Amalia
she wants the silence but fears the solitude
she wants to be alone and together with you
The room they move into is beautiful, if deadly, sharper edges than she has ever seen glittering with shades of bronze and blue. Amalia finds herself distracted from Ingrid's talk of mage glass, only distantly picking up descriptions of the mysterious stuff. Her gaze is captivated by the unique cave; only when she mentions the great clusterfuck does the owl look back, her curious eyes mirroring Loren's request for more information.

Again the group reaches a crossroad, two options branching out: forward or to the side. Jigano asks for input once more, and Loren and Ingrid give conflicting replies. From her place on Deimos' shoulder the owl simply shrugs, the mental equivalent beating through the bond: either way is fine.

Ingrid’s information was both interesting and useful, and Jigano kept his ears perked behind him to listen. He grinned at her trick of sending people to the dragons, though he couldn’t help but wonder if white dragons here were as prone to nastiness as the ones of his homeworld… ”Could you tell us a bit more about the dragons?” he asked, with perhaps just a smidge of personal interest in his tone.

And then came the pun.

She couldn’t see it, but he was grinning proudly as he snickered in appreciation. ”Oh, you’ll fit in with the Loreseekers just fine,” he declared happily. If you can make it a little farther we can stop to rest and see about repairing that rip, too.”

Loren’s questions would likely also have interesting answers, and Jigano went back to listening, to see if Ingrid had any more to say about Caido history beyond the barrier.

When they reached the next choice in the path, Ingrid voted for left (or at least, not-straight), but Loren’s point about the narrowness of the passage being potentially problematic for some in their party (Zuriel) was well-taken, and Jigano nodded. Amalia gave no more feedback than Deimos had, so Jigano gestured for them to continue on, passing the little side cave by, hoping they could return to it another time.

They walked a ways as the path wound around, the tunnel quiet around them but for their own sounds of conversation and passage. As so often was the case the cave was almost eerily silent, the only lights those they had brought. Everything seemed to be going well for once, but just as they passed a curving turn in the tunnel a loud crack sounded from beneath Zuriel’s hooves, echoing before and ahead of them. They had only a moment to react as the ground began to fall away beneath their feet and above them, cracking and crumbling down into a lower chamber.

Amalia in her owl form fared the best, dodging the rocks dislodged above with nary a feather so much as bent. Unfortunately in so doing she lost her grip on Deimos’s shoulder and was separated from the General in the confusion, ending up in the front of the party and to the right side of the fallen rocks.

Deimos ‘s reactions served him well as he threw himself back to avoid the hazard. His sure footing helped him dance around the treacherous stones both above and below, but he ended up separating from Amalia and most of the rest of the group, including Zuriel. The unicorn might have weakened the floor, but nothing was wrong with hooves that nimbly leapt ahead of the floor as it fell away beneath her feet, carrying her to safety on the far side with Amalia.

Ingrid ‘s pun must have pleased the spirits in the stone, for this time she was able to make it through unscathed – if only barely. Maybe it was skill, or maybe it was luck, but she stumbled back against Deimos and avoided taking any harm from the rocks, not even to her clothing. It did, however, leave her and Deimos separated from the others.

Loren , in the center of the group, found himself in a bit of trouble as those before and behind him hampered his routes of escape. He wasn’t quite fast enough to evade, but he managed to make it most of the way to the front edge of the collapsing section before it fell away beneath his feet. Luckily for him the fall wasn’t far, and though he would slip and scrape himself against the rocks he managed to avoid any serious injury.

When the dust settled Deimos and Ingrid were unharmed on one side of the fallen rocks, while Amalia, Jigano, and Zuriel were on the other side. The ground and ceiling had collapsed and stones had fallen down into a chamber below, filling it until it created an uneven tumble of rocks ranging from three to ten feet below the level of the previous path. Loren had fallen down into the collapse, and was now eight feet below the edge of the newly-created pit, a little worse for wear but able to get out if he was careful. A slender ledge of unbroken ground remained on one side of the fallen stones if people wished to try and cross to one side or the other.

”Do you need any help?” Jigano called to the three in or behind the rocks.

Ingrid has been asked about White Dragons and the Great Clusterfuck.
Deimos and Ingrid are on one side of the rock fall and need to cross it to rejoin the others.
Amalia and Jigano are on the other side of the rock fall.
Loren fell down into the pit but managed to land on top and is only slightly hurt. He needs to find a way back up to the path (he sees no access to the chamber below now that the rocks have closed it off).

As the stones began rumbling fucking again, Loren let out a snarl, and did his best to avoid them. Unfortunately, he was so focused on the rocks falling from the ceiling that he didn’t pay enough attention to the rocks beneath his feet. As the floor fell away, he found himself tumbling down with a curse.

It wasn’t a deep hole, at least, and he landed on top of the rocks, so he didn’t even have time to try and cushion his fall. Instead, he dusted himself off, healed his scrapes, then peered at the rockfall. ”I’m alright. Can we please turn back now though? And if anyone needs healing, give me a shout. I can heal you from wherever.” His voice came out shakily, and he took a deep, shuddering breath to calm his nerves.

Then, however, he felt his annoyance spike, and his magic with it. He’d had quite enough of rocks. A summoned bear appeared on top of the pit, on the side with Jigano and Amalia. It reached its front paws down, and he grabbed onto one then ordered it to lift him up. His arms and fingers strained from the grip, but hopefully it would be enough to get him out of his predicament.

So apparently falling rocks are the DM's go to common in these caves. Amalia jolts as the boulders begin to tumble, losing her place on Deimos' shoulder and shifting back to leopard form. Lithe and swift she dodges a stone... only to realize she has landed further into the cave, on the other side of the fallen rocks.

As the others begin to plan and discuss Amalia turns away, her eyes shifting to a barn owl's so she might peer into the dark. She aches to go in further, to learn and explore, but does not know the extent of the injuries and can do nothing to clear the rockslide. So she takes a careful few steps forward, round ears occasionally flicking back to keep track of the decisons of the rest of the group.

Send a heartbeat to the void that cries through you

If Zuriel was apologetic about the entire series of circumstances, she didn’t show it – a huff to her breath, minimal concern when Deimos was stuck behind rocks and granules again – common place, habitual nowadays, raising a brow and waiting for him to emerge.

Deimos only suffered with a petulant, forbearing sigh, footing sure, true, and certain, but Ingrid’s not, stumbling back and ensuring they were both separated from the group by the clatter of stones and rubble. Jigano’s voice over the following throng ensured the General that no one else was harmed on the other side, the only concern he might have melded or molded. We are fine established after glancing over Ingrid, patting down the rest of his clothing; nothing sore, nothing aching. More of an irritant than anything else, incapable of exploring until they all assembled again. His eyes glanced over the ledge remaining, but likely wouldn’t need it – shifting to his eagle form, tawny and sienna plumed, gliding where he could to make it to the other side, trusting Ingrid would be able to find her way along the protrusions and rocks.

If stupid jokes helped her fit in, Ingrid could make them all fucking day, but first, there were actual questions she had to answer.

"Did you just ask me to talk about dragons because of that thing with Coffee? Very funny, Jigano. They're huge, talking, flying gem-hoarders, and they like to be left alone. That's all I know. The Great Clusterfuck is my name for the magical disaster that turned Halo into a freeze-your-ass-off death land because "Great Cataclysm" was already taken. We don't know exactly when or how it happened, just that the population here dropped almost as fast as the temperature. Oh, and Neron is a bum who does more eating and sleeping than 'Warden-ing.' I know you all hate his Mort-blessed sister-wife, but at least she's trying to get something done."

Then, as if to prove her earlier point, even more motherfucking rocks tried to attack her. Ingrid (to her horror, because this is a Helovian legend we're talking about, here) stumbled back into Deimos. "Oh shit, sorry," she exclaimed, trying to avoid slipping as the ground gave way beneath her feet. When the dust settled, Jigano and Amalia were separated from them by the cave-in, and Loren... Where was he?

”I’m alright. Can we please turn back now though?" Ingrid's concern vanished, and as usual, was replaced by cheap wit.

"I'm glad you're okay! But Loren, why didn't you mention you're actually a hybrid of three races? You have Abandoned healing, Attuned shifting, and well, I guess you must have made a pact with the voice, because your ass-ended up in that pit!"

After Loren called a fucking bear and Deimos birded off to reach the others, Ingrid took a breath and began to edge along the side of the pit, knowing full well that it would probably go poorly. As a pebble dislodged by her foot tumbled into the hole, Ingrid froze, turning to Jigano.

"Okay, I might maybe need help. Possibly."

They very quickly learned a few important nuggets of information from Ingrid: dragons here could talk, Halo was transformed by some magical catastrophe, and Neron was not exactly held in high regard by all of his people.

And Ingrid had an unexpected soft spot for the would-be Tyrant. That gave Jigano a moment’s pause as he glanced back at her – just as the floor gave way beneath them and they had other things to worry about.

When the dust had settled they were separated, but no one had been more than bruised. Jigano stepped back as a bear appeared out of thin air, flicking a startled glance towards Amalia before realizing it was one of Loren ’s. The summoner was able to make it out of the pit with the bear’s help easily, healed of all but his bruised pride as he was set on his feet on sturdy ground once more. ”Just a little farther,” Jigano asked him coaxingly, seeing that the other mage appeared unharmed after Healing himself. ”We’ve come this far already, it seems a shame to turn back so soon. Besides, I’m worried that the first rockfall might have damaged the entrance,” he admitted, showing Loren the map he’d been drawing. The rocks that had fallen from above in the first cavern they had dead-ended in had been below the cave where they had come in from. ”And if we go back we’ll have to make it through those sharp crystals again.“ They might have to anyways, but not if they could find another way out…

Deimos reassured the others before coming to join them, his flight unhampered by further unstable stones from above as he made his way over the rock-filled hole in the floor, deftly avoiding the unstable footing with feathered finesse. He was able to rejoin Amalia and Zuriel without incident, though perhaps he had left Ingrid a little too soon…

Ingrid was always able to find a little levity in any situation, it seemed, even if her pun this time elicited an amused groan from the Provost. ”I dunno,” he said dubiously. ”That one seems a bit unpolished compared to your other gems, but I’ll granite you points for effort, at least.” He mostly expected Deimos to ignore their banter, but was fully prepared to duck a swat from Loren or Amalia. Then, however, the new Loreseeker’s voice came back with a bit less humor. Not much, mind, but enough that Jigano turned to find her balanced precariously with the ledge crumbling beneath her as they spoke, threatening to drop her into the pit as well. The bard reached out instinctively with his magic to stabilize it, shoving at the tumbled stones in the pit beneath to build them up into a wider platform for Ingrid to cross on. There was sweat on his brow as she stepped safely to the other side and he let the earthen construction go, the boulders rolling back to the previous places with rumbling clatters.

Getting Zuriel back across the pit would be no easy feat, so for the moment it made sense to continue onwards, led by Amalia ‘s owl eyes. She would be able to see beyond the edge of the lantern’s light, into the darkness ahead where the tunnel curved first back and then to their left before it straightened and smoothed out. Again they came to a T intersection, but Jigano showed them the map he’d been drawing. The right-hand path likely led to a deadend, unless the tunnel suddenly rose or descended below the level they’d been walking on. It made more sense for the moment to go to the left – though they could come back and explore that turn later, perhaps, especially if they needed to find a way back that bypassed the rockfall.

The right hand path soon led them to a three-way choice: right, left-and-straight, or left-and-turn. Amalia was able to use her enhanced vision to see that, just beyond the lantern’s glow, the right hand path led to a dead end, but something gleamed whitely against the wall. Jigano looked over to his Loreseeker friends (and friends of the Loreseekers, Deimos and Zuriel), and raised a brow. ”Preferences this time?” he asked, hopeful that they’d recovered some of their spirit after the easy walk since the second rockfall.

If Amalia had found Ingrid questionable before, her comment about Zariah tilts the scales further toward dislike. Glancing back sharply at the woman, the leopardess stifles a quiet growl, though her displeasure at the Tyrant's praise is clear in the Attuned bond.

Her temper settles as they continue on, curiosity winning over old grudges and irritations. As they reach another fork in the road (whichever one we stopped at, Shark is hella confused) the baker peers into the darkness, her large ears flicking curiously. There's something bright on that wall, the leopardess comments, tilting her head toward the right hand tunnel. I'm going to go look closer.

An avid listener, he managed to cease an impending eyeroll in regards to Zariah and her getting something done. Oh, she’d accomplished many things in her short reign, including tyranny and inspiring rebellions, but he gave none of that any particular voice, not bothering to cut across the void of all the follies, all the trials, all the tribulations that had been laden underneath those overbearing sanctions and frictions. It wasn’t worth reliving.

Instead he loosened the briefest of sighs as they were all clustered back together, as he shifted back into his human form, eyes cast in the various directions, Zuriel at his side with another haughty flip of her head. True to Jigano’s prediction, he ignored the banter altogether, gaze catching over where Amalia drifted, lifting his lantern so the light spread further into the reaches and regions. He maneuvered closer, his answer in movement and motion, following after leopard sanctions and curiosities, the bright sheen laden along the wall.

While Ingrid obviously had no fucking clue what was going on with the magic animal feely bond, she did notice Amalia's glare. Well... fuck, she thought. Ingrid had hoped to be on good terms with the woman who'd received a book (and apparently a shield) from Safrin, but where Zariah was concerned, a blessing from Death himself outweighed Amalia's disdain. Plus, the owl-woman didn't seem to care for any of Ingrid's shitty jokes, so she probably didn't have a chance to start out with.

Luckily for Ingrid, Jigano was a more forgiving audience, lobbing a pun right back at her as he helped her cross the cave-in. "That one seems a bit unpolished compared to your other gems, but I’ll granite you points for effort, at least.”
"Really? Fuck. I shale have to do better next time," she replied. "And, uh, thank you," she added.

She followed the others to the fork in the cave and nodded in agreement when Jigano relayed that the power couple wanted to go right.

The bear was enough to lift Loren out of the pit. Not quite in the mood to laugh at Ingrid’s joke, the summoner simply stared at Jigano. Then the Launceleyn stared at the map. Finally, he nodded. It looked dicey there for a while, with Ingrid crossing the chasm, but she made it across without incident.

Dismissing the bear, he fell in at the back of the group. This time, Amalia and Deimos took the lead, and Loren trailed behind them. The baker and the General went to the right, taking their light with them, so the summoner followed a short distance behind.

It  gave him a chance to whisper to Ingrid, at least. "Zariah is Neron's distant cousin, actually. It's important for you to know that she was cruel to many during her brief reign of the Hollowed Grounds. So I'd be careful who you mention her too." He gave the other new Loreseeker a friendly smile. "Thanks for the information." Then he shifted to a honey badger and prowled ahead closer to the rest of the group, hoping this form would give him some more protection when the next danger inevitably revealed itself.

"That'll do," he grinned to Ingrid and her 'shale' pun, his grin softening as he gave her a wink. "And you're welcome. Couldn't have our new recruit getting stuck between a rock and a hard place!"

To the right Amalia went, seeking the pale glimmer of something that stood out from the darker stone and ice around them. Deimos 's lantern behind her threw the reflection into sharp focus: a pile of yellowed bones lay upon the icy ground of the dead end - a literal dead end for whatever poor creature had become lost and trapped within the caves.

No, not a creature.

A person, the skull unmistakably human. Every scrap of cloth and leather (much less meat) had long since been carried away by the opportunistic scavengers within the caves. It was impossible to say whether the skeleton had been there a few months or a few decades, or longer still. As they examined it there was no sign of injury to the dully gleaming bones, beyond the nibbled toothmarks of rodents and insects. "Perhaps their light went out and they starved to death trying to find the way back," Jigano mused somberly, all joking forgotten at this reminder of the dangers of the Fangs. "Would you say a few words, Amalia?" he asked, voice quiet. He held up his Soul Catcher lantern and sang softly if Amalia prayed over the lost one, calling any remaining scrap of wandering soul to the lantern's light.

When they were done he tilted his head to the side as he looked back at the way they had come, and the unknown path beyond... And gave a regretful shake of his head with a sigh. "We've been down here for hours. We don't have much time before the sun sets above, and then getting back to the portal will be dangerous in the cold. Perhaps we can check out that turn I hurried us past on the way back? It might get us closer to the entrance," he suggested. "And if it's blocked, well, we're old pros at shifting rocks by now," he said wryly to Deimos and Loren with a grin.

Back they went to the last intersection the bard had disdained before, following a long curve of flowing stone that might once have been a river bed. Stalactites and columns grew in profusion towards its end, eventually fusing, and for a moment it seemed as though they would have the grim task of getting everyone back over the rockfallen pit without setting off another cascade.

Then something caught Loren 's eye, a deeper shadow within the rock behind them that seemed slightly out of place. Upon investigation it was a narrow passage, mostly hidden within a fold of flowing stone. Jigano investigated, finding a short squeeze through an awkward passage that was both low and narrow (and a proper nightmare to fit Zuriel through, though she could just barely made it) that popped him out in a middling cave with smaller 'chambers' formed within, almost like a stone stable. That, however, led him back to a place they would recognize: the tunnel just west of the crystal forest. He hurried back to meet with his friends and share what he had learned.

"We can all try and squeeze through here and then back through the crystals," he offered. "Or we can brave the floor collapse, where we know we'll all fit for sure, but the instability in the area might cause more rocks to fall. But once we're past the crystals we can hopefully regain the entrance without much trouble - or at least, only a little. Or we can split up," he added with a grimace. "Though I wouldn't suggest it. What do you want to do?"

Loren stared at the bones for a brief moment, then glanced away. As Jigano and Amalia performed the last rites, the summoner remained silent. At the bard’s suggestion they turn back, the Launceleyn nodded, walking through the tunnels with a wary eye. Perhaps that’s why he spotted the tunnel, or maybe it was just luck.

He shifted back to human. ”Hey all, there’s an opening here. Looks like a passage.” Tilting his head he listened to the white-haired man’s suggestion. ”Why don’t we try to fit through it. Anyone who can’t, we’ll circle back around from the other side to help them cross the rockfall.” Regardless of what the majority decided, Loren would shift back to honey badger to make his escape from the caverns.

The glimmer turned out to be far less of an enigmatic discovery, and more of a forbearing, ominous warning: skeletal remains, just bones in their final resting place, and his curious features grew more resigned, nonchalant, and reserved. He said naught in particular, thoughts waylaid to Jigano’s statements, having seen hundreds of these in his lifetime, allowing his lantern to continue casting the light until they were finished with whatever necessary procedure or funeral rites.

The beast only glanced back at Jigano when directions were forthright, a necessity, the sun shifting away, the cold threatening to ensue. He maneuvered along with them, following pathways again, Zuriel at his side, irritated and annoyed for some reason. The options for their latest traversing followed thereafter, and he merely nodded at Loren’s suggestion, silence embodying his existence now, prepared to accomplish whatever means or task was necessary. Tying his lantern to his bag, he shifted again to an eagle, smaller, an easier fit perhaps, drawing the satchel with him amongst talons, granting Zuriel a look; if she couldn’t manage, he’d find a way for her.
