THE
CLOISTER OF TRIALS
Well, well, well. They had come so far in such a short amount of time, the competition halving in one fell swoop. The crowd above (the spectators now numbering as many ex-combatants than not) would watch as those who were victorious were sequestered away, back behind the stone doors in the labyrinthine pathways.

Each was still segregated in their individual tunnel, but would feel as a Fae sidled besides them, affixing something to their clothing. A few more breaths of silence, and the doors opened again.

All of them.

Upon entering the arena a second time, Wessex, Melita and Ianto would find themselves with a red patch pinned to their clothing. Jigano, Amalia, Kiada and Adam - you guessed it - a blue patch.

"Life is not always fair, and teams are not always even. Your goal is to defeat the opposing team!" A voice called. "You may do this by removing the patch from their person - or by taking them out physically. Work together, or go it alone. The choice is yours! BEGIN!"

There is no post order - have at it! Anything goes, though attuned will find that the patch does not shift with them. They may carry it, but losing it or dropping it means a forfeit!

Amalia
A deeper conversation is all I want from you-
Teams.

After her truly startling victory (if it could be called that) Amalia is ready to be done. She hates this - the combat, the anger, the way her blood runs wild, the aching, biting, feral leopardess coiled beneath her skin. As the fae prepare her she briefly considers forfeiting the following round. The baker is not built for fighting, and though part of her does enjoy the thrill, that is the part that terrifies her most, the part she wishes to bury away.

She wants to quit, but of course she can't, because the next round is teams.

Amalia blinks as the wall goes up, her staff still clutched between her hands, a blue patch affixed to her chest. Glancing around, the girl realizes she knows everyone there, which leaves her mouth a little dry. Also in blue are Adam, Kiada, and Jigano, and in red Ianto, Melita, and...

Wessex.

No time to waste, then. Swallowing, Amalia runs over to Adam, calling out to Jigano and Kiada through the Attuned bond. Melita uses a staff. Kiada has faced her before. Focus her and Ianto; we'll take Wessex. Try not to hurt anyone. Aloud, to Adam, the girl calls out. "Wessex is Ascended - she's weak to light and fire, but she's strong in close combat. Can you keep her distracted at a distance? Then I can try to grab her color."

So saying, Amalia shifts, the staff falling at Adam's side as she takes an owl form. She is careful to grasp the color swatch in her talon, though it means she has only one with which to snatch Wessex's. Trusting Adam and Coffee to distract the older woman, the small owl tries to find an opening, aiming to snatch the red patch away before the Ascended can be hurt, or hurt anyone else.

Ama shifts to owl form, her blue patch in her left talon, and tries to grab Wessex's with her right talon.

dont know where the lights are taking us
but something in the night is dangerous
No answer from the Fae she questioned, it seems, which puts her even more on edge, but there is nothing left to do but move forward. She enters the ring and finds Melita and Ianto wearing the same red patches - versus four others who have blue. Well fiiiiiiiine then. Just another challenge.

The goal is announced and hopefully before anyone can shift, Wessex hisses to her teammates, “ Hide your patches in your clothes and stay back for a sec,” before peels her off, balls it up, and stuffs it in her leather top. She then bolts towards Amalia and Adam, intending to get as close as she can to as many of the Blues before they scatter. It’s more of a bowling-ball move than her usual agility, though she does lean heavily on her speed and the element of surprise. When the Ascended judges that she might be in the optimal position, which is admittedly very tricky, she lets loose her Bio-pulse, trying to affect her opponents’ (and their companions) balance, heart-rate, or blood pressure long enough for one of her teammates to snatch something off a Blue. If they've listened and stayed back long enough. There wasn't a lot of time to communicate.

Knowing what Adam was like last time she encountered him (that is, drunk and unaware), Wessex pivots to where she thinks he is and tries to snatch his patch off.

-----------------

Wessex hides her patch inside her clothes and then tries to run towards specifically Amalia and Adam, but potentially the Blues as a whole, so she can emit her bio pulse and disorient them.

Adam
Of course Adam had won his individual trial. He was Adam fucking Pikely, after all. It had hardly been a surprise, and he had not at any point been scared or worried. Nope.

As they were brought to the next challenge, he hoped it might be something based in agility or wits -- but when he saw his teammates and the coloured patches they all wore...he guessed quickly what was about to happen. Coffee by his shoulders and his hands on his guns, he waited for the action to begin.

And it really did begin. There was a sudden flurry of movement, leaving Adam with only a moment to size up their opponents. Wessex - scary. Melita - probably okay. Ianto - what a fucking asshole. Immediately, he wanted to fight the bastard, but tried to listen to Amalia, wanting to at least try at teamwork. Besides, Wessex immediately seemed to head right for him; he ducked down and tried to roll out of the way, using his agilty to flip towards Ianto, as Coffee stayed back.

Now! Adam told the dragon, hoping to have him blow a large wave of fire around the Ascended woman.

--
Adam tries to dodge out of the way of Wessex and heads for Ianto. Coffee tries to blow a ring of fire around Wessex.

He prowled through the tunnels, suffering the fussiness of whatever the Fae were doing more from curiosity than true tolerance, but he allowed the touches until the door slid open and he could see what it had all been about. A color patch? Ah... and a team. Adam he barely knew, and that made his presence the easiest to bear. Kiada and Amalia... something wounded and sharp twisted in his stomach and he turned from them to face their opponents.

Wessex had made it through the first round, and he pitied whoever her opponent had been. Melita was one he would have preferred to have at his side rather than facing him, but clearly what they each wanted mattered little to the Fae who were running the trial. Ianto... there was something off about the foxy man, a strangeness that ran even deeper than Jigano's own, and the bard frowned as Isuma leapt from his shoulder to take to the air and out of the way of the combat once more. His mind was shuttered against Amalia's mental speech, though he caught echoes of it, but he was already moving away from his color-coded comrades as they all exploded into motion, content to let Wessex and Amalia hammer at each other for the moment.

Ianto had caught his eye, and neither his grim expression nor his silence changed as he sprinted towards his fellow fox, judging his moment carefully before he lashed out with his rapier to cut the colored patch from the other man's clothing, his sword's edges as sharp as its tip, even as he used the staff in his other hand to fend Ianto off from closing the distance between them.

Ever-helpful, Isuma glided overhead nearby. Should Ianto try to shift, she would attempt to dive down and snatch the red patch before he could recover it.

Jigano attempts to close with Ianto and cut the patch from his clothing with his rapier while defending with his staff. Isuma is on standby to try and steal Ianto's patch if he tries to shift.

KIADA
this is your sport,
but she's not playing a game
Lucas’ last words give the Harpy something to look forward to, and she almost expects to see him again (dare she say she wishes to see him again?) when the doors lift. She steps out into the view of the spectators and spots not just herself but, teams. And she glances down momentarily to see the patch pinned to her chest. Ah, teamwork. Kiada suddenly wonders how it will work, how she’s not entirely a team player when it comes down to it. But she spots Melita right when Amalia and Wessex begin their attacks, and watches while Adam heads toward Ianto.

Perfect.

The Harpy zooms over to grab Amalia’s shield she’s left behind, and hooks it over her hand before turning her attention on Melita. This time she doesn’t hold back, palming the knife in her other hand as she sends it flying toward Melita.

Kiada grabs Amalia’s shield and heads toward Melita, throwing a knife at her.

MELITA
Melita had learned very early on that life wasn’t fair.

That if one yearned to rise, to triumph, they had to pick up the pieces, sever the broken ends, cut away the frayed strands.

So she thought naught of the impending trial, with lopsided numbers and figures – only hurt that she was on opposing sides (again, a sharp reminder of her battle with Remi) of friends, yearning to twitch a smile at Amalia, at Jigano, at Adam, with alternating colors aligned to their forms. Maybe it didn’t matter, in the end. Would it change anything? Would it obliterate allies and comrades? Or would they still be together, after everything? Her heart hurt, panged, twitched, a throbbing ache in her chest.

Perhaps she shouldn’t have signed up for this.

Her head tilted, listening to Wessex’s instructions (an age-old ritual; delivering her a confirmed nod, a twinkle of irreverent spirit in her eyes), ensuring her bow bracelet was in place, that her staff was humming in her hands, that Fangorn was blistering at her heels. The red patch glistening on her clothing, like blood, like fire, like the painted lacquer of the Dragon’s Throat blistered against her beating soul, and she tucked it into her pocket, shoving it deep, hoping it would be enough to safeguard the token.

Wessex bolted away, at the forefront, and there was a slide of motions and shifting, owl feathers, rapiers, and then –

Kiada.

Whatever held the youth back blasted away at the sight of her adversary – and a snicker, a smirk, an emblem of fire and ash and ichor persisted, pervaded through her entity – alive again, despite her trembling hands. Kiada seemed to have the same notion, predator upon predator, enervated by their shared outrage, hatred, and vehemence. Any misgivings were hushed, quieted, absent, gone.

The belligerence and abhorrence stuck to her senses, striving to duck out of the way as Kiada hurled her knife; and in one graceful motion, mimicked the drawing of a bowstring, allowing Arduinna’s gift to come swiftly into her hands – a beatific, rounded bow, grabbing hold of the arrows in her quiver, and notching one scorched by fire. Then she pulled the tangible, real string taut, rigid, and she allowed the arrow to fly – a searing munition in the wind – intending to ignite the Harpy.

--

Melita tries to duck away from Kiada’s knife, and then uses her bowstring bracelet to bring her bow to life – stringing a fire arrow and letting it fly towards Kiada.

it's not what it looks like
Teams mattered not one bit to the fox as he strode back into the arena, a red patch affixed to his chest. Still, no sooner had he entered the arena when all hell broke loose, and the usually buoyant merchant let out a quiet sigh of almost resignation. Jigano was to be his main opponent, it appeared, but he was aware of Adam, too, in the background. Staying back until the stern woman did whatever it was she was going to do, Ianto attempted to dodge back from Jigano.

Should he be successful, he would shift near instantly. It would not be a fox that appeared, however, but a crimson winged cardinal, swooping up to try and aid in combat against Amalia.

Ianto tries to dodge out of Jigano's way, then shifts into a cardinal to make chase on Amalia.

THE
CLOISTER OF TRIALS
All hell breaks loose, and the crowd is loving it! This round's action resolved as follows:

- Wessex engages her bio pulse, but it seems as though the Blues' willpower is up to the task, and none suffer any adverse effects. She is quick enough, however, to snatch away Adam's patch as she dashes by, too fast for him and too fast for Coffee to blast her with fire! Adam is OUT of the competition!

- Jigano is quick and agile with his rapier, and before Ianto can react he manages to slice the patch off with a dramatic shwshhhh! Ianto is OUT of the competition!

- Both Kiada and Melita are successful on their hits of one another, one receiving a nasty cut from a throwing knife, and the other a flaming arrow to the shoulder. Ouch! At least they got to trade ammo though, no?

Kiada HP: 20
Melita HP: 38.5

- Then there is Amalia. Amalia with her keen owl eyes and her sharp, sharp talons. Whilst Wessex has hidden her patch, the owl dives like a bullet, tearing savagely not at flesh, no, but at clothing. Not only does she manage to rip the patch free, but in a case sometimes referred to as critical failure on the Ascended's part, it flutters out and to the ground! Wessex is OUT of the competition!

Post order is as follows:

Jigano
Amalia
Melita
Kiada

Though there had been some personal satisfaction in defeating Deimos, Jigano found none in taking down Ianto, except that he was able to do so without harming the other fox. Glancing over to see how his team was doing, he noted Adam's patch in Wessex's hand, but Wessex's patch lying on the ground. Only one red badge remained in play, then, and it belonged to Melita, who was standing strong against Kiada as the two sniped at each other from a distance.

More than anything he wanted to pick up Ianto's red patch and even the odds against the honeybee girl, but he could already imagine the jeering if he tried to switch sides. Would the Fae even allow it? They knew so little of the rules of this game. But there was something dangerously personal in the way Melita and Kiada flung their weapons at each other, aiming not for colored swatches but for skin and flesh and bone. He gave Ianto an apologetic look and then sprinted to close the distance to Melita 's side, attempting to knock the red patch from her clothing with the sharpened end of his staff, in an attempt to hurry the uneven match to a close and prevent further bloodshed.

Jigano tries to get close to Melita and knock her patch off with his staff, without hurting her.

Amalia
A deeper conversation is all I want from you-
Through some strange miracle Wessex's patch falls away, cut loose by talons and left on the ground. The owl cannot help but breathe a sigh of relief, the adversary she was most concerned about knocked out of the game before she could unsheathe those claws.

Glancing about to take stock, she is excited to see Ianto neutralized as well, though the sight of Jigano still makes her feel a pang of loss and confusion and anger. She had heard he was sick, had sent bread and consolation with Rory; to see him here, fighting, without apparent signs of illness stings and snaps against her heart. Heavily the owl turns away, watching as Adam leaves the game before circling to their last opponent.

Amaila's initial plan had been to repeat her attack on Wessex, swooping down and carefully extracting the colored patch without drawing blood. And were it just Melita she would- but there is something in the air between the girls, and as the owl remembers that night when Kiada dragged herself, battered, into the store, a deep sort of dread settles into her stomach.

She shifts back to human as she lands, transferring the blue patch to her hand before shoving it into a pocket. They're both already bleeding and scorched; "Kiada! Melita! Enough!" Amalia cries, reaching out to try and grab Kiada's hand before she can throw another blade, her body between the feuding girls, a shield against more unnecessary rage.

Amalia is focused on keeping Kiada and Melita from killing each other.

MELITA
No patch fell from Kiada, no whip of color from Melita’s pocket, yet, they’d already established their role in this game – fight, fight, fight, the hues only an excuse to dissolve back into their abhorrence.

And by the time the pain from Kiada’s knife erupted over her shoulder, by the time she watched her flames, her weaponry strike and land, the rest of her team had flickered apart. Wessex had assailed Adam. Jigano had removed Ianto. Amalia had knocked Wessex out of the running.

Then she was alone.

Sometimes it was a frightful, terrifying thing to be alone – the only thing left amidst battlefields and battlegrounds, the rest of the world vacant and gone,  or on an opposing side, friends suddenly adversaries due to unforeseen circumstances or rules. It was like the Rift, deep in the shadows, striving desperately to save her sister, to save anyone or anything behind her, limbs trembling, shaking, blood dripping from her wounds; honeybee girl returned to a world that had left her gutted, altered, and contemptuous.

Be the bigger monster, her quivering hands whispered, pulsing with her staff in one hand, the bow in the other, trembling like a leaf. Take them down her heart raced, pervading, an insistent tone that devoured and consumed. She should pay, her mind echoed, eyes flickering briefly to Kiada, her knives, her shield, everyone else gone; naught left for her to do but either simper, whine, surrender, or devastate.

Had she ever given in?

Jigano’s approach was noted by Fangorn, hoping to help his bonded somehow, rambling forward in hopes of tripping the bard’s approach.

And while Melita saw the Sage as a friend, as a mentor, some sort of guiding hand with wisdom, with sagacity, in all her rage, in all her distress, in the blinding holes of the Rift drifting down upon her senses, all she had was her ferocity. She maneuvered forward, trying to duck out of his range.

Then the hand holding her staff whipped quick and swift, don’t touch me snarling against her hackles, raised, a predator backed into a corner, intending to land upon Jigano in whatever capacity she could muster, aching to drop his colored square on the ground. Then she turned, glancing, waiting for the others to follow suit, to snag at her, tear her flesh, carve her bones away –

She wanted to cry. She wanted to laugh. She wanted to destroy. She wanted to curl into a ball and make everything stop.

Amalia’s voice cut through the blighted, enigmatic haze, the belligerence dragging her down, suffocating her, the baker’s figure, her frame, a shield before the Harpy, not allowing Melita to get any closer, for Kiada to cease and desist throwing her knives. She reminded the youth of her mother, but there were no warm lullabies or soft tunes here; and the shaking wouldn’t stop.

--

As Jigano approaches, Fangorn intentionally bounds for his legs, trying to trip him up. Melita attempts to hit Jigano with her staff and knock the patch from him.

KIADA
this is your sport,
but she's not playing a game
There's a part of her that burns wickedly as her knife lands, as she watches it bubble with blood — it doesn’t last long as suddenly the Harpy is pushed back, and she stumbles as fire rages from her shoulder. There’s a gasp and a hiss that leaves her as she drops the shield to reach for her shoulder, where the arrow has punctured and the flames both searing and cauterizing.

Her eyes find Melita’s figure again, ignoring the world around as to who has what patches left. It’s as if there’s only Melita and her, the Bumblebee and the Harpy, and she sneers as she rips the arrow out. Blood begins to pour freely from her shoulder and down her chest and she staggers a slight step forward, teeth bared like a wolf’s.

But Amalia is there, and the fire and fury in her eyes shutters as she spots the Leopardess, as she claims it’s enough. But is it ever enough? She had tried to repair the bridges, bridges that had been crumbling from the start. Melita wasn’t willing, so neither was Kiada anymore. She wanted to show Melita her strength and power, to show her what a gods favorite could do — even when it was a god of chaos and destruction.

Kiada had been chosen.

And she steps forward with a hand slick with blood as she tosses the arrow to the ground and eyes Melita again as Jigano approaches, and she glances toward Amalia with a shadowed, shuttered face — that darkness returning that she had told her about before that overcomes her.

She reaches for another knife and throws it aiming to cut the fabric holding the patch.

Kiada steps around Amalia to toss a throwing knife at Melita again, hoping it cuts the fabric of one of her pockets.

THE
CLOISTER OF TRIALS
Daaaaaaaaaaaaamn, you combatants! It goes down like this:

- Jigano swoops in on Melita, quick as a dancer, though where his movements are intended not to injure, she does not share the same limitations. As a result, Jigano is able to knock the coloured patch from her clothing! But in the same motion her own weapon smacks out, delivering the same fate to his own square of fabric. (And a hefty blow to the ribs, besides!) Jigano and Melita are both OUT of the competition!

- Amalia is successful in preventing Kiada from throwing another knife Melita's way... but that does not mean the battle is over.

With the Blues firmly victorious, a Fae voice roars out. "Two remain and shall face each other down! The victor will proceed to the final round!"

Teams do not remain teams for very long.
