies were not something to shove away. The manipulative denizens of his skull forced him to tilt his head, an, obvious inquiring gesture, imploring Ianto to continue, momentarily distracted and deterred from thundering his way through the copses and glades.

IANTO
Ianto waited with baited breath to hear whether or not he would be able to persuade Deimos away from storming the Greatwood as though it was a castle in the middle of a seige. And when the response came, however begrudging, Ianto let out that long breath and felt his shoulders relax. He smiled a touch at Deimos, shifting into a half-bow of both gratitude and acknowledgement. Slowly, the fox stepped up to stand beside the bigger man, folding his arms across his chest and appraising the woods before them.

"The Fae, as you probably can guess, are one to attune themselves with the Old Gods. To nature and Rae, to Vi and to Mort. A lot of their traditions are based on those nuances, and there's one that comes to the fore during Longheat. The tradition is known as 'capturing the sun'. Have you heard of it in your travels, so far?"

DEIMOS
Delivered from the blasts
Old Gods, New Gods, likely didn’t make much of a difference to the Reaper. Neither had ever responded to him favorably. Neither had ever glanced his way. Neither had saved those he cherished. But he listened anyway, because it was better than remaining an ignorant boulder tossed within the trees, stupefied and inept, ineffectual and discordant, because he had yearned to chase down newfound opponents instead. He strived to relax, to settle the weight along his shoulders down the length of his spine, but it remained just so, teetering along the edges and fringes of his muscles, undulating, coiling, furling, waiting there to strike him again. Time was of the essence, but so was information, and he’d be a fool in the worst possible way to shove him theories and beliefs into the threshold, to bury his head in the sand rather than turn his ear towards stories and myths. There might be something he could use in the midst of it all, beyond the enigmas and the quandaries, the spells and invocations of sacrifices, the mystery and awe cracked and reduced.

He might’ve once tied himself to nature, to the elements, as his parents had done: fire and water, flame and purity. Death had reigned on his blood, on his ichor, on his invocations instead, made the path to virtue and paragons difficult, and despite his great strides, strives, and lengths, nothing ever worked out accordingly; just destruction, just mayhem, just devastation. Perhaps the Fae coaxed the woods, the grains, the fields, the leaves to work in their favor, regarded by the ether, the air, the otherworldly adornments as one of their own. Capturing the sun had never even crossed his mind (unless they were describing Amalia), and he quirked his brow, curious all the more, piercing gaze remaining on Ianto. “I have not. What does it entail?”

IANTO
"What, indeed." Ianto grinned across to the other man, a picture of roguish nonchalance against his more brooding figure. "It's an old LongHeat tradition. There's a story that the days grow longer during this season because the Fae capture the sun. They weave a basket, or trade for one, or acquire one somehow, and use it to try and catch the sun's rays." He chuckled. "All an act, of course. But it's a bit of fun."

Speaking of sunshine, the fox rolled his shoulders, enjoying the feel of the warmth on his back. "Of course, whilst this all goes on, due respect must be paid to the lady Safrin of the stars. We don't want her to get jealous and bring the night back too soon, do we? So gifts are presented to her, songs are sung in her name... you know, the usual sort of thing."

DEIMOS
Delivered from the blasts
The roguish indifference and boyish mischief was unfortunately lost on him for time being – in another moment, he might have been just as shameless and wicked as Ianto, nothing to less, everything to gain; instead his unruliness was marked in defiance, coiled along insubordination, a ticking bomb waiting to for the right moment to sizzle, already entirely kindled and incensed. He breathed, inhaled, exhaled, strived to find a balance between listening, scholarly exploits, and not exploding into a rush of rash, chaotic, bedlam exultations; taut and rigid, taking in LongHeat traditions when his palms burned and his frame was desperate for action. A bit of fun was not what he had in mind (something thoroughly more relishing and intoxicating, treacherous and not obliging in the slightest, longing to break down doors, walls, and tree limbs, boughs would break and villages would fall).

The temper flaring against his tempestuous ramparts wasn’t helping the situation; they were out there, and he was here, locked into discussing sunshine, baskets, and capturing the sun. How was weaving a basket meant to help him or any of those trapped and locked in the unknown? Or were these further mysteries he was meant to unlock, supposedly intending to help him once he crossed his way through valley and blood?

He struggled imagining the depths of the sun shining into someone’s woven reeds; but he stilled, striving for something amidst the upheaval. “And what happens after?” After the beams of light have been serenaded into snares? After Safrin of the stars has been entertained? After gifts are extended?

IANTO
"After?" Ianto echoed, unconsciously stepping a fraction away from the other man, as if his growing ire were something physical that the fox was able to pick up on. "Well, in the middle of LongHeat there is a midnight festival. Everyone brings their basket, and a gift that they might put into someone else's. It's a celebration of 'releasing the sun' again." He smiled, folding his arms back across his chest and glancing sidelong at Deimos.

"That festival might best be a way to build bridges with the forest folk," he said, imagining that his frankness would be appreciated over any flowery language. "Make your gift worthy, and attend the festival. Show that there is common ground to be had."

DEIMOS
Delivered from the blasts
Another festival; this world already had more festivals in a year than his homeland had ever bothered to embrace (though, it might’ve been because Isilme had far less to celebrate; parades and fanfare came from conquests, not idle, broken defeats). His chest and shoulders lightened only very briefly, since he’d rather enjoyed the latest round of parties, dances, and gatherings (friends and other things found nestled in the restoration of light, but he wouldn’t be able to repeat it if he couldn’t get to them). “Interesting,” he mused, and it wasn’t a lie; his mind became slightly more pre-occupied by these other nuances and notions than carving the forest apart – building bridges with forest folk, with the Fae who’d snagged and whittled at his companions. It led to more queries and inquisitions, and despite his stillness, his frozen composure, the smallest of smiles thawed on the edge of his mouth. “What sort of gifts do they consider worthy?” What would endear a branch of individuals and company they barely knew anything about, that was far older, christened from the earth, than them? Or would it even matter in the end – a host of gestures and tokens given, and to what end? Was there any common ground to be snagged and ensnared, or had they all already overstepped their boundaries, stemmed from curiosity, the fortune suddenly not favoring the bold?

IANTO
It was interesting, and it was the first time that Ianto had really been able to involve himself in the festival. He'd arrived (aka: fallen into) the Wildwood just as the midnight festivities were ending, and so there had been no catching the sun for him last year. This time, however, he was keen not to miss out. As for the gifts, he hummed thoughtfully and smiled across at Deimos.

"I imagine any gift that comes with a story would be appreciated. Or anything unique or quirky. And if in doubt, tools or food or supplies are always going to be received well." Tipping the other man a wink, his smile grew as sunny as the weather around them. "Does that explain the tradition well enough for you, friend? I know it seems childish, but... sometimes showing that you're willing to try is the first step to making connections."

The detailed list of gifts was adequate and gave him enough to work with: what to bring was another matter entirely. How much of a story did he want to exploit, lend into the atmosphere? He was fortified and walled off, carefully composed and constructed so very few wanted or managed to climb over the ramparts; the ones who had were trusted, respected, and beloved. Perhaps he could entertain and cajole with other venues and myths, legends and fables not linked to him – back into either worlds that had baptized him in blood, fury, and regret: gods who failed, who maimed, who desecrated, but also manifested, emboldened, and sent them home. At the very least, if he couldn’t come up with anything, he could always hunt or create something from his bare hands. It settled him, rooted him to the ground, a distinction, an idea, a notion, past the hatred and vitriol, the curling, coiling, clawing animosity contorting its way into his membrane; softer, lighter, without the pulsing, maddening edges. He nodded in respect to Ianto – who didn’t have to tell him anything at all – attempting to convey the notions and sentiments of connections to a beast who rarely grasped any at all (who fought for them, who strived for them, who died for them). “It does. Thank you. I will try my best.”

IANTO
Ianto had been unsure what to expect at the culmination of his tale, and gratitude was right up there on the list of things he hadn't accounted for. It startled a smile onto his face, bright and bold and honest, and the merchant dipped into a half bow before Deimos. "Any time," he said. "I hope that we will see each other, then, at the midnight festival. And until then... well, you still saved me from those flames. I don't consider this story much of a debt, so my obligation to you still stands."

Straightening back up, he winked at Deimos. "Just be kind, when you do call on me to cash in that debt. Okay?" With a quiet laugh, Ianto promptly shifted back into a fox. The vulpine dashed and darted and played about the beast's legs for a few moments, before loping back into the forest undergrowth.
