I've got a jet black heart
And there's a hurricane underneath it it

Pawsteps were skillfully silent as the black shewolf padded through the dry and desolate outskirts of this new prison. Thats what this place was, wasn’t it? Like Northaven, there was a border that kept her hemmed in, away from a large world she wanted into - out of here. The difference between this place and Northaven, of course, is that there was a way out back in that settlement. Here? There was no top of the wall, no gate built in where a giant beast had broken through, no stream that ran through a grate beneath, no catacombs that tunneled beneath - so far as she knew. She wondered if anyone had tried to tunnel beneath the strange barrier, or if even underground people were struck dead by it if they drew too near.

Of course, Ashe was keeping a wary distance from that imposing magnetic field she’d heard so much about. She trot horizontally to the barrier, sharp golden eyes flickering to gaze at the lush world she could make out beyond. One ear remained turned to the side and the other pricked forward as she moved, head low as she carefully inspected what she could without drawing too near.

Ashe did not like being trapped in here. Everyone was so content to just make this their home, the way everyone had been, she had been, back in Northaven. She wasn’t doing that again. She wasn’t going to put down infected roots. There was a bigger world out there, and she was going to get out and get herself lost in it. Out. The she wolf was reasonably certain that the spire, the gods, and the barrier were all connected. Did the spire create the barrier? Charge it? Did it trigger it? Was it the key to its collapse? Did it contain information, a door to the way out? The jet black wolf snuffed as she thought, her eyes lingering on that border.

She had found no irregularities yet. The outskirts of this shithole were as gray and barren as the rest of it (save for that glade she was rapidly growing attached to), and she cast a quick glance to the distant farms - skinny cattle milled on the horizon, the fields themselves either already harvested or about to be. Beyond that lay the distant woodlands she had gotten to know perhaps too well, the wolf having resided within them for weeks.

Ashe returned her sidelong glance to the border, tail swaying behind her as she kept a careful ear and eye on that magnetic field she could practically feel reverberating in her bones. Her hackles had been bristled since she got there, but she wouldn’t leave. There was too much to learn, too much she needed to rule out.

The assassin would learn everything she could about this barrier. Ashe wanted out.

The young woman dressed herself in long sleeves and gloves, a black hat with a wide brim atop her vibrant locks that she allowed to tumble freely. Since coming to this world, she discovered that her daylight ring just wasn’t at all functional anymore, an inconvenience to her that was an impossibility to account for when she made the decision to allow Archebold to turn her. Fortunately, it wasn’t too difficult to find ways to avoid sunlight.

She walked with her hands in her pockets and her sword on her hip, a slight frown tugging at the corner of her mouth. Fiery eyes searched the area, scuffing the dirt slightly with her boots at each step. Celosia didn’t like being trapped, either. It was one of her biggest pet peeves about Northaven. The moment the restrictions on the wall were lifted, she practically ran from the settlement into the jungle the very first chance she had. Thankfully, Remi has the same desire to escape from life for a day to explore the lush wilds. Here, though... So far, she hadn’t seen even a hint of a way out. There was a nagging voice in her head that made her want to do something, fucking anything for a change of scenery.

If she still had the ability, there would have been a rather exasperated sigh released at the frustration of getting nowhere. Her sharp eyes, however, caught sight of the familiar shape of the wolf Ashetta sometimes took, and she smirked slightly. A familiar face was always welcome, no matter how furry and snippy Ashe may have been.

The woman narrowed her eyes just briefly and hurried her step. ”Ashe!” She called, as she started to approach. ”Let me guess...  You’ve already sniffed around everywhere in the bubble and decided that the time has come to leave, but you can’t figure out how yet. Am I close?” She flashed the wolf girl a close-lipped smile.

Ashe scented Celosia on the wind before she called out. Her ear turned away from the barrier as both perked forward, her head picking up to lock sharp eyes on the woman approaching. The wolf slowed her pawsteps to a walk and watched her, narrowing her eyes just slightly. Often times, she spotted the former duchess thanks to her vibrant hair, but today she was covered in head to toe clothing, right down to wearing a hat. Why? It was strange to see her dressed that way, but it wasn't as if she could remark on it this way. She did flag her tail in greeting bristled hackles relaxing for a moment.

Am I close? Ashe snuffed with a dip of her head - an oddly human expression in a wolf. Oh yes, it was absolutely time to be figuring out how to get out. Ashe hadn't explored everywhere yet, but it changed nothing. She was still trapped, still a fish in a barrel for the next enemy that decided they wanted her hide. She didn't know what was out there on the other side, didn't know why there was a barrier, but she intended to find her way out, one way or another.

She tried not to think about whether or not anyone would go with her. Everyone she'd be leaving behind.

The wolf glanced up at Celosia with an ear turned towards that barrier again, and she delicately pulled in the woman's scent. Off. There was something very distinctly different to how she smelled now compared to Northaven, and she couldn't quite pin down what it was. Similar to Archebold, and she wondered if it was because she spent so much time with him. Didn't she?

Ashe nudged a broad shoulder against Cel's upper thigh, letting out a low sound from her chest and turning her head to the barrier. She didn't like it, didn't trust it. It did not feel like a barrier for their protection. If it was meant to protect them, would it kill the ones that strayed too near and lingered for too long? No, it felt more like something meant to trap them within. Why? She wondered where she would find those answers: the spire, the shrines, or the atheneum? She would be investigating all three... though the Spire perhaps later, when she was better prepared.

She looked back up at Cel and let out a brief and low whine of discontent before lowering her head, angling her gaze as well as her ear towards the border. Did she know anything about it? Had she seen anything different, heard anything?

Cel smirked at Ashe’s response to her assumption. She followed the she-wolf’s gaze and observed the way her body language was so interestingly similar to the way she moved as a woman. Shapechangers had always been interesting to the former duchess and hybrids were just like icing on the cake.

Ashetta bumped her shoulder against Celosia’s leg, and she her attention was centered again at the wolf. She wondered briefly why Ashe remained as a wolf, but she opted not to ask. The girl wasn’t exactly predictable, but usually the reasoning behind her actions was simple to deduce. This didn’t seem overly complex, though, so the young woman didn’t feel the need to pry into it.

She whined at Cel momentarily and looked towards the border, hinting at her questions being about the strange energy shield that was trapping them inside.

Cel shrugged lightly. ”I have no idea,” she muttered. ”Thought about asking the gods, but the last one I met…” She gritted her teeth, looking at the ground with a tight frown as she remembered her interaction with Frey. ”Let’s just say the gods aren’t exactly the most amicable beings.” Far from it, actually. She fought a shiver at the memory, wishing she could put it behind her.

She stuffed her gloved hands in her pockets and furrowed her brows. ”Have you figured anything out about it yet?”

Ashe thought about shifting, to walk beside Celosia and speak with her but... she hadn't seen the fire-haired woman since before Alistair left her. She wasn't sure she had it in her to explain, to tell someone of what she'd done. So she remained at a smooth and padding gait beside her friend, four paws softly sending up scatters of dust into the chill fall air.

Her ears perked forward sharply at the mention of gods. She let out a soft and inquisitive bark with bright eyes turning fully up to Cel. She didn't like the gods, then. Or at least the one she had met. Her eyes narrowed and she snuffed before returning her attention to the barrier as they walked on, scanning the world beyond and remaining aware of the magnetic and threatening field. Did it arc upwards toward the sky as well? Surely it did, or an avian attuned would have made it out by now. Did it arc outwards from the spire? Or did it go straight up and up and up, too high to fly over? So many questions... she needed to find herself one of those naturals.

The she wolf flashed her eyes up at the woman's question, and she let out a low and unhappy growl, one ear folding back as she glared ahead of them. No. Nothing yet. She had only just begun looking into things, of course, but unknowns were a bit of a tick she didn't like. Her lip feathered in a half snarl before she shook her pelt, glancing up at Celosia. She repeated the same bark she'd made with the mention of gods, and she wondered if the former duchess would understand what she even meant. If not... well, she couldn't exactly expect an original to communicate with a wolf, could she?
