Jigano wasn't a morning person.

The blight had done nothing to change that, but the blight lingered only in slight tremors and the faintest lingering shadows in his eyes. If they were going to do this, he wanted them to have a full day to do so, even if that meant getting up early to help Rory tend the animals and let the hunter braid his hair back for him before he left.

He waited outside the opening to the Underground, a rope tied over his shoulder and Ludo's Lantern in his hand. He had his first-aid kit, just in case, and his journal with the maps he had been making each time he had ventured down below, from his own wanderings and the hunt for Emmett to what he had been able to remember of the trip he and Amalia had made, chasing a starmote pellmell through the claustrophobic darkness. His sleeves were full of useful smaller odds and ends, and he felt as ready as he could be after Fae and Queens and Blights had prevented them from coming back for so long.

He shivered, pulling his cloak tighter in the early morning light, and Isuma chirruped encouragingly on his shoulder. He had spoken of it to Amalia, of course, as something they had been meaning to do for seasons past. By extension Deimos would know as well, and there were apologies and reparations to be made there. He had also mentioned it to Kiada, and her help and company would be welcome as always, as would her keen mind and bright wit.

This PQ is to try and find the way back towards the library Safrin uncovered for Amalia, and to explore the pit trap they found nearby with its mysterious footprints!

1. Amalia
2. Deimos
3. Kiada

Send a heartbeat to the void that cries through you
Relive the pictures that have come to pass
The last time he’d ventured into the underground, it had been to salvage and locate Emmett’s remains – when they’d been lingering in its depths for a more favorable outcome. There’d only been the slightest shock, a bewildering surprise, when he’d been asked to accompany them, but then figured it’d been presented on Amalia’s extensions, suggestions, or that he was deemed worthy, useful, to the Sage. Because there were notions of curiosity, sanctions of inquiry, a scholarly interest instead of constant upheaval and sedition nestled into the dark catacombs (and lacking the precarious weight LongNight’s endless preparations held), the beast agreed. If there were any other precarious sentiments looming over him, casting enigmatic quandaries, Deimos orchestrated no nuances of it, displayed no outward signs or displays of any pending misgivings.

Instead, along the early morning hours, used to the midnight shades of dawn, he prepared for their sojourns and crusades alongside Amalia, loading up his bag of holding with adequate supplies for both of them (and anyone else who required the provisions): enough daggers for a lifetime, rope, canteens filled with water, chalk for marking pathways and trails, and a new tinier satchels of food rations in case of some pending trials or tribulations. Nestled into furs, and jackets, he also loaded up some gloves, and then left the rest to whatever means would be necessary in the moment – where his magic could come in handy. Then, on memories of Emmett’s unfortunate demise, on the potentials of pitfalls anywhere and everywhere, Zuriel came along; her prideful look enough to make him want to roll his eyes.

So they arrived along the edges of the underground, beneath the haze of morning, and his eyes immediately went to Jigano beside the opening – form becoming more composed, more rigid, more taut and straight, features wrought into their reticent expanse, a guard, a wall, a tangible means of fortification. “Jigano,” the Sword intoned, still dignified with a nod, and stood nearby, unicorn and bag in tow.

KIADA
do not misunderstand me when i call myself a shell
i mean a used up bullet casing
If the Harpy is being honest, she doesn’t know if she’s ever really gone on an excursion like this with the other three. Sure, she had gone on that adventure with Jigano and Amalia, a few others as well – before they were captured and thrown into the Fae pit. But she was welcomed by the fae now, the Greatwood would welcome her – words from the Chief herself, and with it, she breathes a bit easier with this kind of excursion. Hopefully there weren’t people living beneath the ruins of the Underground, ready to pounce and capture once more.

This time, though, Kiada comes more prepared.

She follows Deimos, palming the slight bag at her hip, full of gifts and trinkets that Deimos has made her, as well as making room for Auni to join the gathering – finding his spot near Zuriel for a brief moment before he focuses on Isuma. The Harpy brushes past Deimos at the quiet lowly greeting, offering a bright smile of her own to the bard. “Hey Jigano.” She says lightly. There’s a small amount of excitement within her – after all, she’s finally been invited to the dangerous things that Deimos and Amalia always get wrapped up in.

Now she can keep an eye on them.

Amalia
she wants the silence but fears the solitude
she wants to be alone and together with you
Amalia raises an eyebrow in playful surprise as the quartet arrives at the Underground, her expression teasing as she tilts her head and looks up at the warmly clothed bard. "Little early for you, isn't it?" The baker for her part is accustomed to early mornings; she enjoys the hours before the dawn, when stars still linger low in the sky.

She brings with her the usual supplies: a bag with food and water, the luxere staff, a collection of other odds and ends (counting on Deimos to carry more of what they will need, the Sword as ever over-prepared). Stranger, perhaps, is the occasionally buzzing package that hangs off her belt, stuffed with insects of various shape and size. She plans to leave them for the Prince, whether they see the creature or not; to leave it with a little stash for LongNight, until she can come and visit again.

Jyoti lingers near Auni and Zuriel, unhappy with being confined to such a small space and seeking comfort in her friends. Stifling her own anxiety, the Shield swallows and steps further into the darkness, adjusting her eyes to an owl's black gaze. "Shall we?"
she ran to the lighthouse, hoped that it would help her see
she saw that the lighthouse had been washed out to sea

Deimos arrived first, because the gods of Caido could be capricious. Jigano subconsciously straightened as well, tense but knowing the General well enough to expect a nod, perhaps a single word of greeting at most. They had constructed the Spark Bird perch and prepared the Monster Hunter’s Guild for LongNight together, working in tandem as he had told Amalia they could, but it didn’t undo the mistrust and anger, harsh words and winter’s chill between them. Much of that was his own fault, and he would need to have a reckoning with the Sword eventually… but this was neither the time nor the place. He made Amalia happy, and that was enough for Jigano to extend a tacit invitation to him until time and space could be found for the words that needed to be said between. Private words, however, and so for today he simply nodded in return, tense but composed, his manner solemn but not combative. ”Good morning Deimos,” he said quietly, and offered Zuriel a small bow.

Kiada arrived on Deimos’s heels, thank all the fortunate gods, and Jigano’s solemn manner warmed and softened, his sober lips quirking into a grin for the Harpy as Isuma abandoned his shoulder to circle Auni with happy chirps, taking her accustomed spot on the luxere’s antlers. ”‘Hey’ to you, too,” he greeted her. ”Did you get a good breakfast?” Teasing with genuine affection, he welcomed her to the ranks of the trouble-seekers as he had once before, extending his trust to her and hoping that this time he wouldn’t fail the trust she was putting in him.

His grin transferred to Amalia as he pretended to yawn – an act that turned real in the middle of it and he gave her a sheepish smile when it was done. ”I’m getting used to early mornings at the farm, but hopefully this will be worth it!” And even if they found nothing but dust and the footprints turned out to be the Prince’s? As long as no on was hurt he was hoping it would still be a good day exploring with his found family; one day without the feverish preparations for LongNight or shadow of the blight haunting them.

”If everyone’s ready?” The question was mostly rhetorical; Deimos and Kiada were accomplished warriors in their own right, and Amalia had been on no few adventures for the Loreseekers and her own reasons by now. They each knew their strengths, and would have compensated for their weaknesses before arriving, so Jigano turned and led the way down, down, into the tunnels of the Underground and the darkness that awaited them there, far from the clear air and clean sunlight just rising over the world above.

He had his Lantern and his notes, and he looked to Amalia for confirmation of their path as they started out through dampened stone and shadowed corridors. Paradoxically the temperature seemed to rise the deeper they went, the chill becoming clammy with moisture as they walked through the dark, lit only by their collective lanterns. Jigano held his aloft, preferring Deimos and Kiada to keep hands free and ready to draw weapons in case of trouble, but aside from the distant echo of dripping water they noticed little at first.

At one point the path narrowed until it would be difficult for the unicorn’s muscle and luxere’s antlers to pass, a squeeze that might have been possible but would not allow for swift retreat should it become necessary. Isuma opted to stay with Auni, whatever the luxere’s decision, and the humans would continue on with only a little scraped skin to show for it.

It was shortly after that, however, that the skittering began.

Jigano had stopped to peer at the wall, finger not-quite-touching the strange words written there as he compared them to his notes of their previous run, when the scratching first echoed through the tunnel. Roughly five feet wide where they had paused, the sound was quiet at first, but was quickly joined by a plethora of echoes. Jigano glanced grimly to Deimos, remembering their trip down into the Underground with Ronin, and set a quicker pace, trying to find a more defensible section of the tunnel to wait in.

They were not so lucky. The tunnel continued unbroken by intersections large enough to permit a human to pass (though several rock falls and intersecting tunnels were definitely large enough for the rodent denizens to use) until a hissing chitter behind them caused the bard to turn, raising the lantern high enough to illuminate a little ways back down the tunnel. The first ROUS entered the light not on the ground but the ceiling, as Deimos would remember them doing before. Right behind it came a second, while the third raced along the floor of the tunnel in the humans’s footprints. Eight of the giant mutated rodents in total were visible as they attacked, the rats ranging from the size of small cats to the size of large raccoons as they leapt after their prey.

Deimos is IGNORED as the rats try to go around him
- Zuriel is ATTACKED by ONE ROUS with a deathwish
Kiada is ATTACKED by TWO ROUSes
- Auni DODGES ONE ROUS, taking Isuma with him
Amalia is ATTACKED by ONE ROUS
- JYOTI is IGNORED as the ROUSes are confused by a flying whale and don’t know if it’s food or not
Jigano is IGNORED, being farthest from the rats

The rest of the pack is right on the heels of the frontrunners, eager for blood! Do you run or do you fight?

Zuriel, almost a haughty version of the Sword, indicated her notions of Jigano with a disdainful look while Deimos merely nodded again – and when everyone accompanying the ventures had joined, not tucking himself into the banter, they motioned forward, down into the depths of the Underground. He drew several blades and placed them along his belt, following lantern light and pathways, recalling the trap Emmett had found himself within, his remains lodged behind fallen rocks and fissures, clenching his jaw in thought. His senses were drawn and tethered to the outset, to what lurked and lain beneath the shrouds and veils of darkness, to experiences well recalled in his mind, Zuriel following suit, accompanying with sharpened eyes and ignited potential.

The skittering was heard; little nails on stone, claws on rock, and immediately the predator, raptorial predilections took over his form, taut and tethered and bound into warrior tactics. He offered a blade to each, then drew his own, kept it tight in his fist, the pommel nestled into well-earned callouses, familiar and harpooning. At their pause, the General’s eyes flickered to Jigano, a nod indicating he knew, he understood, they’d seen it all before – ROUs incoming.

They weren’t to be avoided; perhaps drawn to the light or to the notion of fresh, new blood. He could hear one above him, like they’d done before, and he unleashed a torrent of deadly invocations along the ceiling, hoping to cease and desist any trickling forward, towards kin and allies. Perhaps some remembered him, because none seemed to maneuver towards his stance – not like it mattered. He’d go after them regardless.

Zuriel seemed to find the entire notion of being assaulted as a personal affront, using it to unleash some sensation of disaster and ruin. Where she was usually content to be a peaceful, tranquil, serene individual, it was likely all a pretense – with a flattened look and a foreboding snort, she unleashed her particular brand of hell, swinging her horn to either skewer the rat or slash it into ribbons. Her hooves were also a formidable weapon, stomping across the floor with indicated relish. Deimos suspected she was having a grand time – if her excitement rushing through their connection was any indication.

The Sword used this opportunity to unhinge violence too – all exasperations and frustrations from other moments unfurled in a brilliant haze, choosing to strike at one of the cretins closest to Kiada with his blade, infusing brawn and rage and blistering contortions into the efforts.

--

Deimos offers weapons to everyone.

He uses his life drain magic on any rats trying to get by him via the ceiling. He slashes at one of the ROUs trying to attack Kiada.

Zuriel intends to completely mutilate the ROU attacking her, either by horn or hooves.

Amalia

She should have expected the ROUS to appear, yet somehow the sound of them catches her by surprise, predatory instinct immediately ignited by the sound of scurrying and swift approaching feet. Leopard ears rise on her head, furred and alert, twitching as nails run across stone. They seem far enough away that she isn't immediately concerned, but growing steadily closer, and for a moment the girl stands uncertain of what to do, whether or not to shift.

Too long- because the rodents are shockingly swift, and before Amalia can make a decision the small herd of beasts has descended upon them en masse, jumping on heads and snapping at heels. The Shield's eyes widen in sudden alarm as one creature attaches itself to her leg; shaking aggressively, she does her best to send it flying without doing too much damage to it. Truth be told, the girl is far more afraid for the well being of the rodents than her motley found family: she has absolutely no illusions regarding Deimos and Kiada's ability to take care of themselves.

The teeth dislodged from her pant leg, Amalia swings forward with her staff defensively while simultaneously calling out mentally and aloud. "We don't want to hurt you! Go home, and we'll leave you be!" Hopefully they can get through this without too much bloodshed, either on their side or the beasts'.

Amalia shakes a ROUS off her leg, then tries to use her beastmaster ability to compel the ROUS's to leave the group alone.

KIADA

I always do.” She winks toward Jigano on the comment of breakfast. But before long, they’re ready and moving on, slipping through and following the group down into the tunnels, into the underground. And Kiada wonders if she’s ever actually spent enough time down here to realize and recognize what they’re looking for. But ah, she’s here now, isn’t she?

The corridors begin to grow smaller and smaller, and she can feel Auni’s anxiety, but not before she can hear the skittering of feet. Quietly, she orders Auni to remain behind, not wishing to need to run and have her soul bonded stuck on the other side. He doesn’t seem to mind, and with it Kiada breathes a slight sigh of relief. At least, until two of the giant rat monster things launch their attack on her. A hiss of breath leaves her and she uses the weapon Deimos made her, aiming for the one that had launched itself at her outer thigh, aiming to either impale it, or send it flying down the hallway. The one that Deimos focuses on is next, and despite hearing Amalia’s words, she gives it a warning sign as it goes for round two of her foot.

A huff of breath leaves her, and while the pain of her thigh is somewhat distracting, it’s not enough to cause her to stop. Besides, they have Zuriel, the stomping queen that can heal her. The Harpy is not worried, only… hopeful.

Kiada tries to either impale or knock off a ROUS on her thigh, and tries to shake off the other one on her foot.

They were a quiet group that descended into the depths, one that knew the dangers they might encounter and did not take them lightly. When Auni was set to guard their way back, Isuma stayed with her friend while the humans continued on. They were far from the entrance by the time the ROUSes attacked, but at least they had warning and a few seconds to prepare. Precious time that Deimos used to create weapons for Harpy and bard, Jigano accepting what was offered without comment as all attention focused on the attackers. Not-so-tiny predators unleashed their hangry fury upon the humans and companions, but this snack bit back with blade and horn and magic.

Deimos might not have been attacked directly, but his magic caught three of the rats squarely, weakening them enough that the rat attacking Kiada’s foot was an easy target for his blade. Zuriel, however, needed no assistance and made that perfectly clear as her horn tore through the ROUS that had the temerity to attack her. She caught it midleap, slicing clean through its chest, and it splattered cinematically as its blood spray caught her in passing.

Kiada struck at the one on her thigh first and the blade bit deep, shearing through skin and bone as she freed herself of the cat-sized attacker and leaving it bleeding on the ground. The one on her foot was already injured and nearly dead thanks to Deimos, but the raccoon-sized blind rat managed to dodge her strike and staggered in for another bite, looking almost ready to pass out from its wounds but too spiteful to stop.

At least, until Amalia dislodged her own attacker and called out for friendship and fellow-feeling between predator and prey. Jigano didn’t realize that she had also gained the ability to compel all animals, and he put his own ability to backing up her words. Between the two of them the small pack retreated in confusion, excited by the spilled blood of their comrades but unable to resist the compulsion.

Deimos ‘s Life Drain weakens the rats attacking Kiada and Auni! His sword HITS the ROUS on Kiada’s foot!
ZURIEL critically impales the rat attacking her! (it’s dead. It’s really dead.)
Kiada HITS the ROUS on her leg and kills it! The ROUS on her foot DODGES and bites again!
Amalia and Jigano use their Beastmaster ability SUCCESSFULLY!

”Let’s not linger,” Jigano urged, pausing only long enough for Zuriel to tend to Kiada’s leg before turning to lead the way once more and moving far more quickly now that he’d found the strange writing on the wall from his memory. Lantern held high, its white light steady in the darkness, he set a fast pace, wanting to clear the area of the fight before the scent drew more ROUSes than they could handle.

It was certainly a good idea, even if it came too late.

They had been walking for another twenty minutes before the sounds reached them again, a faint susurrus like something breathing in the tunnels behind them. Ten minutes later the tunnel narrowed abruptly from a caved in wall that filled all but a small hole in the upper right corner. It looked big enough for a child to wriggle through, though Zuriel would find the way impassable. Jigano carefully edged his way up the unstable stones to grimly to examine it, turning back to look at Amalia and Kiada . ”We can shift small enough to make it through, I think. It’ll be hard to make it wide enough for Deimos’s shoulders to fit through, but we might manage it. Or do you want to go back and try to find a way around it?” There had been a few crosstunnels since they’d left the ROUS attack, but there was no guarantee they would meet back up with the path they were currently on. And then there was that unsettling noise behind them, where they had left the dead ROUSes. Of course, Jigano didn’t know about Deimos’s animal shift yet, but whether the Sword would be willing to leave Zuriel to find her way back was up to him.

Through the hole and stay on the trail, or try to find another way around?

Send a heartbeat to the void that cries through you
Relive the pictures that have come to pass
There was a semblance of satisfaction pressed into his veins, into his flesh, into his skin, at the spilling of blood: routine, normal, something he’d been built and conformed for from the very beginning. Warrior through and through, honed knowledge, skills, and techniques meant solely for destruction, mayhem, and distortions of an adversary, melded and harpooned towards the ROUs again. Success measured its way through blade and enchantments, molding the barest glimmer of a snicker, a smirk, triumphant little ministrations of death and desecration. Zuriel, apparently, felt the same – a riotous fervor bristling and hastening amidst their bond, and it would be hard-pressed to wonder where it began and where it ended, avaricious irreverence in the unwound savagery, coated in blood, a loss of nobility but a gain in unholy vehemence.

He followed the wake of everyone else’s movements – not even remotely surprised at Kiada’s actions, nor Amalia or Jigano’s, their preferences not aimed towards violence (it wasn’t for everyone). Thereafter, when there were corpses and the rest had scattered, Zuriel, already incredibly prideful, held a vastly superior glance to her eyes, and tended to the wound on Kiada’s leg.

The Sword and unicorn followed after Jigano’s instructions, not lingering or meandering along the threshold, or awaiting some other fold of skittering nuisances. The pace, quick and swift, was tended to by his long limbs, unfurling their way through the dark, his gaze sweeping over each and every one of them, senses keyed in on any other movements, motions, or sounds.

But when they came to a tribulation, a wall that ensured Zuriel would have to remain behind, the unicorn immediately huffed, snorted, effectively putting her foot down. Though he could’ve shifted and not worried about his shoulders at all, they’d already made use of Zuriel’s tactics and abilities once – and he wasn’t about to simply abandon her. The general was also loathe to make more work for everyone else; the weight of uncertainty shifting on his shoulders – because what if this was the only way to wherever their destination anointed? Could he carve her a way through? “I would rather not leave Zuriel,” was his first statement, but he would defer to a group decision if it became necessary. The unicorn however, haughty, smug, and gaining a certain narrowed-eyed feature, might not. “I could move some stones?” Another risk; in case everything else fell – the chill of the Spire still a blistering memory in the back of his mind.

KIADA
do not misunderstand me when i call myself a shell

There’s a quiet triumph to Kiada as her blade bites deep into the ROUS, and with it the creature falls from her, ripping free a small amount of flesh and tearing away some skin. As for the one going for her foot, she gives Deimos a bright smile of response for what he’s done to the other one aiming for her. Amalia, on the other hand, as the creatures begin to drift and retreat in their confusion, Kiada gives a light nod to.

It’s quick enough after, that Zuriel is there to heal the wound to the Harpy’s thigh, and Kiada feels just about as good as new, continuing with them until they reach the small hole in the upper right corner of the wall, a frown finding her lips at such a discovery. And with Zuriel having already been useful, she decides that perhaps it’s better to stick with the Unicorn, just in case. After all, despite her experiences in the Rift and Helovia, she was far less experienced than the rest of them here.

As Deimos voice’s his own concern, Kiada nods in agreement. “We’ve used her once already, we might need her again.” She adds on top of Deimos’ thought, eyes following the cascading stones until she spots the hole once more. “We could move the stones or find another way around.” She suggests, glancing toward the space behind them, where they had passed a few cross tunnels.

Amalia

Amalia winces as Zuriel thoroughly skewers an ROUS, but at least she is able to convince the majority of the creatures to leave unscathed. Onward through the tunnels she follows Jigano, Jyoti trilling her discomfort occasionally, the leopardess keeping a watchful eye on her companions and their surroundings as the bard leads on.

Until they get to a cave-in- new, and the girl frowns as she looks at the small space. They should all be able to squeeze through it easily in animal form, but the companions will have a harder time, and the Shield can appreciate Deimos' reluctance to leave the unicorn behind. Jyoti, too, would rather not be without her friend, but there's more to think about than just this gap. "I don't want to leave them behind, either, bur further in- there's a pit. So even if we go around, we have to find a way for Zuriel and Auni to get in and out."

Rubbing the little whale under her chin, the baker tries to come up with alternatives. "If... if we found another way to the pit, could we set up a system to lower them down and raise them back out? Or maybe there's another way down... or we could make stairs?" It's a lot of ideas, but she's hunting for alternatives, desperate both to continue the adventure and leave no one behind.

Too much talking.

The walls begin to shake. Whether or not it has anything to do with you is unclear, but it doesn't take an architect to know that in seconds the decisions you thought you had time to make, will be made for you. As the walls rock and buckle, an opening begins to appear. It will take magic and ingenuity (and the sucking in of stomachs) to get through, but you just might make it.

Might.

IC you have about 1 minute to make a decision. The walls around you seem as though they are going to collapse. You can go forward, or retreat. Not making a decision is not an option.

The shaking was definitely not a good sign, though en earlier temblor was probably what had caused the rockfall in the first place. Jigano hurriedly slid back down and rejoined his friends, a worried look on his face. "As unstable as this area seems to be, we might not get the chance again," he admitted, glancing around at each of them soberly. " Deimos , can you make an arch of iron or steel to support this opening? If it's wide enough and Zuriel is willing we might be able to push and pull her through." Or the Sword might prove to be the smartest of them and chose to go get help, which wouldn't be a bad thing. But if he didn't...

" Kiada , let's send Auni and Isuma back up and tell them to get Ronin and Remi, just in case." The companions couldn't talk, but they could lead help back along the trail that had just been made, and between them Ronin and Remi could probably shore up the walls and seek out anyone stuck behind a rockfall. " Amalia , let's try and get this section stable enough for Deimos's archway."

Jigano drew in his stomach as tightly as he could and wriggled through the opening, doing what he could to widen it without weakening it as he passed in the hopes that the unicorn would be able to join them if she were able.

Jigano asks Deimos to make a supporting arch. He sends a telepathic message to Isuma to get help from Remi and Ronin, and then slips through the opening, attempting to carefully widen it in preparation for Deimos's magic!
