And yet, being strong-armed by a goddess and having an unwanted daughter dropped in his lap hadn't happened until after the hunting expedition, and the bard let the quiet confidence he held in his star-touched friend remain in the bond in spite of Sunjata's doubts and scoffing at the former captain's strength.

No... I suppose I don't, Jigano agreed, watching the panther slink away into the shadows. Maea had indeed made her choice, and whether or not she would have even seen that notice without Sunjata luring her to Torchline was immaterial to the final result. He might blame the Flood for leading people astray, but his hands were not washed in the blood of the pale woman with the white wings and stubborn soul. Nor even with Adam and Peter's blood, in the end. Everyone chose to follow the Flood of their own free will...

But there was no denying how many people had been dying for that choice recently, either.

With a tired croak the raven turned around, returning to the lighthouse to gather up the lily and fly over the waves, letting the flower drop within the watery depths in final farewell as he headed back to the portal, to a waiting companion and mate and the evening chores that didn't care who had died or how much the fresh wounds still hurt. Life went on.

For some of them, at least.

{Finish}
