REXANNA
they said you were the crooked kind
She had been locked into a cage, told to marry off and bear children and keep Bastien on the side, been told to play the happy little wife again and untrusted to the point she felt like she was guarded in a tower of the manor like a helpless defenseless princess. Ah, but Rexanna wasn’t one of those anymore, no. She wasn’t defenseless, and she had asked those guarding her room to use the bathroom — a plan in motion. That was the time to strike under the cover of the night, using her fireworks to break through the window and escape, darting off into the night.

There were many revelations that Rexanna had to come to terms with. And now that she has, she’s rushed home – grabbed Bastien, and immediately made him take her to the Voice. She isn’t sure how much time she has, though really timing can be irrelevant. She wants to speak to the Voice, to do whatever it would take to change her. She finds deep down she wishes to be a weapon and no longer a pawn. She doesn’t want to be threatened and helpless in the face of the monarchy’s demands any longer. This is the only way she knows how, the only way she can embrace it with the information from Bastien, Lucas, and Wessex.

She thinks she’s ready.

She keeps her hand in Bastien’s as she reaches the Shrine first – her eyes flitting over it with interest and intrigue. “We ask to speak to the Voice, if she is there… ” She says, her voice shaking ever so slightly. She hasn’t told Bastien the change in her decision, she doesn’t know how to yet. She squeezes his hand lightly, using him to steady her as her sapphire gaze lingers on the stone – hoping someone might appear, something, anything. She can’t even look at Bastien, but she hopes his presence will help the deity appear – knowing that her status as a magic user has constantly left her ignored by the gods.

BASTIEN
i am the remedy to your heart,
Bastien had been surprised with the speed, almost panic with which Rexanna came to him, having apparently made her decision; but he had asked if she was sure and seen the determination in her eyes. He didn't have to ask again. If Rexanna wanted to go to the shrine right now, he would go with her.

Approaching the shrine amidst the books all around them, he squeezed her hand. Now that they were actually here, he felt sickly nerves among his excitement. What if this was all some kind of trick? What if it went wrong? What if, what if? While he believed in The Voice, was confident in his choices and Rexannas, it was hard to hide his anxiousness.

She spoke, and he nodded. "Yes, brillante madre. I have brought Rexanna to you, as we discussed, for you to help her become like myself."

the Voice
"Always, my sweet child. I am always there, when you truly need it." The black orb tucked within the shrine would seem to spark and fizz at the sound of Rexanna's voice. And, as Bastien joined her the goddess would step forth, static and ethereal but still very much there. "Is that so?" she repeated, her brilliant eyes like dozens of gems in the twilight as she gazed between the two.

"Speak then, Abandoned one. Tell me true - would you like to become bright?" She spread her hands imploringly - an offer that Bastien would already know the answer to. Should Rexanna say the word, the Voice would do the rest.

REXANNA
they said you were the crooked kind
She appears with far more pomp than Rexanna is expecting, and she releases a breath (shakily, admittedly, despite Bastien standing beside her). Already she feels comforted, seeing the goddess before her as she appears, her sapphire gaze bright but shadowed by Zariah’s recent actions and her escape. Her eyes focus hard, and she tries to push back all the questions that come to mind when the Voice addresses her again.

Yes.” She breathes at first, inhaling deeper to respond again, to keep less of the shaking in her voice. “Yes, I want to become bright.” Her voice is stronger but it wanes as worry comes through. She pushes it away, deciding that the Voice and her power could bring her back should the breaking of Zariah’s oath kill her. The woman still doesn’t know what it all entails, but where caution sits in her chest, there is Hope. A hope to end this, to better herself so no one could ever hurt her again.

She doesn’t know what to do next, and she looks up at the Voice, taking a small step toward her in the hopes this is what she is asking for.

the Voice
"Then so it shall be. Let us test your mettle, then, Rexanna Reyes, and we shall see what you are truly made of." Whilst her smile remained peaceful, welcoming almost, there was something suddenly and infinitely other in the static of her eyes. "Bastien - it is imperative that you do not interfere with this, lest you wish to inadvertently kill your lover."

Her porcelain hands moved to cup Rexanna's face, fingers splayed gently across her temples. There would be pain - oh but there would be pain, but only momentarily, as the Voice burned away the nerves capable of feeling such things. Rex would feel it then, the magic within her churning, surging, fighting to escape the transformation, and as she looked deep into the electric eyes of her would-be goddess...

They were quite suddenly gone.

Mud beneath her feet. A greyscape of bodies, of broken ruins; the skeleton of a castle that she would know all too well. Halyven in ruin, her people and her spirit broken. "This was your allegiance once, was it not?" The Voice echoed from everywhere and nowhere at once. "This place was one that you called home."

REXANNA
they said you were the crooked kind
Her attention is fixated on the Voice, as her heart thunders beneath her chest. Her smile is soft, but there’s something different in her eyes that she can’t place, but the steel within her bones keeps her standing there – this is the only way, and she’s far too focused on that to keep her attention on Bastien as the Voice gives him directions too. Soon, so soon, those ethereal hands cup her face, and she looks up as the Voice’s fingers splay along her temples. Sharp, sharp fiery pain, is there and then gone as she whimpers in response. But within her, she can feel her magic thrashing and fighting.

Wrong, wrong, wrong. She wants it out of her, the fire and flame, the beauty and everything, if only so Zariah can’t put her hands on it too. But it remains, and her eyes well a small amount with tears at the battle beneath her skin and her sapphire gaze stares into her goddess’ eyes. Then, she’s gone. Bastien’s gone. The Shrine is gone. And she looks down amid the surging beneath her skin as her boots squelch in the mud, to find she’s standing on mud and bodies and broken buildings.

Rexanna stumbles back slightly, her eyes lifting toward the white castle of home and her heart pangs in sorrow and regret. It’s completely destroyed, and she steps forward if only to make sure it’s real. She can see the baker’s half decayed body laying among the ruin’s of her favorite shop in town, she can see so many of the children that had inhabited her empire, and grief soars through her. Somewhere far away (or close?), she can hear the Voice’s words. Her eyes still brim with tears as she nods and stares at the remains of the place she had always thought to be home. “Yes.” She breathes. “I was their queen, before…” She admits, sadly, taking another step forward toward the ruined castle walls – having never seen the final destruction Calstron had done.

If she had died, would he have left Halyven alone? Or would it have even made a difference?

BASTIEN
i am the remedy to your heart,
Bastien was told to stand back, and while he wanted to hold Rexanna through this, comfort and help her...he knew that he couldn't. That to have this work properly, he had to step back. He knew that Rexanna was strong enough to handle it, that she had more mettle than most people in the Hollowed Grounds put together.

Watching with an anxious expression he saw static envelop his love, taking her into itself like a lover holding her in their arms. He could not see what Rexanna was seeing, what her and The Voice were speaking of, but that did not matter: he only hoped it might be over soon, and that it would not hurt her too deeply. While this part was horrible, he had to keep in mind that it was assuring them a future together, and there was nothing else he wanted so badly.

He stood a couple metres behind her, waiting for the process to finish so he could rush forward and embrace his brave, wonderful love.

the Voice
If Rexanna had never seen it, then there was little that the Voice could offer; only piecemeal bits of memories and the imagined details filled in by centuries of knowing destruction, knowing war. "If you choose to become bright, your allegiance to Halyven ends here. Now and forever."

And up ahead, through the ruined walls of the castle, an opening would appear. An opening into something pitch black, cold and unknown. Rexanna could choose to proceed, or she could decide to remain among the destruction of her people. "What is your choice?"

REXANNA
they said you were the crooked kind
Bastien is no longer a part of her mind as she looks at the destruction, remembering and imagining, and seeing it the way she had left it – only more of a ghost town with the fires long extinguished. It hurts, and there’s still those tears that linger behind her lids as she gazes at what occurred. There’s anger within her, regret for having left, but knowing somehow it wouldn’t have made a difference. This wasn’t her, she couldn’t have prevented it. The cards were long on the table before she had a chance to get to them. It was destined to happen.

Her attention lingers on the ruined buildings as the Voice’s words reach her again, and she thinks for a moment of Frey and the realization they had helped her reach. There was nothing she could have done, she was to be reborn and changed. And if she ever did return to Halyven, there were likely shackles and a dungeon awaiting her. Step after step, she trudges through the mud and bodies, until she finds an opening.

Taking one last look back at Halyven, she sucks in a breath. “I am not their queen any longer.” She admits, but part of it is almost to reiterate the fact to herself. Shakily, she looks back toward the black opening and aims to step through it. “I choose to leave it all behind.

the Voice
"It is wise of you to do so. Not only to become bright, but to keep the future in your focus rather than lingering on the past. The mind of a queen resides within you still, Rexanna. Use it to the best of your abilities." The goddess's voice drifted and faded as Rex stepped through the opening, swallowed up and into the dark.

It would be in utter silence that she stepped into a gaunt and filthy cell, bars stretching from floor to ceiling. A dungeon, and one that the former queen likely knew very, very well. It was in this place that Rexanna had brought a silent child into the world. In this place that she had embraced that most human of experiences, only for it to come to naught.

"You know that by joining our ranks, that you will never again carry a child." She had spoken with Bastien about such a thing, but hearing it from Rexanna would be the deciding factor. "And you are still content to do so? There is no part of you that would have that experience again?"

Rexanna has lost the following ability:

Magic: Glamour | An uncontrolled magic, Rexanna will at all times look strikingly beautiful. Dirt, mud, sweat, etc will all seem to repel off of her as well.

REXANNA
they said you were the crooked kind
The hum of the Voice’s words reach her as she steps through the opening. At first, she’s greeted with darkness, and she finds herself silently agreeing with her goddess. There were only so many things she could do when it came to the past – a past that cannot be changed, no matter how much one wished to go back and fix their mistakes. All she can do is focus on the future – and Halyven wasn’t it. It had been a decision thrust upon her without any regards to her own opinion, and she had taken it on through sheer fear.

She is different now, unafraid – that is, until the blackness drifts and her eyes adjust to see the very same cell she had spent so long in. Her heart thunders and roars in her ears, and she chews on her lips as her hands find the cold, chilled bars and damp surroundings. The place she had given birth to a child that couldn’t even take one breath. Another one of her crimes according to the Prince, another reason Halyven burned and smoldered. This time, the tears welling behind her lids do slide down her cheeks as the Voice’s words interrupt the surroundings.

Yes.” She says, knowing from Wessex that it was impossible, but having never asked Bastien of it. She believes herself to be cursed anyway, and finds that rather than worrying over miscarrying yet again, this is the better result. She thinks to Kiada briefly and that strange, different timeline. At least she can’t disappoint anyone anymore. Her head tilts toward the ceiling of the cell and she nods, gripping the gaunt and cold bars tight.

She figures she can exude her motherly instinct toward other things, like pets or friends, and never have to worry about being punished for her inability to continue her blood line. “I am willing to give it all up.” She admits, deep within her growing further and further relieved even if her heart hurts with the result. At least she wouldn’t have the possibility of dying in childbirth. And then, like a falling shawl, she feels herself change slightly, and as she pulls her hands away from the grimy cell bars, the dirt remains on her hands – it remains on her face as she wipes the tears away. She is fearful of remaining here, but she clings to the Voice’s words to keep her rooted, to keep her from spiraling while everything about her life changes.

the Voice
I am willing to give it all up.

It is Rexanna's words, not any act of the Voice, that caused the cell to melt from around them. The rust and the filth fade away too, from where it previously marked her face, her hands. And as the dungeon drifted from sight the Abandoned would be left standing in nothingness, a void stretching far, far into nowhere.

Only the tiniest wink of light danced in the distance, a light which, should she choose to walk towards it, would become the electrifying figure of the Voice. "Your allegiance to your past is no more. Your yearning for a future that may not be is no more. And yet you arrived here, now, and embraced the Old Gods, embraced Frey. Where do you stand now, Rexanna Reyes?"

The Voice opened her arms wide, and should Rexanna choose the goddess, she would feel the sharpened tips of canines in her mouth, and be welcomed to feed for the first time.

Rexanna has regained the "C" shaped brand that was once banished by Frey.

REXANNA
they said you were the crooked kind
The dirt that covers her hands disappear, and it feels as though it was never there to begin with — not in the way the glamour worked, where the dirt wasn’t visible but it still felt oily. She feels clean, and the lock around her heart that changes it colder as she remains in her prison cell begins to melt as the prison, too, disappears. This is what she’s asked for, after all, the glamour fading and disappearing is exactly what she wanted. The magic raging like fire beneath her skin as her tears dry and she inhales sharply at the view of the darkness that now surrounds her — pitch black and suffocating.

There’s a small flicker of light off in the distance, and she focuses on it, beginning to take steps toward it. As she does, the skin around her collarbone prickles and raises, and she lifts a hand to touch it, to feel the brand return. Her stomach sinks, but only a fraction. She’s nobody’s prisoner now. And she never will be again. Her escape from Zariah showed her that much.

Her pace quickens and before she knows it she stands before the ethereal figure of the Voice, as her words wrap around her. The Voice mentions that she’s embraced the old gods, and Rexanna’s sapphire gaze linger on the goddess before her. She has learned from Frey, been cursed by Frey, been blessed by Frey, and heard nothing after. She’s glad that Phoebe is so devoted to them, but it wasn’t a life for Rexanna, to be toying with gods. She looks up into the Voice’s face the best she can. “I choose you.” She says, breathlessly though the tears still well at her eyes, they fade as she stands before the only higher being she feels connected to, despite being abandoned by her own.

Abandoned no longer.

She feels the fangs grow within her mouth, her canines sharpening to a point, and she sees the open arms of the Voice. She doesn’t know exactly how to feed from the Voice, but she lets her instinct (so new and fresh) guide her until she kneels before the Voice and feeds for the first time.

the Voice
"Then you have chosen right, for now and for always."

Enveloping her in an embrace as final and eternal as death, Rexanna would find purchase with her fangs against her goddess, and in place of pain or fear or horror, ecstasy would roar through her, right to her very bones. She would feel as if she could dance upon a knife's edge, as if she could capture the dawn and sing to the roar of a waterfall.

But of course, then it would be gone.

From the darkness, the shrine would appear around them; the books, the orb, and Bastien. And the Voice looked exhausted, but pleased as she stepped back from Rexanna.

"You have done well, my bright one. I believe the melding of your power and the Ascension was a success. How do you feel?"

Rexanna has become a hybrid! Good gosh!
