He’d committed the necessities to memory. Leaves (all different levels of decomposition). Efas herb. A bone with fertile soil. Water from the oasis during a full moon. They weren’t recited so much as painstakingly driven into his mind, and when his duties were either completed and he had some amount of time before roaming back to the infirmary, he set out for the woods – the hours of daylight extended, giving him ample opportunities before dusk. Crimson intricacies stared back at him, contortions of ichor and blood pulsing, beating, from the hymns and roots of the trees, something familiar, customary, in the overflow of tension, of past, fleeting days, of lives from before, and subsequently after, enamel he’d always known and understood (terror, beacons of demons, you cannot have happiness for long).

Except for the determination grinding at his bones, except for the mettle, the obstinance, the tenacity unfurling in his movements.

Bag on his shoulder, Zuriel at his side, and weapons tucked within or on his form, he was a maneuvering contortion of daring and provocations, searching for the right assortment of fronds, branches, and brambles, either those awaiting decomposition, or at the beginning stages of life, his gaze to the canopies, and then to the ground below.

do not fear the dark, wolf cub, for when the sun leaves the world,
There’s no rest for the wicked, she supposes, as she leaves the bakery in good hands while she leaves to take a short break. The trip takes her and Auni to the Greatwood, a need to stretch wings and to breathe in a bit of the warmth – that and she almost prefers the incessant sun over the heat and warmth of the ovens adding to it in the bakery. Even if it did leave her with a relatively warm, nice scent to walk around in.

She’d taken to keeping an eye on the bakery while Amalia gets better, but she hasn’t seen Deimos since the events of Fiat Lux, hadn’t really seen either of them aside from the chaos that was that day. Part of her does feel bad for it, regardless. And so when she stumbles across him as she flies above and Auni spots Zuriel in the distance, she can’t help but circle down to shift into herself, all her scars on display as she shifts back into herself and her and her luxere follow quietly behind.

What’cha looking for? She asks quietly, no small amount of amusement lingering between their bonds.

Zuriel’s ears were far greater than his – a warning indication as they flickered back and forth, as her head rose to stare into the canopies, along the sky – so when a familiar form of harpy eagle drifted downward, shifting, unfurling, unveiling, there was no amount of dread or apprehension. Comfortable, in the essence of their carefully-forged family, a sense of ease in how they clambered, how they roamed, and he arched a brow at her appearance and approach, at the amusement stoking amongst bonds. Because he hadn’t been occupied by anything bemusing in days.

Because the last time he’d seen her she’d been amongst the broken. Like a majority of them, flailing around the edges and intervals of something meant to be enlightening and uplifting. He meant to ask her how she was feeling - but presumed it'd be met with a scoff.

While the unicorn ensued a light nicker to the luxere, the Sword drifted onward, swallowing down a rancorous sigh, lined with too many overwhelming, overbearing things, his eyes only seeking hers once before winding along branches. “A leaf.” Plenty of them around, so the comment likely sounded completely asinine. Were it anyone else, he wouldn’t have given any explanation, content to remain aloof and nonchalant, let the world think him a fool or distant, reserved, withdrawn. “I received a quest from Safrin. She asked for leaves in various stages of decomposition.” Not to be taken lightly either; he couldn’t fathom her being satisfied with him picking up a clump of the fronds and deciding they were enough. He maneuvered forward, glimpsing at particular ones, looking for something designated straight in the middle of life: neither completely withered nor full of fervency and zest.

do not fear the dark, wolf cub, for when the sun leaves the world,
Auni has no problem settling in beside Zuriel to continue on this strange walk, happily content to remain for as long as Zuriel can tolerate him. Kiada, however, turns her attention to the General, to the Sword, a grin spanning across her face before a hum of amusement leaves her as she shrugs. “A leaf?” She repeats, in case she hadn’t heard correctly. But ah, she had, because he continues on and mentions that it’s for a quest for Safrin – and that has her dark brows drawing together in her own small amount of confusion.

I see.” Pursing her lips slightly, she bounds up beside him and starts squinting to the ground. “Which stage are you looking for now?” She asks, turning her head to him with a tilt of her head. It has to be for Amalia, because the alternative could mean that Safrin is either messing with him, or he’s given into something… Strange. She’d been there before and she doesn’t wish to repeat past mistakes. But still, she’s here to help, she’s curious, she’ll look for a leaf if that’s what it takes in the end.

Her head tilts toward Zuriel briefly with a small smile and dip of her head, however. "Thanks for healing me." She offers to the unicorn, reaching up to scratch at her neck before turning back toward Deimos with a wink. It extends to him as well, but she's too stubborn in this moment to say so.

The Sword expected the teasing, the amusement spiraling along the surface, and were it not for a more serious proclamation and goal, he likely would’ve laughed at the situation as well. “It is for Amalia,” came on another rumble, probably already guessed and estimated – since he wouldn’t have marched towards Safrin’s shrine again for himself. Other assertions and predilections scoured his mind for a moment, rummaging in his bag to ensure he had some others already collected, insinuated, tilitng his head to study their measures and platitudes, their curling fronds or intact positions. “Something new.” The beginnings of life, green and verdant, leaflets beginning to soak up the sun.

His eyes peered along the edges of canopies, where branches extended, where boughs didn’t break, pondering upon their offerings, gazing over different ranges of decay and demolition – the heat not doing much to aid in his acquisitions. Zuriel turned her head to address Kiada as she thanked and acknowledged the healing efforts (and Deimos gave no indication of how much he’d been crushed and damaged, heart clenched in his chest, seeing her lying there like that – and then after). The unicorn granted her a nod, leaning into the scratch, would’ve smiled and grinned if she could, instead there was a generous toss of her haughty, regal head, and then continuing on with Auni.

So instead of miring himself into continued, darkened corridors and avenues, instead of dragging his soul through the shadows once more, he corresponded into something lighter; intentionally poking and provoking. Amalia and I are engaged.

do not fear the dark, wolf cub, for when the sun leaves the world,
That it was for Amalia, alleviates some of the curiosity around the reasonings why the Sword was out here searching for leaves for Safrin. It seemed ridiculous, seemed strange to her that the starry goddess would require such things for anything else other than Amalia. But she grants him a nod regardless, letting her smirks fade a bit into a small amount of understanding. “I’ve been working mostly at the bakery during the day and the Monster Hunter’s Guild at night so she doesn’t have to worry.” She offers quietly, in case Deimos hadn’t known.

In the terms of something new however, it has her peering into the boughs of the trees above them, searching for something green and vibrant with life. She comes up short for now, though, and is distracted regardless by the words that enter her mind along the Attuned bond, enough to cause her to falter in her step and squint at him for the lie, the joke within the words he’d offered. And when she finds none, she can’t help the bright girlish grin from crossing her face, aiming to dive into him for a tight hug.

That’s amazing, Deimos. Congratulations! She offers back, swarming her end of the bond with all her excitement and happiness and joy that she can’t quite contain within her, breaking at the thought of it all, how she – while blighted – had asked about their own wedding once upon a time, how he’d choked with the question in the air, how Amalia had laughed.

He hadn’t known: sunken back and forth into his guild and barrack duties, into wandering in the midst of the infirmary, in dragging himself home when it was necessary. Kiada’s efforts towards the bakery were something to be acknowledged and cherished: still kept running, smoothly, efficiently (he had no doubt), in Amalia’s healing and absence. It came almost on a sigh of relief, something else they didn’t have to worry about in the daily comings and goings, in the constant swarm of damage, ruin, and oblivion. “Thank you,” he nodded; and he was sure to allow the gratitude to wind along their bonds, the press of appreciation and accord for her efforts. “How is the guild coming along?” Curious, mostly for the sake of her responsibilities, if it was too much, if it wasn’t enough, if monsters were thick on the ground and needed to be slaughtered.

Zuriel did her best in peering through the leaf litter on the ground; though he wondered if it was because she was half-inclined to eat anything she managed to find. As his eyes meandered, studying, scrutinizing on their wandering and walking, he’d still yet to see anything fresh, alive, and vibrantly new. There were many with touches and signs of summer heat thick on their veins, collapsing, sweltering in the sun, dried out, browning in their humid haze.

Then he was completely distracted by the Harpy’s embrace from his side, arms reaching around ribs, by everything else thereafter, idle contentment between the rampages and onslaughts. It was difficult not to be overcome with the shards of ebullience and rapture; though his came out in a sharp grin, in waves of more gratitude. Still guarded, still reserved, because of moments later, temples falling, frames in need of healing. Nothing else has been planned yet. A shrug, an admission; other notions and proceedings needing to come first. The only thing he'd managed to get done at all was acquiring rings (blessings to arrive for the Shield's when he'd completed that portion of the sojourn), and Safrin's agreement in arriving to see the nuptials.

do not fear the dark, wolf cub, for when the sun leaves the world,
She gives him a small girlish nod to his thanks. “It was the least I could do, I thought.” She muses quietly, gaze flickering along the ground for leaves that might suit what he needs. As for how the guild is going? Well, good. “It’s good.” She says quietly. “I offered to help Loren and Peter go explore Halo for mage glass for the Warden.” A quiet thought, unsure if they’d find monsters along the way – but it was something, something to do and help with, something aligning it.

But she’s colliding with him now, in all her excitement and happiness and pride, hugging and keeping him tight, despite his guarded nature, she can feel it through the attuned bond that connects them. I’ll make a cake! She declares, knowing it’ll be nothing like Amalia’s cakes, but perhaps the Shield might appreciate the effort that went into it regardless. But she settles herself enough, pulling herself back to his side as Auni sniffs at more leaves along the ground with Zuriel, and Kiada’s gaze flits back to the trees above them, squinting and absolutely happy for the two of them.

Also…” She trails off, uncertain how to bring it up. “I met a man named Harper.” She keeps her head focused up in the trees, unable to look at him, unable to hide the slight crimson blush to her cheeks. She doesn’t know what to expect from him, if he’ll even respond to it, but the awkwardness is coated on her end of the bond, her uncertainty that she accidently sends over to him.

Movement and motions, all of them busy and maneuvering from one place to the other, the world never ceasing, never stopping, to give them a moment to breathe. He was content with the knowledge that Kiada was applying herself in other regions and motives though, nodding in consideration of hunting down mage glass. They’d done something similar down in the Fangs, a network of caves that hadn’t amounted to anything except rock falls and dead bodies. “Good luck. And be careful.” If he said it out loud time and time again, would it even matter? Those had been his final words to Amalia before she ventured off to the Sanctuary; and the balance had tipped heavily away from any of those insinuations. Hadn’t mattered; had dug deep into opposing lanes and routes.

Kiada might have been holding him together presently. A harpooning, entangled edge lanced over his bones, and a part of him felt like sinking, while everything else moved forward, onward, amongst familiar pathways, etching their lines in the soil, desperately trying to convey and commit. Her excitement pulsed in waves of warmth, and he tried to grip onto it as best he could; hadn’t ever spared a thought towards cakes. Sure as a notion of acceptance, the uncertainty and gravity beating like a drum in his head. Zuriel looked over, and he didn’t meet her speculative eyes. It’d been his fault for bringing it up anyway – rare pieces and pulses of the future, things to look forward to, if they could all somehow manage to mold everything else back together. The unicorn narrowed her gaze at him, but then lifted her head, returning to the search.

The subject alteration caused him a snippet of hesitation again, head swindling back down to stare at the top of hers – wondering just how far these dramatics would play out too. Because there was no way to know or understand how all of this would measure; Ru’in not-withstanding, a whole assemblage of inner workings and calamities, deceased moments continuing to spiral here and there. “Really,” was all he supplied, clearly waiting for her to proceed in the reflections, reserving judgment when he had naught else to go off of but a name.

do not fear the dark, wolf cub, for when the sun leaves the world,
I will.” She assures Deimos, a small pulse of teasing sent down it – but based off of her track record thus far, well… Things hadn’t always gone well. In fact, they’d gone worse more often than good, but she has tried her best and that’s what mattered in the end, right? That she continued to try and try, stronger now than she was last LongNight, better than she was before. It’s almost as though it’s a trial run before LongNight approaches, to figure it out and see where her limits were.

She’s thankful for the shift in conversation to her excitement, to the idea of cakes, and his acceptance of it – already planning something in the back of her mind among the design of stars and snowflakes, of shields and swords, of worlds and pieces put together that otherwise never would have been. And it was precious, in a sense, to think that she could have a hand in it – to thrive and grow and begin something anew for them in her own little way. She’d never been a baker or a crafter before, but Caido had taken her in ways that Helovia and the Rift hadn’t. And it was… Nice, a breath of fresh air.

Speaking of, she tells him of Harper, while she looks to the trees and scans them, searching for something as he comments quietly to her own conversation topic. She ducks her head slightly, reaching to compel a few birds to sift through the treetops to find anything green and bright and new. “I was supposed to dance with him at Fiat Lux, before everything. He came to the Guild to see how I was doing after. We danced then instead.” She dares a glance over to him with a small smile.

A promise, a title to convictions even if it damned and doomed to go awry, something to place faith within before it all was blown to cinders. Another nod, already trying to stave off the multitude of ruminations encircling, enclosing over him, desperate to remain clear-headed while they marched through leaves and underbrush, desperate to remain whole and composed while they reeled around subjects.

His plans for the wedding had been bare-minimum at best; save for Safrin, everything else had been put on hold. So he’d permit the excitement and zeal around cakes, around things he’d once helped orchestrate for two others – ring boxes and festivities – the happiness and contentment that had seemed to fill the entities, even if for only a day. The Sword hadn’t imagined anything of Kiada’s magnitude in calculations or machinations – would’ve likely savored it had he known – too absorbed in the tasks before him. Glee and exhilaration could come later. The beast watched his bonded meandering, continuing to scope out the scenery, the verdant nuances, nothing coming close to what they required. The bitterness swelled, threatened to defy.

He choked it down, down, down all over again, listening instead about this Harper individual, pondering just what exactly all of this meant. A warning? A sign? He knew what dances at Fiat Lux led to, in his own experiences, so a wavering snort landed somewhere in between. “And you enjoy his company?” Or was there more? Did he even want to know?

She lets the thoughts of the cake drift in favor for the conversation over Harper, the uncertainties that lie within the man at hand. He’s… Kind to her, nice to her, so different from Ru’in and yet similar in ways she can’t exactly place but she can see. And as she focuses on compelled birds, waiting to see if they find anything of interest, she contemplates his question as well.

I think I do.” She says quietly, thoughtfully. “He’s charming and nice, a lot different than Ru’in was.” She purses her lips slightly before she hears a call from the trees and gives Deimos a wicked grin. Shifting into her vulture form, she takes to the skies, following where the birds were at, finding the bundle of bright new and fresh green leaves, plucking a few with her beak before slipping down toward where Deimos remained, aiming to land upon his shoulder as though he’s some sort of wicked pirate, four leaves in her beak to see if they’re good enough.

Will any of these do? She asks, scarlet gaze vibrant against the white and black of her feathers, head cocking as she sticks them in his face, her end of the bond wrought with childish amusement.

Ru’in; ghosts of past, present, and undoubtedly, the future. He listened as she briefly described this Harper character, and Deimos could only wonder if there was some damning league pressing and foreboding again, or if he was just being dragged into this apprehensive space and state. Maybe everything would be fine. Maybe it would all crumble into dust. Maybe it would meet somewhere in the middle, and Kiada would be happy, and content. It was interesting to hear her not place Ru’in into either the charming or nice category, but he hadn’t known the boy well. Deimos had perished well before they’d begun their stories, and then Ru’in had done the same.

But then she was gone, compelled and summoned by her flock. Left to his own devices for a moment, he turned back into the void, glancing again for any significant leaves with their greenery still attached, still adorned, with a feeling of life (so much harder these days). He didn’t expect her to come landing back upon his shoulder, the press of her talons sinking into his clothing, into his skin, and he rolled them to fend her off.

Except there were leaves in her mouth, and he gently snagged them out of beaks and grasps. There were several bright and vivid, but with a touch of brown, as if they’d already started peeling away from junctures of earth. But one in particular caught his eye, and he held it up to the sunlight, the slightest smile fixed on his face. “This will.” Vibrant, fresh off the vine, without the decaying ends. Thank you.

He rolls his shoulders to try and wave her off, but she doesn’t go anywhere — parroting atop his shoulder with leaves within her beak; angled and aimed for the Reaper turned Sword. She’s careful as she hands them over, letting them fall into palms for inspection, watching as he chooses which ones are good enough for the task of a goddess.

And when he finds one, she pulses happiness to him through the bond, reaching to pick at his beard playfully with her beak before removing herself from his shoulders before retaliation can be granted. You’re welcome! She chimes through the bond, shifting into herself and turning her icy gaze back to him. “Things will get better, Deimos. And if they don’t there’s always another way.” A wink to him — her own recollection of his words when she’d fallen apart during LongNight.
