ARDUINNA

The call for Rae and for Frey to answer echoes far across the Greatwood. And whilst the gods do not hear the cry of the girl in the night, the forest does. And the forest will not stand by as a sickness takes one of its most fragile creatures.

Arduinna simply appears, hovering majestically above the water before Phoebe on wings hidden by illusion. It has been some time since she has been called like this, pulled from her glade and meadow and into action. Her fiery hair reflects the eerie light of the stars, and her molten eyes move from one face to the next - the solemn, the singers, those who would approach and help, to touch and comfort.

And she turns, the lady of the forest dressed in moss and vine and moonlight, to face the Undine. "You sing and the Greatwood hears your call," she says slowly, her voice like honeysuckle and peaches. "As do I."

Light, pure and vibrant, seems to gather at Arduinna's fingertips. Slowly and delicately, she bends to the water - and as her fingers touch to it, the whole of the Crimson Cataract blooms to life, chasing the blackness, the blight, the disease from the algae and shooting towards the Undine. Aided by unicorns, luxere, prayer and song, there is no more powerful attempt at salvation.

Phoebe has channelled Arduinna, who uses mastered healing to help in the efforts to save the Undine!
Nature, nurture heaven and home
Sum of all, and by them, driven
To conquer every mountain shown

That they offer words of comfort, melodies and shawls and touch, oh - it has been so long since she was touched, held, among anyone at all. But it is too late - her last song has begun, and the company she seeks is more than enough to see her through this darkest of nights. At least, that is the intention - and then the lady of the forest is there, aided and buffered by the guiding light of two unicorns, and the Undine's melody quivers, wavers... and stops.

Light - blinding, soothing, roaring through the water. It fills the siren with its warmth and banishes the darkness from her scales, the ink from her eyes. Eyes which see clearly for the first time in a season or more. Once the light fades her song picks up - vibrant this time, exuberant, joyous. And strong.

The combined actions of your characters have healed the Undine! Those in the water - Melita, Amalia, Peter - receive +1 END.

Please post a reaction in the next 48 hours to be included in the ending of the drop!

say it's here where our pieces fall in place
Arduinna's presence sparks fear into the core of the alchemist. Hitching in a breath, Remi tightens the arm encircling Ronin's waist as his too-pale stare focuses on the wild fae who is a smear of crimson stains in his field of vision. Heart beating wildly in his chest, Remi suddenly lets go of his partner, mumbling some apologetic sound. Though Arduinna seems entirely focused on the Undine, the alchemist won't take the chance that her attention will waiver and fall upon her once-victim. Whether or not she knows about he and Ronin is not something he is willing to risk.

Moving to the opposite side of the pool with as much dexterity and stealth as he can muster, Remi pulls softly at the tree-boughs around him. He thickens the leaves growing on them, hoping to obfuscate his appearance entirely from the wild vision-stealing witch.

His position sufficiently obscured (or so he hoped), Remi reached out with his magic once more to gently coax more lichen into existence around the Undine.

Remi uses his earth magic to hide from Arduinna >.> but also adds more lichen around the Undine.
Speaks with a thick Italian accent.
Force and magic can be used against Remi without permission.

The Harpy is surprised when it works – the melody waving and faltering, stopping entirely to be enveloped in light and healing and soothed. She approaches closer, toward the water’s edge as the Undine blinks and sees clearly – her song beginning again in strength and joy, a feeling that warms the cold bones Kiada has learned to embrace. Perhaps it helps, too, when Auni lifts his head with his glowing antlers, a gilt hue, as he dances in place – a small prance of his front feet along the water’s edge. He is happy, relieved, and aims to sing along with a quiet bray of sound.

Kiada is happy, too, for the creature and the amount of people willing to help. She looks to Amalia, standing in the water as the creature is healed, edging ever closer to hopefully be the first one the leopardess greets with success and exuberance at what they just witnessed and helped. Granted, the creature that lives within the crimson waves is healed, the blight fixed, and Kiada wonders how much of it has spread – and if it would take a combined effort to fix all of this too.

Kiada is 100% useless and goes to stand by the water’s edge while Auni keeps near the edge with the light of his antlers!

JIAO
As Arduinna appeared Jiao gasped and moved back instinctually, going to sit behind the rock she had been on when she gained control of her senses again. She had never seen many Gods, and while Arduinna wasn't quite that (she thought?) she was close enough to be terrifying.

She watched from behind the rock as Undine was recovered, the siren suddenly seeming so much more vibrant and alive. For just a second, she was annoyed she had given away her shawl, but it was hard to hold onto the bitterness when confronted with such beauty and joy. Getting a little over the fear of Arduinna (but not entirely, still glancing over at her as she moved) she leaned over the rock and with her head held in her hands, smiled and watched as the place was cleaned of blight.

Maybe their prayers had been the correct answer.

Between the unicorns and Arduinna’s appearance, the light combined into a glorious, beautiful sanction. The honeybee girl’s eyes widened as she took in the reverie, as she soaked in the sudden surge to the song. They did it, the youth thought, mystified and beholden, witnessing an abrupt shift to the Undine and her plight, as the healing nature seemed to alter, change, her spirit, her frame, her figure, “How do you feel now?” She whispered, a vivid round of tunes revolving from her lips too – not as beatific, not as grand, not as poetic and ardent, but yearning to stay amidst those soothing, assuaging resonance – something gone well this time.

It made her heart soar, to watch an alteration, a change, for the world not to fall apart in those moments.

It was an odd to witness something good happening amidst all the clamor, the din, the guilt, and the disasters. It was even stranger still to think they’d had a part in ensuring death didn’t reach the Undine today.

It didn’t fade away, like the turtle in the Spire. It didn’t burst into flame, like the flinthopper from seasons before. It didn’t fall apart, like all their other events, their trials, their tribulations. It didn’t conquer or devour their lands. It didn’t sit upon a throne and demand for their allegiance. Instead, the Stygian ochre seemed to be drawn away, from the healing throngs of the unicorns, from the sudden appearance of Arduinna, lending her powers to the storm, songs and music of glory catching the light, instead of the deep, overwhelming potency of funeral hymns, dirges, and requiems.

He lowered himself, sitting beside Zuriel as she combined powers with her brethren. You see, he could hear her murmur within their shared connection (still bizarre; still somewhat of a resistance in his mind, but she didn’t seem to care). A little bit of faith, and her matching eyes lingered on him for the merest of moments, too much wisdom, too much sagacity, before she proffered her own song into the ether, allowing it to gild into the stanzas raised with nickers and low snorts. The Reaper sighed, tangling one of his hands in the depths of her dark mane, and pondered over the realms and routes of convictions and beliefs.

the baffled king composing hallelujah
The moment of the fire-haired lady was monumentous, but more so for Remi than anyone else it seemed. Ronin’s eyes widened as the other man slipped from his grasp, enveloping himself in darkness and earth and slinking away to hide. And whilst he wanted to follow, he knew that Remi’s reasons were twofold.

Arduinna - and as he gazed up at her, using power that seemed near mythical to heal the Undine, the feeling of wonder turned cold and bitter - had blinded his lover. Had hurt him, and had done so in front of someone he cared deeply about.

So Ronin let Remi go, promising himself he would find the other man once the wild fae was gone. In the meantime, the feeling from the crowd around them was most certainly one of optimism, joy, laughter. And that, he knew, was sorely needed right now,

He had not expected Arduinna to come, but he realized afterwards that he had been too blinded by the sadness of what was happening to think clearly. The Lady of the Wood was powerful and bright, and though she was dangerous she could work miracles if she chose. He watched her with respect and awe as she bent to the water and sparked cleansing through it, and the Undine herself was healed - by the Fae, by the Unicorns, by the shared grief and support of those who had came to her call. Jiao's shawl lay across her shoulders, beautiful in the moonlight, and others had offered song and prayers. It was a testament to what could bring them together, when so much else in their world was tearing them apart, and to have it end in joy rather than sorrow had the proud bard bowing his head and sending a prayer of his own, in thanks, to the Old Gods.

His flute fell silent only until the Undine began to sing again, glorious, beautiful, enchanting in the moonlight, and with far more joy he raised the instrument to his lips and played her backup, poor shadow of her otherworldly music though it was, as he celebrated Arduinna's miracle and offered both Fae and Undine his congratulations in his own way.

Jigano offers a prayer of gratitude for Arduinna's timely arrival and celebrates Undine's healing with joyful music

BASTIEN
It seemed his sorrowful singing would not be needed for long - before Bastien could really get into his song, a woman appeared that he did not recognise; she flooded the place with light and it was transformed, from a place of death and sadness to one of light and life. He looked about, mouth agape (then forming slowly into a grin) at the scenery around them.

How wonderful! Joyfully, to the tune of Undine's song, he began to dance. When Jigano joined in with his flute Bastien's dancing only got more energetic, dances he had learnt from his family when he was young. This felt like a celebration now, which meant a party - he knew how to dance for a party.

FOR A TIME IT SEEMED TO ME,
THAT WE WERE STARLIGHT-TOUCHED.
FAILING TO REALIZE THAT WE WERE STARCROSSED,
Somehow, whatever it is they do, works – she watches as the red headed woman appears and lends her help to the unicorns and luxere, to the other healing magic that flows through the pond. And the song that once was of sorrow and the last of her life, slowly shifts into something else, into joy and happiness and jubilation. There’s a small smile that finds its way to her face as she looks at the entirety of those gathered, smiling and celebrating, when her eyes land on Bastien.

And oh, he is celebrating. She watches as he dances, and she smiles to him, watching from her standstill place, keeping her eyes on both the creature and those gathered, wondering what they were supposed to do now. Go back home, knowing they had ventured into the Greatwood without permission, to await what might be waiting for them back home?

Amalia

For my part, I know nothing with any certainty
Remarkably - miraculously - it works.

Amalia resists the urge to fall to her knees in the water, to bask in the glory of Arduinna's light. Laughter peals through the pool, and it takes her a moment to realize it is hers, delight and awe pulling joy from her lips, filling her heart with much-needed relief. How many times has she been wrong, how many lives has she failed to save? The tulmhainar, Safrin, the serpent... the list goes on and on and on. Doing her best, trying her hardest, and for what?

For this.

Amalia does not kid herself by taking credit for this miracle. It is not her piety which brought the rescue, but for the hopeful baker it does not matter. A miracle is a miracle, and the girl is relieved, delighted, thrilled to see the blight erased. Laughing, smiling, she picks up her song, Jyoti cooing and calling alongside, a whale's hymn to the beauty of life as they dance within the water, for a moment simply happy to find some speck of goodness in this world.

Phoebe
Phoebe gasps when before her a beautiful woman appears. Brown eyes follow her as she glides towards the Undine and begins to pump healing magic into the dying creature. For a moment she begins to hope, pray, that the efforts of this woman she has somehow managed to call from whatever realm she inhabits will save the blighted creature.

Suddenly there is a burst of light, and the young midwife shys from it, eyes scrunching closed as her face turns away on instinct. Pim too shields his eyes, face pressed uncomfortably against her side. But the light soon fades and the siren's song fills the air, strong and joyful. The blonde looks back to see the Undine and the surrounding waters near glowing with health and life. Tears come to her eyes, tears of happiness to be certain, and roll down her face. She looks to the woman she had called upon, hands still clasped to her chest, and dips her head respectfully. "Thank you so much for answering my prayer and saving the Undine." she says, grinning from ear to ear.

RORY
Helplessness was not new to him: Rory had, after all, watched his mother's sanity wither and weaken and finally give. He had watched some of his best friends foolishly engage a powerful monster in battle, and die, torn to shreds by its claws.

But it still burned in his chest as he saw the black lichen, the inky rot bleeding from Undine's eyes—it was a painful thing lodged in his chest, that song, a sorrow and a grief he could not put a name on. The wolf in his soul screamed and screamed and screamed and screamed, and yet he merely stood there, silent and watchful. Composed. His breathing even, his heart in shambles, because how could such beauty and such power and such sadness exist in the same breath? In the same glade? In the same water?

Then a Fae appeared, seemingly wingless, slipping into existence between one breath and the next. Rory blinked, suddenly unsure if she hadn't been there the entire time, after all, for his brain found her sudden presence disturbing to parse. She spoke to Undine and then—she set everything aglow, a cleansing light filtering away the black touch, leaving the pool a deep crimson, and Undine...

It cleared her scales of the taint, brushed the darkness from her eyes, and she glowed in the starlight—radiant, otherworldly, a beauty that rivaled the waterfall behind her. It seemed to be the only sound in the silence, her last song ended in wonder, a subtle roar that ate the sound of his own heart in his ears.

Then—a song to rival (something I forgot or never knew).

The scream inside of him didn't die. It grew uselessly in his chest until he thought his ribs would burst, a fierce, volatile mixture of joy, hope, anger, envy.

He had nothing to give. He had never had anything to give.

He sighed, barely perceptible, and let his eyes ride her song back to the top of the waterfall, where he could pretend that things were different.

[ As usual, something happened partway through a post and I lost the entire mood, so excuse the shitty wrap to this. Rory stares at a waterfall. ]
