RExANNA
the penumbra
All things acquired, she had waited for the day to come. Deimos, having offered his help with retrieving the Magna Vermis, had also crafted a tank for the creature, an attempted means of keeping it alive while she gathered the other stone. As for the ice? Her first thought had been to Loren and his magic, having sent a note to see if he’d be up for it, before sending one to Deimos to meet her, to carry the tank and be there for her.

Though it was likely the Sword already knew she’d acquired the stone, considering she had gone with Amalia to retrieve it. But that was beside the point.

With a bit of help, they manage to make it to the Atheneum shrine, the closest to her home and the one she’d even Ascended at. Her hands find the little handholds along the sides of the books that aren’t quite like the others, and she pulls it apart to reveal the shrine within, dusty offerings left behind but she’s certain its there. “Here we go.” She says softly, a surprising amount of anxiety, but hopeful in the end.

Lady Voice, we’re here with the items required to regain my sight.” She asks quietly, reaching up to remove the bandana from her face – sure that Deimos had seen her without the bandana since he’d crafted it for her, yet unsure if Loren had seen the destruction caused as well.

we're all killers
Deimos committed to a conflagration of deeds to assist his friends – even wandering into the midst of the Voice. He wasn’t content with the notion, and last time he’d been near the shrine he’d thought about ways to destroy and dismantle it, but for now, his hands were full of the tank and the Magna Vermis, keeping him entirely occupied. His features were a blank, reticent canvas, no stark revelations hinging on their wares, on their expressions; just as nonchalant, just as reticent, just as composed as any other glacial day he might’ve spent, high up on the mountains. It was the look he’d occupy for now, the consternation brewing in his chest, curling through his mind.

For Rexanna he continued to tell himself, as he lifted the tank higher, as he maneuvered across the Atheneum, at the soft intonations and declarations by the Penumbra, echoing along the framework of dusty shelves and old tomes. For all her nerves, he managed to remain calm, strength and fortitude, resilience and spirit, chiseled into the twist and turn of his movements.

He didn’t say any prayers to the Ascended deity, to the being occupying the shrine, didn’t bow his head, didn’t do much more than become a still statue. The only plea or vow he might’ve made, in the brewing, bewitching silence, in the distortions of his machinations, eyes looking for the rock Amalia had snagged, was for Rexanna to regain her vision.

LOREN
Rexanna’s note had been relatively sparse on details, beyond ‘new eyes, The Voice, magic ice needed, meet at Atheneum.’ Still, that had been enough to pique Loren’s interest, so he’d shown up at the designated time. When he arrived, he stared at the captured worm, then shook his head, completely flummoxed.

Holding up a hand, he created a perfect orb of water, then froze it, ignoring the slight chill on his fingertips. "I'm here, and I have the ice." His voice came out softly. As she lifted her bandanna, the summoner's eyebrows rose, but that was all the response he showed. That was probably for the best, given that Rexanna had already prayed. Instead, the Launceleyn trained his attention on the shrine, eyes alert.

the VOICE
In reality's shadow the blind see best
For a moment the world flickers and dims, the narrow room within which the shrine was located growing abstractly dark for a moment before filling with brilliant blue light. Seated upon the shrine, the Voice's electric stare moved briefly from Loren to Deimos, before settling unsurprisingly upon Rex.

Leaping down as elegantly and lithely as a spry woodland deer might, the goddess moved towards her. One of the Voice's more interesting qualities was that she was of no particular height nor build; both seemed variable depending on what the situation called for. So it was that although she appeared delicate and small atop the shrine, standing before Rex her hands easily came up to the woman's cheeks, head tilted softly as she gazed across the ascended's ruined face.

"Quite the entourage you've brought with you." She chuckled. Hybrids, no less, which of course made them completely uninteresting. Not only were their souls marred by being attuned to the old ways, but there was little room for anything else. "But as they say, who's counting?"

Glancing at the items brought, created, and captured, the Voice nodded. "Creation was never quite my strong suit, you understand. I always did better using the tools I had at hand and enhancing them." She explained rather idly. The Magna Vermis suddenly was pulled from its tank, instantly going limp and lifeless. Its body was stretched and contorted as the Voice regarded it. Before their eyes (though not Rex's, not yet), pieces were pulled away and it appeared as though small synapses and blood vessels were being formed; not that anyone present would know what those were. In the blink of an eye the organic material turned silvery and hard, wrapping itself around the clear stone that was suddenly coloured a brilliant blue.

"Hmmmm...." The Voice's lips quirked in a smile as the stone turned to a brilliant shade of green. "How do you feel about...green?" The goddess asked with a grin, her own electric blue eyes flashing with love and creative zeal. Finally came the ice—magical processes could so heat up the internal components she'd created.

"Perhaps you two ought to look away. You know. Ascended eyes only." Hardy har har, but both Loren and Deimos would find themselves compelled to avert their eyes. Thumbs across Rex's face, the Voice whispered soothing words of encouragement. What no one would see save for the Voice, was Rex's skin peeling back with surgical precision, ruined bits of tissue and such removed, and two perfect if not enhanced eyes placed where the LongNight monsters had so completely taken Rex's first pair.

With a mild hum the hybrid was put back together; her lashes were beautiful and long, her skin perfect and pristine and of course, her eyes a now stunning shade of green.

"Tell me what you see..." The Voice whispered then, amusement coating her words as she stepped back.

Thank you.” She says initially, earnestly to Loren who has the other piece that she needs. And then she prays, with the two men at her sides, each with a piece she requires. And she can’t see the world flickering and dimming, before filling with light. But based off of the electricity in the room, she can feel her goddess there, feel the shift and change, and a smile breaks across her face. And when the Voice’s hands cup her cheeks, she leans into the touch, as though she’s starved.

Her goddess comments on those she’s brought with her, and Rexanna smiles with a small nod, a snort offered quietly. And she agrees quietly to the next set of commentary, understanding that crafting and enhancing were different – believing it to be similar to her transmuting magic. “I’m honored that you’re willing to do this.” She says, smiling gently into her goddess’ touch.

She can’t see the creation take place, the adjustments, the changes. She can only listen while the Voice hums thoughtfully, commenting on green, a thought of which Rexanna had never thought of before. She’d always been born with blue eyes, sapphire pools that matched her father and her mother. But this was a new start, a new chance. And she embraces it. “Yes.” She agrees softly, smile breaking a bit brighter.

She’s lucky she can’t feel pain, because certainly with all the pressure and everything of what’s happening, it’s definitely not pretty. But it doesn’t seem to take long, either, and so slowly Rexanna opens her eyes, squinting at first against the brilliant light from the Voice herself, from the shadows and shapes on the walls, and she’s overwhelmed suddenly with the view and the vision she has.

Tell her what she sees? “Everything.” The Penumbra whispers, voice wavering and breaking slightly despite her attempts to swallow it down. In place of her once sapphire eyes, emerald ones are replaced, and she can see everything again. See the world in that same crisp sharpness she had once upon a time. And without thinking, she reaches in an attempt to hold the Voice’s hand, head lowered slightly in her emotions. “Thank you, so much.

She lifts her head then, to look over at Loren and Deimos with a wide smile, letting them see the work that had been done. The new eyes given. The fixed life granted.

we're all killers
Dimming, flickering, ambient beams of light scoured and scourged; an instant sensation of not wanting to be there, of fighting, of rebelling, in the palm of his hands, in the jurisdiction of his chest. But he still stared, directly into blue light and electricity, a sneer yearning to appear and unfold, unbidden, along his features, a growl forming in his throat; none of it brought forth into the vestiges simply due to Rexanna. He watched and waited, listening, creation never the strong suit indeed, if he were to delve deeper into the lore circumventing the thresholds, the monsters rampaging at Long Night, things she’d crafted and experimented with taking hold of one of her own; his glance held to the Penumbra next, briefly. Then the worm was gone, removed from the vessel, the tank empty and forlorn without the thing within to keep it useful or necessary – gone in a matter of moments. Portions were pulled away, as if filed and flipped and curtailed, filaments plucked, all notions of the magna vermis’s stature depleted, gone, utilized for some other accord.

Then there was something about green; and then he was no longer permitted to even witness further events – no matter the amount he deigned to refuse or resist, gaze falling to the floor, to the remnants of the world around him, Atheneum collections and books disjointed along dusty shelves. A snarl rippled through him, and that didn’t make a true appearance either, silent while the Voice worked and Rexanna received; listening, listening, listening again to the whispers, to the sentiments, to the scrapes and sounds of alteration, of newly formed brambles and nettles.

When he was allowed to view anything again, it was Rexanna’s green eyes staring back at him, morphed away from the blue, from a gaze he’d always known. A hundred inquiries corded their way through him, never granted an audience, a vocalization, because of her smile – a sigh settling into his bones. At the very least, she was fixed, she could see, and one more horror of LongNight had been mended.

LOREN
Loren nodded in acknowledgement of Rexanna's statement. "You're welcome." However, his voice came out quietly. As the room dimmed before The Voice appeared in a flash of blue light, the summoner found himself studying the goddess as she spoke about Rexanna's companions.

The Launceleyn didn't move from where he stood, simply watched as the worm was deconstructed. Next his gaze settled on the stone, which turned green with The Voice's words. Finally, he found his eyes were forced to avert for the actual implementation. When he looked up, Rexanna could see again, though her eyes had changed color. He flashed her the briefest of smiles, before settling in to wait patiently as she finished the conversation with The Voice.

the VOICE
In reality's shadow the blind see best
Surprisingly perhaps, though not for those who truly understand just how much she adores her creations, the goddess allows her hand to be taken. Her fingers squeeze softly around Rexanna's as the queen surveys the world anew; her eyes restored with perhaps just a bit more than there had been before.

"I'm sorry for what the creatures did to you. " The Voice whispered soothingly, tucking away a strand of Rex's hair behind her ear. "Know that whatever brokenness the world tries to force upon you, that I will always be here to fix. You will forever remain bright and perfect."

the penumbra
She doesn’t expect the Voice to let her grasp her hand, and there’s a slight hitch of surprise that crosses her when the Voice squeezes her hand back, her thank you and her glances around to survey the sharpness of the world she’d missed for far too long. And she focuses back on the Voice’s electric shape, the goddess’ voice soft and apologetic for what the LongNight monsters had done. She leans into the touch slightly, like a child starved, as her goddess tucks her hair behind her ear.

Thank you.” She says again quietly, softly, hushed – unsure how she can repay it, or if she can. “Is there anything I can do for you to show my gratitude?” She asks, eyes alight and curious – wondering if there’s anything that she can try to do. She’s already shown Deimos and Loren that the Voice can fix their brokenness, that the Voice is almost always there for her, almost always around to help her when she needs it. And she’s entirely grateful for that alone.

He listened; not much else to do in the wake of compelled movements and Voice encryptions; could understand, the way the words flowed and overwhelmed, how others might be scorched and entrapped, and why he’d remained so irreverent for so long. He’d never had the same, not anywhere, not in Helovia, not in Isilme, not here either; faith in his own abilities and capabilities, until Safrin had drawn forms out of his blood and strength – pondering the wake of these matters in his skull, inclining his head only to Rexanna, the same stoic expression remained on his features, deep breaths fizzling and fuming through his chest, holding the empty tank, waiting, waiting, waiting, useless and ineffective all over again.

LOREN
Now it was just getting awkward, and Loren shifted his weight from side to side. He was witnessing something that was probably supposed to be a private moment between Rexanna and her goddess. So, while there was nothing the summoner could do to turn off his ears, as The Voice took the now-green eyed woman’s hand, he glanced at Deimos. Then the summoner averted his gaze respectfully.

Clasping his hands behind his back, he couldn't help his interest from being piqued by Rexanna's question. So, while it was probably not the wisest thing he could do, he shifted his gaze slightly so he could watch the exchange out of the corner of his eyes.

"That you are whole again is all the thanks I need. That you came to me when you were wounded and trusted in me to make it alright, as all I will ever need from you." The Voice said, the pad of her thumb stroking beneath Rex's now enigmatic verdant stare.

It's a bit of a pity that she brought her entourage with her; there are other things that the pair might have discussed. But that was alright. Unlike the fickle gods of old, the Voice always welcomed conversations with her child.

"I will let you get used to your new sight...once you are, do come and find me again." She whispered, as if this was a close secret for only Rex's ears. Pulling back, the goddess gave the new-queen a dazzling smile, her electric gaze never once flicking back to Deimos or Loren.

With a final wink, the Voice disappeared in a stream of sparks that left behind the smell of petrichor and would dazzle the retinas for minutes to come.

Eager verdant eyes look to the goddess who had restored the sight, smiling brightly to her in the overwhelming flood of emotions as the Voice strokes the pad of her thumb. And she can only dip her head in response to the original suggestion, but as she requests that she comes and sees her again – alone – Rexanna understands, and lifts her head and actually looks to her goddess again, smiling her own bright smile. “I will.” She promises quietly, letting the goddess go, watching as the sparks fizzle and dissipate.

She turns, then, to look to Deimos and Loren with bright smiles. “Thank you both for coming with me. Let me know if there’s something I can do for you both.” Her green gaze drifts from Loren to Deimos, the brightest smile along her face for the first time in weeks. “Now let’s get out of here, huh?” She winks, stepping back from the shrine to close the bookshelf once more, excited and pleased to move on.

Dissipation of the goddess, and with that, the rigidity in his spine was not so prominent, the taut lines and tethers anchoring him to the floor not so ensnaring and binding, free to glance, free to wonder, free to escape. Something unsettled ruffled along his skin, skimming over and along the surface, discomfort, apprehension, and unexplainable venues – but he cannot ignore the notion that the Voice had returned and revitalized the Penumbra, no matter how much his machinations, calculations, might try. Bright smiles, a renewal, instigated the slightest curve of a smirk along his mouth, nodding his head, but asking for naught. “You are welcome.” He’d rather see her proud and powerful, potent and determined again, than the echoes of last season – impalements, lifeforce dwindling, a seizing, searing mess of what the world could shape and shift. Eager and fervent to evade the world and shrine behind the bookshelf, he applied to her wink, maneuvering out and out of the boundaries.
