He had heard the song of the Fangs when he had left the portal to find the Citadel on at least two occasions. Rumors overheard since seemed to indicate the potential for the mage glass Loren had spoken of in their depths. It was a faint hope, but it was also what the Loreseekers did - explore new places and learn what they could. Even if there was no mage glass they might learn more about this lethal new region, or find a way to make use of the depths that were protected from the howling winds and snows outside the mountain’s skin.

Jigano had called those of his guild who wished to assemble to the Spire before leading them through the (damned) portal and off to the other side. He had bundled up warmly, in all his winter clothes, leaving an offering of a bag of fresh apples to the guards before he forged out into the open snow. He had noted a direction the last time he and Loren had made this trek, and he made his way towards a singing cave that was rimmed with icicle stalactites and nearly hidden in the blowing snow. As they made their way through the cave’s entrance and into the snowy darkness beyond he pulled out a lantern, lifting it up to light the way as they found a tunnel in the back and edged into it. Though narrow at first it soon widened out to a more comfortable ten feet across, and the wind’s howl was cut to little more than a whistle, though the cold remained. The path snaked both downwards and to the right at first, and Jigano copied down its path as best he could with thick gloves on his hands.

After a while the way ahead of them seemed to open up, the tunnel splitting to the left and right. The path to the right was a little narrower and continued to angle downwards, while the path to the left stayed flat as far as the lantern’s light reached, broken only by the natural contours of the stone. Jigano loosened his scarf, shaking the snow off as he looked around at those who had joined him, gesturing to the choice they had to make. ”Which way should we go?”

This is a Loreseeker Guild PQ to explore part of the Fangs! Loreseekers get first dibs on spots. Although not lethal, there is potential for danger and harm in this quest. (This quest is NOT plot advancing.)
When given a choice of direction, everyone can vote on which way to go. Majority will decide whether to go left, right, or straight ahead.

This PQ will move on every 48 hours OR when everyone has posted.

Loren was excited to actually be invited on an excursion. Also, you know, eager to find out if the rumors about mage glass were true. Bringing along pile of firewood as his offering, he’d nodded at Jigano, then stepped through the portal. Dumping his load with the rest of the offerings, he shifted. Sure he was dressed warmly enough for the frigid temperatures of Halo, but he preferred the warmth of his actual fur and hadn’t mastered the ability to partially shift yet.

Following the bard into the cave, the summoner’s claws marked the walls every once in a while, leaving a trail of scrapes for them to follow. Although they were following a straightforward path, it was a good habit to get into, especially if something happened to the map. Indeed, they came to a fork before too long, and he shifted back to human. "I say right." Whichever way they chose, he'd shift back and mark the turn with a claw.

Ordinarily, Deimos wasn’t a part of any Loreseeker rituals – his machinations and pursuits were rendered for militia barracks, defensive, or offensive maneuvers, calculating devastation and ruin rather than genuine sagacity. But Jigano’s request for artisans (likely due to the creation contortions rampaging through his blood; useful even if the rest of him wasn’t) amongst the exploration, Amalia already intending to go, and a host of possibilities lent him towards arriving at the Spire alongside the Shield and the rest. Zuriel, curious for a host of different matters (because she’d never truly ventured beyond either) came alongside, a haughty turn of her head indicating she’d like to see another try and stop her – the General carrying his bag of holding and horde of potential supplies and necessities. He extended an offering of venison again when they clambered through, as he held his breath for the vision of mountains (different he had to recall, had to remember, not his own, not the ones he’d left behind, not the ones destroyed and mutilated), as he followed the trek down into caves. The Fangs; as if it were about to bite and snap upon them all.

The chill didn’t bother him. The snow didn’t bother him. It was familiar and routine, like primordial beacons, like distant comrades in arms, buried beneath runes and darkness, and a sudden pining for things he couldn’t have any more filled his heart, his lungs, before dissipating altogether. His attention was a necessity, not a deviation into the past. The Sword’s eyes noted pathways, the way they wandered, reminders of the underground too, when they’d sought out ROUs or Emmett’s forlorn body; lifting a lantern as they lingered and wandered, the traces of light billowing. At the notations for a choice in directions though, he studied more, glancing over the way floor angled, or remained. “Left,” he proffered, shrugging at Loren, not particularly fussed with either route, course, or bearing.
For now we stand alone, the world is lost and blown
And we are flesh and blood disintegrate with no more to hate

Trigger Warning

Ingrid, bundled in many layers and with a bag of meat and matches in hand, had met them at the mouth of the cave. It was a fucking trek from the Citadel, and she showed up red-faced and out of breath, not that you could see her cheeks underneath her ski mask. (And no, she wasn't planning on robbing a bank. Probably.) On her way, she unhappily mulled over what Zariah said about the Provost and the Spire. When she finally arrived, however, and saw this stupid-looking geek-squad (Jigano, a weird-ass badger, a unicorn, and a very, very large human), she couldn't help smiling.

Once they arrived at the first fork in the cave, Jigano spoke up:
"Which way should we go?”
Ingrid was more concerned with the fact that he'd loosened up his scarf before saying it. "Put that back on right. Don't you remember what I said about freezing to death and getting eaten by L'il Ms. Lighting Mc'Queen over there?" She glanced at the others. "Food chain," she explained.

Speaking to Jigano, the two unknown men spat out opposite answers. Nice, guys... I think my odds of becoming fucking bear lunch down here just went up by 70%. Ingrid waited for the unicorn to answer, but after a few moments of silence, she realized the mare's voice probably wasn't coming. Then, she noticed the badger-blonde scratching the wall. Oh, duh.

"Why don't we just pick a wall and follow it? That way, we systematically search the whole thing, and we don't become lost, starving cave-cannibals. Plus," she turned to the badger, "you really don't want something big and dumb to think you're marking your territory down here." She knew the Attuned had some kind of magic animal bond, but would an angry cave-dweller with a peanut-sized brain really stop gnawing on a leg to talk about its feelings?

Amalia
she wants the silence but fears the solitude
she wants to be alone and together with you
She holds a level of relative silence as they begin their venture into the depths- a silence which can be easily attributed to her position in Deimos' hood, the otter curled up for warmth against the Sword's thick hair. As much relief as the leopard skin offers, she finds this to be the only way the cold can become truly tolerable. Besides, she argued as they set off, her stomach has been hurting since the night before, leading to a lack of sleep, and she needs the extra rest of they have to face any serious difficulty.

Perhaps a weaker series of excuses, but she feels that she's earned a bit of comfort, and would challenge any of them to disagree.

It isn't until they come to their first stop that the girl emerges from where she has been comfortably dozing, small head appearing on Deimos' shoulder, a sleepy yawn showing small, sharp fangs. Adjusting her eyes to a barn owl's she peers into the paths, listening through now leopard like ears as the others discuss and confer. I don't think we need to worry about predators, she remarks wryly, glancing sidelong at Jigano.

With another stretch and a low unhappy grumble the girl leaps at last from Deimos' back, shifting as she does to land on the ground in luxurious leopard skin. Clearly disgruntled at being awoken, she sniffs the air a moment before glancing to the downward sloping right. This way, the Shield suggests with a push of her head, looking expectantly up to Jigano and waiting for him to decide.

Introductions were made (offscreen) as they began to walk, so everyone would know each other’s names at least.

Deimos was becoming a staple of the bard’s adventures, which given the General’s bond with Amalia and useful talents had made him a good man to ask along, even if he wasn’t a Loreseeker, nor had any desire to be. Jigano was glad to see him, especially when Sam didn’t arrive at the appointed time, and he hoped that Zuriel would have an easier time fitting through the tunnels here. At least she could heal Deimos if anything bad happened, now that he knew of the difficulty the big man’s magic laid upon him in that regard.

Amalia’s presence was the most welcome of all, though he wouldn’t be so uncouth as to admit it to the others, and he sent her a warm pulse of welcome in greeting when she poked her head out from Deimos’s hood.

Loren had, of course, been invited along as an official Loreseeker, but also for his strong magic and useful ideas (and that very important survival ability they had talked about). His idea of marking the trail as they went, for instance, was an excellent one, and Jigano nodded gratefully to the honey badger for making sure they’d be able to easily find their way back.

Ingrid was the least known quantity of the group, but also the one with the most experience in Halo. He couldn’t help but smile as Ingrid scolded him, obediently rewrapping his scarf and doing his best to speak to her through it clearly. She was the only one of the group who couldn’t communicate telepathically, and he made a mental note to remember to pass along anything the others said to her as needed. Her idea was also a good one, in different circumstances, but he shook his head briefly. ”That would work if this was a labyrinth or a simple man-made maze outside,” he agreed, ”with a single start and exit, or center goal. But we don’t know if this is multiple interlocking cave and mine systems or not, and if it crosses over and under multiple levels of itself as we descend, it could make that method moot.”

Her other warning earned a sharp-toothed grin hidden behind warm wool and cloth as he sent a pulse of amused agreement to Amalia – and Deimos as well, the general no slouch when it came to fending off Caido’s fearsome beasts. ”At least we have three healers along,” he said innocently, nodding to Zuriel as well as Loren. ”In case anything goes wrong.”

Two votes went to the right, one to the left, and one abstained. Jigano nodded and gestured for them to follow Loren and Amalia’s lead and the quintet trekked down the narrower tunnel as it went from ten feet wide to seven, and then five. His lantern’s light was a steady white glow in the dark as the tunnel curved around – and kept curving, until he suspected they were going back the way they had come, but they were also going steadily down such that he thought they were almost below where they had begun before. The tunnel widened abruptly into a small bubble of a room, and it was difficult to see the back wall as they stepped into it--

That was when the rumbling started.

Whether the result of their footsteps or some other shift in the cave system it hardly mattered in the moment. What kept their attention was the sound of rock and ice shifting and cracking above and in front of them as the ceiling started to cave in. ”Get back!” Jigano called, using his earth magic to keep the entrance to the tunnel they had just left cleared for their retreat.

Jigano avoids the rocks and keeps the route to the tunnel open
Loren would have taken a glancing blow from a stone, but Amalia protects him!
Amalia avoids all the rocks, and knocks an incoming rock away from Loren!
Deimos avoids the rocks
Ingrid is struck by several rocks

Was anyone hurt enough to need healing? Will you try to move the rocks and continue on, or go back the way you came and try the other direction?

Send a heartbeat to the void that cries through you
Relive the pictures that have come to pass
Amalia eventually emerged from his hood, Ingrid joined their party, and their assembled gathering was off, the familiar outline of traversing underground, within caves, pulsing at his ruminations. Some ventures had been far more successful than others – but he gave no hesitation or apprehension, maneuvering quietly, awaiting whatever was to come. Their sojourns had already taught him to presume and assume nothing, just prepare as much as possible (predators might’ve been a welcome change, over other notions – the slaying of monsters something for his vehemence to grasp). The rest of them seemed bemused though, and he merely added his calm, composed stature into the fold of attuned abilities.

They wandered down, Zuriel at his side, though occasionally sniffing at portions of the caverns, until the rumbling began. He paused, eyes narrowing, familiar with the sound of shifting rubble, boulders, and anything else that could have begun crumbling from the ceiling; instantly bracing, gaze flickering over their comrades and constituents. Amalia was safe, avoiding, knocking things aside, he’d managed to remain unscathed (Zuriel arched a brow, shocked), but not the unfamiliar one, Ingrid. “You all right?” His voice echoed along the chamber, ready to offer Zuriel’s skills if need be – before marching towards the rest of the fallen contortions, standing directly behind Jigano. “We could always move them,” a shrug; been there, done that, old habit and routine by now – if they wanted to continue down this route, or face it as an omen. Either way, he could assist, waiting for the go ahead.

Before Loren could respond to the unknown woman, Amalia did it for him. Alright then. Apparently there was a whole crowd of them. He just gave the unknown woman a toothy grin, then turned to follow the group as they went right.

Far too soon for his liking, there was a familiar rumbling sound, one that was going to start haunting his dreams, and he tensed. Unfortunately, he wasn’t ready for the rocks, though Amalia blocked it from hitting him. Thanks. I owe you one. Shifting back to human, he approached the unknown woman, who’d been hit.

”I’m Loren. I’m one of the three healers Jigano mentioned, and I can heal you, if you’d like.” Assuming she accepted, he’d briefly place his hands on a shoulder and chase away any damage from the rocks. At the General’s suggestion, the summoner looked over, shaking his head. ”No reason to risk it when we’ve got another path to explore. Plus I've had my fill of moving rocks this season. I vote we take the other fork, see where it leads.” He glanced at the bard, wondering how the Provost would decide.

Amalia

Attuned for nearly a year and a half, Amalia is well adapted to her animal senses, and thus the rest of the world. Perhaps it is for this reason that she senses the rockfall before it occurs, her hair standing up abruptly on end, her claws biting suddenly into the earth. Without any real thought or calculation she leaps into action, protecting the person closest to her - Loren - with a swiftly projected shield of starlight, the stone bouncing harmlessly off the light.

As Loren goes to investigate the injured Amalia lets her body change again, taking on her otter form to allow her to investigate the fallen stones and search for pathways through. Turning back to the others, she shakes her head. Taking wing as an owl once more, she flies back to settle on her lover's shoulder. It would take a lot of work to move them. I agree, we should try the other way.

And then, to Deimos' mind alone, a pulsed and playful: Guess you were right.

Ingrid trudged along at the back of the group, grumbling internally. It still would have kept us from getting lost, but suurreee, let’s put our trust in gut feelings and the magical powers of friendship. As if the labyrinth was punishing her for trying to bring algorithms into something that was supposed to be fun, the ceiling above her promptly collapsed in a shower of rubble.

Ingrid’s instincts kicked in as she bolted, and unfortunately, her instincts were the one part of her that still thought she was a sixteen-hand warmblood. Her feet slid out from under her, and she found herself face-down as stones bounced off her back and inflicted several fist-sized bruises. She looked up and spat out a mouthful of icy cave-dirt. Gross. But I'm not dead, right? She nodded in response to Deimos's question. Luckily, she didn't have to find out how much it would have hurt to move, because Loren came over and offered to help. The aches vanished. "Thanks Loren. I'm Ingrid, the designated moral support," she said. Her tone was playful, but she really was starting to wonder why Jigano had offered to let her come along. "And I'm definitely all for going away from the rockslide." Also, she couldn't move one of those rocks if she tried.

Once everyone was free of the rocks and no one was in danger anymore, Jigano eased back on his magic, letting the last of the rocks he’d deflected settle gently to the ground. He smiled wryly at Deimos ’s eternal stoicism, glad of the big man’s unflappability in these situations they kept finding themselves in. The offer to move rocks was met with a thoughtful nod; they hadn’t seen a clear passage beyond, but there had been something at the back of the chamber that might have been a narrow passage through the rock… or perhaps simply a trick of the shadows in the lantern’s light.

Amalia had saved Loren from a nasty bump, and he sent a pulse of gratitude and admiration at her swift and graceful rescue of the other man, tinged with curious surprise at the starlight shield she had displayed. A new power? Or something else? Something to ask later, he hoped, in calmer circumstances. Her suggestion had merit, if only because their path had just begun, and it would be wise to conserve their strength if they hoped to explore further into the caves in search of the elusive rumors of mage glass and any other wonders they might document in the Loreseeker chronicles.

Loren was unscathed thanks to Amalia, but Jigano was proud of how his colleagues were working together to help each other. The former Launceleyn passed along the good karma by offering to heal Ingrid, and the bard relaxed a little more when she accepted. He voted with Amalia again, and Jigano grinned at the reminder of their last project moving rocks in the Spire. He nodded, wondering if it would be a tie this time as his attention turned to the last member of their little crew.

Ingrid was the most battered of the group, her pluck and spirit not quite matched by the swiftness of her body, but bruises could be swiftly mended by Loren’s magic, and soon she was up and good as new. Deimos’s concern and Loren’s Healing were both excellent reminders that down here they were a team who all had to rely on each other, and he listened gravely to her vote before turning to give Deimos a wry shrug.

”Let’s check the other path,” he summed up, lifting his lantern and leading the way again. ”And while we’re at it, Ingrid, can you tell us whatever you know about these mountains and caves?” Since they had a local guide, it made sense to see what she could teach them about her home.

They quickly retraced their initial path, walking upwards back to the first level and returning to where Loren’s claws had marked the wall a foot off the ground. The left hand path was wider and more even, continuing on without much obvious incline. It took a sharp turn to the left fairly quickly and they walked down a narrow, curving gullet of stone that allowed for only single-file passage until it opened up once more, the walls of dark, icy rock pulling away but leaving large, sharp growths of great rainbow-hued crystalline stone behind. The lantern light caught it and refracted among the massive outcrops of colorful ore. Purplish blues predominated, but with flashes of coppery red and bronze mixed in the sight was dazzling in the formerly dark cavern. The group would have to pick their way carefully through the small forest of the beautiful mineral, either on two legs or four, or using wings or magic, or relying on reflexes and luck to avoid getting cut. Jigano paused to touch a crystal lightly, frowning as he ‘tasted’ it with his earth magic. ”It’s… more metallic than anything else,” he said slowly.

The strange ore fell behind them as the tunnel continued, curving sharply to the left once more, and they were faced with another choice. Jigano raised his lantern high, but it was hard to see far in either direction. The path ahead looked wider, while the one to the left was definitely narrower, the shadows playing odd tricks on the eyes in that direction. ”Straight ahead, or left?” he asked his Loreseekers – and Deimos – with a furrowed brow.

{Image: Fangs_Maze2.png}

Ingrid is asked to share what she knows of the Fangs with the class. As she walks through the crystal forest she manages to avoid cutting herself, but her coat catches on a jagged chunk of broken ore and rips as she maneuvers past it.
Deimos ’s reflexes save him from harm, and he even manages to keep his clothing from tearing on sharpened outcrops.
Loren in any shape is sure-footed enough to avoid drawing blood, but he may find some of his fur sliced off in an unintended haircut from passing too close to some of the formations, though his clothing doesn’t get more than scuffed.
Amalia is the picture of feline grace, untouched by the beautiful stones in whatever form she chooses.
Jigano also moves through the crystalline ‘forest’ with nary a nick on him or his gear.

Ingrid was surprised when nobody made fun of her after she tried to wrestle some falling boulders. She wasn't quite sure how to react to the non-ridicule, but luckily, Jigano asked her a question to break the silence. "Well, you're not the first to come to the Fangs looking for mage glass," she said with a shrug. "But you are unusual in that you tend to ask for help nicely. Every so often, some Abandoned pricks arrive in the Citadel acting like they own the damn place: 'Surrender the mage glass. Show us the mage glass. We'll kill you if we don't get mage glass,'" she mimed in a high and whiny voice. "I like to tell them the white dragons hoard it and wait for them to come back looking all crispy," she continued with a chuckle. "It's not a lie. They are supposed to hoard shiny things, but still, let's hope we don't run into one," she added. "Except for the dragons and mage glass inside, I honestly don't know much about the caves. I mean, until the portal opened up, mage glass mining was really the only reason anyone came here, and I'm not that interested in finding mage glass since all it seems to bring is trouble. But if there could be signs of life here... of civilization from before the great clusterfuck... I want to see that."

As the group passed by some shiny crap, a piece of the brilliant ore ripped her outer layer. "Well shit," she said, feeling the temperature in her wrappings drop. "What did I do to rocks to make them hate me this much today? I mean, really, it seems like they abh-ORE me," she said. It was a weak joke, but it might be just dumb enough to get a laugh.

When Jigano asked for votes, Ingrid saw a better opportunity. "I never vote straight ahead," she piped.

Send a heartbeat to the void that cries through you
Relive the pictures that have come to pass
No one agreed with him on this sentiment either, and he could suddenly tell he’d likely never have a part in the Loreseekers – too embedded in maneuvering, in motion, in routine habits of danger and peril. Zuriel snorted from behind, a rich contortion of laughter in their bond, and after admiring the shield of starlight (with only the briefest smirk chiseled towards Amalia, something like pride, for her), he tilted his head into plumes and feathers along his shoulder. Not that it matters he motioned to her in turn, their split affirmations strictly, swiftly, outvoting him twice. He wouldn’t have minded the work, the movements, the fortitude, a restless sensation of might unfurled and unleashed, discovering what lurked below and beneath – not to be cast, unfortunately. So they moved along.

The path he’d preferred earlier was next, and he lifted his lantern too, allowed more light to be shed and cast, maneuvering, following behind Jigano’s maneuvers. Minerals and brightly-hued stone varnished the walls, his gaze catching upon portions, pondering over their means and measures too, hands tempted to see if he could pluck them away from their confines. He held back, ensuring he could avoid being cut along narrowed strips and contortions, Zuriel close behind, the trail of amusement still piercing through the companion connections. He would’ve rolled his eyes had Ingrid not begun to expound on mage glass.

Or at the very least, how often others seemed to want the rumored distinctions – and he could fathom why, with its perceived stories of strengthening those with magic. Because wasn’t that what they always strived for, more power, more prestige, more prowess, to face down their enemies, their adversaries, whatever bewitching, eldritch thing came waltzing into the world next? The pun made after cuts and bruises made him curl his eyes and features away, struggling to either not groan at its terrible stature, reminders of Jigano in earlier intervals, or actually laugh. If she needed further support, especially after twice now getting rendered in unique fashions, she’d only have to ask.

The provost’s inquiry of where to next fell upon him, and this time he only shrugged – indifferent, since none of his previous votes or opinions made much of a difference, stringing himself back into silence.

Loren swore when there was a close shave with a crystal stalactite? Stalagmite? ”For Frey’s sake…” It was almost literally a close shave, given that he'd just gotten an unexpected haircut. However, they made it through the treacherous cavern without any real issue beyond cosmetic problems. He breathed a sigh of relief.

As they walked, he’d listened carefully to Ingrid’s words about Halo. He couldn’t help but frown at her explanations. He’d known vaguely that there were mage glass and dragons in the Fangs, but it was good to have it confirmed. Chuckling dutifully at Ingrid’s joke, the Launceleyn’s joy slipped away soon enough. ”I can fix your coat if you’d like. If you don’t mind me asking, though what do you know about the ah, great clusterfuck?” He tilted his head and gave the Halo native an appraising look. ”And what do you think about the Warden?” He spoke quietly for fear of attracting the dragons Ingrid had mentioned.

As they reached another fork in the road, he frowned again. Strangely enough, he found just his fingers shifting into claws. Looking down at them with a pleasantly surprised look on his face, he reached out to mark the direction they’d come from. ”I’m worried about taking a group this large down such a narrow passage. I vote straight.” He gave Ingrid an apologetic smile.
