A fire blazed hot inside the house, and Kalt went outside. Longnight was approaching for the second time since they had come to Cairo, and he was soaking in all of the time outside that he could. Though, admittedly, he was getting restless in their house. Staying in the same place in the middle of the settlement around everyone else… It wasn’t exactly ideal, and he decided to bring it up to Ashe when the weather started warming again.

Hauling himself easily onto the roof of the house, Kalt settled, dusting the snow from the place where he sat. He blew into the air, his breath clouding in front of his face, as he grinned with a child-like amusement. The science behind it was simple, but that didn’t mean it wasn’t entertaining.

Kalt laid back on the roof, his eyes closed with his hands behind his head. His knees were bent, rather than extended straight like they usually would have been, as the roof was slick this time of year. The last thing he needed was his relaxation to be interrupted by an abrupt fall. Although it would've been funny to anyone who happened by. Then again, not many people ventured out at night during deepfrost. They were probably smart not to do so, but his survival instincts were high, so laying on his roof didn’t seem like such a big risk.

He sighed a long breath, pushing himself to once again sit up. He eyed Kysma in the paddock behind the house, and she tossed her mane, snorting at the snow, making a short chuckle escape him. He pulled a small flask from his pocket, tipping it back for a small sip. Had to have some way to keep warm in the frigid nights.

His eyes drifted momentarily to his right hand, entirely bare for the first time in years. He wasn’t wearing gloves simply because he was expecting Ashe to join him any minute, but his ring was also absent. It left him with a particular kind of naked feeling, but strangely content. Not like it was lost; just in his pocket. He didn’t want to wear it tonight...

She was reluctant to get up at first. Ashe lay in the small, comfortable bed in the room across from her own, her arm draped over the softly sleeping form of Theea. She rested with her nose against the little girl's hair, her finger still gently stroking over her brow. She had fallen asleep a while ago, but she had stayed. She told herself it was because she had to be there to be sure she didn't wake with nightmares, ones of the storms.

Eventually, the heat of the fire in the other room made it hot enough for the slumbering, living furnace in Ashe's arms to push away, grumbling softly without waking. She left the girl be after that, and walking through the silent house and rubbing feeling back into the arm Theea's head had been on. An ever present tug within told her where to find Kalt, and wrapping herself in her cloak, she left the shudders open a crack behind her as she clambered up onto the roof.

Her breath clouded in front of her as she hauled herself up, finding Kalt sitting with his back to her. She paused, crouching in the snow at the peak of their roof and looked across at him, smiling crookedly. "It's fucking cold," she complained as she rose to walk her way across the slippery roof, her feet nimble and sure as she balanced her way to him. Her hand slipped over his shoulder, brushing her chilled fingers under his collar and over the back of his warm neck with an amused glint in her eye, as if to prove a point.

She glanced down to the paddock where Kysma played, and her chest tightened. Percy was here somewhere in the Hallowed Grounds, but he had outright avoided her these weeks in her return, and she'd yet to find him. He was a proud stallion, and no doubt felt abandoned by the rider he'd chosen to trust and bond with. Her eyes moved up toward the sky, promising herself she'd search for him again in the morning.

"I didn't realize that I missed seeing the sky until I made it back," she said absently, her eyes dancing over the stars, reflexively going to Vanya's, and the space where Ronin had been beside her.

A slow smile pulled at his lips, as he heard her approaching from behind him. A huff of a laugh clouded in the air at her complaint, but he didn’t comment. Granted, he didn’t exactly expect her icy fingers to slip beneath his collar. “Fucker,” he bitched sharply, flashing a grin to her.

He tended to run unusually warm, while Ashe got cold far too easily. He didn’t know why, but he was absolutely fine walking shirtless through a gods-damned blizzard. Not like he hadn’t done it before! Then again, at the time, he was also bleeding from the chest with his hands bound after being tortured by a gang of mercenaries. It seemed like a distant memory of a past life now…

Kalt unfastened his tunic and slipped it off, wrapping it around her small frame, as her eyes drifted upward. His gaze lingered on her a moment longer, his arm around her, magic bringing heat to the fabric now around her.

Raven hair collected white snowflakes, and he pulled her closer, touching a kiss to her hair. “Marry me,” he whispered.

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a white metal ring with a perfectly formed moonstone, elk antlers securing the stone to the band. He would slip it onto her finger, the band magically adjusting to her finger from his own.

He would miss the ring, sure. It was the only thing he knew of where he came from… It was his only link to his past...but she was his future.

Her eyes stayed on the stars as she slowly lowered herself to sit beside Kalt. A year later, and she felt like she was still learning this new sky. It had become familiar, but it was still strange to think that she had lived under three different skies full of stars. Were they different in every world? Were some burning plumes of fire while others were glittering crystals refracting light? Were they all souls, like Ronin had been, like Aoife's mother was? A tapestry woven by Safrin, perhaps. Clouds drifted across them now, rolling in with the late night, frozen breeze.

She didn't look down until Kalt bundled her into him with his tunic, and she settled against him with a content sigh. She was afraid. Things were worse than bleak in Caido, and while Vi's roses gave her hope, she was afraid. But right then in that moment, she could be content. She breathed in his scent as the tunic warmed over her, but it was his warmth she was enamoured with, without it for too long.

For a moment, they were in a sprawling city, the night glow of the streets below and their clouded breath rising into the stars. It didn't matter what rooftop. They spent most nights at the top of the Keep, but anywhere in the city would always do. The sound of Kysma below was a firm reminder, however. That life wasn't theirs anymore, thank the gods, and it never had to be again.

"Marry me," Kalt whispered against her hair as snow started to fall.

It didn't register at first, what he'd just said. She glanced up at him, her brows pulling together, about to ask him what the fuck he meant, because there was no way he meant that literally. Playing with words, making jabs, some bizarre opener to one of his out-of-nowhere tangents on what had recently (as in the last ten minutes) caught his attention...

Ashe couldn't get the words out. For deep in her soul, radiating down the bond, she felt it. Her heart thudded hard in her chest, and she looked down as he took her hand, effortlessly slipping on and fitting a ring that had her breath catching in her chest. She stared at it in silent shock, the moonstone gleaming as snowflakes fell around them.

"Kalt," she breathed, surprised to find her lip trembling, her eyes prickling. They were never even supposed to be together. All their years together and apart, they were never allowed to, she never dared to dream of a real life together. Now they were here. The knew the truths of their lives, they had their daughter back, they were bonded soul mates. And he was asking her to marry him.

She turned wide eyes up at him, wearing a small, dazed sort of smile, not unlike the one she had given him when he accepted the soul bond. "Yeah," she said, her voice shakey and carrying a disbelieving laugh with it. "Yeah, I'll fucking marry you."

He gazed at the ring on her finger, a content sort of smile worn, as he brought his eyes up to meet hers. There was a moment of silence that seemed to stretch on and on forever, but there wasn’t the slightest hint of anxiety or nerves trembling in him.

It almost was amusing to him, watching her process exactly what had just been asked of her. He knew her well...better than well, even without the rings that bound two souls as one. He didn’t need the rings to see the disbelief and near confusion that her ever expressive face gave away.

Even as she looked away from him to the ring he created, his eyes remained on her. He watched every slight change in her face, memorized the moment that he was genuinely able to surprise her in such a way. It wasn’t often that they caught each other by surprise, both having been trained to avoid exactly that, but the times where they did, it was usually in the form of a childish prank or a spur of the moment training session. Rarely was it the kind of surprise where he was able to stop her in her tracks like she seemed to be now.

It was true that they were never supposed to have a future, that they should have lived and died in the darkness of the Guild. When they were trapped within the walls of the Keep, they managed to find hope and love in each other. When they got out, though times were dark for too long, they were now sitting under the stars together with their daughter sleeping in the house below.

He flashed a crooked smile at her wide-eyed acceptance, his fingers burying into her hair, as he met her lips with a deep, slow passion. He was having trouble finding anything actually wrong with the world at the moment.

His thumb rasped gently over her jaw, as he finally parted from her. Kalt remained close to her, his brow lightly touching hers. “I love you,” he whispered down the bond. He pulled back enough to find her eyes, moving her hair behind her pointed ear.

“Savor what I’m about to say because you’ll never hear it again…” He took a deep breath and nodded. “You’re right.” Flashing her a grin, Kalt moved to take her hand and press a kiss to it. “It’s fucking cold. Come on. There’s a fire, and if Theea didn’t sneak them, a few pastries left from the morning.” Not to mention he was pretty much done as soon as he felt his fingers numbing.

If she had asked it of him, they wouldn’t have moved from the rooftop all night. However, she turned into an icicle when a breeze went by, so he had a hunch the fire would be a welcomed thought.

In a strange way, this changed nothing. They had known each other since childhood. They had shared in pain, joy, sorrow, stress… They conquered some of the darkest depths of existence and come out together. It was the next step, but it was almost expected, wasn’t it? Two people love each other, they get married. They had given each other their souls, bared everything to each other. The only thing that will change in this event...technically…is her name. That in itself instilled a certain unexpected pride in him.

He kissed her openly and deeply until she forgot that she needed anything like air. She moved into him, reaching up to take his collar in his hands, as if to keep him close. She forgot that she was cold even as snowflakes touched down on their cheeks, forgot that the world was dark outside of this moment. Her head was spinning when he finally parted their lips, and she smiled with a sigh. I love you, she murmured back.

Then she barked a laugh, shaking her head before she shoved her hand gently into his chest. ”I’m always right,” she snarked and then nodded as she pulled back to rise to her feet. ”And I’ll stick snow down her back if she ate them all.”

The house was warm as she swung herself down through the open window, and as soon as Kalt was in, she shut the cold out behind him. There was a wordless request to him down the bond to check on Theea, knowing she was alright and needing the assurance anyways. She stoked the fire, the orange light gleaming through the moonstone ring that fit seamlessly with the one of their bond. She straightened and leaned the fire poker against the hearth, staring down at it.

It wasn’t a declaration of forever - they already had that. There was no wiggle room for doubt in the eternities of love between them. This was a statement of their freedom. Their chains had finally, truly been broken for over a year now, and they were safe enough to do this, they were allowed to have this with each other.

Deciding the chair was too far from the fire, Ashe sat herself down on the soft and thick rug just in front of it, stretching into the warmth as she bundled herself in her sweater. Get your ass in here, I’m cold, she thought in a half growl. The fire was warm, but her mate was warmer. She was reminded of blizzard nights in the Keep, lounging before a fire with him in her room, reading poetry, eating whatever they had just stolen from the kitchens.

Kalt laughed quietly as he followed Ashe into the house through the window - like totally normal people - and his hand brushed over her waist when she closed the window after him. He was glad that the fire was roaring because the Deepfrost nights were unbelievably cold. Definitely more so than anywhere in Northwind.

Feeling the silent request from Ashe, he didn’t bothering denying it. He knew that Theea was safe. He basically hadn’t let the little girl out of his sight since they got back home, nor did he have any plans to do so, but he didn’t feel the need to check on her every few minutes. Ashe, however, thought she lost her for the second time. If it would put her mind at ease, Kalt had no problem checking on her.

He opened the girl’s door and walked inside, smiling softly at the mess of raven locks on her pillow. Kalt walked on silent steps into the room, until he reached her bed. Leaning over, he gently moved her hair away from her face. She wasn’t the heaviest sleeper, which was a pain in the ass when she was very little, but he had gotten used to it, so he didn’t tend to disturb her at all when she was asleep.

Hearing Ashe call him back, Kalt rolled his eyes with a half-smirk, finally parting from the girl and closing the door behind him. Well, you’ll just have to wait, he responded, walking past the living room into the kitchen. He wasn’t kidding when he brought up the pastries. They wouldn’t stay good forever, and why not indulge a bit?

Finally, he walked over to the fire with an oven tray in hand, setting it up in front of the fire with a large, fruit-filled pastry on it to warm up. He looked over his shoulder at Ashe and grinned at her all bundled in front of the fire. “I’m gonna fucking roll you in the rug if you’re that cold,” he muttered.

Kalt settled behind Ashe, his arms encompassing her and holding her firmly against him, his lips brushing over her neck. It was amazing how much had changed since the Guild - tonight being the one that actually told them they were done, they were free. It was a milestone neither truly thought they would reach. And yet, so much was exactly the same. The only thing that had actually changed between them was that they no longer had to hide themselves from anyone.

She wrapped her arms around her legs and looked over her shoulder, as he bypassed the livingroom entirely, and she frowned. You’re only forgiven because you’re bringing me food, she said lightly back. And good food at that. While she tended to lean more toward chocolate and other overly sweetened varieties of treats, she couldn’t say no to a fruit filled pastry in the middle of Deepfrost. Fruit was a waning commodity.

She tracked him as he placed it over the fire and took his place just behind her, and she wrinkled her nose back at him. ”Make sure you warm up the rug first.” He settled behind her, and she lay back into him with a sigh when his arms closed around her. His lips touched the sensitive skin of her throat, and she was hyper aware of his touch and his breath.

The firewood popped and crackled, and she reached forward with her own magic, well within her range. Ashe leaned her head back against his shoulder as she felt the heat of him around her, and the heat of the fire within her magic and soul. It flared a little brighter, a little hotter, and she glanced down to the elk-and-moonstone ring on her finger again as it caught in the firelight. She had changed so much since leaving the Guild, but this, them... they were the same, even after all their time apart.

Ashe rested her hands over Kalt's arm, her fingers moving absently over small scars -- hits and near misses, the sort of scars that silvered every warrior's body. "I went and saw the midwife after I got back," she said, quite out of the blue.

She bit her lip and suddenly regret it, unsure of why she was even bringing it up. She settled closer against him, keeping her eyes on the fire as it popped with a shower of sparks into the chimney. "I hadn't, uh… had my monthly. Not since before you disappeared." Her heart raced for a moment, and sent a ripple of confirmation down their bond that she wasn't, clearly as Phoebe had pointed out. She was too small for a pregnancy to go unnoticed. She intentionally kept her tone lighter, as if it hadn't been a terrifying, confusing evening. "Turns out I panicked for nothing, and I'm just malnourished."
