THE
CLOISTER OF TRIALS
Like you didn't see this coming. Kiada will be allowed a moment of reprieve, to catch her breath, to heal, to request water perhaps, before the torches seem to brighten, the ground begins to shift, and the crowd grows eerily quiet.

There is only one more obstacle between Kiada and the title of Greatwood Guardian.

She - of course - must take the title from the Fae who currently holds it.

A drumbeat sounds, low at first, but with building anticipation. Ready or not, here she comes...

shield for a heart,
and a sword for a tongue
Amalia’s words ring in her ears, they remain and return, fade and bounce back. She has taken the staff and the shield, with the sounds of the Fae and friends alike in the stands, celebrating, calling her name after Amalia’s concession. Her hands tremble as she begins to breathe easier, pushing aside the tears that had begun to brim, waiting for what comes next – though she think she knows.

And she understands.

She’s beckoned to remain in the ring, and she does. She catches her breath, uses the staff to heal, wipes the blood from her face, streaking it across like some kind of warpaint. And the crowd grows quiet. She believes she knows what’s coming next. The beat is low, building up, and Kiada stands with the shield and staff. She awaits the one person she concludes to be the last trial.

Delah. Her captor when her and Amalia breached the Greatwood. And she wonders if the warrior finds it fitting, that the two to reach the top had been the first two captured. She disregards it, preparing herself and clearing her mind, wondering what tricks the woman has this time or if it’s a fair brawl. She takes a defensive stance, shield up and staff at the ready as she awaits Delah’s approach.

Kiada heals with the staff, then basically takes a defensive stance and waits xD

these violent delights have violent ends
From the crowd Delah watched. She watched the way Amalia conceeded and it made her stomach turn. But she watched too how Kiada rose to the challenge, how she didn't back down from the challenge posed by the snow-leopard even though the questions issued had not been hers to ask. But she had answered well enough.

But how would she fight?

Racing through the opened door as a jaguar, the war-chief would not begin with opening statements, with pithy remarks, with warnings or council. She would begin as any Greatwood guardian should: with action.

On swift paws, Delah would aim to race towards Kiada shifting easily as she came within about 7 feet or so and continuing the run. With arms outstretched she'd send a two-fold blast of magic towards the blue-eyed challenger: disintegration to dissolve her clothing in its entirety and sap her strength, and a blast of powerful air to sucker-punch her in the gut and hopefully send her careening into the wall.

Delah uses mastered disintegration to sap Kiada's energy and remove all her clothing (lolz), and then sends a blast of upgraded air to sucker-punch her in the gut and send her flying.

THE
CLOISTER OF TRIALS
The Greatwood Guardian's entrance is swift, deadly, and holds nothing back. Is it Ludo's luck, or Safrin's blessing, or the conviction of Frey in this arena of nature that gives Delah such strength and ferocity? Is it her years of experience in defence of the woods, perhaps?

Whatever it might be, the attack is quick and brutal. Kiada would be thrown back against the wall like a ragdoll, her clothing disintegrating around her, the energy seeping from her very bones. She has fought well - exceedingly well, but against this, the war cheftain of the Fae, the fight is over before it has very much begun.

The crowd is silent. Stunned. But one by one, they begin to applaud, to cheer, to stamp their feet. Not only for the Greatwood Guardian, victorious in the defence of her title - but for her opponent too - audacious, relentless, fierce. Perhaps the next Cloister would see a different result, should Kiada train hard, and keep the fire in her belly.

Delah has successfully defended her title against Kiada, thus concluding the Cloister of Trials! Thank you everyone for your participation! <3

shield for a heart,
and a sword for a tongue
Well, it ended quickly. Perhaps it wasn’t so much the fact she didn’t even stand a chance that bruised her pride, as much as it was how. The Fae comes out with guns blazing, so to speak, and the Harpy hardly has a chance, barely stood a chance. She supposes it makes sense, the one to have captured her and throw her into a Pit should be the guardian after all. And she comes to terms with it when the magic hits her and she tries to defend with the shield. But it does nothing, nothing in comparison as the magic hits her and her clothes fall away, revealing pale scarred skin from head to toe, and she goes flying.

She abandons everything, staff and shield in her hands the minute the wind hits her hard in the stomach. And as she careens through the air toward the rocky wall, she tries to get as little damage as possible, shifting from scarred, wounded and bleeding, pale flesh to feathers as she hits the wall hard on her arm and hits the ground.

She isn’t bitter about the loss, but about the clothes and her scars. And she makes a silent vow as her head swims and she tries to catch her breath, to train more and do better. To win. But she was inexperienced and had made it so far, and she comes to terms with it slowly as the stars stop spinning in her mind. She tries to stand, legs wobbling and shaking, wings trembling, and she looks for Delah with scarlet eyes while her shoulder begins to pour blood again. The hit had jarred her just enough to reopen the wound. “Guardian.” She acknowledges Delah despite the pain and breathlessness she feels, she tries to send a feeling of acknowledgement of the power the woman has, swallowing the bitterness and the fire within her gut that she’s sure will be purple by tonight.

And she attempts to pick herself up while the crowd above cheers for their Greatwood Guardian. At least Kiada had tried, made it the furthest than the other Hollowed Grounds citizens. And for that she has a bit of pride, wounded or not.

Though Delah is small, she extends a hand towards the fallen warrior to help her stand. Wind magic accompanies the gesture to lend strength where her physical body cannot. Though the battle was fast and perhaps unfitting the final trial, a smile plays darkly on the warrior's lips, her moss-green eyes alight with mirth. "Rise, Kiada. The woods welcome you." She says, her voice like flint amidst the cheers around them.

"You have the heart of the guardian, which is the first step. But heart alone will not protect our woods from her various foes. Train well and perhaps I will see you in this arena again."

Looking up into the stands and seeing the faces of the family she has sworn her life to protect, for the first time for many of the grounders, they will see Delah laughing with joy.

shield for a heart,

She is surprised when Delah approaches, offering a hand to her, and despite the self consciousness she feels in regards to her scars and her story, she shifts back into herself once more — clothes gone and her back to the wall, she accepts the help from the fae and the wind, and stands on shaking, wobbling legs as Delah speaks. The rush of standing makes her head spin, but she clenches her teeth in an attempt to appear as normal as she can. And she slowly, so slowly dips her head to the warrior to not cause more dizziness.

Her icy gaze meets Delah’s, and she takes the words with stride. “It’s no wonder you’re the Guardian.” She tells Delah with humor in her breathless voice. “I look forward to the next trial.” She offers with a surprising amount of ease. And in that time, she will train and practice and fight, becoming better and stronger, to attain the tools necessary to become something. But there’s something within her that softens it’s hardened, jagged edges, at Delah’s admission. Her heart is right. And despite the twitch in her hands, she can feel it too.

She looks up with Delah to the crowd as the woman laughs with joy, and the Harpy can’t help but swallow the bitterness about her clothes and her body, scanning the crowd once more as they cheer for their Guardian. And Kiada smiles through slightly blood tinged teeth with them.
