Loren
not afraid to use every trick in the book

Loren had offered to open up the Manor to those who might need it in Deepfrost. It had been the right thing to do, the only thing to do, and maybe, just maybe, it would help salvage both his family and his own reputation. The Launceleyns—and this Launceleyn in particular—had a lot of work to do in order to rebuild broken trust. Plus, people were in danger, and he could not stand idly by when there was something he could contribute.

Unfortunately, the cold season was almost upon them, and he hadn’t quite reckoned with what housing a bunch of people would entail. Seeing as Loren had never been the head of the house, he’d never really concerned himself with learning what a house full of people needed. But the role had been unfortunately dumped on his entirely incapable lap, and then he’d gone and made it all worse by opening his doors. Still, there was time to fix it so long as he moved quickly.

After asking around, he’d heard from the hunters that more deer than usual had been spotted in the area. While the librarian obviously wasn’t a hunter himself (and it was more than obvious that he was floundering and way out of his depth here) all signs pointed to their being a herd in the area. He’d thanked the hunters, then gone off to make preparations. Obviously he’d need help with this—only an idiot wouldn’t have realized this—so he’d marched off to the Notice Board and posted a note.

That done—and invitation given for the season, as well—Loren hurried home. He had his own gear to gather if he was going to be going on a hunt tomorrow. Making sure to get a good night’s sleep, he woke before the sun rose (his days as a farmer still left him with some gifts, apparently), and made his way out to the woodlands, large and mostly empty pack on his bag.

He has not hunted in awhile, at least not for food. And when he sees the notice board listing, he figures he could likely lend a hand — however rusty it may be. He doesn’t know much about Longnight, aside from what he’s been told of it through Phoebe, but it sounds rough —sounds brutal, sounds like they will need all the help they can get. And while he wasn’t on good terms for Phoebe, he is on good enough terms with everyone else. So he packs the things he needs, a couple of knives, a bow and arrow (a sad replacement to once having a gun for such things) and slips from the door of the Devil’s Advocates.

He might be a devil, but he can do good work too.

Bright and early, his steel eyes adjust to the light at the meeting location, finding a man already standing there. Bow and arrows slung on his shoulder, knives on his person, and an empty bag as well, adorns him as he moves to greet the man. He can tell Loren is likely here for it too, based off the things he brings with him, and he gives him a charming smile of greeting before he introduces himself. “Hey, I’m Sunjata. Here to help for the hunt if you’ll have me?

Ashe
With Deepfrost comes hunger, something this wolf knew very well. She hunted on her own often enough, for herself and for her family, but the posting had tugged at something in the once-assassin's chest. A chance to help in a way that wouldn't draw attention, in a way she knew she could do well.

She traversed the woods she knew so well in her tattered blue cloak with only her typical weapons - knives and knives and knives, her sword left home. Her steps were ever silent, her senses sharpened, following the scent train left behind by the Launcelyn that posted the noticed. She had her misgivings there, but if she had learned anything in her talks with Jigano.. it was to keep an open mind.

There was one man already there with Loren, someone she didn't recognize. Internally she bristled, all those prickles of paranoia spidering up her back, but she made herself take a breath, made herself slant a crooked grin up at each of them. "Ashe," she introduced, and then nodded to Loren. "I'm always good for a hunt." She would shift when it was time, but for now, she knew that Loren was no attuned, and she had no idea about Sunjata. She figured she'd at least communicate for a few minutes.

Loren
not afraid to use every trick in the book

For a while Loren was worried that no one would answer his call. It wouldn’t have been that surprising: the Launceleyns weren’t popular in the Hollowed Grounds at the moment and the summoner was a completely unknown quantity. However, when an unfamiliar man showed up, Loren felt relief course through him. It helped that the summoner could clearly see the arrival had the appropriate gear for the task at hand; even if Loren wasn’t much of a hunter, it was obvious the other man was. Giving Sunjata a grateful smile, the Launceleyn inclined his head. ”I’ll definitely have you. In fact, before you got here I was concerned it would be just me. I’m Loren. It’s nice to meet you Sunjata” The summoner held out his hand for the other man.

Then Ashetta arrived, and Loren gave her a wary look. The Assassin in Blue was an unknown quantity in her own way, especially now, with a full year behind her that Loren knew nothing about. However, she was definitely skilled and he couldn’t afford to turn away help, no matter the source. Besides, she’d done nothing to him, and he of all people knew better than to rely on rumors and gossip. ”Thanks for coming Ashe.” He made sure to sink true gratitude into his voice. Then he eyed his two companions as the Launceleyn pondered how best to proceed.

Sighing, he ran a nervous hand through his hair. There was no use pretending to be an expert in this field. ”Look, I’m not much of a hunter. So if one of you wants to take point on this, I think that’d be wise. All I know is that the hunters spotted a herd of deer in the woods, so I was hoping to gather as much meat before the snows came as possible. So I guess my only suggestion is that we go look for tracks?” Giving them both an embarrassed smile, he turned to start walking into the woods, eyes peeled for anything that might resemble a track or a hoofprint. He’s not really sure what he’s looking for; he just knew that he had to look for something.

The other man seems receptive, if not a small amount relieved at his approach, and Sunjata stands up a small amount straighter. “Same to you.” He says easily, pleasantries aside, shaking Loren’s hand in greeting before another approaches. His steel gaze slides over to her as he shuffles the bow on his shoulder, giving her a nod in response to her crooked grin. He inclines his head to her in greeting as well, committing the name to memory. “Sunjata.” He offers in case she’s missed it.

But his attention is drawn back to Loren as he admits he’s not much of a hunter – something Sunjata has a small amount more experience with, albeit with people rather than animals, but it couldn’t be that different, could it? Still, he’s not cocky enough to interject himself into it, glancing over to Ashe with a light shrug. “I’m more of a soldier myself, but I have some experience.” He says by means of letting her know if she had more and wanted to take the mantel, he wasn’t going to stop her.

Regardless of it, he sets off in a slightly different direction from Loren, searching for anything from hoofprints to oddly broken tree branches. Sliding the bow off his shoulder to prep it with an arrow, he searches for anything and everything all the same.

Ashe
(4)

Like Sunjata, most of Ashe's experience in hunting strayed toward the human variety. But she had plenty of animal kills under her belt, hunting on the road between contracts giving her background with the bow and traps, and her ravenous appetite since taking on the wolf spurred the rest.

It was hearing that Sunjata was a soldier that narrowed her eyes, turning her head to take a closer look at him. Loren, she knew, was formidable with magic. So far he seemed harmless enough, but she knew better than to trust that from a Launcelyn. An entire little faction of them had lived in Northaven in secret for over a year - their skills in deception were not something to trifle with. She knew that about the Launcelyns, but this man...

Her eyes were perhaps a touch sharper, a predator sizing up another, but she flashed him a smile, sharp canines peeking through before she turned ahead. "Hunting is hunting," she said. "Keep an eye out for broken branches, tufts of fur, things like that too." Then shifted just after the other two set off.

The black wolf shook out her pelt as four paws stretched into the earth, breathing in a deep lungful of cold air before she straightened. Her golden eyes were brighter as she straightened, ears swiveling to listen, her nostrils flaring gently as she lifted her nose to the air. She moved into the brush, dropping her head down to see what she might find in the dirt - tracks, a scent, any sign that prey had passed through.

Loren
not afraid to use every trick in the book

Luckily, at least one of them had experience with hunting. Loren was more than willing to let Ashetta take the lead, especially after she shifted into a wolf. His eyes widened at that: apparently the Assassin in Blue had learned a few tricks while Loren was away. Still, it would presumably help them in the hunt, so instead of commenting on it the Launceleyn simply set off at a slight distance away from his two companions. He made sure to put Sunjata between himself and the woman, not because he disliked her, but because he didn’t want to get in her way. As far as he was concerned, he was more hinderance than help.

Despite the lightning mage’s claims that hunting was hunting, hilariously enough it was the two men who stumbled upon signs of the deers’ passing first. Perhaps they’d gotten lucky, since, at least in the summoner’s case, skill had nothing to do with it. Sunjata would spy a tuft of fur on a low hanging branch and, if he looked closely, would find broken branches and trampled leaves. Loren, for his part, would spot a hoof print, and, a short distance ahead of it, more tracks. Immediately he angled himself to follow the trail, and if Sunjata did the same the two men’s paths would converge. Seeing as there was no sign of Ashetta, the Launceleyn glanced around for her.

Spotting her fur—which was hard to see in the woods, even during Leafchange—he called out in a low voice. ”Ashe, over here.” Hopefully she’d join Loren, as would Sunjata, but either way the Launceleyn would forge ahead.

Now that they’ve found the trail, they have to see if they can follow it through the woods. Please post a whole number between 1 and 7 at the top of your next reply. No post order!

It’s not lost on him, the sharp gaze the woman gives him. But he doesn’t comment on it – instead, giving her a bright smile in return, far less fanged than she, but almost as if to say I get it, before he sets off, seeing her shift with a small amount of surprise and wonder. Caido had yet to cease amazing him, when it came to people’s capabilities, and he was still a stranger to a majority of it. But he trudges on, pushing it past his mind as he focused on seeking out tracks.

But there, he spots a tuft of fur, and approaches it on low feet, examining it while it hung on the branch. Following his gaze down he noticed a splattering of trampled leaves, lifting himself up fully to follow and drawing his bow in an easily comfortable manner. Much to his surprise, the two men converged, and he gives a slight nod to Loren, pointing his bow away from him as he glances around, searching for Ashe as well when Loren calls out for it.

Yet, he follows Loren onto the path, following the trail in the hopes it might work out in the end.

The direction she'd chosen had been wrong. She sniffed carefully, catching hints and ghosts of scents on the breeze, but nothing definitive, no trail to follow. It was only the first few minutes of the hunt however, and she was not so easily discouraged. She had spent whole days searching for game before, so when Loren was the one to call out, the least experienced of the three, she picked up her head in surprise.

Her ear flicked, and she let out a small huff of a bark in acknowledgement before she turned to head toward them. She picked her way through the underbrush on nimble paws, coming around a tree and ending up at Sunjata's hip. The fur of her shoulder brushed him as she leaned her nose down close to the ground, sniffing deeply at the tracks and filling her senses with her prey.

Golden eyes turned up to Sunjata and then Loren, huffing sharply before looking ahead with ears pinned forward. Her very blood coursed with the thrill of what was to come, anticipating the chase, the gnashing of her jaws, the triumph of sinking her teeth in.

Despite the fact that Loren had been able to find the trail, he proved completely unable to follow it. As soon as he moved past the initial hoof prints, he couldn’t see any sign of the herd or their passage. Frustrated, he stood there for just a moment before noticing that his companions pressed on; whether or not they were following traces of the deer or not, he trailed behind, trusting in their superior skills to move the hunt forward.

It was good that he did, because both Sunjata and Ashe would find more and more signs as they went along. Indeed, the trail widened, and there were more broken branches, disturbed undergrowth, and tufts of fur as they went along. They were certainly on the right track.

And then the path opened onto a clearing, and there they were: a full herd of deer. Thankfully, the hunters had come in upwind of the deer, so they had some time to plan out their strategy. There were stags scattered around the edges, while closer to the center the does and fawns grazed. The closest stag looked particularly healthy, but the ones on either side of it were older and slightly past their prime. The hunters had at least a bit of time before they were noticed, but it remained to be seen whether they could coordinate their efforts.

The scent of the deer was tantalizing and mouth-watering, her energy shifting steadily into anticipation, excitement as she and Sunjata lead their small hunting party onward. Her ear flicked back now and then, listening to be sure Loren was following. Her shoulder would brush against Sunjata's leg when she spotted something new, her attention held firmly by the trail ahead.

A wide clearing could be seen ahead, the scent overpowering now. The black wolf lowered herself closer to the ground, her steps infinitely more careful as she crouched between the two men. She suppressed her growl of frustration, wishing she could just fucking talk to them like she could with other attuned. Instead she silently shifted, still crouched low, and she held herself perfectly still until she vanished entirely.

"If you can hit one of the big old stags, soldier, if he isn't downed right then, he'll be easier to section off from the heard when they run," she whispered to Sunjata, her voice hardly even there as she maintained her strange invisibility. "They won't protect another buck, especially a wounded one, and then he can be run down. They'll be concerned with themselves, the herd. Just make sure I know which one I'm running down." She still didn't move, and would wait for the exact right moment to shift for the chase - if one was indeed needed. "How would you feel about summoning a few extra wolves, Loren?"

The path opens, and suddenly there’s a clearing of a full herd of deer. His brow lifts slightly, but he lowers himself – cursing internally at his height in comparison, steel eyes lingering on the herd as a small amount of surprise crosses him as Ashe brushes up against him. He doesn’t react, instead, his eyes don’t leave the herd of deer. It only surprises him more when Ashe shifts again, back into herself, crouched between the two men, and he listens to her suggestion.

Yet he bristles slightly at soldier, he does it best to push it aside as he focuses on it – a curt, short nod as he draws his bow, focusing on the buck to the left. He lets Ashe lay the ideas down, suggestion to Loren before he focuses again, pulling the bowstring back. “On the left.” He whispers to Ashe and Loren, focusing on the buck and letting his arrow fly. Gods how he wished he had a gun, it would be just that much easier. Hopefully he wasn’t as rusty with the bow as he thinks he is.

Loren
not afraid to use every trick in the book

Ashetta took the lead, for which Loren was grateful. He certainly wasn’t going to be able to give them instructions on how to best winnow the herd or which targets were the best options. As the lightning mage gave Sunjata his instructions, the summoner just waited patiently to hear what he could do to assist with the hunt.

Thankfully, Ashe’s suggestion was both welcome and easy to fulfill. Rather than answering her directly, Loren just called upon his magic. Two wolves, completely identical to Ashe’s shift in every observable way (because the Launceleyn’s magic was mostly imagination based and it had been on his mind) appeared, one on either side of him. When Sunjata mentioned he was going to go after the stag to the left, Loren nodded, then eyed the two other stags nearest to them. The closest deer appeared to be in his prime, from what little the Launceleyn knew, so he focused on the one on the right instead. Perhaps it would’ve made more sense to throw everything they had at one option, but they were trying to bring back as much meat as possible before Deepfrost, and this maximized their chances of that. So as the arrow flew, he ordered his wolves to go charging forward; unlike real animals, he didn’t have to worry much about them getting injured.

The arrow flew true, burying itself in the side of the stag on the left. It let out a panicked bleat and staggered a few steps, though it was clear it wasn’t getting far. Loren’s wolves, for their part, leapt onto their target and it collapsed under a flurry of claws and fangs. The rest of the herd, including the lead stag, didn’t waste a beat. They stampeded off and in the blink of an eye were gone, leaving their injured members behind. Loren smiled at their success, then glanced at Ashe for further instructions on the off chance she wanted to give them. The Launceleyn knew how to butcher and skin an animal from his five years as a farmer, and had the tools to do it in his pack, so he walked into the clearing and got down to the bloody work. If Ashe and Sunjata wanted to assist him, he had spare blades.

For a bunch of strangers, he thinks they’ve made a good team. His arrow flies, and his heart nearly stops as he watches it soar in the air. He doesn’t even break his slate eyes from it to watch the summoned wolves – instead, watching in what feels like slow motion until it hits with an audible sound, and he internally preens. He’s still got it, even without a gun in his hand. A grin crosses his face as he watches it, the rest of the herd dispersing and leaving the one he had shot and the one Loren had focused on.

When all was said and done, Sunjata approaches as Loren begins to work toward fixing up the meat to bring it back. Slinging the arrow over his shoulder, he pulls the arrow from the buck he had shot, and does his best to clean the pointed tip before he sets it back in the quiver of his. He returns to Loren, offering his help for skinning. He knew little of butchering, but he knew how to skin. Whatever that said about him, he wasn’t sure, but it at least made him useful.

And once he has a blade in hand, he gets to work.
