HARPER
Harper is well aware what he's doing is probably against the rules. At the very least not socially acceptable. But here he is nonetheless, eyes gleaming like a cat with a canary in its sights, running full tilt at the sturdy Atheneum shelves and hauling himself up with astonishing speed. Higher, higher, higher. Needing that thrill of fighting gravity, of being on the knife's edge away from flying, from soaring. And perhaps a dash of rebellion to spice his blood, a mischievous boyish part of him that will never truly fade.

The tops of the shelves are dusty, untouched. Harper walks along the very edge, sure-footed and staring at the dome ceiling, mesmerized. Completely fearless. And when he's sure nobody is around, he begins to walk on his hands, doing a few front walkovers, springing lightly on the balls of his feet. Dust collects on his palms, and he makes a face at it, but it's worth being up in the air and away from the boring life on the ground. At least until he gets caught.

i shut my eyes and all the world drops dead
Dante wasn't much for books. He'd read his fair share of texts in school and none had particularly caught his attention for more than the required reading before they were lost to the abyss that he called 'under the bed'. But where else was he going to learn about the different flora and fauna in the area aside from actually venturing out there? And venturing out there invited too many ways to run into the dangerous ones. Like, the 'dead if they look at you' ones.

So he'd found himself in the Atheneum. It was what he expected from what was basically a library— dusty, relatively dark, and asthma-inducing if he dislodged too much of said dust.

He'd only been wandering around for a few minutes, mostly poking his nose into texts that were way over his head, before he noticed the dust particles catching the light were increasing in volume at an alarming rate. He expects to see a squirrel-like creature making a nest or some sort up in the higher shelving units. He doesn't expect to see someone walking on their hands.

What the—?

"Uh, hey, excuse me? I don't think you're supposed to be up there. Walking like... that." Dante finishes lamely. Sure, he wasn't known for always following the rules, but did he not realize how high up he was? There was nothing down here to cushion his fall except maybe some old, misplaced books but what good was that. The brunette's mind is racing with the possibilities as his hands tighten around the spine of one particularly dusty book, knuckles whitening as he followed the older man's movements with his eyes while remaining firmly planted on the ground himself.

HARPER
Having done this since he could walk, Harper is expecting a great many types of reactions when he is eventually discovered. But the wavering, young, fearful voice had been relatively low on the list of most likely. Harper arches into a front walkover, coming back up on his feet. Completely fearless, Harper spins on the balls of his feet, toes hanging over the edge as he plants his heels and bends at the waist, gazing down and out from the edge of the bookcase. On the ground staring up with wide eyes is a young boy, and Harper smiles wide, waving jauntily with the hand not perched on his waist.

"Hey there little tyke!" His bright grin is impish in contrast with his warm, reassuring gaze. And because he's a bit of an asshole, he swings one leg out into empty space, almost consideringly. Then he sinks down into a perfect split and his hands run down the spines of the books on the shelf below him, practically hanging off the front of the bookshelf. Taps his fingers playfully against the wood. "I don't see any signs saying 'no climbing', do you?" His favorite, most well-used excuse.

Did he not care about anything else that Dante was obviously concerned about? He's sure that the rate his heart is hammering in his chest is a dead giveaway to the overwhelming anxiety that's starting to work its way from the pit of his stomach up to his closed throat. Okay, he was a cool guy, message received, no need to stand so close to the edge!

"Obviously there was a sign that said 'no swallowing' when your mom and dad fucked because you must've gotten it from somewhere." Dante hisses out. His voice is strained as he averts his gaze from up above. He couldn't wrap his head around putting oneself in danger like this adult-sized child insisted on doing. "Just because there's no sign doesn't mean you should be an idiot."

To emphasize his stance of no near-airborne shenanigans, not just because he's feeling faint, Dante takes a seat on the dusty ground with his legs crossed one over the other. He refuses to look up at the shelving units any higher than eye level as he leans back his (sweaty) palms to feign a certain lack of interest as he was obviously suddenly very interested in the titles in front of him.

HARPER
Harper can't help how he hangs his head down against the wood and laughs, the spitfire commentary coming from the ground catching him off guard. What a foul little mouth! He can't help but adore it. "You're a hoot, kiddo." And with a grin, more manic than reassuring, he flips himself forward off the edge. Freefalls for a moment, embracing the feeling of adrenaline before he kicks a heel backwards to catch on a shelf, ridiculously balanced for one leg. He descends like that, and just because he's an asshole does a front flip and lands in front of the kid on the last jump. And then immediately sinks to sit with him on the marginally less dusty floor, limbs akimbo and feet swaying side to side on their heels.

"So what do you propose I do for fun then?" A cheeky grin is sent Dante's way, having fun with teasing him but too charmed by kids in general to keep it up for long. Kid looks close to a heart attack anyway.

A hoot. Sure. He thought this guy was childlike but his vocabulary reminded him of what he always imagined his grandpa sounding like. Dante had always caught more flack than what he considered was rightfully deserved for poking his nose into what he's not supposed to, and yet this guy was allowed to just jump all over the Anatheum? Weren't adults supposed to be like, role models or something?

He refuses to look over at this strange man and acknowledge his antics until he's safely sprawled in front of him. There's a visible weight lifted from his shoulders as his posture relaxes from the stiff-board like posture of before. Bright eyes take in the man before him as his near-erratic breathing calms, diverting his lungs course from the tell-tale signs of an asthma attack.

"Uh, well," He hadn't expected this guy to be interested in what he had to say. Their ideas of fun seemed too different for him to have anything of interest for this— Wait a second. "Have you slid around the hallways in these old buildings?"

His voice has picked up in volume as he's already unlacing his threadbare shoes and kicking them off in some direction. He'll worry about where they went later. Sure, this wasn't the temple (and maybe that was better and less blasphemous) but it had to be similar. "You can get some serious speed going on around here!" He's consciously filed the anxiety away to dwell on later now that they're both safely grounded. Now, he could have fun.

HARPER
Harper doesn't pout when the kid doesn't look up to watch his dismount. He doesn't. But he's easily mollified by the kid's attention when he looks up at Harper as he plops down in front of him. It's still attention, which is like the fuel that keeps Harper moving. He blames his upbringing, but his mentor used to fondly tease that he was just always meant to be an over the top showboat. Clearly she's wrong, but he wiggles a little closer when the kid speaks nonetheless. The kid's breathing is slowing - part of the reason he'd come down was noticing his mounting anxiety - so he doesn't point it out, and watches instead as the kid brightens with a sudden idea.

One that Harper is very invested in almost immediately.

Leaping up he toes off his own shoes and leaves them where they fall, smile beaming with childish delight. "I haven't! Wanna see who can get farther?" Challenge sparks in his blue eyes, edges crinkling with mischief as he proposes the idea. They're lucky there's nobody in this area, because Harper is pretty confident this is going to end in some hilarious property damage. Or bodily damage, who knows!
