& I bury hatchets but I keep maps of where I put 'em
Was it going to work? Edy wasn't sure. But it seemed like the sort of thing Zariah would do, and given that it was possible the family-head was going to reappear at any moment, Edy figured if she didn't want to be kicked to the bottom of the Launceleyn-totem pole she'd better at least say she tried to do something while she was interim queen. Throwing magic around at some deadly disease thing seemed like a totally fine idea.

Glancing down at Bobi, the new-queen raised a brow. "Word on the street this shit is infectious. So, you know. No biting it, or eating things that may have bitten it. Deal?" If she understood, the bobcat merely yowled in confirmation.

Standing in front of a large tree that was nearly blackened with an cosmic-onyx sort of black sludge, Edy crinkled her nose. The bush next to it was similarly organically-charred, as was the most at the base.

Lovely.

This PQ takes place IN the Greatwood. If any ascendeds want to come by and snack on Edy, feel free (there's enough canopy shade that you're not in the sunlight). This is for levelling so maybe moving at not a snail's pace? <3 Observers are welcome, you just won't be in the posting order.

1. Edrei
2. Peter
3. Rory
4. Beatrix

Delah
The games of luck our soldiers played
The stones we cut, the songs we made
Though she'd recently opened her woods up to the folks from the Hollowed Grounds, she had still been wary of them. Always watching. When Edrei and Co had first entered into the woods, she was notified. It did not take long for the panther to arrive. Clothed in leathers and fur, Delah appeared soundlessly, her arms crossed against her chest and her head held high. Snippets of the 'new queens' conversation had been gleaned from the many eyes and ears in the woods, and so it was with this bit of knowledge that Delah raised a skeptical and challenging brow.

"Do you not think we have tried magic on this yet?" She asked, her voice like flint in the dead of night, her moss-green eyes hardened. The height difference between the two seemingly went unnoticed, by Delah anyway, so great was her personality and aura.

There were a great many differences between Edrei and Zariah, especially as Peter saw them (Zariah was a familiar kind of leader, and Edrei scared him) but some things never changed. Whether or not Edrei scared him, he would follow her as long as she told him to. It was a lesson beaten into his bones.

Peter stayed silent as he followed the new (temporary?) family head into the greatwoods. Honestly, he wasn’t completely sure what they were going to be doing, but he had made sure to have a bottle of water at his hip. It wouldn’t make a great impression if he couldn’t even use his full range of magic.

The black rotting foliage was somehow worse than anything he could have imagined. Peter took a step further after Edrei had stopped, morbidly curious about the blight now that he was seeing it in person. By the time a voice came out from seemingly nowhere, he was straightening up, though the surprise sent him upright immediately, his eyes on Edrei but all of his focus on the imposing fey.

Here's a thing Rory did not expect to happen: him and Edrei Launceleyn and Peter Launceleyn (among others) going on a forest jaunt to try and use their magic to cure the blight.

Actually, he'd never thought he'd intentionally put himself in her vicinity again, and least of all in such a vulnerable environment. He still remembered, all too clearly, the threat she had made, what her face had looked like when she said it, what her voice had sounded like, and older still, the memory of her fire scorching his skin...

To be completely honest, he was still afraid of her. And he would not have volunteered for this kind of thing if not for one particular reason: the blight. Ever since seeing the Undine, and seeing her healed by the combined power of everyone gathered (and Arduinna, that mythical, mystical Fae) the blight had been on his mind. He had wanted to find out more about it, but he hadn't had the time, and lately he'd been using the notice board to practice his reading. So... there he was.

There he bloody motherfucking was, with two Launceleyns, one of whom had promised to kill him if he ever said Ronin's name again, in the Greatwood, where he had sworn off going because bad shit always happened when he did.

But then he had seen the Undine, and fallen in love with the waterfall, and.. there he was.

Once Delah appeared he felt something in his chest both loosen and tighten. So, he had witnesses if he was going to get brutally murdered, but also, she might not give a fuck, and also be the one to murder them.

But Gods, what a dumb as fuck idea it had been to go to this...

Should Delah look his way he would nod at her, but he made no attempt to get her attention. Silent, Rory waited for Edrei to give some form of instruction (or just outright murder him).

Bea was late. Her mom wasn't around. Aunt Edy was cool. Peter was the wimpiest little wimp that ever wimped into wimpington to spread his wimpery around the wimperworth. So really there was nothing to worry about. The second youngest Launceleyn rolled to the meeting spot fashionably late, sucking on a piece of hard candy she most definitely didn't steal out of the hidden candy drawer in Peter's room. "'Sup nerd. Heard mom couldn't even get a lady to marry you. Sucks to suck." she said, punching him in the arm as she passed. Then she spotted some weird dude with long hair. Her eyes narrowed, lips making a loud smacking noise as she sucked on the candy. "Aunt Edy, who's the dead weight and why is his hair so dumb?" she said, looking Rory dead in the eyes with absolutely zero fear. She turned to look at Edy...

But then she saw the fairy.

She gasped, just barely avoiding choking on the candy. Her lips pulled back into a wide grin and she rushed over to Delah, clearly enthralled. "It's true! The fairies are real! You're so cool!! Can you teach me fairy magic please please please??" she said, bouncing on her heels as she gazed at the fae war chief with pure, childlike ardor. Edy's work or whatever was completely forgotton. There was a fairy and that was wayyyyy more important.

"And do you know for certain your magic is the same as ours? Cause if it is, feel free to say so and maybe we can all try pissing on it and then go home." Edy replied, eyeing Delah with a casual shrug. Diplomacy in action kids, take note.

Leaning casually against Peter as she was a good few inches taller than he was, Edy glanced towards Rory and tilted her head to the side. This was the one Jigano made such a big fucking deal about not killing. Pursing her lips, she wondered silently why that was. Were they banging? Rory was one of those sorta-hunky farm boys, which didn't particularly strike the not-teenager as Jigano's type. Maybe the bard owed him something, or maybe Rory owed Jigano something. If he was dead, he couldn't pay up.

Yep. That was probably it.

As Bea strolled up, as much as Edy wanted to smirk at her antics, she had to be an adult, and so she dutifully grumbled. "OY. You're a princess now. You can't just walk around being a dick in public. That's why doors and locks were invented." She said with a smirk.

"Right, well. So the point of today is to blast the blight with some magic and see if ... anything at all happens. If it does, that'll tell us something. If it doesn't, that'll tell us something too."

Looking at those assembled, Edy narrowed her eyes.

"Whatchu got?" She asked Delah.

Leaning her head against Peter, she reached out to squeeze his cheeks. "I already know about you." She purred, kissing a cheek made plump by her fingers. "Bea got her own magic, aaaand a bit of her momma's so watch out." Edy trilled, shooting Bea a conspiratorial wink.

Towards Rory, Edy raised a brow. "You got that...weirdo animal thing, right?"

Nephele is no defiant shield in face of the waves of war, a scientist more than a soldier. Still her soul lives in the bloodveins of these woods, and it shifts and recoils against the invasive taint of the Outlanders. Neither her curiosity over their peculiar fleshy bodies, nor her interest in their violent, rough world would be enough to slake her desire to bleed them when their feet touch her forest floor. As if they have the right to crush it beneath their blooded heels, when they had already destroyed so much of their own world. The Fae had held the Greatwood since the Dawn, and had been entrusted with its safety when the barrier fell and the little creatures playing at god were entombed with their own bloodthirsty kind. Did they think that just because they had been freed that they would simply move on to the next land? Ready to rend and raize?

Nephele does not trust them, no matter her curiosity. She does trust Delah though, knows that no other in the Village would place the safety of their people any higher. If the War Chief deigns to allow the humans upon their soil, she will not object and will instead use it to her advantage as any good Fae would. She would merely...research them. Perhaps with sharp scalpels, if they were particularly annoying.

So when word reaches Delah's ears of their presence, Nephele hesitates only briefly before answering the call as well.

Flame hair curls in artistic waves, loose down her back as the Fae woman flies swiftly from her studies to the wildwood. Her beautiful face is twisted in a grimace of distaste, hazel eyes narrowed against the wind. The scrunch of her face only soothes as she comes upon the group. They are not privy to the truth of her emotions. Bare feet drop to the earth, a whisper of wind scattering brittle leaves from her swift arrival. She strides on slim legs towards Delah, the only familiar face in this gathering of...strangers. It is the kindest word she can allow them even in the privacy of her own mind.

I hate this, she breathes softly as she comes to Delah's side, in the language only the two of them know. It feels wrong down to her bones to see them gathered here, careless and oblivious. When the beautiful dark-skinned stranger snidely response to Delah, Nephele tilts her head and smiles beatifically, almost appreciative of the sass from this woman. If it were not directed at Delah, perhaps.

"Urine is a common fertilizer, so you are welcome to try if all else fails," she purrs with a quirk of her lips, eyes alight with firespark amusement and mishcief. Whether the woman takes it as bantering or insult only time will tell, but it matters little to her. Nephele tucks her copper wings against her back, keeping tight to Delah's side. They are not close, but she is a familiar and trustworthy face, one Nephele would always appreciate at her side when faced with these strangers.

An exuberant child startles her, and her hazel eyes flick down in surprise. A part of her preens at the compliments, while another scowls at being treated like a butterfly in a glass bauble. Still, of the two of them, Nephele is likely the friendlier for this child to converse with. Gods, how old is she?! Nephele didn't know they even came in this size!

"I'm afraid we cannot teach you our magic," she inputs, unable to lie even for the sake of the child's curiosity. Though her mischievous gaze flits over to Delah, wondering if the Chief would deign to break out her glamour magic for the whelp. "You're near small enough to be Fae of your own right," she comments, deciding to be nice and distract the eager child from annoying her Chief. If she stresses the word 'fae' to try to substitute fairy in the child's vocabulary, well. Hopefully she is intelligent enough to catch onto it.

Delah
The games of luck our soldiers played
The stones we cut, the songs we made
Delah can feel Nephele's presence in her mind like a ghost as the clock strikes midnight. The botanist has one of the most clever minds that the warchief has ever encountered, and something in her stiffens and is bolstered by her mere presence here.

Nor I. Delah repeats, her voice like the peeling of bark beneath sun-dappled trees as she speaks the language known only to the fae.

Turning her sharp mossy gaze back towards Edrei, the warchief raises a brow. "I know that your magic can never compare to the power of the woods." She counters with the ease of authority. Her lips quirk into a smile that is as deadly as it is beautiful, her green eyes ringing with predatory gold for just a moment at Nephele's comment. In other worlds and societies suggesting that one piss on something valuable (the woods), might be taken as a slight. But it is as Nephele has said, the urine would water the infected plants if nothing else, and so Delah merely grins darkly.

So far, so good. Rory was still alive, and no attempts had been made to change that fact. And as long as he didn't provoke Edy, well, hopefully it'd stay that way. So he stood where he was, a little to the side, feeling more like a spectator than a participant.

Then somebody's unruly brat bounced onto the scene, and to make matters about fifty times worse three things happened: Rory learned the kid was a Launceleyn, she insulted his use, and she insulted his hair.

Rory was very, very tempted to set her hair on motherfucking fire in retaliation.

But he didn't, because he thought that setting one of Edy's relations on fire in front of her was a pretty short one-way trip to Fire Hell and he was very interested in staying out of it for a little longer. So he did not grace the annoying, spoiled child with any reply at all, merely returning the stare with an icy cold one. He would let Edy bully him around, but he would not let a child do it.

Then the short and irritating human bounded up to the Fae in a manner that had him hoping Delah would have the balls (that he admittedly lacked) to smite her on the spot, but he did not receive the pleasure of watching someone else do his dirty work for him.

Instead he turned his attention on Edrei once she addressed him. "And fire," he responded, his voice clear but quiet.

Edrei's arm was heavy on his shoulder, but the extra weight didn't bother him as much as the appearance of Beatrix. The mention of the failed wedding brought a scowl to his face, and he pulled his arm in close as she passed. Thankfully, Rory, and the fey, were more interesting than he was, and drew the young girls attention away. Thank god.

Peter turned to look at Edrei just as he fingers came to pinch at his cheek, making him wince and lean away as much as he could. The leaning on him was bearable, anything that actually hurt he was going to have a problem with. And the kiss, though for a different reason, one that made him stiff and his cheeks hot.

He was glad he didn't need to share his magic with the assembled group. Peter had never been one to be the centre of attention, even for a moment, and the strangers and fey only amplified his discomfort. He did pull off the cap of his water bottle though, ready to go when the queen ordered.

Well getting scolded by Auntie Edy was not anticipated. Bea looked at her, wrinkling her nose with a hint of defiance. "Isn't part of bein' a princess that I can say and do what I want anywhere?" she asked, shooting Peter in particular a look that communicated he was lucky. She could have been way meaner if Edrei didn't get in the way.

But fortunately she was easily distracted by the Fae. She the one she spoke to didn't respond but there was another one! Bea nearly squealed with excitement, clear as day on her face. "What if I promise to try really hard? I'm a really good studier!" she said, still hoping to maybe get some lesson. That she was at least given the concession of being near the right height made her day. "Oh I wish I was! That would be so cool knowing Fae magic and being able to fly around!" she said grinning.

The grin turned mischevious though as Edrei said all she could do, returning her conspiratorial glance. Oh yeah, no one really knew what she was capable of.

Edrei the Rapacious
& I bury hatchets but I keep maps of where I put 'em
At the arrival of yet another fae, Edy pursed her lips wondering if this was about to become...a thing. Another us vs. them thing. As much as the queen was always up for a good fight, this whole narrative was getting a bit old. Really, Edy just wanted to try and help. Zariah hadn't been able to do much about the blight, but maybe Edy could. So long as the cure was just blasting it constantly with aggressive-amounts of magic, anyways. Wanting very badly to mimic Delah's words back at her, Edy merely tossed on a bright but fake smile and shrugged her shoulders. "Well, you said it didn't start until we all showed up, so maybe you need something else other than the power of the woods."

The fact that Rory now possessed fire magic actually upped his appeal in Edy's eyes. With a wink, she nodded, before looking down at Bea. "Can doesn't mean you should." Edy counselled, surprisingly wisely, with a wink towards Beatrix.

"Alrighty. Braids, we'll do some fire first. If that doesn't work, Bea, why don't you use the thing." Might as well hit it with their strongest powers first. "Peter, if all else fails, water, I guess."

She shrugged her shoulders. Next up they'd try something else, but they might as well go full on elemental to start.

"Feel free to jump in." Edy offered with a look towards Delah and Nephele.

Glancing towards Rory, Edy raised a brow. "Here goes nothing." She mused, before opening her palms and sending a straight arc of fire towards the blighted bush.

He wasn't sure how to read Edy's reaction to his confession, so he chose to not look too deeply into it. He was still alive, after all, and she hadn't set him on fire just to see how much fiery shit he could do. After all, everbody's powers ranged from 'blow out a candle' to 'i n f e r n o', and he hadn't said where on that spectrum he was.

So fire was the first plan. Rory's dispassionate gaze slid onto Bea again, wondering what thing power she possessed, but there was no point in speculating. And, his gaze briefly landing on Peter, who had found himself bested by Rory's other magic, he wondered what he could do, aside from create (or possibly, throw) things.

"Mmh," he hummed in response to Edrei, drawing a deep breath and focusing on that wild and wondrous part of his soul. As Edrei's jet of fire shot towards the blight another stream joined it, originating from just in front of Rory's palm and aimed at the blight creeping along the roots and stem of the bush. He'd found it easier to direct and focus the magic by linking it to his hands, though strictly speaking, it wasn't necessary.

Bea groaned, giving Edrei an irritated look. She was working on becoming a fairy, okay? Clearly there were priorities here that were more important than a stupid plant disease. But she shuffled her way over to the line up, crossing her arms to wait her turn as the guy with the stupid hair went first. Despite her young age she looked entirely unimpressed with his magical feat, looking incredibly bored. Edrei was clearly the superior fire master. This guy was probably a one trick pony. Loser.

At least it meant it was her turn pretty quick. With a mischievous grin she untucked the Left Hand pendant from her shirt, letting it dangle there as she eyed up the gross, inky plants. After a moment, she grabbed the pendant again, inside which was the magic stone Edrei had borrowed her. Bracing herself, she shoved the necklace forward and a powerful burst of lightning shot forth, breaking off into multiple smaller bolts to zap the inky black stuff on the plants. The blow was so powerful that it sent her sliding backwards, but she managed to stay on her feet, giggling in the wake of the power of what she had cast.
