the darkest nights produce the brightest stars
After oceans, after mountains, after leviathans so large as to be invisible-

After it all she leads them here to an altar of the gods.

Littered with bubbles and baubles of ice, it is a beautiful edifice in an unfriendly land, something familiar, easily identifiable. Sacred- and oh, how Amalia clings to those small and sacred things, finds solace in their constancy, the history written in worn out stone. Touching down on starlit wings, Amalia wonders if the marks of her talons will live beyond her presence.

If any part of her, however small, will persist past the point when she is gone.

Shifting into leopard skin, Amalia glances back to her companions, making sure they have landed beside her before padding closer to the Shrines. Look. The gods are here. The comfort this knowledge gives the girl is palpable through the bond. Leaning her face closer to one of the icy bubbles, she exhales softly against it, causing the glass to steam. Maybe they can guide us.

DEIMOS
The Sword followed now, on the beckoning strings of some other ethers and vestiges, simply basking in the unknown, in the tides of the looming mountains, their glory and shadows pressing over him – eager to know, eager to understand, eager to press on and on and on until they sunk into snow and earth. The sea of glass had fostered primordial things below the surface, and here –

Here they learned this world wasn’t as godless as it seemed.

It was remarkably familiar, to coast on by or ignore it, refute it, abandoned pride long since instilled. But the other fibers clinging to his wings, to his feathers, to the tawny down provoked another sort of insinuation, and he didn’t know how to explain it. Amalia touched the surface first, eternally faithful, and he circled in his descent, eternally uncertain of where he fit in amongst leagues of deities and celestial beings. Nowhere, usually. Not on their realm. Not on their parameters. Save for two instances, they ignored one another.

The beast landed near, close to one of the sheen and bauble conjecture of ice, with naught to offer but his own existence. They’d never favored that before either. He was silent, watching, waiting, for the inevitable to surge and lance; his unworthy, undeserving mass the reason they would receive only the looming silence of snow and ice. Maybe they can guide us she stated, but to what? Into Halo’s rites and rituals? Into anything at all? The words ghosted through his mind, like phantoms and specters, the apprehension pooling within him along waves, because he didn’t want to ruin this for them again.

Safrin? he called, waiting.
"who's gonna let you?"
they asked. i said
"who's gonna stop me?"

KIADA
you think that i'll be the dark sky
so you can be the star?
She follows them to the Shrine, ever diligent in her watch, in the consistency of one thing when it came to a new place, new adventures. Part of her is still wary of Ludo’s response for her previous shrine visit, of her failed quest. But she does it for them, to be with them, and so she breathes a bit easier with the knowledge that they ask for Safrin.

After all, Amalia is her Shield.

She lands somewhere between Amalia and Deimos, somewhere in the middle as she folds her wings along her back and lets her scarlet gaze remain attentive to the shrine.

Safrin

“My my, and aren’t we all a long way from home.”

As Safrin appeared through cracks of light in the air, a breath of warm wind rushed around them. Feathers were coated and chilly bones were instantly warmed as the goddess appeared in all of her starry-wonder. Though she flashed both Deimos and Kiada a warm smile, it was upon Amalia that her gaze focused, though perhaps not for the most obvious of reasons. Though they were all far from home that was true, both the Sword and the harpy had come far further than this, during their once upon a times. Amalia though? Never before had her feet (wings, paws, hooves) carried her quite like this.

“I must admit, though the cold can be rather deadly, there are few better places to watch the stars.”

the darkest nights produce the brightest stars
She hadn't realized how small she's felt until her goddess is before her, starlight materialized in physical form, beautiful and celestial and familiar. It makes something in the girls chest catch and then sharply release, eager aching and swift relief bringing a toothy smile to her broad feline face. Without too much thought or abashment the leopard surges forward, pressing her forehead adoringly against whatever part of Safrin she can reach, a contented purr rumbling up from deep within her breast.

Safrin... There's so much. Even her mental voice is breathless as she turns black eyes up to the goddess, wonder and awe glittering within. Jyoti coos her thrilled agreement, a flash of starlight leaving her blowhole. The ice goes on forever, and there's something beneath it, and I felt it - it was so old and large and incredible. Do you know what it is?

DEIMOS
So used to being spurned, the voice of the Goddess bewildered his senses, enough for eagle eyes to widen, for his mind to spin, for the unknown to come crashing down upon him all the more. Deimos was not often in any of their shadows, and the uncertainty layered against him, just as the cracks and fissures of light blinded, just as the warmth glided over feathers and plumage, just as the stars pierced within the day’s abyss. He had half a thought to hide away from it all, duck his head, unworthy chiseling its way through his foundation, a hard-fought insinuation always blending, blurring the lines of things he’d achieved and things left in the dust. But no blows rained down upon him, no extensions of his inabilities, no detachment in her smile towards them. Maybe he’d never understand. Amalia’s excitement and joy was a palpable thing, and he stilled, uncertain where to go or what to do, eternally caught in between.

A long way from home indeed; except it could’ve been a reflection of worlds they’d left behind (in death, in destruction), his sharpened gaze casting over the mountains once more, yearning to expand his wings and search through every inch, every drift, every crag, every glacier. It wasn’t the same, and it would never be – but something pulsed and pulled and called to his wintry heart and his chilling soul, varnished and cooled and defied. He wanted to stand upon a summit and howl. He wanted to preside amongst the ice and chisel.

But instead he stayed.

Amalia’s inquiries stirred there, and he wondered if he should say anything at all; rendered mute, silenced, in awe and in consternation. Perhaps the goddess did know about the primordial thing below the surface. Perhaps the deity knew something else about this world too – and the temptation clawed at him, the opportunity coiling over his senses. Or anything else about this land? Of value? Of worth? Of where they should go next?

KIADA

She doesn’t expect to see Safrin. She expects the shrine to go just about as well as the rest of them had. With no response, an air of note that they’d been heard, but not responded to. And so, in her feathered form, her scarlet eyes scan over the goddess of starlight, the being of whom Amalia is the Shield. A quiet nod is given, even if the goddess doesn’t look to her. They are a long way from home.

She can hear Amalia’s response, remains silent at least until Deimos speaks. Anything else about the land, and Kiada has to refuse to ask about the aurora, if it’s here too, if they could make a home in this harsh, beautiful land, how much she desires it and craves it. But instead, she remains quiet, huddling closer to Deimos in their feathered forms, comfort in her presence because she knows what Safrin had done to him while blighted, knows the feeling of being unworthy again and again.

Safrin

Receiving Amalia’s feline embrace with own palms, Safrin tilts her head back and laughs. At the same time she seems to open, to welcome the trio of attuned into the wide cosmic vortex of her mind, filling them with light of both mind and body. “Indeed. And much more to see yet.” She agrees. Humming a thoughtful sound, her fingers working just behind Amalia’s ears, she nods. “A creature of Rae’s. It is like...a bit of the earth got bored simply being a part of the continent and broke off, taking on sentience out of boredom.” It had all the makings of a child’s story, and yet the goddess seemed serious enough. “And now it drifts, and experiences simply being alive. It delights in mere movement and experiencing the passage of time in different places.”

Glancing towards Deimos, the goddess regarded him for a moment—seeing the man through the animal—before smiling sadly. “I do, of course. But it is not your home. The auroras you will see—“ She looked towards Kiada with a small shake of her head, “—will not be those you remember.” Sighing, she looked up to the sky. “Halo is a hard and harsh place. The formation of these mountains were originally caused by the rising-up of the mountain range that cuts through Caido and where its namesake resides. This place should have fallen away into the sea honestly, and is sustained largely now through magic. The ice genies and such grant wishes of a sort; always some sort of dark trade that sustains their magic.” She frowned at this, but concluded with a shrug.

The purr that emanates from the leopardess is loud enough for any to hear, a rumbling and unabashed sound that vibrates through her bones. Head pressed into Safrin's palms she whuffs contentedly, basking in both the celestial warmth and the physical contact of the goddess's affection. Is there a way to speak to it? she asks, but lets the subject slip to other worlds, to auroras and mountains where Caido resides.

Where...

...Caido...

...resides?!

Her head shoots up in sudden rapt attention, ears perched high atop her crown. Caido lives here? The Caido? It.... it's in these mountains? Black eyes wide with excitement and wonder, the leopardess claws with sudden fascination upon the ground. She thought Caido was... well, she never knew where it was. To learn that it still lives in the world, that it may live here-

-it takes her breath away.

DEIMOS
The light pooled against him, surging and imploring, a great, grand cosmos he’d never otherwise see or experience, stars and shades and constellations between nuances of the cold and glacial expanse – the notions and ruminations of another world humming into his form. He expected it to be unsettling, to be something readily defied, resisted, clockwork patterns of his distorted upheaval and revolution, but either his attuned instinct understood and or the reassurances of the celestial body settled into his chest. He could listen instead of clenching jaws and beaks and talons, ready to fight, ready for flight, a drumming of information coiling into his heart, into his chest, into his mind, gathering like breath and lungs and chilling, glacial realms he’d long since left behind.

Rae’s creature, sliding through the surface of ice and dark, emboldened depths, an eternal experience in drifting, in moving, and naught more.

The reality, the truth, the sagacity of this is not the Basin sliding through Safrin’s sad smile, and he knew, he knew, he knew, would’ve loved to have believed in its ether and essence being similar, being the same. Perhaps he was merely satisfied at seeing them, at experiencing them, the surging mountains, the mountain crag, cutting and sliding through Caido’s whims – should have fallen, should have slid, should have been something else except for the mercurial devotion of enchantments. He didn’t know what to feel – disappointment, understanding, comprehension of all the notions segmented and slashed – his eyes drifting from the goddess and to the great beyond. Trading? With who? piqued his interest more so than Amalia’s excitement over the god; to be expected, really. Who was orchestrating deals with genies? The kingdom? Something else powerful, potent? Or was he reading too much into it? A certain droning, Machiavellian hum filled his mind – pondering what they’d be exploring into next.

KIADA

She doesn’t expect Safrin’s acknowledgement, not in the slightest. But her scarlet gaze is bright, wide, watchful as she hears Safrin speak of the auroras, how they wouldn’t be the same. And yet, despite the smalls hake of her head, the small sad smile, there’s hope that bubbles within Kiada’s chest. The fact that they’re different don’t bother her. The stars here are different than the previous worlds she’s been in. But they didn’t have auroras except for Helovia.

It gives her some amount of hope that she can see the lights dance in the skies again.

Amalia asks of Caido, breathless and surprised, and Kiada remains silent through that. She remains silent while Deimos asks his own question. And she tries to think of any questions she might have herself. Only one comes to mind, however, and it causes a deep unsettling feeling to course through her gut. These ice genies, do they roam or are there places to avoid them? She absolutely doesn’t want to start a whole other bargain again. She hopes she’ll never come across one of them.

Safrin

"Not with any sort of language you possess, no. It speaks in the language of the earth, having been here for centuries. Your soul is simply too young to have learned that vocabulary yet. Music, it might understand though." Safrin said with a beautiful smile. "Most understand music."

Raising her brows with quiet amusement, the goddess nods at Amalia's surprise. "Indeed. It isn't quite a place set in reality, but the way mortals once accessed it was through the mountains." She said with a warm smile.

Glancing towards Deimos—the Sword's ever-quiet and stoic soaking-up-of-information a humbling thing to witness—she merely shrugged. "Anyone. Everyone. To pray at one of these shrines...you are as likely to encounter them, as you are me. More likely, even." Kiada's question is partially answered by this, but the goddess considers for a moment. "They do roam. If you find yourself in trouble one might just appear to help you out. For a steep price of course."

Music, she repeats, her own low rumble almost melodious in its own way, the purr that rises from her lungs permeating the air. Caido's presence catches all the breath from her lungs, however, stilling her mental voice as the others continue to spin their questions and learn about this place. Caido here, in the mountains. Caido, the absentee first god...

What must it be like, to meet such a being?

Shaking her head to clear it, the leopardess tries to collect her thoughts. Is there anything we can do for you in this place, Safrin? she asks instead, ever eager for purpose, to serve. Do you... do you know where another portal is? Or how to stop the Ascended from opening it?

DEIMOS
Languages of the earth, souls too young to fathom, to do anything but listen gave him pause; because perhaps they’d always thought themselves primordial too, multiple lives swarming around his soul, when they really had nothing, nothing, nothing on these primeval interludes. Humbling, sparks of nothingness suddenly curling behind his thoughts, unworthy, undeserving – only ceasing when music was included. He might’ve laughed, save for the company they kept, too stoic, too cautious, too apprehensive, too strangled in the gaping unknown.

Anyone and everyone trading for incantations, and anything else for that matter – roaming genies with prices in their palm and nestled enchantments ready for the taking – temptation and enticement lingering in the depths of those who would likely scrape along desperation. His glance skimmed over the outlines of the world again, narrowing, speculating, pondering how far one would have to fall to perceive an offer, devilish contracts brooding and brewing. Faith in his own abilities, in all of their capabilities, might be safety enough. But he wasn’t about to count an unknown void out – especially with experience in summits, no matter which world they were contained within.

Then, he didn’t have any inquiries (never knew truly what to ask) – absorbing once more, gaze flickering back to the goddess, stars and the cosmos riveting into the corner of his eyes, thinking he ought to look away, but Amalia’s inquiry had him wondering, pondering, all the more. Guardian roles and sacrificial aims, how far some would need to stretch, and if it mattered, if those things could be conquered at all.
