He appreciated the occasional comfort Jigano tried to offer, responding by squeezing his fingers lightly. And honestly, he appreciated the atmosphere down there—it was hard and repetitive work, but they all seemed to be in good spirits, working towards a common goal. It was... an odd sort of camaraderie, one he had not experienced in a long time, and he was content. He did not need much more.

The confession from Deimos was not surprising, though Rory didn't quite know how to respond to it. I figured as much seemed a bit on the nose, so he ended up merely grunting in acknowledgment before focusing on his lumber once more.

But soon Deimos called for aid in fixing the beams in place, and with Jigano playfully leaving that duty for someone else, Rory figured he might as well step in. "I might as well," he said, rather quiet, taking a moment to study Remi's 3D sketch. Once he felt fairly confident he knew what he was trying to help Deimos build he went over to the larger man, helping him nail the support beams into shape and place.

The ground above where the men are tunnelling gives an organic rumble of displeasure. The hammering dislodges significant portions of soil from above that block the forward progress, and indeed eat up some of the progress that has already been made.

Bad luck, or poor architectural decisions? If only you knew.

There was something entirely cathartic about having his hands in the dirt. Remi didn't mind at all the soil staining the knees of his pants, the way grime was accumulating faster and faster, or how with every errant swipe of a curl, smears of black were distributed in abstract patterns across his face. Weary as he was, when he lost his focus in the earth he thought he could perhaps dig forever.

Until of course a waterfall of 'ceiling' fell before him, entirely halting his process.

Scampering backwards and shaking earthen debris from his curls, Remi glanced over his shoulder towards Deimos with an uncertain frown. Standing and stretching his arms up to feel for the ceiling, he closed his eyes slightly as magic seeped through his fingers. "I...could make an arch-way of stone above the soil. Or below it, I suppose." No. Wait. That was precisely the point of the support beams. Shaking his head and rubbing an ear onto his shoulder that both deposited dirt and then merely smeared it around, Remi shook his head wearily.

"Or...should we just increase the number of supports, then?"

So they dug and dug, comfortable and composed with one another, naught provoked, kindled, or incensed, steady essences and craniums, nailed and supported, postured up beams and strived to make headway.

Until there wasn’t any to be had – the makeshift ceiling taking umbrage at their attempts to solidify it – the soil descending, down down down into the portions they’d already cleared. Some flickered down upon Remi and he advanced, “You all right?" echoing from his lungs (because there was no damn way anyone was coming to harm in his stead, there had already been enough hurt and upheaval amidst other events, the trials, the tribulations, crownings and echoes of the anguish scattered amongst clearings). When the alchemist managed to retreat from the debris mostly unscathed, the Reaper allowed a small sigh from his chest, eyes reviewing the damage.

It was truly their first setback. He shouldn’t have been disappointed or cross; forcing the ire down into his soul, for a later venture, for the purpose beyond this one. He tilted his head at Remi as he proffered several solutions – though he preferred the latter for now. “We can attempt to put in more supports,” he nodded, arms folded across his chest as he surveyed, studied, and calculated. “If that is not effective, we can try the arches.” He mused again, staring back over the state of their errors once more. Had it been the nailing? Had it been simply too much loose soil, impacted by their movements and motions? Or were they instigating a lost cause, and the further they went, the worse it would become?

The beast went back over to the lumber, grabbing hold of a few more to place underneath before they strived for the top structure. “If two of you could dig out the dirt again, carefully, then perhaps the other can grab some more beams? We can put them underneath and see if that will stabilize it.”

"Fine, yes. Thank you." Remi murmured, swiping a dirty hand across his eyes and only furthering the appearance of being some sort of dirt-bandit.

Reaching for the soil with his magics, Remi began to move it without his hands this time, wondering if perhaps magical-might would help keep the area more secure. Like Deimos, the alchemist wasn't clear at all about what had caused the minor tremor, and so didn't know how to avoid it. More supports seemed like a safe bet though.

Rory had been outside emptying his bucket when the small collapse happened; he came inside to find Deimos looking worriedly at Remi, who was brushing earth from his hair and shoulders. Rory's blue eyes skipped between them and Jigano, "what happened?" he asked as he hurried back to the tunnel's entrance.

They were talking about more beams, though, and Rory looked at the diminishing pile of pre-cut supports. His arms and shoulders were aching from all the work they had already done today, and he figured that running out of prepared support beams would provide a natural break soon enough. They had enough raw material to make lots of new ones, but Rory wasn't sure how much longer they should keep going.

Anyway, Remi harnessed his magic to begin to sweep out the tunnel. Rory watched for a moment, remembering how he had manipulated the frozen ground to make room for the Spark Bird's perch, then he went back to the supports, grabbing some and beginning to haul them in after Deimos, ready to help brace the tunnel.

The bard had just stepped back into the tunnel with an empty bucket when the collapse happened, and he quickly hopped back out again to give Remi room to retreat. He had been growing tired, his body aching protest with every scoop of the shovel as they worked and worked and worked, and now this newest setback had him contemplating the tunnel with frustration that had more to do with physical discomfort than a belief that it wasn't working.

He gave Rory a lopsided smile as the hunter hurried back in, gesturing to show they were all unharmed. "Small collapse, but we're all okay." Both Remi's and Deimos's ideas sounded good. Anything that would result in more support, really, would be helpful. Neither of which Jigano was going to be particularly helpful with. That meant back to the digging, made all the more unpleasant by having to dig through an area they had already cleared once before. With a sigh and a puff of air to blow a strand of increasingly muddy hair back he stepped forward to assist Remi with his shovel and bucket, figuring that every little bit helped.

Send a heartbeat to the void that cries through you
Relive the pictures that have come to pass
While it wasn’t miraculous, after all their efforts, the dirt, earth, and loam managed to hold. It was a welcome relief – the warrior didn’t concealing his sigh this time, wiping a cloth over his brow, and eyes roaming back over the crew. They all seemed fairly worn, fatigued, and drawn. This would be a decent spot to end for the day. They’d managed to create a door, place in supports, and dig a fair amount before succumbing to the elements, and their own endurance. “Well done, everyone.” The smallest of smiles tugged on his lips, gesturing to each of them in turn. “This seems like an opportune time to get some rest. Thank you to all of you for your assistance. Come back tomorrow if you wish.” There was a wry smirk on the finale of the intonations; he wouldn’t blame them for not returning the following day – the labor was intensive, and the means and measures still might not be successful after everything was said and done. His gaze ghosted back to the supports in place. “I will bring in more timber. We may need more than I originally planned.” The length of his stare fizzled along Jigano, Remi, and Rory, grateful for their presence; he’d be incapable of doing any of this alone. “I wonder if there is a way we could work at a faster, more efficient pace. Something to mull over,” and he shrugged, speculations and calculations already forming, despite the tired lines already pulsing and pervading elsewhere on his form. And with that, he allowed them the opportunity to flee the basement and all its wares behind.

--

He rose fairly early the following morning, intending to get a head start on the proceedings. The longer beams behind his house, meant for additional improvements on his residence, would have to be cut, and he spent several hours in the blooming dawn measuring and hacking. Before long, he had an ample pile to work with for the day’s beckoning tunnel. The beast spent a majority of his time bringing them to the bakery, loading them onto a cart that he dragged over himself (Zuriel was far too proud and majestic to do physical labor), back and forth, back and forth, so by the crest of the sun whittling itself over leaves and ether, the stack had been relocated into the lantern-lit stones of the basement.

His fortitude, conviction, and brute nature kept him going; granted enough time to sneak up the stairs and grab some scones already cooling from Amalia, placing them on the table for future sustenance. Water was in abundance as well, pitcher and glasses ready for the taking.

Thankfully, as the others soon arrived, he could begin directions for the next wave. It would sound repetitive and redundant, unfortunately, such was the nature of their valiant work. “I would like to put new braces and supports about every six feet. We could start the same process as yesterday – some to dig, some to cut,” his hands opened in a gesture towards the new quantity of timber. “Unless anyone has other ideas.” Then he grabbed hold of a shovel, eager and fervent to return to where they’d left off – the support beams still in place, the earth still held together and upright.

Home again, home again. Two weary men returned to the farm to help each other clean up (nobody wanted to sleep with mud in their hair) and one of their quietly content nights when they moved about the kitchen, preparing a meal together. Afterwards the bard offered to rub Rory's shoulders, in exchange for the hunter brushing his hair afterwards, and they both fell into bed early, worn out from the day's hard labor.

The morning came too soon for Jigano, who rose aching and bleary-eyed, not feeling human again until he'd gone through a series of careful stretches he more commonly used for performance days. At least he was awake enough to help Rory with the morning farm chores, seeing the animals fed and watered for the day before they headed out, and leaving Isuma behind to keep an eye on things. She wasn't the fierce guardian that Ella and Vaya were, but she could come fetch the humans if there was trouble.

Hair braided tightly back, Jigano nodded to Deimos and Remi, imperfectly hiding a yawn - and a groan - as he rested his temple for a final moment against Rory's before pulling his gloves back on and headed for his damnable trusty shovel.

Hi ho, hi ho, it's off to work they go.

Looking slightly more rested but still weary, Remi appeared bright-eyed and bushy-tailed. He thought he'd need a few nights of rest to be fully recuperated from their efforts, but at least his stores of magical stamina had been replenished if nothing else.

"I am not sure if it was the percussion of the nails that caused things to be unsteady yesterday...but I could simply insert the nails into the boards if you like." This was not said with much confidence, as Remi wasn't entirely sure that the hammering had been a problem at all, but it was worth a mention. Or at least Ronin had thought it was.

Given his magic, it still seemed most efficient for the alchemist to move earth from inside the tunnel back outside. He could move large quantities without spilling all over the bakery, and to anyone watching, it would simply appear as though he was helping Amalia garden.

Rory, despite being used to hard work, was sore and aching the following morning. It took him longer than usual to get out of bed and into clothes, but once fed and slightly warmed up he began to feel better. A walk into town helped get the circulation going, and once in the basement he almost felt okay. He stretched a couple of times, watching their fledgling tunnel with contemplation.

"We could try that, at least," he said in response to Remi's suggestion, eyes flickering to Deimos. The tunnel might be a joint effort and intended to be used by their rebellion, but Deimos was the project leader and, ultimately, it felt like his call. He was, after all, the tunnel expert.

Seeing Remi enter the tunnel to sweep it out with his magic again Rory returned to the replenished stock of lumber. "You've been busy," he commented dryly to the working Deimos, before resuming yesterday's task of cutting the wood into the correct shape and length for the support beams.

His eyes flickered back and forth between them as they arrived, mouth and teeth busy with a pumpkin scone, pondering if he should’ve given them another day’s rest. The work was hard, and they were vigilant, but he was apprehensive of sudden movements, shifts in earth, and if their minds, their forms, weren’t sharp, then it could spell disaster. Once he’d finished, nodded his greetings, his attention lingered back to Remi – pondering if not the nails themselves, but the hammering, the brutal force behind the impacts, had been enough to tear and uproot loam. He took a moment to consider it, and couldn’t find any fault or reason to disregard the measures. “Worth a shot. I would rather not have to redo our work.”

So he turned to start again, shovel in hand, but Remi had already begun his ministrations and invocations, leaving Deimos to ponder the lengths of earth magic and how useful it must be – life drain had no efficiency here, and his creation magic had been put to use elsewhere. At the very least, it gave him time to rest the juncture and sanction of his muscles already put to use, the smallest of smiles tucked in the corner of his lips when Rory remarked upon his pile and continued preparing the rest. He grabbed hold of several blocks of timber, so when Remi had finished opening up a larger amount of space, and it looked to be time to put in more support, he had the beams ready.

The warrior extended his hand out to Remi, a brief, shining, gilded glow in the palm, extending the nails to him. His stare glanced over to Jigano, a request in his vocals. “Help me hold these, while Remi puts in the nails?” He lifted one board, intending to keep it still, sure, certain, and solid.

Hours pass and the tunnelling progresses extremely well.

The path winds downwards, meanders, and finally, finally the group can begin to dig upwards...
