It sounded like a bad joke - one that Ronin had read in a book when he was younger. It involved an "adventurer's guild" and a "level 1 quest" and "rat catching".

But when the notice came in that there was a large and nasty pack of ROUS hunting the Underground, it wasn't as though Ronin could say no, was it? Besides, rumours said that the rats had already made off with a few goats and sheep that had gotten too close, so it was only a matter of time before a hapless wanderer fell foul of them.

So he had put out some feelers for any available monster hunters (or anyone else who might wish to help) to meet him at the underground at sunset. Why sunset? Because he had a daughter who finally slept through the night, that was why. And if they were underground, they hardly needed it to be daylight.

Holding a flickering torch aloft and with Sugar perched on his shoulder, Ronin waited for his crew.

Welcome to another monster hunting PQ <3 This will involve die rolls and your character might get hurt! No lasting damage or death though (unless you want to, in which case hit me up).

He had offered to help Ronin and the Monster Hunter's Guild out, and he meant to stand by his word. The fact that it would also let him do a bit more research into the Underground and ROUSes was a personal bonus, of course, and one he didn't mind admitting to. That it took place at sunset instead of dawn only made it more appealing to the bard, who often stayed up late and slept in late, too, if he was given his preference in the matter.

He arrived on time, hair and skin washed of the dyes that had been used to disguise them in these troubled times and pale mane plaited back neatly and out of the way. Isuma perched on his shoulder, eagerly hoping to catch sight of her white-scaled friend, and he had his rapier at his hip, though he hoped to be wielding his pen and journal and letting the Hunters do most of the fighting. That didn't stop him from bringing a sturdy net, however, and his bag of first aid supplies slung over his unoccupied shoulder in case of accidents. He held a lantern in one hand, an unusual construction with a white flame that burned without apparent fuel in its center.

"Loreseeker's representative, reporting for duty," he informed Ronin with a grin and a small bow as he stepped up, and Isuma reep!ed an enthusiastic greeting of her own for Sugar. The bard's smile turned a little crooked as he glanced down into the dark, a silver brow arching at the star-touched man. "That, and I didn't want to risk any of Rory's goats falling prey to the pack. What's the plan, Guildmaster?"

Emmett
Hunting some rats in the Underground sounded like a fantastic way to get some stress out of his system to Emmett. With everything that was going on, he wanted nothing more than to go and scream and kick. And while he'd have to be a bit more dignified than that, the task would let him hit a few rats, hopefully.

He showed up the underground with his axe in his hand, the tool having quickly become his weapon of choice. His fingers had worn pressure points into the handle where it bended to his hands shape, and the weight of it just felt good. "Hey, Ronin." Emmett greeted, nodding at the guildmaster. "What is it we're goin' up against this time?"

Roana frankly didn’t care what they were hunting. If Ronin needed help, she would be there. Rats in the underground shouldn’t be nearly so bad as the banshee even, so why not? It would be a good way to let off some pent up steam. Nothing called the nerves quite the same was as slashing a monster to bits. And besides – rats of any sort were gross.

But as she arrived, she had to resist the urge to sigh. First she saw Emmett, who had recently dumped her sister-in-law, and that was some drama she just didn’t want to deal with. Then there was another fellow she frankly didn’t recognize, but anyone she didn’t know she assumed hated her based on recent events. It seemed Ronin would be the only decent company, and she was actually rather content with that. ”Steadman, reporting for duty, Guildmaster, sir.” she said with a salute and cheeky grin Ronin’s way.

DEIMOS
Delivered from the blasts
Hunting down monsters sounded exactly like the right venue to vent out frustrations, practice precision, and finally, finally, be able to make some sort of impact effectively.

Because that was what he craved, beyond the realm of constant, impending death – to be better, to be faster, to be stronger than his current state, fighting onslaught after onslaught, terror after terror, anarchy building and billowing and striving to be unleashed. To be the bulwark, the bastion, the port in the storm instead of the careening waves, instead of the loose pieces floating and struggling to get to the surface.

He sighed and prepared, grabbing hold of his weapons: daggers, a couple throwing knives not lost in the Spire’s haze, and his sword – and then left the rest of the possibilities to impending creation magic. The newest addition would be Zuriel, however; something soothing, assuaging, easing the sensation of apprehension away from his chest. He wished it’d leave – but with all the trials and tribulations, the flickering, barbaric memories, it was likely going to be there, in the back of his mind, for a lengthy interval.

Their arrival was heralded with several nods to those he knew: Ronin, Jigano, Roana, and the youth who’d spoke up during the recent forum with Zariah. The unicorn settled behind him, quiet and hushed, and they merely awaited the instructions: the potential for successful vehemence.

They arrived, as Ronin had known they would, and he smiled at the group as they assembled before him. A good mix of skills, in reality - magic, shapeshifting and a warrior's talents combined; plus, Jigano's first aid kit and plethora of knowledge would be essential, too. "The plan," he said with a smile, "is to head into that dark hole behind us and to bait out some ROUS. There's tell of a large pack of them running around, and they're particularly vicious."

Shrugging off the pack he had been carrying, he let it drop to the ground with a thump. Within, wrapped in wax paper, the group would already be able to see - and smell - the bait he planned to use. Offal, leftover from a butcher's. Delicious.

From his back pocket he drew out a folded square of paper, crouching down that he might show it to them flat on the ground by the light of his torch. On it was a rough and ready sketch of a ROUS - the blind, overlarge rodent a grotesquerie even on paper. Next to it was a quick map through the underground, obviously taken from a much larger and more detailed piece.

"Some of us will need to stand lookout, in case the bait draws them out quick. The rest... well, I'm afraid you'll have to get your hands dirty."

So saying, Ronin carried the bag of bait with him deep down into the underground, motioning for the group to follow. And, always one to practice what he preached, the guildmaster was the first one to dip into the bag for some offal, that he might deposit it at one of the branches off into the underground.

Do you put bait out for the ROUS? Or do you stand watch?

Was it wise to bait monsters? Probably not – but the Reaper paid no heed to it. Perhaps he should’ve. Perhaps he should’ve taken every ounce of anything and everything he’d learned from these parts, but there was a certain need to refine himself, to recall strength, to remember brutality, in the face of anything – even ROUS. There was savagery in his arms, in his lungs, in his heart, in his soul, so why not give it a chance to express itself, to grow in the swell of butchery and victory?

He watched and listened – to the offal, which, due to his background along battlefields and medic tents, he didn’t even mind overly much, to the sketch and outline of the disturbing rodent they’d be hunting down, and the map, the expansive underground of which he’d really only ever noted the entrance.

But he didn’t mind having his hands dirty. They’d been contorted and covered with blood for several lifetimes. This one wasn’t going to change anything. The warrior followed Ronin, only pausing to arch a brow at Jigano, an audacious dare because he could, before plunging his hands into the bag as well. He did much the same as the leader, coating the lure along an offshoot – perhaps one with a dead end – so that they might have a better means of trapping the aforementioned creatures.

The lorekeeper smiled a friendly greeting to Emmett , a young man he had seen from afar but had never been properly introduced to. "Jigano," he murmured with a nod of his head. "Nice to meet you, sir." Young though he was, he had earned the bard's respect by speaking out against Zariah. He drew breath to say more, but the third addition to the hunting party had him holding his silence, eyes going hard as he looked over the woman whose pack had threatened his lover. There were bigger fish to fry at the moment, so he held his peace, but he felt palpable relief when Deimos arrived, and the bard quirked a small smile at his big friend. He held up the net, arching a brow in quiet, sheepish admission that he had gotten the idea from the mage and their ill-fated descent into the Spire.

Bait and kill? It sounded simple but effective, though the confusion of the Underground's many side tunnels might throw them off a bit. Jigano tilted his head curiously as Ronin unslung the bag from his shoulder, and his nose wrinkled up as the smell of the offal hit. Not that it was an unpleasant smell... or at least, while he might not trust his human gut to handle it, the stuff would be far more interesting in some of his other forms. He grinned at their fearless leader as he showed them the drawing, nodding his agreement to the plan.

"I'll stand guard," he offered as they headed down into the dark, dropping to the back of the group and lifting his lantern high so they would have light at both ends of their procession. It let him subtly adjust his eyes and ears to his foxier senses, without having an audience behind him for the shifts. He kept alert for the sounds of skittering around or behind them as they made their way deeper into the world below.

It seemed one more was to join them, and she nodded to the big fellow in greeting, unsure if she had ever met him before. In silence, she listened to Ronin’s description of the monsters they were hunting and explained his plan – smelly bait and all. A simple enough task, she though, even if it was a smelly one. So, either bait or stand guard was it? The larger fellow started forward, following Ronin and the white haired man decided he would stand guard. Always wanting to prove that women could pull their share of the weight, even when it wasn’t pretty, she too stepped forward.

”I’ll help with the bait.” she said, falling in line with Ronin and the bigger fellow. Internally she scolded herself for choosing the task that kept her closest to Ronin. This was a practice in self-torture apparently. But she tried to tell herself that this had nothing to do with being close to Ronin – it was completely and utterly a decision made to prove a point as the sole female of the group. Absolute. No ulterior reasons at all.

Emmett
Frankly, Emmett had never thought ROUS's existed. But Ronin had given them instructions, and he respected the captain enough to follow him into the caves just to see if there was anything there. This was the kind of place where it felt like monsters could exist, so he was sure they could still find something.

Ronin brought out bags of offal; Emmett was no stranger to disgusting sights and smells in his line of work, but even he wrinkled up his nose at the scent. Still, he was not afraid to plunge a hand in - though it appeared a lot of the others weren't either. Trying to even up the numbers, he stood opposite Jigano. "I'll help keep a look out too, for now."

Ronin was frankly surprised to have so many eager hands digging into his bag of entrails (ew), but he nodded to Jigano and Emmett in thanks as they assured the rest of the group that they would stand guard. Luckily, the offal meant that they could hopefully draw the vermin to them, so there was no need to go too far into the underground and risk getting lost.

Almost as soon as they were finished, a skittering noise sounded from deep within the pathways of the underground. Tiny little claws scrabbling, noses sniffing... a pack on the move. They came from the direction that Emmett had been standing in - a tide of black and brown rodents, some almost the size of a raccoon.

And they were strong, their claws biting into the stone such that some of those at the front of the pack could scale it entirely, hoping to drop from the ceiling down onto their prey. Screeching at the group, they fully intended to envelop the hunters completely, needing no sight to sniff out warm blood in the dark.

Ronin hissed a curse and grabbed up his torch, fully intending to swipe at any of the rodents that got close.

Uh oh, here are the ROUS! What do you do!?

Emmett
Emmett looked about as the sound of skittering feet began all around them, holding out his axe before him defensively. As they came, huge, grotesque creatures, he swung and caught one in the side, but quickly realised he was going to be overwhelmed. He took a step back, then another, then ran to join the rest of the crew.

But before he could make it to Ronin, rats had blocked his path - in a panic, Emmett ducked into a side passage, trying to hide so the rats would run past him and he could then jump in behind and get a surprise attack. Perhaps it wasn't the most dignified plan, but he could tell the creatures could rip his skin with one good hit.

The bait was effective: no sooner had the smell of blood contorted along the routes and pathways, then there was the skittering noise of clawed feet, sketching their way down marble and stone. He inhaled, drew a breath, listening as the screeches grew louder and louder, looking for the outlines, the silhouettes, in Ronin’s torch. Instinctively, his hand drew his sword out of its scabbard, glistening metallic schisms and catalysts against the firelight, waiting for his opportunity.

Zuriel, for her part, was no slouch – the depths of her eyes scanning along the darkened portal, reaching out to the warrior’s mind when one came near. Deimos reacted instantly, military mind, abhorrent aggression, aiming to slice at one approaching from the ground to his right, the keen, belligerent edges of the weapon intending to lacerate, decimate, in quick, swift accord. Another decided to try and assault from behind, and was given the same regard – intending for vehement accuracy and meticulousness in his advances, in his anarchy, in his sedition.

This really was rather disgusting work, but what bothered her more was realizing she had dealt with more disgusting tasks during her time in the military. Fortunately for her, her nose was quick to cut out the overwhelming scent of the offal, being similar enough to that of a battlefield that she simply stopped sensing it.

But then her ears picked up on the skittering. Lots and lots of skittering. Fabulous.

Fiery blue eyes locked on the pack of Rous running towards them. Her brows furrow into a glare and she is quick to draw her sword, aware the blood on her hands would draw them to her more quickly. With Krosis she slashes at the oncoming horde, hoping the added length of the claymore will result in more than one kill of the monster rodents.
