REXANNA
no one wearing a crown,
comes in the name of peace.
There is one thing Rexanna is uncertain of, and that’s where to start telling people about Zariah and her reign. She has the mind of a diplomat, has worked nearly her whole life underneath a monarch – has even been one, once upon a time. Rexanna Reyes, Queen of Halyven, Princess of Asciend, home to neither. It’s like the names she has hidden away from her past have begun to creep up again, and she wonders deep down if Calstron has stopped his search. At least she doesn’t bear a brand for that – silently thanking Frey over and over again as the days and seasons changed for the little things they had gifted her.

First, showing her that she is her own person, that her past mistakes don’t define her. Second, for removing the brand of her ex-husband, despite cursing her with it as well. But she had made up for it, had somehow managed to appease the God and receive a gift in response to it – a wonderful little piece of magic that coats every bit of her body. Perhaps they thought she’d use it to her advantage, yet she doesn’t. She doesn’t really want the attention.

She supposes she’s gone too far, now.

So she starts by the Settlement, still mulling over her thoughts of where to start. Idle conversation was always a good place to begin – then she’d be able to judge the person enough to see about tossing in a small amount of information. Now, with a rough place to start, she continues her search.

Peter has watched some of Zariah’s petitioners come and go, his eyes slipping over nearly every single one. He wasn’t sitting in on the meetings, but liked to try to imagine what they had come for, what had been spoken of behind the heavy doors. Usually, it wasn’t interesting, but then the most beautiful woman he had ever seen entered the manor, looking like she was on a mission.

It was the most interesting thing. Peter has seen so far, and so he waited until she came back out. He doesn’t know what has transpired, the oath, and the memories that had been stirred up, but he does know that she leaves looking different than most of the others. There’s a purpose to her step, and so he follows along after her, not actually approaching until they were back in the settlement. Being around people is probably a better venue for a conversation than alone on a road.

Peter comes up behind Rexanna, teaching up to tap her shoulder and her her attention, then nearly folding his hands behind his back. ”You were... wait, no, I... Hello.” Barely remembering his manners, Peter tips his head in a greeting, then barrels on with his question. ”You were at the... at the manor, weren’t you?”

REXANNA
no one wearing a crown,
comes in the name of peace.
Rexanna knows that there is a chance she is to be followed – whether to be reported back to Zariah as her whereabouts or to see if she’s doing her job. But she hasn’t expected to be followed by someone that was there at the Manor. She focuses on trying to make sure she’s doing the job she was told to do in case there’s eyes around – little birds, with eyes and voices to tell the Queen all the relative information that’s happening within the Hollowed Grounds. She spots someone, and lifts a leg prepared to step toward them to speak when suddenly there’s a touch on her shoulder from behind her.

Whirling toward the face, she doesn’t notice them immediately – her heart is racing and she watches with almost indifferent sapphire eyes as he folds his hands neatly behind his back. He begins to speak, somewhat of a statement before he seems to catch himself and says hello. Her brows furrow slightly, and she, too, tucks her hands away – her immediate instinct to reach for the fireworks beneath her skin should he pose a threat. So far, no threats. Instead he questions if she were at the Manor and Rexanna dips her head in both a greeting and confirmation.

I was, yes.” She begins, her voice silky smooth as she speaks again. “I had some business with our Queen.” She offers easily, not lying but not being terribly descriptive either. And after a moment, she wonders if he was there too, or if he simply disapproved of her going to the Manor. “Were you there?” She questions with a tilt of her head, realizing that she hasn’t introduced herself yet he hasn’t either. Let the stand off begin.

Once the woman speaks, her voice calm and even and matching the rest of her perfectly, Peter relaxes, just enough to be noticeable. His shoulders drop, and his eyes comes up to look her over again, more closely this time. He notes her stance, the way she’s mirroring his, and wonders if it’s for the same reasons. He’d always been told to keep weapons away during polite conversations.

”You’re not the same as... most of the, um... most of the others.” Peter pointed out, letting his gaze drift to the people walking by around them. ”You don’t seem... angry, or...” He trailed off, not seeming as confident with whatever he had been about to say. Of course, it could have all been a clever ruse. She wouldn’t be the first person he’d met to keep their true face hidden.

When she asked whether he’d been at the manor, Peter glanced behind him, in the direction of the imposing home. ”I was there.” He confirmed. ”I am there a lot. Will... you be around more?” Peter turned back towards her as he asked the question, his head tilting to the side. ”It would be... nice,” he nodded, ”...to have people around. More people around.”

REXANNA
no one wearing a crown,
comes in the name of peace.
It’s a pleasant surprise for Rexanna as she notices the man’s posture relaxing. The formality of it is still there for her, but now it’s different. She doesn’t perceive him as a threat, and instead he seems interested; the question initially posed was just that — a question, not an attack or idea of trying to make sure she was doing her job. But when he speaks, there’s almost a timidness to it, and her head remains slightly tilted as she allows him time to explain. She understands what he means, those around them are furious and yet Rexanna seems fine. And to all others, she is fine; it’s only internally that she’s struggling.

She offers him a wide grin and a small nod as she straightens. “Ah, yes, well they’ll come around. Just takes time, you know?” She says softly, no edge to her voice like before when he had surprised her. Before she has a chance to explain that she, too, works for the Queen now, he mentions that he was there too that day. And there’s a slight glimmer of hope she understands underneath the muttering he seems to be saying. There’s a small bell within Rexanna’s mind, where her maternal instinct lies, and it slowly begins to ring the more she looks at Peter and hears him speak.

So she smiles wide yet again and nods. “I work with our Queen now, so I’ll hazard a guess we’ll see each other more often.” She explains the best she can before her shoulders lift and lower in a slight shrug. “Courts can be stuffy without newcomers.” She adds for good measure, leaning in the tiniest bit closer as though she’s telling him a secret before she sits back and smiles. “I’m Rexanna.

The grin clearly takes Peter a little by surprise, he was used to scowling faces at worst, and fake placating smiles at best. It was such a welcome change that he nearly offered her a smile back. Something about her was familiar, without being familiar. The memory of a time of comfort, of peace, so long ago now.

”No, I um... I don’t know.” The words are accompanied by a light shrug. Peter wasn’t sure if her words were actually looking for an answer, but he didn’t want it to seem like he wasn’t paying attanetion either. ”I’ve... well, the other... other people I worked for never got to,” he gestured around them, ”this part.” Somehow, he always thought the solution to his awkwardness was more talk, and, like usual, it only served to make him feel more awkward, shifting to stand more comfortable and glance away from Rexanna.

When she mentions that she’s also working with Zariah, his curiosity outweighs his anxiety, and Peter looked back up at her again, his brows knit together. ”What kind of... things are you... are you doing for her?” Having someone else around would be nice. It wasn’t that he didn’t like being around the other members of his family, far from it actually, but it would be nice to have someone else on the same level as him.

”Rexanna.” Peter repeated back with a nod, making sure he said it exactly as she had. ”I’m Peter. Peter Launceleyn.” The name was still new enough that he was excited about it, wanted it to be out there and remembered. ”You haveum... you have magic, right? What kind?” Knowing what he did about Zariah, Rexanna would have to have some kind to be working with her.

REXANNA
no one wearing a crown,
comes in the name of peace.
Her smile surprises him, and for a moment she almost feels bad for such a surprise. What had he done before where nobody had the decency to greet him kindly? To show him the ropes and ways of common chatter, if not needing to constantly serve or be a face for someone somewhere, but where you could be yourself? He speaks and she listens attentively, allowing him to shift to be more comfortable and she relaxes her own posture as if encouraging him that he can relax. She isn’t there to smite him, isn’t there to fight or argue. A simple conversation, to get to know one another in a time where relationships were still tentative.

She responds to her initial words after the comment from Peter, sapphire gaze eyeing him softly before she turns to look at those milling about the town. “They grump and complain, then become complacent. The only time they’ll argue and be upset is behind the doors of their homes, but eventually there will be nothing out in the streets like there is now.” She offers in a way of explanation. She should know, after all. The riots of Asciend when she wed the Prince were enough of an idea how the process worked. Then, as they grew to know her and her country, the complaints grew to whispers in the streets — then idle chatter behind closed doors.

At least before everything went to hell and it rose back up.

She turns her head to look at him once more when he asks what Zariah has asked of her, and she leans in finding it within her to be able to tell him since clearly he’s working for the Queen. It’s another set of whispers, as if the rest of the town cannot know her mission. “I’m here to help spread her good name, to make this process go easier — to make them no longer act out in public, and accept our Queen.” She leans back and looks toward the other townspeople walking around. But Peter’s introduction takes her by a bit of surprise, his last name the same as Zariahs and Edrei’s and she offers him a bright smile in response.

Pleasure to meet you Peter Launceleyn.” She says, eyes drifting toward his face. “And I do have magic, yes.” She begins quietly, that same faint smile crossing her lips. “Fire, fireworks, transmutation.” She lists them off with a small shrug. “And you?

Where Rexanna turns to look at the people as they pass by, Peter keeps his eyes on her, chewing his lip as he considers what she’s said. It seems to be a topic on which she has much knowledge, and Peter finds himself wondering where it came from, how it was acquired. ”Whispering behind doors is... it can lead to..” Peter gestured, tried to summon the word to his tongue, ”...bad things, though. Can’t it?” Blue eyes stay locked to Rexanna face. He knows the answer, had been part of whispers behind doors before, but he wanted to see her response as much as hear it.

This has, with the exception of a single person, been one of the nicest conversations he’s had since coming to Caido. There is something about Rexanna that is warm, that makes him want to lean in conspiratorially as she does and play with the drama of it. He wonders what exactly she is going to be doing still, as far as he knew Zariah’s name was already on the lips of nearly everyone, for better or worse, and like Rexanna has said, people would grow complacent soon. He wanted to seem clever though, and so simply nodded, not asking any more and instead assuming she knew what she was tasked with doing.

The smile manages to draw a matching one back from Peter, though the quirk of his lips is much shyer than her bright one. The magics Rexanna list begin familiar, easy to imagine, but immediately move into the unknown for him, his head tilting again, this time in confusion. ”Transmutation is... makings things... different?” His voice is tinged with uncertainty. ”And what are fireworks?” That was the one that mystified him, the distinction between firework and fire not clear in his mind.

Peters hands come out from behind his back, wanting to answer her question with a demonstration before remembering Zariah had given him proper names for what he could do. ”I can... I have creation, and... and water.” His hands slowly lower again, this time in front of him, where Rexanna can see the way he fidgets restlessly.

REXANNA
no one wearing a crown,
comes in the name of peace.
It’s an easy chat, she finds with Peter, as he converses with her. It’s not awkward to her, and she meets his gaze back as he questions her about the whispering behind doors. A soft smile is sent his way with a small nod. “It can, unless our Queen has a means of preventing it.” She says easily. “There’s no way to stop it, but to prevent the outreach. Which is where I come in.” She adds as an extra bit of information. Once again, it’s easy; and she finds comfort in the conversation with him – of teaching and learning, perhaps he would be a good person to learn more about the Queen, though she still needs to seek out Roana for the added benefit of knowing what exactly is going on.

It shifts toward magic, though, and she glances over to Peter to see a mirrored smile on his face from her own. She finds that a smile looks wonderful on him, and that motherly instinct within her wants to make sure he has a way of always being able to smile when he wants to – yet she doesn’t know him very well still. She’ll take the small victories. Yet, his confusion tilts his head and he asks about the transmutation, and she nods with a small smile. “Exactly.” She pauses, gesturing to the clothes she wears. “For instance, the fabric was originally a scratchy material, I just changed it into more of a silk and gave it a bit of a shine.” She explains.

But when he doesn’t know what fireworks are, she grins at him. “Oh they’re wonderful, I can show you.” There’s a pause as he explains what kind of magic he has, his hands moving to his front and she eyes them interested. Creation and water, and she notices the fidgeting. “Oh I haven’t seen someone with water magic in a very long time, that’s wonderful.” She praises him with that same wide grin before an idea comes to her. “Here, follow me.” She says, dipping further into the alley toward the back of the town where it’s less populated.

These are fireworks.” She begins, hands opening palm out as she looks to the sky and summons a medium sized firework – nothing like the giant bombs she’s capable of producing. This one shoots up toward the sky about half way, red and gold sparkles, before it explodes in a small shower of glimmering hues of yellows, reds, and oranges. Then, just like that it’s gone – only thing left behind is the smoke and a small flame on a rogue tree branch that she uses her fire magic to suffocate. Turning her sapphire gaze toward Peter to see his reaction, she beams to him. “Would you like to show me yours?

The extra bit of information is appreciated, maybe more than Rexanna knows, if only because it gives Peter an actual insight as to what she will doing for their queen. It is not a job he envies, but he had never had the skill of speaking with people, had never had the chance to learn it, and at this point had no desire to.

When he is told that yes, he is correct about transmutation, the smile on Peters face grows, still shy, but warmer now. He isn’t sure why, but he wanted Rexanna to think he was clever. To think whatever it would take to make her like him. Blue eyes follow her gesture towards her clothes, Peters hands pausing for a moment before being pulled in to clutch at his own scratchy sweater. ”You... made it very pretty.” His compliment is a little clumsy, but earnest.

Before Peter let’s himself be led away, he glances around, though what exactly he’s looking around for isn’t exactly clear. It was just as likely to be a real threat as it was paranoia, but whatever it was he deemed it safe, and followed Rex is not an alley. ”I’m not... I just... just learned it, and... I’m still practicing. The um, the water.” She had seemed so excited by it, and the last thing he wanted was to disappoint her now.

Peter hadn’t had any idea what to expect from fireworks, and he was immediately blown away. Even when the sound makes him flinch back, his eyes down leave the shower of sparks and colour until it’s faded. ”That was... it was so...” Peter moved his hands, as if the nonsensical gestures will suffice for the words he doesn’t have. ”It’s... it’s almost like...” He wants to say home, but no place he’s ever called home has been as nice as this short time has been.

Despite his exuberance before, when Pet is asked to show off his own magic, he shrinks again, self conscious and nerve us, especially given what Rexanna has just done. ”It’s not... not very exciting.” Drawing a small amount of water from a nearby puddle, Peter swirled it around his hand, the water dancing around his fingers without ever actually touching him. ”It’s going to get better.” The words come out like an assurance, thiughits not clear if he’s assuring her, or himself. As he returned the water to the puddle he looked over Rexanna, chewing his lip while he did. He wanted to show off his creation with something he could give her, something  that might have some use, but he didn’t know her well enough. What ended up appearing in his hands was a bracelet, narrow and braided from silky threads in reds, yellows and oranges, with delicate silver charms strung along its length. Not the most inspired thing he’d offered to someone, but perhaps one of the prettier ones.

REXANNA
no one wearing a crown,
comes in the name of peace.
To Peter’s credit, Rexanna does think he’s clever. Clever in the way that often those overlooked the most have learned to be. And she understands, she was like that too, once. Before she was thrust upon the center of attention, put on a throne that hadn’t ever been hers, and told to pretend until it became natural. Perhaps Peter and her had a lot more than initially thought in common! But she doesn’t delve into it, not as he compliments her clothes and she smiles softly, wanting to reach out and soften his clothes too. But she doesn’t, she doesn’t know him very well and with his timid nature she doesn’t want to frighten him.

She hears the stuttering in his voice before she leads him down the alley, and her eyes crinkle with a bit of softness — she understands this too, because she hasn’t mastered any of hers either. But you couldn’t tell with the way she acts about it. “All things take time.” She offers warmly, a bright smile and a knowing nod. But before long she’s showed him her fireworks, and banished the small fire that had grown because of them. Her sapphire gaze slips to him as the reaction registers and he begins to speak. She nods understandingly, despite no true descriptions have been made. “It does.” She agrees, because back in her home there were things like it. “Almost nostalgic.” She answers, her head tilting up toward the sky briefly once more to view the small puff of remaining smoke billow in the air.

Her head eventually tilts toward him as he explains and shrinks within himself, uncertain and self conscious about it. But her smile is encouraging and she watches as he draws water from the puddle, letting it hover without ever meshing and mixing into his skin. Her brows lift and surprise takes over her face before her eyes drift toward his own face. “That is incredible, Peter!” She praises, and not only because of the fact of the control he had over it to not let it crash into his fingers, but the ability to do it in general. She’d never tried to do that with fire, to afraid of the flame singeing her pale hands to ever try it accurately. But it appears he’s not done, as he shifts his hands and puts the water back, suddenly something appears in his hand.

It’s just like her fireworks and her cheeks redden with the warmth and she offers him one of the biggest smiles yet, the kind that creases her eyes and shows the dimples in her cheeks. Gently, she takes it and inspects it further. “Oh I love this, very much! Thank you!” She says, seeing the way the light dances on the threads. Then, she slips it over her hand into her wrist before looking to Peter and his scratchy shirt. “Do you mind?” She asks quietly, waiting for the okay before she attempts to reach with both pale hands onto the hem of his shirt and let her magic flow through it. She shifts the scratchy material to something soft and warm, yet light enough to breathe with the heat that always arrives in the afternoon. When she’s finished, she steps back and smiles to him. “How does that feel?

”Nostalgic.” It was a good sounding word for the feeling in his chest. Familiar, without being close to familiar. Peter glance up, watching the plume of smoke from both the explosion and the fire fade away.

The exuberance of Rexannas reaction to his water magic brings a violent flush to peters cheeks, the redness uneven where it peeks through scars. However, it’s nothing compared to the shades he turns when she sees the bracelet he made for her. Blue eyes focus on anything but her as he tries to respond in a shaky voice. ”It’s really not... I-I, um.. you’re... you’re welcome.” He hasn’t thought it had been particularly impressive, but he was glad that it had been well received, a shy smile on Peters face despite his embarrassment.

Then she is asking if he minds, and confusion cuts through his embarrassment, Peters head cocking to the side. Though he didn’t know what she was asking after, he also though there was very little she would do that he would mind, and so shook his head. Blue eyes watched the hands on his shirt, then widened in amazement as the fabric seemed to shift before him. ”This is...” Peter began in amazement before he’d even been asked, hands smoothing over the new material. He looked up at Rexanna, a brighter smile on his face than what he’d offered before. ”It’s... it’s so nice. Thank you. Thank you.” He can’t keep his hands off the softness of the new shirt, the texture absolutely perfect. ”You didn’t have to.”

REXANNA
no one wearing a crown,
comes in the name of peace.
There was something about Peter that was simply comforting to be around. There wasn’t a kind of face she had to keep up, a mask to hide behind and be formal with. And it only reinforces the idea as he stammers with her surprise over the lovely gift. She grins to him, repaying the favor the only way she knows how, and when his fingers touch the fabric (soft and smooth and wonderful), she beams a grin to him. He thanks her multiple times and she only nods, unable to really form the words to respond.

In Rexanna’s eyes, everyone deserves to have nice things now and then. Especially those that have struggled along the most.

She watches as he can’t keep his hands from his gift, and she inspects her bracelet as she listens to him. She chuckles softly with a light shake of her head, her dark hair falling over one shoulder. “You didn’t have to make me such a wonderful gift.” She says, eyes drifting up toward his face with a tilt of her head. “I’d consider us even, then?” She attempts a joke toward him, to see how he responds to it. And she realizes that no matter how this entire courtship ends, she wants to make sure Peter’s safe from it all.

With no small amount of effort, Peter forced his hands down to his side. It wasn’t that he thought Rexanna wanted him to act in any particular way, something he expected from nearly everyone else he interacted with, but rather that he wanted to be seen in a different way. Like someone who wasn’t painfully aware when he did something strange. Not that shame kept his fingers from curling up to run at his sleeves, the silky soft fabric irresistible.

Before all the words are out of Rexannas mouth, Peter is shrugging, ready to say that it wasn’t a big deal. He’d just made something he thought she’d like. The idea came from her fireworks anyway. Her tone changes then, joking, and Peter has to think about what she’s said, his head angling to the side. He can’t say he’s certain what the joke is, but he wants to seem in the loop, so he smiles up towards her. ”Even. Sure.” He even manages a soft laugh, the noise uncertain.

A pet of him wonders if this is perhaps a dismissal, but It’s vague enough that he doesn’t feel bad for ignoring it.
