The Guild Hall had been decorated for the occasion of the first proper meeting of the Loreseekers, with Remi’s flameless crystals providing light from the fluorescent liquid in their hearts and a few faded fabric streamers strung from the great mirrored chandelier. Small plates of snacks had been set out along the long central table, which had been cleaned of books and papers for the occasion, though a number of other curious objects had been set there instead, and scattered about the hall on shelves and in corners.  Four small tables had been set around the main room at the cardinal points, and an empty dish placed in the center of the great table, though its purpose was unclear.

The Provost himself sat at the head of the table, Isuma perched on top of a box beside him, happily reeping greetings at new arrivals as people filtered in. Jigano smiled welcome to each, waving them to get food and drink – tea, cider, and beer were all available - and find a seat to make small talk until the next person arrived. When all who could make it had gathered he finally stood, raising his own glass to toast them all.

”Loreseekers, friends, it is my honor and pleasure to welcome you all to the Guild Hall to meet your fellows formally, and get to know each other. It is my hope that we will all feel able to call upon each other in times of need, and that we will help each other as our specialties and individual strengths permit. Tonight, though, is about celebration, getting to know each other… and a bit of fun, I hope!” His grin was a touch wicked, blue eyes sparkling as he swept them over his colleagues. ”I’ve come across an item that would be especially useful for our field agents, but in order to decide who should receive it I thought we could play a few games to test your abilities as quick-thinkers and puzzle-solvers. For now, though, let’s start with introductions, shall we? As you all know, my name is Jigano Silversmith, and I helped to found this guild along with Amalia, Samuel, and Isla.” He nodded gratefully to those who were present before continuing.

”I was a bard and oracle of Numeria before I came here, and while I am still those things I am also a Loreseeker of Caido now. This little one,” he gestured fondly to Isuma, the cat-sized gryphlet an elegant mix of snowy owl and snow leopard as she sat happily on her box and wriggled with the desire to bounce around the table and offer her greetings to each of her friends. ”Is Isuma, my companion.” He tilted his head with a wry smile that his friends would recognized as he inclined his head. ”My specialties are research, exploration, music, and mythology... and anything else I can wrap my mind around," he admitted with a grin. "Who will go next?"

Sam had shown up early to the event. Normally, nights focused on socialising were nightmarish ideas to him, but he hoped one ran by Jigano, who was more than aware of his neurological difficulities, may prove itself easier to navigate.

He sat near the head of the table (but did not presume to sit next to Jigano, assuming that space was to be left for some mysterious, more important person) and listened with a faint smile to the speech, clutching a warm cup of tea close to his chest. As his name was mentioned he breathed out a little embarrassed huff and looked down, though his smile only grew.

Sam was sure he stood no chance of winning the contest, but he was glad to be there anyway, felt good to be a part of something.

Wanting to get it over with, he stood up after Jigano. "Um...my name is..is Samuel Wordsworth, though I'm sure most of you..already know...um...I make books and I am writing a lot of things down for the guild...and I am interested in stories." Hoping that that would suffice, he sat back down.

She's imperfect, but she tries
She is good, but she lies
She is hard on herself
She is broken and won't ask for help

Testing abilities feels like a recipe for disaster, as far as the baker is concerned. What can she do but produce bread and sing a little, and get into trouble along the way? Still, she answers Jigano's summons, both as a guild-member and as a friend, if not eager then at least willing to try to contribute to this lost cause.

She arrives after Samuel, slipping in the great Hall door with the silence of a wraith, quiet and unassuming - save for the starwhale who follows in her wake, singing out a joyous song as Isuma comes into sight. Sighing, Amalia shakes her head, all efforts of stealth dashed away by her companion's exuberant nature. With an awkward smile she finds a seat near Sam, greeting him with a quiet nod and a word of gratitude for his place on the rescue team.

Then it is Jigano's turn to address them, and Amalia listens in silence, her dark eyes glittering with a quiet pride as she watches her friend take his place at the helm. He mentions his history, and specialties, before suggesting they all do the same - and this the baker balks against, suddenly deeply uncomfortable with the idea of proving her right to be here, some misplaced sense of worth.

She is grateful when Sam goes first, though the whole thing remains rather more stuffy than she would want. Rising hesitantly, Amalia clears her throat, one hand reaching to pull a lock of hair. "I'm, ah, Amalia Chandrakant. I'm a baker, but, um, I know a little about the gods, and the history of Caido, I guess."

Caiside had promised Jigano he would make time whenever the other man called together the Loteseekers, though he hadn’t been expecting the i fiation to come so soon after their conversation in the drop. Though Caiside supposed be should have, the guildmaster was a very busy man, and Caiside was excited to get to see the fruits of his labour’s.

He was not the first to arrive, not that he had been intending to be, but Caiside was early enough to fill a plate and get himself a drink and still get the best seat available. After checking quickly to ensure there wasn’t any kind of reservation of course. There was a lull after he took his seat, a moment that Caiside used to nod a smiley greeting at Amalia, and gri madly at best one at Sam. The former god wasn’t one to ruin someone else’s night with a grudge, especially not one that was meant to be fun.

Jigano stood, pulling Caisides full attention toward him as he introduced the night. The mention of fun brought an amused smile to his face, but the mention of a prize had Caiside leaning in, his chin resting in his palm. He could already be described as compeltitive at best, the lure of a prize only stoked that flame all the more. Then? Jigano introduces himself, and invited thee others to do the same.

Again, Caiside was not first, and a good thing for it. Much as he lived to talk about himself, he knew this was not a stage, and the two who preceded him gave him a rough idea of how much to share. He stood just as Amalia sat back down, an easy smile on his face. ”I am Caiside Annatar, former denizen of a land called Dyosh’ana. I pursued many studies there, but was never a part of a group such as this.” He paused to smile warmly at those who had assembled. ”On my world,  I was working on a catalogue of all the creatures and plants I wanna countered, and I would like to do the same here.

He smiled fondly at all three of those who had managed to come, though he regretted the absence of Killian and Maea, both of whom he hadn't seen in awhile. Still, three loreseekers - friends, colleagues, and something of a family to him now - had made it, and he nodded at each as they introduced themselves. When Caiside had finished the Provost rose again, grinning conspiratorially around at his friends and lifting Isuma off the box so he could open it towards himself. He sorted through several envelopes, selecting three and passing them out with a twinkle in his eye.

"Please, open these. Inside you will find a riddle, a different one for each of you. Solve them on your own, and then share the answer you come up with and I will let you know if it's right or wrong. If it's right, you'll get a point towards the prize!"

Samuel would receive a page with this text:
A five letter word: I’m a staple you cook
Remove one letter and you’ll finish a book
Swap the beginning with the end and hold me near
Now drop one more and listen here

Amalia would receive a page with this text:
Black to red to yellow and back
Hard to harder, if you have the knack
The more it’s beaten the stronger it grows
But bends to your will the brighter it glows

Caiside would receive a page with this text:
My gaze is your gaze
Ever watching, never seeing
Look within me to see truth
But not reality.

What conundrums! What answers can you come up with? No posting order this round.

Sam took his envelope with a heavy heart, sure he would make a fool of himself. He was not stupid, but he had never been good at quick thinking or puzzles. He was better at things when he had time to think them through, didn't have the pressure of staring eyes around him.

But he had to try, so he took his riddle out and stared at it. At first it seemed entirely incomprehensible and he despaired, wondering if Jigano would tell him the answer and not give him a point just so he wouldn't look silly before the other Loreseekers.

Suddenly though, a thought came to him. A staple of food...did it work? Read...dear...ear...it did! So surprised he'd come up with a working answer, Sam blurted out: "Bread! Is it...is it bread?!"

Amalia blinks at the envelope, already feeling in over her head. She cannot say she is surprised by Jigano's choice of activity, and she raises an eyebrow as the cards are dispersed, smirking dryly at the bard. The baker is not clever, or particularly good with puzzles, but she will try for camaraderie's sake.

Drawing the card out of its casing, Amalia stares down at the words. Black to red to yellow and back is a strange collection of colors. Tilting her head, the young baker thinks, trying to come up with some sort of answer and really only thinking of one. It feels strange, and not altogether right, but...

Amalia murmurs down at the paper, her alto voice a careful hum. "Is it metal?"

In stark contrast to his fellow assembled guild mates, Caiside seemed positively delighted by the prospect of a riddle game. Jigano’s dramatic flair with the envelopes, the planning and detail that had gone into this, it was all what Caiside had come to expect and appreciate about the bard. He accepted his envelope with a smile, opening it delicately and taking the card out, but waiting until Jigano had finished speaking to actually looo at it.

Caiside had an idea of what the answer was with the first line of his riddle, though he wasn’t sure by the end if he was maybe over thinking it. Sam blurting his answer out beside Caiside made him look up, eyes narrowing as something clicked. Bread? Hadn’t Amalia said...? And then her soft answer came, and Caiside turned his head to look at Jigano, wondering what exactly he had planned.

”A mirror.” Caiside offered the answer casually, leaning back in his chair. He didn’t know enough about Sam to be sure if the answer fit in with Jigano’s answers, or if he was seeing connections out of nothing. It was going to be fun to find out though.

Jigano sat back and waited, teasing Isuma's tail with the look of a cat with cream on his whiskers as his colleagues set about their riddles. Each had been crafted with care, and two more remained in the box beside him, to remain unopened for this particular meeting. He felt a pang of regret over his missing people, but soon enough Sam's voice spoke up, and Jigano looked at his friend with a quizzically raised brow that relaxed into a broad grin at the answer. He nodded, pleased that the quiet bookmaker had been the first to solve his riddle. "Excellent! A perfect answer - and in good time, too!"

Amalia was next, quiet and uncertain, and his smile softened for his heartsister. He tilted his head thoughtfully as she answered, his nod slower as he considered. "Not as specific as I intended, but the riddle does lend itself to vagueness. A point to you as well, and my compliments."

He had expected Caiside to answer first, in truth, but the ex-demigod answered in style instead, as casual and relaxed as if he'd written the riddle himself. Jigano winked at his friend, offering a half-bow of acknowledgment for the calm confidence of the answer. "Exactly, my clever friend. A mirror it is!"

He looked around at them all, pride flashing in his eyes before his grin curved into a more mischievous bent. "So you can solve riddles... but can you make them?" He opened the box again, withdrawing writing sticks which he gave to Isuma to deliver to his friends, the gryphlet happily bouncing to each in turn to drop off the implement and receive a few pets for her service. "If you'd be so kind... please turn over the pages your riddles are on, and write a riddle of your own on the blank back of the paper. When it's done, please hand it to the guildmember who best matches the riddles you just answered."

A test of skill in making riddles, and in how well they knew their guildmates, though one he hoped wouldn't be too hard. Again he sat back, taking a roll from his plate to nibble as he watched his friends hard at work and curious to see what they would come up with to stump each other.

Now's your chance to pull ahead! Can you stump your colleagues and impress your friends?

Upon learning he had answered correctly, Sam grinned, wider than he meant to, and hid his face behind his hands. He had so expected to be wrong that it felt almost dream-like to learn he had actually been correct.

His thrill didn't last for long, though -- upon learning he had to make his own riddle his heart sunk again. Being creative quickly was not a skill he possessed. But still, he wanted to impress Jigano and he had done well before, right? So maybe it wouldn't be too bad.

After a moment's thought, Sam wrote:

'At night they appear without a sound,
Aid the townspeople in getting around,
And in the day they are lost,
But no thief is to blame for the cost.'

Well, it wasn't the smoothest rhyming, but it was the best he could do in the moment. Folding his paper once, he passed it to Amalia.

She's imperfect, but she tries

It is a pity point, but she will take it, as it is more than she expected. Amalia sticks her tongue out at Jigano, suddenly childish in the comfort of their relationship: "Of course you gave me the hard one," she replies, laughter lightening the childlike petulance, a smile crinkling her eyes.

The next challenge is significantly worse, and the baker groans audibly, dropping her chin to her hands. Words she has some skill with; subtlety she does not. Riddles are just words formed into lies, and Amalia is a creature of frank honesty and luminescence, not cut out for things that are hidden in doubt.

Only one thing pops into her mind, and she laughs, shaking her head and taking a quill before scribbling some lines and passing them to Caiside, who she does not know well enough to equate with iron, but she doubts her poem was meant for Sam.

White as snow and brown as nut,
From a foreign cloth I'm cut
Friend of cats and birds and things,
I pull poems out of strings.

Then Sam passes a note to her, and Amalia reads it over, puzzled and impressed by his quickly-thought poem. Turning to look at the bookmaker with a slight frown, she purses her lips before guessing blindly. "Street lights?"

The easy smile on Caisides face didn’t move when he learned he had been correct (of course he had been correct), but it did grow wider as Jigano explained their next task. How interesting! Caiside had never tried his hand at riddles, but a riddle was simply poetry with an easy answer. It couldn’t be hard.

After accepting the stick, and offering Isuma as many pets as he had time for, Caiside went to work, words flowing into the paper in a long, slim hand. The hardest part was fussing with the tightness of the rhyme, but finally Caiside decided it would be fine. He knew Sam’s had to be Amalia, so even though he didn’t get the connection between the bookmaker and mirrors, he knew that was who he was giving his riddle to.

Born from drab armour,
I entrench myself first,
Then upwards I burst,
Ready to share all my glamour.

With his own piece of paper held out and waiting to be taken, Caiside accepted the riddle offered by Amalia, reading over the scrawled lines she had written a few times. ”It’s yarn.” Caisides voice was confident as ever, but his uncertainty showed in the quirk of his brows, an unsaid ’Isn’t it?’ trailing off the end of his words.

Sam shook his head at Amalia's answer, though he wasn't sure how to feel about it. Happy he'd made a good puzzle, or embarrassed that it was so bad she couldn't work it out? He didn't know if he was meant to give her the correct answer so simply glanced at Jigano, silently asking him to take charge.

But he still had his own riddle to solve from Caiside. He took the paper and silently stared at the words for a while before nervously, quietly saying: "Is...is it a seed? A flower seed?"

Watching his colleagues come up with their own riddles was, admittedly, a bit of fun for him to enjoy, and as the envelopes began to be passed around the table he stood and ambled around, shamelessly snooping to see what had been written. He managed to keep his pleased humming to himself, but only barely as he made his way back to his seat, eager to hear their answers. He let them all speak in turn, smile turning solemn as he nodded at each guess and then tilted his head in wry acknowledgment.

"Sam, I believe the answer to your riddle is 'stars,' isn't it?" he asked with an apologetic smile for Amalia. "And Amalia, the answer to your riddle is... me!" He laughed, pleased and more than a little proud of his clever heart sister, even as grinned at Caiside for his good try. "Caiside, I believe your riddle was specifically a flower and not its seed." Now he did hum, thoughtful as he tried to decide whether to give the bookmaker partial credit. But... his first answer had been a seed, and no one else had gotten two guesses. Keeping that to himself for the moment he instead beamed around at his friends. "Regardless, all three riddles were well-written, especially for having so little time to come up with them! I'm impressed by each of you for your quick-thinking under pressure. You've shown your skills as individuals, and hopefully given each other a taste of your abilities. Now..."

Isuma bounded to the bowl in the center of the table, fluffing her wings proudly as she sat in it while Jigano swept a cloth from an array of items that had been set out previously. "Can you work together?" He winked at them, displaying a set of figures in metal, wood, or bone, each roughly the size of his fist, and each a single color. Lifting the Gold Dragon up he tilted it so they could see that there were words written on the bottom of it. "Use the clues to decide which totem goes where. There are seven totems, but only five bowls, so choose wisely... and in case you were wondering, the North wall is the one across the Hall from my office." He nodded towards the small table that had been set against that wall, with an empty bowl of its own. With that he sat back, grinning as Isuma hopped out of the bowl once more to go play with Jyoti while the humans went about their games.

There are four tables with small bowls set at the cardinal points (North, South, East, and West) of the room, along with the bowl in the center of the table. The items on the table and their inscriptions are as follows:

Silver gryphon
Where stars meet snow
I make my home
Silver feathers
Help keep me warm

Gold dragon
On wings of gold
I rise so high
To greet the sun
And rule the sky

Bronze unicorn
My horn of bronze
Is sharp and true
If lies you tell
I’ll run you through

Copper bear
By end of fall
I’ve done my best
I lay me down
And take a rest

Iron spire
An iron heart
Within a cage
Against my walls
You spent your rage

Wooden book
When lies are truths
And truths are lies
Solve this riddle
To gain the prize

Bone sword
The desert wind
Blows hot as blood
My sharpened edge
Turns sand to mud

No posting order or posting limit this round! You may post more than once to work together, until all the totems are placed.
