DEIMOS
Delivered from the blasts
He took his time from the back, maneuvering into and within the crevice, slippery, slimy conjectures beneath the soles of his shoes, a threat in and amongst itself; without the pressing claws, the sinking knives of darkness (and he knew shadows intimately, like old friends, but not this sort of abyss, the kind of Stygian anchor wrapped around one’s chest). The river might’ve continued to flow in here, filling in every nook and cranny, seeking low spots and holes, circumventing its power over and over again. He thought, well beyond, were the faint echoes again, calls and cries for help; bewitching, obliterating, pulling against the tide, the sole reason they were all here – striving to seek out those who yearned for asylum.

An outcry, a shout of Remi’s name echoed from ahead, from the girl Phoebe, and he moved, drawn to swift action because he was there for protection, arms and munition, slaughter and devastation when required. He was meticulous in his thundering forward, machinations remembering the slick surface, the pitfalls and puddles just enough to be another trial and tribulation. But he was flowing in blind animosity, simply following the sounds of thuds and shouts, Wessex lunging forward too, forces in masse, and he presumed she’d have better eyesight, she’d be able to view the thing, flickering behind her, the warrior with senses made for closed quarters. The problem of unknown confines and stabbing blindly wove its way through the current crisis: he could concoct a series of things, but all of them would be at risk when he couldn’t see, when he couldn’t judge, when he couldn’t truly ascertain.

Precision and control had always been skills he proudly possessed, and there were always an interval of options; his magic, his sword, his knives, his hands. So he reached forward as best he could, near Wessex, near Remi, near whatever eluded them in the space of crag and crevasse, struggling to lay his fingers on foe instead of friends. Ordinarily, he wouldn’t even have to think about it: death and mauling, lacerations and injuries, combining his military efforts into warrior ministrations, stabbing, stabbing, stabbing. But there were others to consider, not just himself, not just this unfamiliar object in the dark.

What else could he do? The moments for his calculations swiftly ended, and he breathed, dared to try and compose accuracy, precise, measured. Then there was a muted glow pulsing from his right hand, emanating, a dagger pulsing and pervading, created from his invocations, before proceeding with a single onslaught, aiming, intending, to drive the keen edge into the adversary’s flesh. And all along, he begged and pleaded in the pervading madness, in the shadowed interludes: not them, not them, not them, don’t hit them.

------

Deimos rushes forward, hopefully beside Wessex, trying to get a feel for the tentacle. When he thinks he’s found it, he creates a dagger and tries to stab it.

If the thing that the tentacle belongs to hears Remi (oh, and it does), it shows no sign of bending to his will. In fact, the alchemist would hear it laugh in his head - a sound simultaneously slimy and grating - before it turns to a tinny shriek that he would hear both in his mind and without.

Pim's sharp teeth had closed around the tentacle, causing it to release Remi and slither back into the wall. The movement would cause Deimos's own attack to miss (boo!), and the others to go stumbling back with the alchemist in tow.

But all was not quiet; no, not quiet at all.

As the tentacle thrashes its way back into the rocky wall, there is a sense of something massive shifting around. Before your eyes, more tentacles emerge, and a further few boulders rumble and drop from the ceiling. Ominously, the structure still stands. (For now).

Deimos does a stab at the tentacle and MISSES!
Pim does a bite at the tentacle and HITS!

There are falling rocks everywhere. D:

Phoebe
I've been very hopeful so far
Now for the first time I think we're going wrong
Hurry up and tell me this is all a dream
Or could we start again, please?

Phoebe tugs back on Remi, falling backwards as he is suddenly released from the grasp of whatever it was that held him. She feels an odd sense of victoriousness bubbling up in her chest, recognizing it as Pim’s, who must’ve been successful in attacking whatever it was. But it didn’t last long, as suddenly the thing that attacked Remi became clear – a tentacle, now accompanied by others as it thrashed. Phoebe gasped in alarm, ducking off to the side, trying to drag Remi with her, to narrowly avoid the boulders.

Pim lets out a mighty squeak roar at the tentacles, waiting for one to wave close to bite at it again. If he managed to do so, from deep within his belly he would breathe rainbow lightning onto the tentacle – well, more like electrical sparks. He was a baby after all. ”Pim! Be careful!” Phoebe shouts in alarm, her worry and anxiety for the little dragon met by Pim’s own bravado. He was here to protect, and protect he would!

Phoebe dodges and worries after her dragon. Pim tries to bite tentacle 1 again and breathe baby lightning on it.

'Under here!" Remi loudly calls to the group as the shower of stones and boulders around him flares brightly in his mind. Arms raised for environmental context as much as to control his magic, Remi tugs an earthen shield to life creating a cave of stone and dirt above his head and those who would come and stand next to him to protect them from the falling boulders.

Without being able to maintain his focus on more than just the earthen roof about their heads, Remi blindly (no pun intended) grasped for the fallen boulders and thrust them back towards the creature, judging its location based on the mental pulses he could feel of it as well as the scent of it sucked in through a nose that had become quite leonine.

Remi uses mastered earth magic to make a roof to hide under from the boulders, and then uses upgraded telekinesis to throw the boulders back at the tentacles.

out of the night that covers me
Wessex stumbles back as the tentacle releases Remi. She slips, tries to avoid Deimos, and wrenches herself in the opposite direction - which, unfortunately, means the face-down Ascended is unable to get under Remi’s earthen shield and watches the rocks fall on top of her. She curls up, protecting her head - and the missiles fall on her ribs and side. Thank goodness she doesn’t need to breathe, and doesn’t feel pain - just that something isn’t right in that area of her body.

The Ascended snarls, fangs bared, as she pushes herself up.Fuck that,” she mutters to herself, and ends up standing in a very Wolverine-esque pose, fierce determination on her face and claws unsheathed. A quick scan around her tells her that Remi’s working his magic, the girl is utterly useless (her dragon, not so much - the only saving grace) and Deimos has been hit too.

She leaps in after Remi’s boulder storm, aiming for the closest tentacle to her (let’s go with 4), and does her best to slice and dice the thing into slices of calamari with vicious, measured swipes of her claws.

Wessex waits until Remi's thrown his boulders to leap in and attack tentacle 4 with her bio-claws

DEIMOS
Delivered from the blasts
He missed.

He couldn’t remember a time he’d been such a ridiculous mess; nothing accurate, blundering and stumbling his way through a dark cavern, incapable, ineffectual, useless. Perhaps not since he was a lad in training, bright-eyed and wondering how he was going to change or devastate the world, one sword swing at a time (and how quickly he’d been proven wrong, set right down on his backside).

It was happening again – the dragon’s teeth managed to wound the tentacle draping from the wall, slithering back into its confines, but it meant that Remi fell into the floor, and they along with him – his dagger ineffective, clustered in his hand still as he crashed into the ground. Were he not in present company, he would have released the most bestial growl, so frustrated, so annoyed, with his damned self. An infant lizard was contributing far more than the Reaper.

The beast clenched his jaw, and then more rocks descended, along with escalating tentacles, corresponding to a larger thing, mayhem, in the depths. He shielded his head as best he could as he rolled along the floor, but one more stone knocked down into his shoulders, rattled and gnawed at his skin; pain, pain, pain, crawling to Remi’s makeshift barrier. Thank you, he wanted to say, murmur in the dark, I am sorry I am not enough piqued on the edges of his mouth too, but everything else was silent, still. Underneath it, he inhaled, he exhaled, then intended to return fire.

The draining essence coiled in his veins yearned to stretch, ruin, and obliterate, and he allowed it – slinking and simpering on unknown, silent strings, basking in the hollowed, drenched, voracious reaches, intending to aim at any and all of them; death, death, death – the only thing he could recall and revel in.

----

Deimos is hit by another stone along his shoulders. He crawls underneath Remi's shield, and tries to use his life drain magic on any tentacles within reach (but for fun, let's say tentacle 2).

Oh what chaos ensues, in the dark (yeah did no one light a lantern or what?), in the damp, in the deep. Tentacles flail, the structure around the group shudders - but doesn't fall, thankfully - and there is a ruckus of dragon claws scrabbling, rocks thuding, claws singing in the air.

And when all is said and done, one tentacle has been crushed by boulders and withered by magic, slithering back into the wall of stone. The other three, however, still want to play with you all.

What do you do?

Pim attacked Tentacle 1 and MISSED.
Remi blindly (as in, I randomly rolled for it) attacked Tentacle 2 and HIT.
Wessex attacked Tentacle 4 and MISSED.
Deimos attacked Tentacle 2 and HIT.

Tentacle 2 has been taken out - but it did get an attack in first!

Tentacle 1 attacked Phoebe and MISSED.
Tentacle 2 attacked Deimos and HIT.
Tentacle 3 was lonely, so it attacked Deimos as well but MISSED.
Tentacle 4 attacked Wessex and MISSED.

Ending HP and post order:

Phoebe: 42
Remi: 260
Wessex: 38
Deimos: 18.5

Frustration. Anger. Rage.

But no pain. For that, Phoebe could momentarily breathe easy. She was doing her best to keep an eye on the little dragon who was living up to his name of resolute protector. But in the dark it was difficult, the sound of Pim's frustrated growling the only real indicator of where he was. Based on the emotions she was getting from him, he had missed. "Pim! Be careful!" she called worriedly to the baby dragon that shared her soul.

Pim of course responded by attacking the tentacles again, with a bite and baby lightning breath.

"Remi, can you make a lantern or something? We need light!" Phoebe asked, hoping he could. That might give them they edge they need!

Pim attacks tentacle 1 again, with a bite and baby lightning breath.

Phoebe asks Remi if he can conjure something that would give them some light.

there’s a light that you give me when I’m in shadow
The world was a blur of sounds and attacks and injury, and Remi could hardly make sense of any of it. Luckily though, two of his friends were thoughtful enough to give him instructions that he could easily follow.

Feeling Deimos against him, the alchemist quickly created a few torches wrapped with cloth, and some flint and steel. Without being able to see however, there was no way that Remi could reliably or quickly light the torches that Phoebe had ordered. "Deimos, here—" He murmured beneath the apparent safety of his earthen creation. "For light." The alchemist added.

Frowning at the reaper's admonishment of injury, Remi (uselessly) turned his head over his shoulder, sensing Isla through their bond. Deimos is weak, can you help him without risking your own safety? The alchemist queried through their bond. But unicorn or no, Isla was still a healer and had been trained as a combat medic. Hopefully given that none of this had been said out loud, the unicorn could stealth her way towards the earthen hovel to heal Deimos.

Remi creates 2 torches and the means to light them, giving them to Deimos. He also silently instructs Isla to heal Deimos.

This isn’t working! Not quickly enough. Wessex seethes at her inability to make so much as a scratch on the tentacles. At least she can see and dodge, which is more than could be said for the others. Everything is all over the place. There is jubilation at the small victories as one fleshy sucker tube goes down - but that still leaves three more. She leaps to the right side, reliant only on her body, she cannot in good conscience go and hide behind the earthen barrier.

Background noise tells her everyone is still relatively ok, but she hasn’t any idea how close it’s getting for Deimos. Which is for the better. If she’d known, she’d have told him to get out, because she doesn’t want to deal with an angry-sad Amalia. “Hey, Remi -” she calls out while visually tracking one of the tentacles. “How do you feel about a bite? This up close and personal shit isn't as effective as your magic.” And then she leaps towards the flailing thing again, claws outstretched, doing as much as she can in the only way she knows how.

-----------------------

Wessex asks Remi to let her bite him for the magicz and then goes for Tentacle 3 with her claws.

DEIMOS
Delivered from the blasts
The shield didn’t matter; he was struck again before long, a stinging maelstrom piercing through his right side. It seared and tattered along his ribs, an outburst of pain he couldn’t extinguish fumbling on a gasp, on a quaky, shaking inhale, lungs shocked, body bearing onslaught after onslaught. He couldn’t recall ever being this weak: so used to his power, his brawn, his determination – and there came a point where he wondered if he’d die there, amidst the dark doldrums of the cavern, chasing down outcries, surrounded by chaos.

Remi must have sensed something awry; passing flint, steel, and torches (light, light, light in the brooding shadows) while his unicorn arrived, closer and closer still, a healer, a medic in this damned world. His hands shook as he scraped the flint against steel and the dry cloth, waiting for the realm to suddenly ignite before his eyes, bowing his head to the unicorn’s ministrations. “Thank you,” he proffered, a billowing breath, as the torches were incensed, kindled, into a burning, blistering, beautiful inferno in his palms. He raised them as high as he could despite the aches, suddenly a beacon, a lighthouse, in the abyss.

The tentacles took shape amidst the shadows and columns – three more – and as he was mended, piece by piece, he took aim again, life draining magic emboldening on the heels of exhaustion, on the wake of further potential, of annihilation, of his own rooted devastation. They inclined and reaped, aiming for anything along the path.

- - - - - -

Deimos takes Remi’s offered torches and lights them using the flint and steel. He then holds them up high while Isla heals them. Thereafter, he aims his life drain magic for Tentacle 4.

It is a shame that the torches are only lit after the dragonling goes in for another nip. Regrettably, the tentacles are lithe and ever-moving, and once again Pim's target darts around. It is a blessing, though, for in its acrobatics it does not manage to lash out at its opponent either.

Wessex, however, finally strikes gold. Well. Flesh. Her claws sink in deep and, in the dark light of the cavern, the tentacle quivers in pain and ineffectually flails about. It is unable to get at the Ascended, no matter how hard it tries.

Then there is Deimos. The unicorn makes it to him successfully, and he would feel his strength renewed as she touches the tip of her horn to his cuts and bruises. Regrettably, in the time it takes for this to happen, coupled with his lighting of the torches, his attack falls somewhat short of the mark. In return, the tentacle whips out and lashes him afresh!

Pim attacked Tentacle 1 and MISSED.
Wessex attacked Tentacle 3 and HIT.
Deimos attacked Tentacle 4 and MISSED.

Tentacle 1 attacked Phoebe and MISSED.
Tentacle 3 attacked Wessex and MISSED

The little dragon roared squeaked in pure frustration, which made Phoebe feel terribly uncomfortable. ”C’mon, Pim! You can get it! Just try again!” Phoebe called out to her little dragon encouragingly. Maybe some support would help him as he attacked the first tentacle once again, trying desperately to bite down and shock the flailing thing. Her eyes then moved to Deimos, who looked worse for wear despite being healed.

”Deimos! Come under here!” she said, worry in her voice. She had no idea who he was really, but she didn’t want anyone getting fatally wounded here. Wessex seemed to be doing fine on her own though, and she was impressive to watch.

Third-time’s a charm, Pim tries to bite and shock tentacle 1 again!

Isla's presence was as soothing as it was nerve-wracking. Can you...do unicorns kneel? He whispered into her mind in a flustered tone. Deciding it didn't matter, Remi raised the height of his impromptu-shelter to keep Isla close and safe if she was now going to be properly in the frey.

With Isla's eyes as his guide, Remi reached for the boulders that still lay strewn around the cave. Feeling for the creature with his beastmaster skill as well as visual input from Isla, Remi hurtled another set of boulders towards the tentacles still bent on attacking the group.

"Deimos, I am blind—" Remi panted after the strain of his continued magic use. "You will have to tell me if you need Isla to heal you again." He added in a low whisper, as if this weakness might somehow be to the creature's advantage.
