Another day, another venture into woodlands, searching, uncovering specifics and leaves, Zuriel hovering once more while he roamed, while he took offshoot paths. Deeper and deeper into timber and sunshine, peaks of solar rays sliding through boughs and canopies, a quiet ambience despite any ominous contortions to the eaves. Several times he paused, checking on the confines already in his bag, studying and examining a variety of fronds, but none matching what he required for decomposition levels. Perhaps he needed someone more well-versed in herbs or sagacity towards the signs of wither and decay – besides the way he could embody death and damnation – never a scholar of healing attributes or notations. His efforts had always been towards the opposite; only Zuriel’s existence insisting any mending, soothing attributes rampaged or ran in his sanction. But it’d been well established he’d do anything for Amalia, and finding specific leaflets was naught compared to her wellbeing, health, and fortitude. He could, and would, do far more.

Sometimes it was nice to take a break and just... be for awhile. To remember where one came from, and where the roots were. Jigano had stolen an afternoon to walk the Woodlands with his favorite herbal from the Atheneum, Isuma stalking through the underbrush nearby as she dutifully hunted down flinthoppers. He paused occasionally to examine a heat-stressed plant, feeding it his magic to perk it up so he could compare it to the notes in the book he held. Sometimes he would collect the plant, or parts of it, to go into carefully-wrapped paper in his satchel, other times he would move on, leaving it in peace. He could replace what he harvested at least, usually leaving behind two or three when he took one, little islands of green amidst the dry tinder of summer.

It wasn't so much a noise as the absence of it that made him look up, a little island of stillness off to his left where something had disturbed the local animals to wary watching. For a moment there was nothing, then a flicker of movement caught his eye, a familiar dark head moving through a beam of sunlight. Isuma was already bounding over to chirrup a greeting, so Jigano followed, quietly subdued as he made no attempt to hide his approach, giving the big man a nod of wary greeting. "Deimos," he said softly. "Hello."

There was a note signifying calm and composure, almost like a warning, ensconced in between the unicorn and man, and the latter lifted his head from his perusal and examination, curious about the omen. His eyes landed on the familiar companion first, before following through upon the Sage, and he billowed a sigh through his chest – uncertain of its weight or bearing. “Jigano,” he extended instead of anything else he could’ve said. He hadn’t seen the Loreseeker since the colossal weight of the Temple had come down upon its occupants, upon Amalia, and healing measures hadn’t been enough. It was why he was out here in the first place: striving, trying, attempting to mend and assuage in the nuances of goddess interactions and directions. He’d also kept himself busy, traversing back and forth between barracks, guildhalls, the infirmary, and then returning to the cycle thereafter, not falling, not drowning, purposefully skimming over the surface of multitudes, of machinations, of ruminations threatening to consume. Occupying, not thinking; conducting efforts and actions like stalwart patterns, like traces of thoughts and pretenses. Maybe Jigano had been doing the same.

A variety of questions seared and seethed on his tongue, behind his teeth, but he didn’t grant them a voice. Instead it’d been mere acknowledgment, and uncertain whether to permit anything else, he simply turned back to the brush, searching for a particular leaf. Zuriel bobbed her head towards the friendly griffin, amiable and amicable towards the bonded, but shifted her own piercing gaze upon the provost with an unsettling, weighty wake.

A greeting that acknowledged his existence, nothing more nor less, but it wasn't vitriol and bile-filled condemnations and tables turned, as he'd half expected. Jigano nodded, grateful for that silence, as Isuma fluttered up to chirrup happily to Zuriel and he paused to consider what came next.

No request for his company had been forthcoming, no offer of aid in his own endeavors extended, and it left him uncertain how to proceed. Deimos turned away soon enough, however, a silent dismissal if ever Jigano had seen one and so he turned hesitantly away as well, returning to his own search for recognizable leaves and the plants which bore them. He had just flipped his book back open when he spotted a familiar stalk of white flowers rising near Zuriel's hoof. He nodded amicably to the unicorn before kneeling down near her and reaching out with his magic to spruce the plant up as he compared it to its page in the book. Once it was green and healthy again he reached out to harvest its black berries, collecting them in small jar from his pack.

Nothingness and silence when he expected some discourse; it was the bard after all, but perhaps with the way everything had sunk and tarnished, it was the way of the world now. To fall into hushed platitudes (a habit and routine of his anyway, regardless of the season or multitudes of catastrophe), to seek out naught, to drift aimlessly in their stunned, shocked stupefaction. His eyes flickered back to the Sage’s actions, Zuriel lifting her hoof away from some ivory petals, though he noticed a look of haughty disdain crossing over her features, and let that go too. Maybe this was an interval of allowing moments to simply settle into their structures and adherences, to not seek, to not condemn, to not grind and pummel and maul when he so wanted to. A cycle to reflect upon mistakes and actions, to strive and become better.

An olive branch, in the midst, when his gaze hadn’t yet pierced upon things he required. “Have you seen a leaf slightly withered?” The request, the inquiry, might’ve sounded incredibly bizarre – it felt ridiculous leaving his mouth. “I am looking for some in various stages of decomposition.” Again, likely not enough information, and he furrowed his brow, struggling to put everything into words, deciding it was better off in attuned boundaries. A quest, from Safrin. And if that angered, irked, or rankled, a mending, assuaging semblance thereafter. For Amalia.

Deimos had always been a man of few words and many silences, one who kept his thoughts to himself more often than not. It had been a source of friction between them before; the General's thriftiness with his thoughts, and Jigano's seeking and prying after tales and tidbits, or sharing his own so readily. Too readily, he had come to decide in the wake of Fiat Lux and so much failure and loss on all sides. He had begun to keep his mouth shut more, thoughts tumbling about inside his skull with less outlet but more time to accrete to one another.

In truth after Deimos had turned away he hadn't expected further words to be said. It was enough to be acknowledged, and he didn't ask for any more from the General, who had his own struggles and worries with Amalia's injuries, even closer to her than Jigano was.

Many could claim that, nowadays, and that hurt far worse than Zuriel's dislike. Isuma was upset by it, though, by the open disdain the unicorn showed her bonded, and she stopped her playful greeting to drop to Jigano's side, subdued as she crouched beside his boot and looked between the much larger people around her, confused by their unhappiness.

The question gave him pause before he could rise again and move off to leave the General and his unicorn in peace, and Jigano tilted his head to the side in silent request for something more to go off of. He blinked in surprise at the Attuned speech, but Safrin's name caused far less reaction than Amalia's. His issues with the goddess were his own, and though he'd urge caution to newcomers in dealing with her, he knew that Amalia - and by extension, Deimos - were two that the star-eyed goddess held dear.

For Amalia, though? To heal her legs, the bard could only assume, and he nodded in acknowledgment. I've seen a few, he responded cautiously. Plants withering from the heat and drying up. Do you need a particular type or size? Perhaps they could combine their magic to make what Deimos sought... or, then again, perhaps since it was for Safrin she would prefer if the leaf was entirely natural.

Despite the unicorn’s urgency and warning towards Deimos’ composure, something he had handled and perfected since lifetimes before, Zuriel’s own wasn’t quite as matched. Her ears flattened, nostrils widened, though only towards Jigano – no other explanation given, save for Deimos’ quick, askance gaze, and the mare ambled off, snorting and sneering from nearby.

Other than that, the silence remained: left to their own devices and hushed inquiries, a thousand other nuances and ruminations. He lifted his head only been the attuned accord ambled through once more, while they all seemed to walk on egg shells, uncertain of the parameters, the particulars, seams fraying or only just being held together. A tilt of his cranium indicated he was listening, little slips and intonations of his figure maneuvering along brush and nettles. No. Safrin asked for five leaves in different decomposition stages. Along with a bone, and some fertile soil: representations of life and what happened thereafter? Where they were all headed? He hadn’t asked about the distinction, stunned he’d received anything at all. A shift and shudder along his shoulders indicated he was maneuvering his bag, digging through, then producing a jar of one of those already collected – fresh and new, no touch of withering or decay, before placing it back into the wares for safekeeping. Quieter still, if it were possible to be more than a hushed whisper through minds, he asked. Where did you see them?

Zuriel had earned her distrust and dislike of the bard, and he simply bore it as he did the disdain of others, though he granted her more right to it. With others he might argue and try to sway them back to a rosier opinion, but he knew better than to try and change her mind, as with her bonded, and he accepted them as they were.

The machinations of gods and the reasons for what they asked for were always a mystery, so Jigano simply nodded acceptance of the list of leaves, assuming they would have some deeper meaning once they were in a goddess's hands. He paused to examine the jar, interest perking as he reached back to rest a hand on his own satchel, a thoughtful hum coming from him for a moment. Actually... if we get the chance, I'd like to commission you, if you'd be willing. Something like that, but enchanted to keep what's inside it fresh. It would make it easier to bring back samples for study and drawing. As he was doing today, assuming that he'd need to dry and press the leaves and flowers he'd gathered, and use the berries or preserve them in some fashion. That... might be a good gift for Amalia as well, he added as he stood, scooping up Isuma into the crook of his arm and stroking her back soothingly. Something to keep berries fresh year-round for her autumn and winter baking.

Because if this worked, and Deimos's prayer to the goddess succeeded, she would be back on her feet sooner rather than later.

He nodded to the General and led the way back from whence he'd come, moving slowly as he picked his path and thought back to the plants he had passed. Soon enough they came across one that had begun to wilt from Longheat's drought - just as a rabbit bounded away with its last leaf. The bard grimaced, sending a pulse of apology back through the bond as he knelt to touch the plant. He then shifted his hand to a nearby patch of dry soil and used his earth magic to create another, this one with all its leaves attached...

And almost disgustingly healthy. He sat back on his haunches, then tilted a raised brow at the General. Can you graze it with your life drain magic? he asked hopefully.

Considering how often Deimos was readily ignored by gods as a whole, he had no place to put thought and machinations into their ruminations and patterns – accepting the quest with only the Shield in mind. Were it another, besides Safrin, he might have been hesitant, but he sincerely doubted the being had any harmful inclinations towards one she considered her own. He on the other hand might not be so fortunate, but he’d cross that bridge if and when it came.

His brow arched a fraction upon Jigano’s inspection of the jar, giving pause to the notion of more magical artifacts and the possibilities reigning from within. A container to ensure something remained fresh likely wouldn’t be too difficult, and maybe when all of this was over, calm for half a second, he could concentrate on such properties. “I can do that.” A firm nod, indicating the potential for such things – pondering if he was just supposed to have a line of them in the bakery or Loreseekers hall soon. He kept it tucked along the back of his mind, safekeeping after storms and tempests, after disasters and mayhem.

Then they followed, Zuriel sulking from behind, which would’ve induced an eye-roll from the Sword if it were any other time, if he wasn’t pressed for specific layers and lacquers, if there weren’t a thousand other notions spiraling along his cranium. He hid his grimace and discontent when Jigano’s sightings materialized in a disappearing act, numbed in his disappointment, stoic and grave, reserved once more. Jigano replicated it, however, healthy and vivid, verdant and green.

The notion of seething it with his magic was poised, and he nodded, kneeling near, striving to render only the slightest of invocations, despite the lacquer bounding behind it. A particular stretch of control and composure sufficed and immersed from his essence, like a slow, steady pulse, a held breath, as the magic sought to merely touch, trace, and stroke the leaf.

Such a jar would be a practical help, and he nodded in gratitude at Deimos's willingness to entertain the notion. How many there would eventually be and for whom was entirely up the General's discretion, and Jigano didn't intend to push his luck with the request, content for whatever clever solution the mage came up with. It would be nice to turn to something made for peace, not war, for a change. Something that worked to preserve rather than destroy. An Artisan's task rather than a soldier's.

Not that Deimos had seemed eager to embrace such a life the last time they had discussed it, but then it had been a lighter conversation. More or less.

Given how things on Caido usually went, it was almost to be expected that nothing be easy. The plant he had seen was pillaged as they arrived, and while there were certainly more to be found if they searched farther afield, there was also no reason to waste further time when Amalia's cure took precedence. A new plant unfurled beneath his magic, green and lively, and then he sat back to let Deimos work his own destruction; not in swift retribution but instead in an almost deceptively gentle caress of power, visible to the bard by the slow wilting of the young sapling as they watched. The magic was disciplined and controlled, released in a whisper rather than a wave, and in a few moments the long, slender leaves had taken on an unhealthy tinge, slowly dying and just beginning to brown around the edges.

Uncertain of how literal Safrin's requirements on who was allowed to gather what were, Jigano stepped out of the way to give Deimos easier access to his goal, an arched brow of curiosity as he looked to the General. Will that be close enough, do you think? If not, they could do more, balancing life drain and healing to find the right balance that appealed to the one whose task it was.

The Sword hadn’t meant to cross opposing lines and stand amongst both: life and death; Artisan’s and soldier’s, but it’d been the way the world had manifested and unraveled, had contorted and rippled. Still fully immersed in displays, in aspirations, in ambitions of devastation and defenses, and in the other lines, creation, concocting things, objects, artifacts, into fruition. It was a talent he hadn’t held within Helovia or Isilme, granted and given only in Caido’s midst, a way to return the consideration, acceptance, and tolerance of his damned existence by the inhabitants here. Perhaps someday it would suffice for all the wreckage he instilled too.

The reflection ceased there though, as his magical quietly, subversively, tarnished new life, brandishing its demolishing state on a hushed, nearly tranquil upheaval. There were no screams, no shouts, no parallels of people falling apart, to pieces, at his feet, just the leaves beginning to curl, to turn, to flicker and wither and die; the brown tinging green, the life starting to vanish. There were some days where he’d turned to watch and witness his adversaries crumbling, decaying, listening for their last breaths, their last heartbeats, standing before them with his eyes on the slaughter, on the wake of cruelty, satisfied and content when they could push their bodies and bones off the mountain side.

This didn’t hold the same fulfillment.

“It should be.” In truth, he only knew as much as the goddess had granted, and so his magic diminished, its careful orchestrations no longer necessary, as he grabbed another jar from his pack, plucking the leaf cautiously, a vigilant, meticulous soul, and placing it within the container. As he tightened the jar, enclosed it within the sack, his piercing eyes wandered back to Jigano’s. “Thank you.”

A simple task when the two of them worked in tandem, as they so often had the previous season in building and strengthening various constructions. What would they have been, in a world where Amalia had never been captured by the Fae? Deimos's stoic strength and skill at dealing death with blade and muscle were not so different from Jigano's closest friend upon his old world, a stone-skinned Oread who had been both bodyguard and brother in arms. They had been a formidable team, spell-slinger and sword-swinger, complementing each other's weaknesses and strengths in taking life and healing it...

But theirs had been a partnership built on trust and shared goals. He and Deimos might have the latter, but he had lost the former, and so he would never know what they might accomplish together if the ever truly worked in tandem. His smile was a little sad and a little crooked as he watched the General collect a leaf. The plant was only slightly wilted and therefore still had a chance at life. Rather then undo the effects of Deimos' magic Jigano left the plant to whatever fate awaited it at nature's whim, contenting himself with a quiet nod of acknowledgement at the thanks.

"For Amalia," he said softly, meeting Deimos's gaze and hoping that this, at least, would not change between them. That they would be wiling to work together for the sake of the Shield, come what may of gods and monsters in the world.

He didn’t pause to reflect upon the alterations and changes amongst him and Jigano. To churn and burn in the midst of prior circumstances would only leave him more bitter, more rancorous, seething back into the fractious, restless edges. For once, he merely maneuvered forward, too many other things, other strangled, suffocating moments occupying his mind. On a sigh, everything gathered, he nodded, thinking to leave it at that – to disappear into the ether, into the vestiges, committing to the aforementioned tasks.

Except, his palms and hands were gilded again, forming something between calloused flesh and sword-infused skin, taking shape, forming its crystallized contortions in the sanction of creation. The promise fulfilled quickly, efficiently: the expanse of power billowing from his fingertips and orchestrated, cultivated, in the space of a jar. Nothing contained within, not yet, but capable of holding, keeping, something at bay from the withering, from the decaying, from the absorbing elements of time and space. He passed it to Jigano without a word, the commission taking place here and now, instead of later, when they might be distracted and harpooned by the next, upcoming, unwinding disaster.

Then, on the slightest of smiles, the barest form taking hold and root along the corner of his mouth, he maneuvered away, a hand waving the only other indication of his departure, Zuriel following suit. One collected; four to go.
