The windbreak didn't need to be full-grown all in one day. He could return as time and magic permitted to grow each section a little taller and stronger over the season, sinking roots deeply enough to find water even in Longheat's punishing drought. But he wanted to get a good length of windbreak planted this first day, strongly-started and healthy enough to survive as though they'd been growing three or four years against whatever trials Flowerbirth could throw at them in the coming days.

He moved down to the end of the first section, then a little farther, and began his ritual task anew. Healing energy flowed into the ground as he wove it through his earth magic to enrich the soil. He planted one seed at a time, sprouting each until he felt its young roots take hold before he moved to the next, and when all six trees were again in place he returned to the center of them and let the energy of growth and life flow through him, through the soil, to the roots of the evergreens - and only them, giving no weeds an extra drop of his magic - until the trees were roughly as tall as the first batch.

The work was literally draining, and he sat back to wipe sweat from his brow in spite of the cool spring day. It took effort and discipline to meld the two magics and he knew he had to pace himself going forward, especially given how long the windbreak needed to stretch. It wouldn't be the task of a day, he feared, not if he kept using his magic so profligately... perhaps growing the trees to only three or four feet would be enough on the next batch?

Abasi returned to work after his break.

He had run out of creation magic to make the poles with, but he found sticks and twigs from around the field did the same job, albeit a little less neatly - a reasonable sacrifice for practicality, he thought. There was a lot of field to dig around but as he worked he began to find it almost calming to have so much to do that was so simple, so easy.

There was almost something meditative in the digging, the rhythmic motion of it. As he went along he began to pat the earth he had removed into a small wall shape along the edge of the outside of the ditch, to further keep the field safe from pests or floods.

This time around, the pipes were perfect, and the holes Deimos put in them were perfectly spaced. Water began trickling out, the little that Loren had managed to coax to flow into the irrigation system dripping to the parched ground below. However, the summoner’s growing frustration with his water magic proved to be a problem again. Somehow, he managed to pull so much water into the channel he’d carved that it collapsed, and stopped flowing into the pipe system entirely. Sighing, he settled into a cross-legged position and meditated, trying to calm his mind before trying again.

Jigano’s efforts succeeded once more, and the windbreak now stretched over sixty feet. While more work could indeed still be done, the bard’s trees would block the majority of the soil from that portion of the fields from getting tossed around by an errant gust. Abasi’s ditches were finally completed, though the last section was more loosely packed from a combination of both fatigue and the makeshift poles the undertaker had used. Still, it would hold for now.

This PQ is now concluded for everyone except Loren (unless you all would prefer to continue your current tasks or switch to new ones)!

Jigano had found a rhythm and though he was beginning to tire he still had a little magic left in him. He pulled together the last of the seeds that hadn't blown away and moved down to another patch of ground, continuing the process he had now practiced twice. It went faster the the third time, and soon six more trees were growing upwards from the enriched soil, young but strong and healthier than anything else around them thanks to the healing magic the bard pushed into the soil around their roots.

He pushed them as tall as he could, feeling the magic flow out of him until only the dregs were left, and there he collapsed back on his hands in the good, black dirt, grinning as he looked up at his work. The last batch were as tall as he was, and with any luck (and a little attention from his healing hands when he was passing through) they'd remain healthy and thick-boughed to block the wind.

He rested for awhile until he felt strong enough to make it back to the Settlement, going over to report his success to Loren and bid the man good luck before going off to find something to eat. He was ravenous after expending so much magic, and looking forward to a hot meal - or at least pillaging the bakery to beg a loaf from Amalia, now that the Rathskeller kitchen was no longer a thing.

DEIMOS
we've all got blood on our hands
something somewhere had to die
so we could stay alive
Finally he could coax the slightest of relieved sighs from his chest, watching, waiting, for something else to burst, to fall apart – and when it didn’t, the most minimal essence of triumph settled and pooling in his veins. He crouched, inspecting the water trickling out, dripping along the newfound system, down into the dried, thirsty soil. He still didn’t have the makings of a farmer, but had been content to contribute to any resources they could viably provide to the Hollowed Grounds citizens and inhabitants. His eyes lifted again though, sliding over to Loren, who appeared to be in some form of meditation, and as he witnessed the water continue to trickle, not flow, he pondered the schemes, what else they could do. The beast stood, making his way over to the summoner, a tilt to his head; he had no power over the liquid, not like his mother had, clever and quick, quiet and resolute, but he could still try to lend aid where he could. “What else do you need?” The Sword inquired, barely more than a whisper, a grumble, a growl, in effort to not break apart Loren’s ruminations.

As he came to the spot where he had begun, the ditches meeting in the corner, Abasi sat back and wiped his forehead (accidentally smearing it with dirt); proud of the work he had accomplished. It was strange for him to be doing such physical tasks - back in Egypt he would have felt deeply humiliated, conscious of the eyes on him. Here though it felt like everyone was equal, at least as far as the division of work went and he found it was surprisingly refreshing.

Standing and heading back over to Loren, he let Deimos ask the question then nodded, indicating he would take on any additional tasks too.

Thankfully, Loren was deep enough in his meditation that Deimos’ soft question wasn’t enough to startle the summoner out of it. Indeed, he just breathed in and out evenly. ”Peace, quiet, and focus.” With that he closed his eyes and took another breath. And another.

Only then did he open them and turn his full attention to the water. This time, while he still proceeded slowly and cautiously, he also proceeded confidently. Maybe that made the difference, or maybe it was simply a matter of practice. Regardless, when he nudged the river with his magic, it began to flow in the direction he commanded at the speed he desired. Indeed, it flowed easily into the pipes that Deimos had set up, and before too long began sprinkling onto the fields at a slow, but steady rate, one that would enrich the fields rather than drown or wash them away.

Standing up, a triumphant smile on his face, the Launceleyn stretched his body, then turned to the other two men. "Thank you both for your help. I think that's enough for the day. I'll work on the rest of the improvements some other time." Giving the General a firm nod, Loren turned to Abasi, a fond smile on the summoner's face.

He stood away and watched, peace, quiet, and focus required but not by him; the water’s flow eventually gained and garnished by the summoner’s abilities once more. The rivulet twisted and turned down pipes, power forged, cascading into more than just mere drops, now a semblance of working orders and parts, machinations finally coming to fruition, a conclusion. The beast was satisfied and content with the notion, even if his inexperience had tampered with all of it at the beginning, piercing glance sliding back over to Loren. “You are welcome.” A nod to the fellow militia member, and to the other who lingered behind, before maneuvering and gathering the rest of his supplies and bags, and exiting the fields, their work complete for now.

They’d put in a good day’s work. Smiling at them, Loren called upon some water from the river to wash off the worst of the dirt from himself from his sitting by the riverbank. Then he gave Deimos a grateful smile as the General left. Then it was just Abasi and the summoner left.

The smile turned into a wicked grin. Stepping closer to the undertaker, the Launceleyn dropped his voice to a heated whisper. "Well. I guess I'll have to find some way to repay you." He let out a huff of laughter. "Plus, you know, we have to get cleaned up, and you know how much I enjoy that." Returning his voice to a more normal tone and volume, he smiled, much more tenderly. "Come on, let's head back to the Manor." With that, Loren turned to lead his courter (or whatever the correct terminology was) back to the settlement.
