As the water brought the tangleweed and the squirrels over to Loren, he narrowed his eyes at the bundle. He kept a good distance from the plant (animal? thing) though he leaned forward to peer down at it. Then, though he pulled a bowl out from his pack.

He placed it under the squirrels that were captured by the tangleweed. Then he squeezed the squirrels with the tangleweed using his telekinesis. His goal was to bleed them out, healing them as he went to replenish their blood loss. Once he had a bowl full of blood, he would dismiss the squirrels, which in theory would just leave the residue from the tangleweeds behind.

Loren squeezes the tangleweed with his telekinesis to cause the squirrels to start bleeding. He heals them of their blood loss as needed, then once he has a bowl full of blood, he will dismiss the squirrels, causing the blood to disappear as well, hopefully leaving behind just the poison.

Quanil ‘s Tangleweed rocked in the light breeze, to all intents and purposes a dried up bundle of sticks that had certainly not moved to grab their staff earlier. The length of unbleached linen in its center fluttered lightly, pierced by multiple thorns, but otherwise not serving as impediment or particular obstacle to its lifestyle. It was questionable whether it even could let the fabric go if it wanted to given how entangled it had become, wrapped around several limbs, and the young Loreseeker’s verbal pleading had no effect on a creature that couldn’t understand human speech or emotions.

Loren ’s solution was disgustingly effective. The first squirrel ruptured before it could be fully healed, though the poison on its blood still dropped down into the bowl as it and its fluids disappeared. That experience must have given the summoner the control he needed with the second squirrel, however, to effectively ‘milk’ the poor creature until the bowl was full. When the blood disappeared it left behind enough of the Tangleweed’s poison to form a significant basis for study.

Jigano’s prey finally decided that a large meal was worth the risk, latching onto his arm – and the cloth wrapped thickly around it. The bard’s grin was sharp as he gave it a little shake, coaxing the creature to expend more poison. ”I’m fine, Quanil,” he reassured his colleague calmly, continuing the game of tug-of-war with the Tangleweed as it tried desperately to subdue its lunch. The poison soaked into the top layers of cloth and when he judged there to be enough, he flicked his other hand, sliding a coating of fire over it. He moved it close to the Tangleweed, slowly and careful not to set his bandaged arm in fire in the process. The ‘Weed began to tug frantically as the heat began to sizzle against the limbs closest to Jigano’s flame and he paused, holding the fire steady as the Weed fought to untangle itself from the prey it had wrapped around and that now prevented it from escaping the encroaching flames. It took several patient minutes, but eventually the Tangleweed was able to release its thorns and limbs and roll hurriedly away (though it hit the ice at the edge of the corral and could go no further).

Jigano stood and headed over to Loren’s squirrel squeezing factory, grimacing in distaste at the effective but still disgusting method. ”I know they’re not real… but still, that just looks… very unsettling,” he commented with a pained look for his friend. Fishing the magic bottle from his pack he unstoppered it and set it so that Loren could pour his bowl in while the Provost created a jointed metal gauntlet of very thin steel over his free hand to begin unwinding the poison-laden linen cast for squeezing into the bottle. ”Quanil? How’s it coming?” he called to the last member of their merry band while he worked.

Things are just about ready to wrap up! Try to collect one more batch of poison, or come up with another solution!

No posting order.

Loren smiled faintly as his efforts with the second squirrel bore fruit, so to speak. As Jigano came over, the smile slipped away, and the healer sighed. "As I've repeatedly told people, they're basically figments of my imagination. They don't feel pain, at all." He shrugged, clearly not particularly worried about the fate of his summoned creatures.

That was obviously in evidence as he summoned another two squirrels, and had all three of them basically rush at the tangleweed. If any (or all) of them were latched into the tangleweed, he would repeat the process he'd used with the original second squirrel, squeezing and healing, then dismissing once he had enough blood.

Loren repeats the process with any of the new trio of squirrels he summoned.

Quanil sighed twice - first in relief that the provost was okay and then in annoyance as they considered the Tangleweed with its new cloth core.

"It's... not coming at all, honestly," they admitted. "I think magic might be a requirement for Tangleweed milking."

Although, even as they said that, their mind began whirling. "Magic... or a lot more preparation." Because maybe... maybe if there was a box, and we could herd the Weed into it and then introduce the cloth, then use fire to make the Weed let go while opening the box again so it can flee, and hopefully it'd leave the cloth behind...

They set aside the mental designs for a Tangleweed Milking Box and looked back to "their" Weed. "I don't think it's giving up that bit of cloth, but I can try to hold it in place with my staff and this bit of wall if you want to try to 'convince' it to let go with fire?" they suggested weakly. Quanil shrugged. "Probably best to write it off as experimental failure and focus on the methods that work."

"Yes, but they still look real," Jigano pointed out to his friend wryly. Still, it was an effective means of obtaining the poison, however macabre. Two more squirrels were captured and squeezed to good effect, and soon the summoner had a half-full bowl of the poison for his efforts.

Quanil's efforts might not have born (poisonous?) fruit, but it sounded like they had learned something from the ordeal. "More preparation," Jigano agreed firmly with a smile for his young colleague. "Magic is useful and convenient, but often just a shortcut to what you could do with the right tools and materials on hand." He hummed thoughtfully at their suggestion, but the jar was filling up and Loren was going to have extra to take back to Halo. "I don't think it's even holding on to it anymore, not purposely," he mused, eyeing Quanil's Tangleweed. "The cloth has gotten, well, tangled up in its thorns, it looks like." He smiled at them as he put the cork in the magic bottle to keep the poison fresh for study later. "But we've learned a few things, and if we come out to harvest again we'll know better next time what works and what doesn't." Playing tug of war with the 'Weeds didn't work, but convincing them to let go of something too big to drag so they'd roll away on their own seemed to - or using summoning magic, if one had it.

He stood and grinned at his friends, holding up his jar and nodding to Loren's bowl of extra poison in satisfaction. "Thank you both for your help. Hopefully we'll be able to put this to good use, and find a way to infuse it in poultices or salves to numb injured areas. I'll see what I can do on this end, and hopefully we can compare notes in a few weeks to see what we've come up with," he suggested to Loren. "Let's head back now, and let these Tangleweeds recover in case we need to come out for more later."

And with that, so ends another PQ! Thanks for making it a success!
