what do you do
Last winter’s Long Night had been an experience; one blunt, sharp, and keen due to their ignorance, ineptitude, and inability to listen to those wiser. The unknown had sneered razor smiles and snickers at them, beckoned closer and closer until some were caught, snared, and trapped within its treacherous vortex, damned and doomed with the rest of them. It had been suffering, it had been cruelty, and it had been a befuddling spell of danger, some easily avoided and vanquished. This year, they were determined to counteract the probabilities of disaster – humans would be humans, mortals would be mortals, and they couldn’t cease and desist actions immersed in ineffectual natures – but they could certainly try. If it saved one life, the efforts would be worth it.

Deimos arrived at the Monster Hunter’s Guild along the intertwining of dawn, still black, still hollow, the sunrise not yet peeking over the horizon, bag of holding full of necessary tools and supplies. His intentions were to further reinforce what was already in place – and though he’d to the hall before, when they’d utilized the training grounds out back, upon opening the door, he was further impressed with the features – eyes scrutinizing, studying, and pleased. Ronin and his cohorts had done well. Now they just had to regard them in a different aspect, prepare for a multitude of individuals, and how to guard them all within and along the perimeter. The General had a plan in place, and hopefully, with assistance (especially after pinning messages to the Notice Board; courtesy of Loren), they’d have enough inhabitants willing to assist. Time was of the essence.

By the time the sun had finally risen, he was more than ready to greet those coming to help, and proceed with their tasks.

With Ronin busy with kingly duties (as well as finding his way back to full strength after being blighted), much of the recent prep-work had fallen to Remi. However with the instructions from above that one of the LongNight places of safety was meant to be the guild house, the alchemist found himself busier than ever. So it was that when Deimos offered to lead the majority of the fortifications, Remi agreed with a joyful but weary willingness.

"Thank you for helping with this." Remi said, appearing behind Deimos with a boyish smile. Dressed simply and ready to work, the alchemist brought no supplies with him. He knew where everything was and could create anything else they might need.

Jigano was not, as usual, entirely sure where he would be staying for Long Night, but he and Kiada had a promise to keep, a mission to undertake together, and he would not abandon her again. They were learning to work together, for soon their lives would depend on each other, and where she went, so would he. Then, too, there was the tentative plans he and Ronin had made in the summer heat, before the darkness had fallen upon them all. Though he might wish to remain in the Temple to help the Healers for Long Night, this year he would likely be among the Hunters instead.

So it was that he found his way to the Monster Hunter's Guild, looking better than he had in a season. His hands still shook but he was stronger after a few weeks of rest and proper eating, and his eyes were clearer. He brought with him a small bag slung over his shoulder, one that bounced lightly against his back, and when he let it fall to the ground beside the door it landed with a soft whoomph and settled slowly. He nodded to Deimos, never certain where he stood with the stoic General. "I didn't have time to gather much yesterday, but I brought some snow moss to help." it might have been a peace offering, it might have just been an attempt to protect those who would be in the Hall during Long Night, or it might have been a gift meant in good faith. For once the bard didn't expound in detail, leaving Deimos to decide how he wanted to take it.

He did find a small, tentative smile for Remi, though, having only the vaguest recollection of the manticore at the Spire during his blighted time and not sure if he had done anything to hurt the young man as he had Ianto and Bastien. "How is the family?" It held a wealth of question in the words, most especially how Ronin was recovering and how Remi was feeling, but just seeing the alchemist's boyish smile again was an unexpected relief

Amun had seen the notice. Seeing as the Ascended had absolutely no idea what this LongNight business was, he figured he should probably go find out. While hard work did not seem all that appealing to the potter, he figured that he could just pick up something and pretend to work for a while, and listen in on the latest gossip. Besides, seeing as he was still new around these parts, he figured pitching in and getting a good reputation for himself might be helpful. And if he could check out the locals while he worked, so much the better; they were an odd bunch, over all, and he hadn’t exactly figured out how he might fit in around here.

Seeing as he burned up in the sunlight, he’d gotten to the guildhall very, very early, before the sun had gotten a chance to start shining. He’d picked a convenient shadow, and as soon as the guild had opened, he’d slipped inside to lurk and watch a bit. However, when enough people had gathered, he decided he should probably make his presence known. Sauntering up, he grinned widely at the assembly. ”Well, this must be my lucky day. A bunch of handsome, strong men doing manual labor? Sign me up.” Amun winked at the fellow who seemed to be in charge of the proceedings, before leaning against a nearby wall in what he hoped was a fetching pose. While he wasn’t expecting a response, a little bit of harmless flirting never hurt.

if tomorrow brings new hope, i hope it brings you
Amalia arrives early in the company of Deimos, a collection of her own fortifications in tow. Though she lacks any real ability to construct or create, she likes to hope this inadequacy is supplemented by knowledge: she is the only Natural in their small assembly, the only one to have survived more than one Long Night before. More than that, she is armed with a collection of baked goods: biscuits, bread, crackers, cookies, enough to last for the week of Long Night without growing inedible with time. For days she has been working, throwing herself into the task of creating edible munitions. What else can she do, what else can she contribute, as everything feels like a looming catastrophe?

Sitting at a table in the corner, the Shield watches as others arrive, Jyoti trilling at each in turn and seeking out attention and affection from them all. It is strange, she thinks: a year ago she would have known none here, and now she can count the entire group among her friends, and even dearest. A year ago she had nearly no one, and now she has a family. Amun aside, there are many she loves here, and she smiles quietly at each in turn. Jigano, still a little haggard but warming every day; Kiada, as dear as a sibling or child, a fierce creature she yearns to protect with every fiber of her being; Remi, the unexpected companion, fractured yet stronger than she could ever be; and Deimos, Deimos, her lover, her general, humble and mighty, stalwart and brave.

Together, she thinks, they will be ready. This year will be different. This year will be safer.

This year she will not be alone.

KIADA
your battleworn tongue doesn't say the truth anymore
that you are ruined
Now that she was better, and fine, when she finds out about Longnight preparations, she agrees to help. After all, she wonders if anyone else has suffered as much as she over that night, and lived to talk about it. First, Ru’in had died because nobody had let him into the Rathskeller. Second, she hadn’t even been there, because she was out getting Auni – the little Luxere that had killed poor Isla, that had brought her and Caiside home to the Rathskeller safely.

And as it turns out, she’s going to need to leave again. A vow made to Ludo. A vow she cannot and will not break.

So she goes with Amalia and Deimos to the Monster Hunter’s Guild, flying high above in the clouds in her vulture form, feathers flickering with the cold winds of the world around them. And she’s so content with the snow, it almost hurts when she has to land. But Auni approaches out of seemingly nowhere, trilling a bay of a sound toward Jyoti in greeting as she nears. And when Kiada lands, she lands and shifts immediately, into furs and leathers and warmth – healing well from the blight that had taken the fat and muscle from her bones.

She goes near Remi first, offering him a gentle smile of greeting – apologetic. “Sorry about the Spire.” She says softly, for his ears only, hoping despite the quietness of the words that the feeling is still very much there. She’s sorry for attacking him during the Spire, but she hadn’t really much of a choice in the end, while the blight reigned control. As she turns back to join Deimos and Amalia, she gives a small wave of greeting to Jigano before she settles in and focuses her iceberg gaze on Deimos once more.

Waiting for instruction.

what do you do
They came together quickly, efficiently, a press of time and necessity whittling away at their efforts, and with too many notions, too many ruminations, too many possibilities riding on these entangled, ominous variables, he was humbled, grateful, and content with those who’d appeared. “You are welcome,” he extended back to Remi, because the alchemist and King had enough on their plates, on their shoulders, and Deimos, and the rest of the company residing along these boundaries, would gladly take more weight, more efforts; it was how they’d survived. It was a necessity, to pick up and brush one another off; a sentiment he’d learned along the way.

He didn’t expect Jigano to stand before him though, proffering assistance and some snow moss previously gathered. Bewildered and stupefied for a moment, the beast stood stock still, striving to meander through calculations and endeavors, before proceeding in politeness, in more reticent tactics, but a show of good faith in a hesitant smile. “Thank you,” and he nodded, taking note of the plants, attempting to gauge how much more they’d need. It was a finite material, but maybe, if other efforts couldn’t be salvaged or reached, the moss no longer as plentiful, he or Remi could concoct something.

The only stranger in his midst came sauntering forth, out of the shadows, completely foreign and unknown. The General was baffled, momentarily, by the wink extended to him, looking and glancing over his shoulder, presuming it was meant for someone else. As for the complimentary efforts, he arched a brow, but shrugged, “Most appreciated,” on another, subtler, smaller nod was brandished, before his eyes caught on Amalia, on Kiada, on boughs and branches of family and cherished, devoted things; bigger, broader, boyish grins for them, grateful, indebted, and obliged all over again. There was an intense relief enfolded immediately in his veins at their presence - any trepidation hastened away.

And then they were all assembled – ready and eager and waiting – and the beast began, a sense of urgency pushing him forward, in the comfort and composition of so many that he knew and understood, that comprehended what they had to achieve. His voice boomed – not hesitant, not exuberant, but commanding; this wasn’t a Basin meeting, where he waited for the doom and damnation to strike. This was to keep some of the world safe. “Thank you for coming to assist in preparing the Guild for Long Night.” He grabbed hold of a list he’d been keeping in his pocket, dragging it out before him. “We have a number of tasks to get through, and I will take any and all suggestions for making them better.” Because this was for sanctuaries and sanctums, and despite his latest dealings with Loren, he could listen; open for comprehension and experiences some had dealt with, some had found, some had discovered from last year’s chaos and bedlam. “To start, we need to ensure sounds are muffled. Jigano has already brought us some snow moss, but we will likely need a great deal more.” Especially with the size of the building, and the potential for the amount of people to be contained within. He raised his bag of holding, offering it to anyone who was willing to go roam, fetch, and bring the plants back. There were other sacks available too. “I will be reinforcing windows, walls, and doors, and would like someone to assist.” While he’d already brought some lumber, he could always create more, and it’d be completed that much quicker. “We should also have some black cloth hanging over windows,” and he tilted his head to a pile of fabric he’d already created for this purpose.

“Let us know what you would like to do, and we can get started. If you need any tools at all, please come see Remi or myself.” What might’ve been the beginning of a Cheshire grin aimed towards the alchemist flickered, then he watched and waited; presuming they were capable of yielding to their preferred endeavors and efforts. There was still more to come, but with these many proficient, competent individuals, the General had no doubts they’d accomplish their goals.

"One is growing like a weed, and one naps a lot. I will leave it to you to decide which is which." Remi chuckled to Jigano. However as Amun arrived the alchemist's smile disappeared somewhat. Not that he'd include himself in handsome and strong, but it felt...strange to hear such in his own home, without Ronin around. Averting his eyes and bashfully clearing his throat, Remi turned instead to see Kiada enter, flashing the vulture a smile.

No apology needed. We will have to spar sometime so you can teach me those moves, though Remi thought with a boyish pulse of affection towards his fellow attuned, smiling brightly at her as she moved away to stand with Deimos and Amalia.

Listening to Deimos instructions to see where his skills would best be utilized, he tugged in a breath. "I can create the snow moss here, in addition to what Jigano has brought. Perhaps we can place it beneath the furniture and the floor boards?" Remi would know best what creaked, and he trusted the bard to keep to himself whatever private things he saw, or rooms he entered.

Remi volunteers himself and Jigano? for snow moss duty.

Curls of warmth, of affection and gladness at seeing them both tickled through the Attuned bond to greet Amalia and Kiada and he smiled to them with something more like his old self. A little older, a little more worn by the world, but silver still gleamed beneath the blight's tarnish, shining through with renewed determination not to waste the gift that Vi and Rae and Arduinna had given him.

He suspected Deimos was as surprised to see him as he had been to see the General at the Perch building, but the other man managed a more courteous greeting than Jigano had on that day, and the bard accepted the smile with an inclination of his head and the faintest twitch of his lips in acknowledgment that perhaps they could build something else. They had always seemed to get along best when set to a task, at least.

"At the rate he's growing, he'll soon be as tall as I am," Jigano nodded sagely to Remi , a twinkle in his eye. "But I'm glad Aoife is getting plenty of rest!" The bard, teasing the alchemist? He really must be feeling better! Amun 's flirtation only earned an arch of The Brow, however, and a faint hmmm? of curiosity at the stranger. They needed every hand they could get for Long Night preparations, though, and Jigano gave the shorter man a nod before hefting his bag again and going to join Remi. "That sounds good to me," he agreed easily. "Sam showed me how to do it last year, and I've already padded up the windows in the Infirmary and the Loreseekers Guild, so I'm in practice again."

He let Remi lead the way, content to follow the alchemist's directions in the man's home, and began stuffing his bag of moss where he was told the creakiest places were.

Alright, well, this lot was pretty dull. Amalia was a pleasant surprise, at least, and Amun shot the baker a quick grin. ”Hey kitty. Good to see you again.” Even if she wasn’t the most chipper of companions, she’d welcomed him to Caido and into her shop, and he couldn’t be too upset with her. The rest of them were strangers, and given how the leader looked confused by the potter’s flirting, the curly-haired man looked away at the Ascended’s compliment, the white-haired man arched an eyebrow at Amun’s antics, and the other woman ignored him entirely, he decided he wasn’t going to give these people his best work.

Unfortunately, the moss stuff thing (stuffing, thing? whatever) got taken right away, and he sighed. That had sounded easy. He could make a fuss about how he should probably stay away from windows and doors, what with the bursting into flames in direct sunlight, but he’d gotten quite practiced at not doing that by now. It probably wasn't worth the hassle. Besides, there were lots of shadows for him to hide in, and since he did not particularly want to hang out with the dour leader man, nor did he want to do too much labor, he decided he’d go with putting cloth around the windows.

Picking up one of the lengths of fabric, he wrapped it around himself fetchingly—though it also covered his exposed skin—and grinned at the group, making sure to show off his fangs so they knew he was Ascended and not just being a dick. Well. He was also being a dick, but hey, two birds one stone. ”I’ll be on cloth duty. With one of the lovely ladies, I suppose.” He wasn’t flirting, just trying to be charming, but he picked up half the black cloths along with a hammer and some nails, then went to the nearest window. Dropping all but one cloth, he waited for whoever his companion was, then follow their instructions. It wasn’t like he knew what he was doing here.

if tomorrow brings new hope, i hope it brings you
One by one the tasks are listed, predictable processes for preparing their fortress. Cloths on the windows, moss in the eaves, reinforced entrances- she licks her lips, a strange nostalgia coming over her as she remembers LongNights past. It will be Jyoti's first, and the starwhale still seems rather confused about the whole thing, perpetually fearless as she is. And it will be Amalia's first with Outlanders: though she spent much of the last one in the Temple, she was isolated, invalid, laid up in the infirmary and recovering from her death.

She returns Amun's smile with a slight flush, never quite sure if the man is flirting. And though she would like to work alongside Deimos, when the Ascended picks up a length of dark cloth Amalia finds herself volunteering to help him, standing up and smiling wryly at the playful man's antics. "Sorry to disappoint." Lovely ladies, indeed.

Taking her own length of cloth a well as nails and a hammer, Amalia finds a large and already reinforced window to start on, demonstrating to Amun what they hope to accomplish. "The goal is to block any light from getting out - so nobody can see that we're here, basically." The system they've always used is a simple one, a nail in each corner and enough along the length to close up any gaps. For her part the baker places the corner nails, blocking out the light and gesturing for the Ascended to finish the work now that he is safe from the sun. "Have you decided where you'll stay, during LongNight?"

Remi’s pulse of affection relieves any lingering doubts the Harpy feels when it comes to what occurred at the Spire. Giving him a nod of agreement when it comes to training with him versus their forms, something she looks forward to. Of course, and showing him her most recent feline portion! Soon, she focuses on the rest of the gathering while Deimos dishes out what they’re supposed to do, eyes following as Jigano pairs with Remi, and much to her surprise, Amalia pairs with the other man she does not recognize.

Naturally, she turns to Deimos with a grin full of mischief and delight.

There’s a slight bounce to her step as she drifts over toward the supplies, hammers and nails, imagining Deimos could likely handle the heavier things. And as she takes a handful, of the nails, she turns to head toward the windows. It reminds her somewhat of last Longnight, where Seiji had been there to help her fix her windows when they had broken and let the heat seep through, when she had returned home, broken hearted and numb.

This time, she thinks there’s hope beneath the layers of her outer exterior.

She lays out her nails, and looks over toward Deimos with a raised brow. “Want me to hold? Or should I hammer?” Her voice is soft, sweet, playful in comparison. Who knew all you needed to feel better was a little adopted dad/daughter time?

what do you do
Thankfully, they appeared to be an agreeable lot; off to their tasks, committed, so the beast was assured that he could apply to his own tasks. Permitting them time to work out who would work where, he gathered tools and supplies, starting at the first window with hammer, nails, and portions of wood in case anything required repairs. As he turned around to see who’d be adhering to the efforts with him (or if he’d be left to his own devices, not the first, nor the last time), he was pleasantly surprised to find Kiada. “I will use the hammer,” he intoned, a smirk beginning to grow on his face. “Not sure I trust your aim.” All he needed were busted hands and injured limbs, out of play and mischief and maybe some deep-rooted spite, leftover residuals from blighted whims. He could be precise, safe, and ensure he wouldn’t hurt her.

But, to no shock or bewilderment, they worked well together, sealing over windows before black cloth was applied and hung, ensuring there was strong stability and fortifications along the apertures. Once they’d trailed along the first section, Deimos grabbed ahold of a ladder, intending to reach the higher levels – leaning it against walls while Kiada spotted, taking a moment to survey how everyone else was coming along.

Unfortunately, despite the likely aptitude of Remi and Jigano combined, while they were placing moss in creaky areas, in troublesome spots, more tribulations occurred. Termites had gathered in a section of the floorboard, eating and chewing away unbeknownst to anyone else; quietly undermining the quality of the wood. How were they going to rid themselves of these treacherous pests?

Amun and Amalia, busy hanging cloth over windows, a way to hide and ensure no monsters could look in on future inhabitants, worked fairly well to begin with, draping the sable fabric so light couldn’t sink or slink its way out. Regrettably, somehow a few of the materials and textiles ripped, perhaps in haste, perhaps by misfortune, and when held up to the windows, light was visibly seen. They’d have to be replaced.

Different as they were, Remi couldn't help but laugh heartily at the Sage. "I tell you, the growing pains are the worst. As is the teething." Giving the bard a pointed look—were they at innuendos yet? time to find out—Remi just chuckled and shook his head.

As they meandered about, more and more boards began to squeak beneath them. "We...hardly use these rooms.." Remi explained a touch bashfully, rubbing at the back of his neck. Prying up a floorboard and stepping back as a number of termites scurried out, the alchemist folded his arms across his chest with a huff. "Uh huh. So I see." He muttered, glancing towards the bard. Hoping (and assuming) that Jigano wasn't squeamish, both because he was an attuned but also a far adultier-adult than Remi was, he turned towards the bard with a sigh.

"I understand that it is cold, but you really cannot be doing this." Remi groaned towards them. "How about we share the space?" So saying the alchemist closed his eyes. While he couldn't compel them all, the hope was he could compel enough of them that the rest would follow. With a glance towards Jigano, hoping the bard might be able to do the same, Remi closed his eyes again and concentrated on moving the termites to one side of the room. If successful, he'd encase the wood in a thin layer of stone giving the bugs enough to eat, but preventing them from destroying the rest of the house.
