bleed it dry, leave us here with nothing
Some things just could not be killed. It was one of the great facts of life, and one that Ronin knew well, ironically, given the fact that he had come back from death. But of all the creatures roaming the Hollowed Grounds, there was one that he had never taken on. One he had no intention of taking on.

All one could do with a land shark, he had learned, was watch its movements and mitigate from there. The mark had come in from a concerned farmer whose livestock were going missing at an alarming rate, and from the ripples across the grasslands at night, it wasn't hard to figure out why.

Ronin had gone alone because, he had learned, the lighter your foot, the less likely you were to be eaten. He'd taken a few poles with tips painted black, too, and was busy marking out the areas that were likely to be dangerous. Astral projection was a definite helper for this, too, so it would seem to any passers by that there were two Ronins out there, hard at work.

Ronin wasn’t the only one who had heard about this landshark terrorizing the farmers of the Hollowed Grounds. In an effort to see just what this Queen of theirs was made of, a few concerned civilians had visited Zariah at the Manor and asked that she do something about the terrifying creature. Were it anything other than something so blatantly dangerous, she probably would have handed the task off to someone else. As it was, she figured this a task better handled herself.

As she approached the area, dressed in her training gear, she happened to spot two Ronin’s running about. She remained quiet for a moment, watching them go about, shoving poles into the ground. ”Making a mural, Ronin?” she finally called out when she was in speaking distance, eyes scanning the ground for any sign of the beast, her magic at the ready at her fingertips.

It was testament to the training Ronin had been doing with his astral projection that his other self kept right on exploring even as the real hunter paused at the noise, pole in hand. His brow furrowed and his head whipped up, worried that any noise might attract the creature he was trying purposely to stay away from. In fact, it was that caution and that alone that prevented him from acting... rashly, perhaps.

Because as his eyes fell upon the Queen of the Hollowed Grounds a strange, prickling heat rippled through his body, and his astral form stopped to stare at Zariah as well. A dark, nasty little voice that lived deep inside him suggested that perhaps they go for a stroll to find this land shark. Perhaps only he returned, even.

He swallowed that down quickly.

"Keep your voice down, please," he whispered once they were close enough, glancing over his shoulder to watch the grasses shift and sway. The wind? Maybe. Maybe not.

Zariah glanced between Ronin and Astral-Projection-Ronin. Interesting. It reminded her of the dopplegangers she used to be able to make in Northaven. Alas, she had yet to figure out how to duplicate that ability here. But soon enough both stopped to stare at her when she finally spoke up. Clearly, as she was most places these days, she was a very welcome guest.

Yes, that was sarcasm.

Zariah raised a brow at Ronin's words. Be quiet? Eyes glanced toward the grasses as they swayed. "Is not the point to draw it out to do away with it?" she asked, but per his request at a much lower volume.

Ronin could only furrow his brow at Zariah, straightening up enough to fold his arms across his chest. When he spoke his voice was still hushed, but he was obviously trying to consider her purpose out here in the Outskirts. "No," he murmured softly. "You don't draw it out - if you've done enough to draw it out, it's probably eating you." He shook his head, carefully sliding another pole into the ground and warily eyeing the grasses behind him.

He could see, in the distance, a lone deer feeding upon them, Ronin hissing a breath in through his teeth. The creature must have wandered out whilst he'd been talking with Zariah. "We should move," he said, already putting some careful distance between himself and the stake in the ground.

Hm. Well then. Apparently this was a bigger deal than she had taken it for. She merely raised a brow but nodded, remaining silent. Clearly drawing it out wasn’t the purpose, nor was she terribly concerned with the purpose of the stakes anymore. They might not be particularly close, but Ronin was the Guildmaster of the Monster Hunters Guild. If anyone knew how to hunt a Land Shark, it’d be him.

As soon as he spoke she followed suit, walking quickly away from the stake in the ground with feather-light steps. Her eyes stayed focus on the site though, glancing between the post, the deer, and the ground. Her magic was pulsing, waiting to be cast at a moment’s notice in anticipation of the Land Shark suddenly leaping up from the ground to snatch up the deer.

Ronin, on the other hand, walked with a purpose but without any intention of hunting the Land Shark. How one was meant to hunt something that stayed below the ground and reacted to the vibrations of footsteps was beyond him. The larger the group he brought, the more likely it would be that they would all get eaten. The stakes in the ground were simply to warn people where the shark was hunting and last seen.

And oh, they would most definitely see it. Ronin winced at the sound of the earth tearing, gazing over his shoulder as a dark shape with a maw full of teeth surged up from the grasses. The deer made a brief bleat of surprise and horror, a sound which was promptly cut off as the shark snatched it up and burrowed deep, deep back beneath the ground.

It wasn’t very often that Zariah was impressed by things that were intended to be powerful or terrifying thanks to her upbringing. She had grown around terrifying things, doing terrifying things, all in the name of immeasurable power. But to see a beast the size of the Land Shark suddenly rise up from the depths of the earth to swallow a deer whole before diving back to its lairs did give her pause, eyes widening slightly.

Well. No wonder people were all in a tizzy about it.

Already a plan was forming in her mind, ways they could trick the beast into a trap where they would have the advantage. She glanced over at Ronin, wondering if he would be up for it. ”If we work together this should be a painless hunt.” she said to him in a hushed tone. ”If you place that illusion of yourself in the field, I can draw it up with a lightning strike. It will give chase to illusion you and I will attack with lightning and life drain. Repeat until dead.” she whispered, raising a brow at him. ”Work for you, Captain?”

Ronin was smart enough to be in awe of the land shark as it appeared, snatched its prey and delved deep back beneath the earth, and he was standing stock still, trying not to shift his feet upon the ground as Zariah spoke. Perhaps it was reckless of him to laugh at the prospect of them taking it on, but laugh he did, obviously assuming that the Merciless was joking.

"Absolutely not," he said, shaking his head. "You have seen that thing. It lives in the earth - lightning may not even work against it. I don't even know what it is made of. We would need a team of hunters and a lot of research even to get close. Besides, it has fed - it probably won't be back up for some time." And much as he knew a lot of people would thank him for it, he wasn't letting Zariah go after that thing alone.

Zariah merely raised a brow as he laughed. Was it really that funny? She had been serious, but alright. Her eyes glanced towards the field again, thinking perhaps she might take it on herself since Ronin was clearly too much of a baby to try - some Monster Hunter he was. But it probably was foolish to attempt to kill such a beast on her own. A shame

Her hazel eyes glanced back at Ronin as he spoke. For a moment she didn't react all. But then the shrugged and turned around. "Alright. If you're too afraid to help go after it I suppose there is no point in trying to end it now." she said, starting to walk away.

Zariah undoubtedly thought she would get a rise out of him - but Ronin had been Captain of the guard she was a soldier in, and he knew better than to pick a fight with something they could not beat. And they could not beat the Land Shark, at least not right now. Her plan was good, but not without its flaws, and he wouldn't risk himself (or her, strangely enough) on an idea.

"You say afraid, I say wise," he reasoned with a shrug, allowing her to walk away. "By all means, return with those you think may be able to help you. The flags are still in the ground, to let you know where is safe and where isn't. But at least you survived tonight."

So saying, Ronin turned away again to return to his work, breath silent, footsteps careful.
