Nothing quite like a gamble and a roll about in the middle of the night in Haulani.

Yeah, Jack normally meant that in the hitching up your skirts and getting you up against the wall kind of roll about. Regrettably, this was much more the punching and kicking kind.

For a gambler (and a cheat), Jack did not take kindly to being on the receiving end of it. Worse still, he had an uncanny ability to know just how to tell when someone was trying to swindle a swindler.

So it was in the ruddy light of a lantern on a street corner that Jack finally staggered out of an alleyway, maybe more drunk than he would like to admit, and definitely with bloodied knuckles and a blossoming bruise along his cheekbone. All in a night's merriment!

MELITA
Melita had spent the greater part of the day merely exploring: dipping her toes into the sea for as long as possible, etching and sketching her way through sands, lingering long after her footprints had become nothing more than shells and ghostly imprints. She’d reveled in the keen taste of the sun, made the best of it with fresh freckles and reddened cheeks, dabbled and wandered along rocky crags in search of fish or any other fauna, merely content to revel in arches of paradise she’d once had. It wasn’t the Dragon’s Throat – not by a longshot – but they were echoes and fringes of something whole.

Dusk fell while she hastened along the city inclinations, Fangorn at her heels, weapons at her back. This was the only place thus far that made her the slightest apprehensive: an unknown barreling and quelling, a dangerous, treacherous border sliding its way into her soul. She hadn’t immersed herself into the same levels of consternation since the Rift, and by then it had become normal, everyday happenstance, to witness violence and vehemence.

So she held her head high, proud and nymph-like, a little huntress scalding her way up the streets, breaths of sunshine and irreverence all at once, when another traipsed within her sights. Everything and everyone was wholly unfamiliar, so she braced herself, a little taller, a little straighter, a little guarded as lantern lights flooded upon strangers. The honeybee youth’s intentions were to merely pass him on by, either maintaining herself as some threatening presence, or to be ignored altogether, allowed to meander along her way.

Oh, don't you worry - Jack had every intention of allowing Melita to pass on by. The buzz of her thoughts came into focus enough for him to realise, through the haze of booze, that there was another person there. Unfortunately it meant he completely forgot about the other participant in this sudden little rendezvous.

The man Jack had been fighting lurched out of the darkness behind him; a stockier build than the smuggler, but all flailing arms and no skill, he still collided with Jack with considerable force, sending them both careening out of the alleyway... and right into Melita's path.

"Oi, y'fuckin' ingrate," Jack complained even as he tried to get his balance. (Was he using Melita to do this? Maybe!) He turned back to his opponent, who had fallen completely to the cobbles after his failed attempt to tackle Jack, and spat on him. "And stay down," he snapped, then turned belatedly to glance around at the redhead. "Well as walls go, you're a pretty one," he remarked.

So much for those intentions.

It was a bedlam swing of movement and motion, gilded eyes taking in the action nearby, some other man careening from the backdrop, amongst the cacophony of noise and movement. She only had half a moment to react, and it was wrong, trying to swerve to the left to avoid any careening individuals, the menace of a swinging punch –

And was careened into regardless, and despite striving to stand her ground, two much larger men barreling into her made the notion superfluous, any affect she was going for lost in the haze of stumbling, fumbling to the ground. On a feral, savage hiss, her hip and knees hit stone, arms flailing onto the surface, weapons still remaining on her back and along her belt, despite the hard impact. Fangorn was a rattled mess, protective and ferocious but tiny and little in the turbulence nonetheless, torn between wanting to cling to her side and seeking to gnaw one of the stranger’s ankles.

In the end, they were both feral things. Melita shifted upwards, attempting to gather herself while muttering vague, Korofian expletives, wiping away the blood that had collected on her lip (maybe in the fall she’d bitten through it?). The girl didn’t even really hear what the drunken fiend tried to say, busy dusting herself off, tempted to grab the dagger furtively tucked away; just a formidable glare poised on both of them. “Piss off,” snarled and seethed from her lips, gathering the bag that had toppled on the ground with her, placing it back along her shoulder, eager to leave and vacate the scene even more now.

The other man was down, groaning and curled in on himself, and Jack was still braced against his pretty ginger wall. A wall that told him to piss off, in no uncertain terms. He snorted out a laugh, letting her go and managing to right himself enough to brush the sand and dust from his clothes. "Why thank you," he said - though quite for what even he did not know. Then, gazing down, he noticed a small pumpkin with sharp little teeth and ferociously glowing eyes, and for a moment he was utterly convinced he was mad (again, for a bit).

"Now, do tell me if I'm seein' things, but is that thing down there real or what?" he wanted to know, absently kicking the man on the floor again as he continued to groan.

Her eyes went to the groaning man on the ground, curled in upon himself, and then back to the other, a snarl threatening to ripple across her features again. She didn’t say he was welcome, because she wasn’t sure what he was thanking her for (besides breaking his fall). That his attention was drawn to Fangorn only heightened her ferocious, protective prowess, immediately bending down to snag the pumpkin in her arms. For his part, the companion growled and hissed once more, even though his small stature lacked a keen sense of any treacherous, diabolical abilities. “Yes,” she admitted, as Fangorn wiggled in her arms as if he was being held back from destruction and mayhem, things his brethren had been capable of in small doses before being smashed, beaten, or cooked. “He’s a vampire gourd.” To emphasize the fact, he hissed once more, displaying his fine set of fangs.

Her attention went back to the man kicked again. “What’s going to happen to him?”

"A... what?" A vampire gourd. A vampire gourd. Jack couldn't help it - in the face of the snarling little pumpkin with the jagged teeth and glowing eyes, he snorted out a laugh. It looked fucking ridiculous, bopping around and gnawing on the ankles of its mistress's enemies. And yet, here it was, alongside the little ginger wall who had so kindly held his weight. And who was apparently angry at him. Whatever.

Following her gaze to the groaning man, Jack shrugged. "I'unno. Don't care. He can stay out here til mornin' and be robbed an' likely worse. Or he'll pick his ass up and go home. Ain't my problem. Why, you want first dibbs?"

Maybe she should’ve let Fangorn loose to gnaw upon the man’s ankles. The youth was sorely tempted as he laughed at her explanation. She wondered why she’d bothered staying at all, if only here to provide a buffer for this man’s fall and a means of amusement. She didn’t hide the roll of her eyes, or the turn of her figure, intending to leave, rummage along back into darkness and foils. No sense in staying here. The other man apparently wasn’t going to be much of a bother for anyone either, so she snorted, taking one last look at the fellow. “No.” The girl had no intention of stealing from someone, especially wounded. If he was going to be all right, then she wouldn’t need to aid or liberate him from another pending situation – a mess on the ground, but wouldn’t be by morning.

No it was, then. Jack shrugged her off as she turned to leave, doing the inevitable and being the one to pat the man down in case he did have anything interesting on him (he did not) and turning away to leave as well. Or rather, trying to - it was more difficult than expected when one was drunk and had been punched in the face. "Don't go wanderin' too far in that direction," the captain called over his shoulder as he began to meander back the way Melita had come from. "Fierce an' pretty little thing like you'll be eaten alive before mornin'."

The youth thought to carry on with nothing more than the bizarre circumstances leering in the back of her mind, likely to be carried on the wind the day after, when she was distracted or deterred by something else. His call though gave her pause, a level of irritation spiraling over her form. It wasn’t the compliment (she’d never been called a pretty little thing in her life, and wasn’t sure how she felt how about it), but the you’ll be eaten alive before morning. For bigger monsters and demons had tried, and she’d lived to tell the tale. Maybe it was arrogance, a pummeling, drowning bellow deep in her soul, wanting to be seen as fierce, as ferocious, so nothing and no one would come after those things, those people, she loved. Maybe it was overconfidence, thought she’d proved herself time and time again that she was a creature not to be underestimated. “I’d like to see them try,” she called back, a wicked curve to the settled grin, a touch savage, a touch fierce.

Jack laughed aloud at her response - she was an impressive little ginger, even if she was all talk (in his very important opinion). "Well, if you do try an' you're successful, come see me at the docks! Might have a job for someone as feckless as you," he called. Two of his crew had been sucked into the sea on his last voyage, and he'd only replaced the one of them so far. "Ship called The Ark. It's the pretty one - you can't miss it." If pretty just meant the only one with dark wood and rust red sails.

Her eyes might’ve widened at the shout in return, turning her head back to regard the stranger. “What kind of job?” She called back, on the winds of curiosity and intrigue, on the basking potential for a ship (the Ark) along horizons and waves, a semblance of excitement pulsing and enthralling under her skin. Immediate temptation and enticement, an unwavering pull in her impetuous, reckless footholds; relishing an intake of breath as her thoughts ran rampant. She didn’t have too many ties here, not really, no occupation except a monster hunter, and it’d been so long since she’d done any of that (especially with Kiada leading the guild; avoiding the newly built threshold as if it held the plague). Only Sunjata for kin, and he was content, busy, with his constant swing of flavors of the week wandering through the bar. He needed to get his shit together, but maybe he didn’t require her for that.

Maybe she could find something for herself.

Jack spun on heel to walk backwards at the unexpected response from the woman, a smile creeping across his face. Quite how he had managed to do such a thing without falling on his ass in his drunken state was beyond him, but there he was. He spread his hands, as if to tell her the sky was the limit. "Sailin', transportin' goods," goods = contraband, naturally, "and there are some cannons that need mannin'. You fancy it? Get to see a lot of the world on a ship, love."

Sailing, out on the ocean’s depths, carried on a ship, by the wind, by the air, by the breeze, by the sea. It suddenly sounded like a fantasy, but one she could snag and reach, grasp and claw with her bare hands. Transporting goods didn’t sound all that grand – but then the notion of cannons caused her to gasp, eyes to widen, sharpen, with all the distinction of merciless, unrelenting capability. And a world to see: no longer so stuck, so mired, so inept, discovering more and more and more. Her heart raced, her fingers clutching Fangorn tighter. “Might see you there then!” With a nod, a wave, she was gone down the streets, temptation carving its distinction into her movements – people to talk to, to discuss with, before she rampaged into the inevitable.
