Koel wasn’t at all bothered by @edrei’s continuing assertions that he was a useless lump. Truth be told, he wasn’t great at love, or romance, or sex, or anything related to it. Back when he’d been following the scripts—or what he thought the customs were—he’d known what he was supposed to do, how to act. Now, however, he was a bit lost. Normally he’d be able to figure out how to navigate these waters; however, their situation right now was anything but normal. Still, he’d do his best. ”I was getting ready to give you a workout, obviously.” He winked, as if his statement wasn’t explicit enough.

Predictably she enjoyed his subtle word play. He grinned: he was glad she’d caught it, and happier still to know that he could still make someone smile. People (himself included, obviously), were far to gloomy in these parts. While he wasn’t so naive to believe that spreading a bit of joy around would improve their lots, it couldn’t hurt.

When she defended her actions that night—when it came to food at least—he had to chuckle and shake his head. That was just a downright lie, no matter how she tried to spin it. Still, he’d respond in kind if this was the game she wanted to play. ”So you gave me spoiled grains and water? Some dinner, that. Excellent hosting all around. You forgot to feed me and then jumped me. I should be filing a formal complaint.” As she brushed off his statement about dessert, he gave her his best smolder. It was rusty, but there was fire in it. ”Is that so? I think we will.” If they didn’t get interrupted and he had his way, they certainly would know.

As Edy jerked away from him, he couldn’t stop the plaintive whine that escaped his throat. Even that brief contact had scrambled his thoughts, left him incapable of doing anything but try and reach for more, try to pull her back in for another kiss. It had been quite something: while that might’ve just been the dearth of kissing and sex in his life talking, he didn’t think so.

However, something had spooked her, even if the way her hands roamed belied that she wasn’t that worried; growling incoherently, he shook his head. No, he hadn’t heard anything, but he’d been pretty effectively distracted from the task at hand. Still, even if all he wanted to do was kiss her again, some rational part of him had resisted melting in the heat of his passion and was now urgently nudging him to at least check this out. Groaning, he let go of her. If there was a threat, they needed to be mobile. Simultaneously, he started to send out a mental call—he didn’t understand this weird new ability of his to call birds to him, but he wasn’t looking a gift horse in the mouth—for assistance.

Three specks appeared from the woods. They were starlings: tiny and pretty useless in a fight, but Koel wanted them for another reason. If there was danger lurking, a few extra sets of eyes might help them spot it. He couldn’t take to the skies himself—he didn’t like the idea of leaving Edy alone—so he’d make scouts out of the birds if he could. One settled on each shoulder and the third on his head (which no doubt looked ridiculous) as he gave them instructions. They trilled uncertainly before taking off, each in a different direction. Seemed his vague orders to ‘seek out danger and give out a cry when they found it’ weren’t compelling or clear enough, but they were on the move. Maybe it would give them a bit of warning.

Turning to Edy—though still keeping his senses alert—he realized he didn’t ask what she thought she’d heard. Dropping his voice to a whisper, he internally cursed his lack of preparation. ”What did you hear?” At the first sign of danger, he was getting them out of here; after the monster at the spire, he wasn’t taking any chances.

Edy
fuck you <3

As he set her down—damn he was strong, she really needed to make more of that later—she continued to stare into the woods. Her hands had come to rest on his hips, but for now at least she was temporarily letting her thoughts roam elsewhere. Yes she had been equally as enthralled with the attention she'd been receiving from Koel as he'd been with her; that's how she knew she'd heard it. Precisely because she hadn't been paying attention.

Swallowing shakily, more out of unsatisfied yearnings than fear, Edy's right hand drifted from its place cupping the side of Koel's hip to dipping down beneath the line of his pants. Dexterously and with almost no actually conscious thought on her part, her fingers gently slipped their way down as her hand moved from its place on the side of his body to the middle. If this was nothing, she'd not just have him wilting on her, but then again, Edy was not particularly good at keeping her hands to herself anyways.

As the birds flew closer, and closer, and closer, Edy frowned and tilted her head, slowly turning around to face Koel, only to find the birds had take her previous perch as their own. Narrowing her eyes slightly, she flicked her dark gaze from bird to bird, and then back to the former-Overseer. "I know we talked about birds and sex the first time we met, but this really isn't what I had in mind." She said with a lighthearted smirk. Just because they might be on the brink of death didn't mean Edy would suddenly sober up.

During his chat with the birds, Edy's fingers had come to gently grip the waistband of his pants, now more holding on to him than trying to arouse what was within. Blinking to try and focus her memory, she looked up at him with a slightly furrowed brow. "Branches breaking I thought...But it sounded too dry.." Biting her lip, she looked over her shoulder at the trees. "Those trees are too green to sound that dry.." Edy continued before turning back to Koel waiting to see if he'd either confirm or deny this. He was the woodsy one after all.

It lumbered.
It scuffled.
It slithered and slathered and pulled and jerked.
When you had 7 legs, such was a way of life.
7 legs, 1.5 heads, and a shit ton of tusks.

Mutations happened, but for this poor boar mutation hardly even seemed a fitting description. With a bloated head-ish looking tumour on its shoulder, an extra leg per side and one unfortunately dangling uselessly from its chest, the creature was a horror to behold. Luckily, no one did for very long. Possessing a horrifying array of tusks that brandished themselves like sickly yellow swords from its mouth (and the mouth of its other head), the boar eviscerated everything it saw that it could get its tusks on. The creature was remarkably quick, but turning with all those legs was a bit of a hassle.

With a comical oink oink sound as it inhaled, the beast scented the two interrupted fuck-friends and made a charge straight for them.

It seemed that Koel wasn’t going to have to respond to Edy’s claims after all. Indeed, the world gave its own response soon enough: a monstrosity of a boar shuffled into view. Actually, he was assuming it was a boar. It had far too many body parts, but its shape was vaguely boarlike, and nothing else immediately sprang to mind. However, it was so grossly misshapen that Koel was simultaneously disgusted and sympathetic towards it. Honestly, it was a marvel it had survived this long; putting it out of its misery seemed like the kindest option.

Unfortunately, the eagle was feeling anything but kind; instead, he was filled with a rage that surprised even him. Just once he would like to try and do something enjoyable without the fates kicking him in the balls. But no, every time he tried to let loose, shit like a mutated boar cockblocking him showed up. It had gotten to the point where he was just about ready to give up on ever being happy. That didn’t seem to be in the cards for him—nor did peace and quiet—so perhaps he should stop seeking it out and just cut loose in a different way.

Indeed, he wanted to scream his outrage to the sky. Actually, he could: there was nothing stopping him but his own principles and they were frayed and nearly broken. While objectively he knew that provoking the boar was a bad idea (they’d probably just wandered into its territory and disturbed it, and it might let them go peacefully if they left slowly and softly), something in him snapped. He wanted to punch something, fight something, rend with beak and talon. And here was a convenient target that he seriously doubted anyone would miss. In fact, he’d be doing it—and the world—a favor, by getting rid of this thing.

Dropping his voice to as quiet a whisper as he could manage, he leaned in to Edy’s ear, the heat of passion in his voice now transformed to fury. ”Cover your ears and get ready to dodge if this goes sideways.” The former Overseer didn’t want to see her get bored by a boar, even if he was willing to face down this beast’s charge. Then, he stepped forward and squared off, rubbing his charm bracelet. He bent his knees slightly, ready to run in either direction or jump up and take flight if he had to. Hopefully, Edrei would take his orders and advice for once, instead of going her own way as she was wont to do.

Taking a deep breath, he paused for just a moment. Then, he covered his ears and screamed as loudly as he could at the animal, pouring every ounce of outrage he normally kept contained within him into the sound. It was a lot, and the sound was deafening even through his hands. While it would probably just get him attacked for his trouble—which he welcomed, almost, since he needed to work through this anger somehow—maybe the unnatural screeching would send the boar fleeing. But if not, he was ready to take it on with his bare hands if he had to.

Edy

The teenager bristled against the sound of Koel's voice. Gone was the playful accent, gone was the heat that she'd been so drawn to. Even when they'd been sparring together she'd never heard anything even remotely like this from the Overseer, and as she pulled back to look at his expression, her own was one of distrust and confusion. Cover her ears? Was this some weird eagle power he was going to bust out? Yell at it in bird or some shit?

Skeptically Edy nodded slowly even as Koel placed himself ahead of her, seeming to limber himself up like he was about to wrestle the thing. "The fuck are you—" Edy started to say, as Koel began to scream. Only it wasn't just a scream it was like some magical belch of sound. Cringing away Edy covered her ears and squirmed beneath the sound. What in the hell was Koel doing? Whatever was out in the woods was definitely going to fucking know where they were now.

And here she thought Koel was smart.

Whining through the Overseer's continued screeching, Edy headbutted one of Koel's arms with her head to try and communicate as succinctly as she could the following:

WHATTHEFUCKAREYOUDOINGSTOPFUCKINGSCREAMINGYOUEAGLE-BRAINEDMORONYOU'REGOINGTOGETUSKILLED.

It smelled them.

It wanted them.

It was going to eat them.

The boar's lumbering run was surprisingly quick for all of the bizarre appendages that it possessed. As it reached the line of trees that cut against the flatness of the field, it came to awkward halt that nearly resulted in it falling over. In fact it sort of looked like someone flailing to a stop on ice, for part of its body twisted one way and it came to a standstill on an angle. Shaking its head(s) against the noise Koel was making, the beast groaned and verbally thrashed against the assault.

But the boar was not a smart creature and it had come this far already. The sound was disorientating and painful, but its prey was right there.

Two of them.

Grunting, the boar made a blind dash for Koel. He was in a straight line after all, and as long as he didn't move (much) the boar wouldn't really need to worry so much about the way his eardrums were buzzing and threatening to burst. Even if they did, the creature was driven by instinct.
