maybe they'd forgotten,
when they failed to see the cracks.
There were few places where Rex hadn’t been yet in one way or another, and this was one that she always seemed to avoid. After the buzzing at the strange invisible boundary and spending the day with Alistair, appearing from thin air with that hissing mask, she figured she might as well try her hand with this place. It was much more foreboding, screamed so much more danger, but she was a curious creature and it was hard to keep her entertained with the same thing over and over again.

The Labyrinth, at the very least, appeared as though it might have been some kind of wonder at one point. Trees stood tall, blocking out all of the light aside from a miniscule amount, and she was wondered if at one point in time there had been someone that cared for it. There were trails, though some had become overgrown and the more she peered down them, the more she realized that they did indeed lead places. She thought about it some more and realized perhaps this was a maze at some point, and her curiosities lead her a bit astray.

She moved back to the entrance, pondering a way to leave breadcrumbs so to speak in order to find her way back; but yet again, the woman came woefully unprepared. The clothes on her back and her wit being the only things she brought. Some kind of madness had to be inside for every time she chose to explore, she had found herself at said place with little preparation. Though with the ominous land before her, she made a mental note to change that. At least all the other places had been bright and welcoming, despite the earthquake that brought Frey to Remi and her, and the fields where she had met Alistair and had a pleasant day.

Perhaps this one wouldn’t be as welcoming and with that thought she chided herself, staring with her sapphire pools at the entrance of the maze.

Kalt was dressed in his uniform - as usual - silvers and greys covering the tunic and concealing countless knives all over his person. The assassin had been on edge lately for reasons that wished his eidetic memory would allow him to forget for once. Not likely. Regardless, he was looking for a distraction. How did he distract himself? Well, same way he did in Northwind and Northaven... By going somewhere strange and creepy and likely causing or getting into some trouble along the way. Looking for trouble really was the only exciting way to live.

He had been all over the small bubble that everyone seemed to be confined to, but one place he had yet to approach was the labyrinth. Why he hadn’t gone yet, he didn’t know. Kalt usually just grouped it into the category of right place, wrong time, but that was over. His curiosity won out.

However, he would be lying if he denied that the beautiful woman approaching the mouth of the labyrinth had nothing to do with his final decision to enter.

The assassin had been perched relatively high above the ground, watching the spooky land for hints of what was inside for the better part of an hour. As soon as the woman approached, though... Well, time to stop sitting around. He dropped a few feet behind her, a quiet thud of boots landing on dirt the only sound of his movement. If the woman turned around, he would flash a charming smile as he righted himself and pulled his hood back to reveal his face to her. ”Not safe for a lovely woman to wander in these lands alone,” he warned playfully. ”Didn’t ya hear that goblins run these here parts?” He was of course talking out of his ass, but it was all in good fun. ”Name’s Kalt. What’s yours?”

She continued to stare into the darkness, the way the trees swayed with the wind in the littlest of movements. It seemed peaceful, but it also seemed deceiving. And she wasn’t certain entirely where to start. She could, in theory, pick up a sharp rock and mark all the trees, but who’s to say it wouldn’t be dark by the time she realized she should leave? She hadn’t mastered her magic far enough yet to be able to produce a consistent set of lights. Instead, just beautiful fireworks that rained down around her that were utterly helpless against the forces of darkness.

Yet Rexanna did manage to hear the thud of boots from behind her, and for a moment she thought it was Alistair playing that surprise game with her. She turned, however, to be surprised at the stranger that looked upon her. Her sapphire gaze slipped to his face, where a charming smile sat as he removed his hood and spoke to her. His warning was met with a gentle chime of a laugh and a skeptical look at his mention of goblins, though if it were truthful, she wouldn’t have known any different.

He introduced himself then, and she placed the name to the face and put it into her mind as she offered him a gentle smile in greeting, turning to face him more fully. “I’d say this is a much better view than that forest.” Her voice was deep with that sultry hint of honey that dripped from the words, a grin sent his direction. “I’m Rexanna.” She offered in response to his name and asking about hers.

She took a quick glance back to the labyrinth before turning her head back to him and raising an eyebrow. “Looks like a place long ago that was well groomed. Perhaps a lovers maze of sorts?” She purred, a grin forming along her face, completely unafraid of his appearance. She had been dealt worse cards and lived, and so far she was counting on that if Kalt had any ill intent. It didn’t seem like he did, but none could be so sure. She glanced back at it, curiously. “Want to give it a go?” She questioned, half to him, half to herself as if she wasn’t sure just yet how they’d get back out.

The very first thing the young woman said to him set his brows higher than usual, and a slow smile spread over his lips. He was quite aware of his physical attraction, but it had been quite some time since a woman had brought the conversation in such a direction, especially so quickly. That’s not to say he didn’t enjoy the little surprise.

”Rexanna,” he said, tightening his lips in a grin with a slow nod. ”I quite like how that tastes. Elegant with a hint of rustic earthiness.” And that wasn’t even to mention the sultry allure of her voice in which the words the words fell.

Kalt released a gentle laugh at the thought of the place perhaps having been a lover’s maze once upon a time. Clearly Rexanna had quite the imagination if she was capable of seeing the labyrinth as remnants of something beautiful. The assassin saw death, which to him was without a doubt full of beauty, but to most others was dark and terrifying. Who was to say what lay in wait for the pair of magicians?

”You don’t have to ask twice, my lady,” he hummed with a crooked grin. ”May I have this…dangerous adventure?” Once again, he flashed her a charming grin and offered for her to place her arm around his if she would like. As soon as she did – or if she decided to deny the offer – he would enter the maze that he was pretty sure was cursed somehow.

As Kalt said her name, the rumble of his voice caught her attention. He spoke of its earthiness and she flashed a grin to him in response. “It means royal grace, if you were curious.” Her sultry voice added in as she flashed him a wink. It wasn’t until she was eighteen years old that she learned of the meaning of her name — having kept it as a secret from her for so long. Despite her royal blood, having a servant family would make that name stick out for anyone who understood the true meaning. It would have been considered overreaching of the family had she been a normal child. But Rexanna wasn’t; she was a daughter of a queen and the daughter of a warrior, and no matter how much the king of the land hoped she’d parish at the hands of her husband, she was here and alive, and thriving with it.

But Kalt didn’t need to know that. In fact, only a few people knew of the history with her. And Frey had made it clear to her that only those she chose would know, removing her brand that had marked her as a traitor, as a property of the crown and her husband. No longer did she have to hide the mark or try to explain; it made it far easier to live that way. The only downside thus far was the purring of her voice with any words she said. She made it work, however, and it didn’t seem like Kalt minded it much. Instead, he seemed to go along with it which was a breath of relief for Rexanna.

He began to speak again, and she offered him a charming smile as he extended his arm and she took it gently, cocking her head to him. “You may.” She purred to him, her deep blue gaze lingering on him for a moment before looking back at the entrance of the maze, wondering what could happen — what would happen. For a moment she pondered the possibilities, eyeing the sky to see where the sun sat in the sky though it was hard to do with the way the trees blocked it almost entirely out. “How do you suggest we find our way out?” She asked, her voice never faltering in its flirtatious tone, as if it wouldn’t be a big deal to her should she have to spend the next foreseeable day or two with him before managing to find their way out.

Royal grace. She appeared to have just that. Kalt lived his life on the run, regardless of whether or not he had the protection of he Guild for the majority of his life. He was still a wanted man. Because of that, he learned how to make quick judgements and assessments about people. While he might not have known the entire story Rexanna had in her past - nor did he need to know, though people’s histories always interested him - he could tell she wasn’t just an average woman.

His crystalline eyes wandered around their surroundings as they walked, and each and every detail found its way into some hidden part of his usually obnoxiously brilliant brain.

He raised his brow to her question, and gave a half grin, as he tapped a finger to his temple. ”Perfect memory,” he said simply. ”I remember every little insignificant detail about my life all the way back until I was five years old. Nothing escapes.” Alright, so maybe, he might have been showing off a little bit. As was the nature of a man in front of a beautiful specimen such as herself. It was just how nature worked!

”What we should concern ourselves with are the spooky stories surrounding this place.” Once again, his brow raised at her, though that time it was in an enticing manner. ”You’ve heard the things they say about the labyrinth, haven’t you?”

At her question, she looked over to him while they walked to see him tap his temple and explain about his memory. “Hmm.” She began, tilting her head in curiosity to him. “I’m impressed, though I’ll be honest in saying I’m very pleased I don’t have that.” She breathlessly laughed to him. “But it’ll certainly help.” She winked. While yes, it would certainly help with remembering the way out of the maze, she couldn’t bear to think of what it would be like for her if she too had that kind of memory. There were parts of her life she had blocked out permanently, in the hopes that she’d never have to think of it again.

There were some parts, however, that remained in small fractions – the beatings, the branding, the arguments, though never truly in depth. It was something she was thankful for, for a mind that knew how to care for her even if it consistently tried to punish her for her decisions. That was the reprieve that Frey had given her; their conversation having quieted the self-destructive part of her mind and allowed her to live and thrive as she would have without all her experiences. She was learning how to live that life now, even if she could only flirt.

Her attention was dragged back to Kalt as he spoke of the stories surrounding this place, and her shoulders shrugged while she shook her head. She couldn’t tell him, couldn’t form the words correctly that would say how new she was here and how she had just found out about the bubble surrounding the place – though how could she? Nobody she had talked to had mentioned anything about it until Kaladin, and her adventures hadn’t gleaned anything in that regard – instead it had brought her to Frey and not long later, having her voice changed.

Terrifying things, I hope. I’m in the mood for some fun.” She finally managed to say, offering him a roguish grin and a wiggle of her eyebrows. Sure, Rexanna wasn’t an assassin, she wasn’t even a fighter – but she knew how to save her life, she’d done it time and time again. And in this strange place, she had magic that might frighten someone away though she hadn’t tried it out yet. However, having Kalt here seemed to make it a bit easier in her mind. One more person that seemed quite capable of handling whatever was out there. She’d make a good distraction – she always did.

He smirked simply at her comment about not wanting to have his eidetic memory. It was true, it was a blessing and a curse. While being able to remember everything was certainly convenient in his line of work, it also meant that he remembered everything. And also in his line of work, there was quite a bit Kalt wished he would have been able to forget. That was what repression was for, though. His subconscious mind, thankfully, took care of his conscious mind when he didn’t even realize it.

His devilish grin appeared once more at her daring tone, and mischief gleamed in his eyes. ”Oh, terrifying things, indeed,” he confirmed. He didn’t know. He had absolutely no fucking clue what he was talking about, but that didn’t stop him from talking... It never had. Improvising stories and tales was one of his most entertaining skills.

As they walked through the twisting pathways, he began telling Rexanna stories, legends about the labyrinth. He told her about the creation of the maze, how it was made for a young man to prove himself worthy of the woman he loved. He told her how the father of the woman had cursed the labyrinth to change whenever the young man took a turn. It was an impossible place to escape from, and eventually, the young hero died. He told her how it’s said that the young man’s spirit is rumored to still haunt the labyrinth to try to help frightened travelers, but he always seemed to get more and more lost as time passed.

”Of course,” he said, flashing her a grin, ”I’m likely wrong about all of that since I’ve never heard a damned thing about this place.” He chuckled breathily, eyes constantly alert for whatever may have been lurking around the corners.

maybe they'd forgotten,

Kalt made for good company in this strange place. She was certain that she’d get lost in here if she were by herself – she probably wouldn’t have even gathered the nerve to go this deep into it and turned around and left for another day, returning with company of someone but she didn’t know who she could ask to come here. Thankfully, she didn’t have to worry about that, and instead listened as she glanced at Kalt catching the mischief in his eyes as he replied to her. She offered him a roguish grin in response before he began his tale while they continued walking.

She remained silent throughout it all, having nothing to offer in her cursed voice – so she listened, wondering what parts were true and which were all a lie, but it was quite the story and she found herself interested. She pictured the young man, of the father that resembled much like her king in this narrative and she found herself imagining a different world where she didn’t have to endure what she did, nor having to be placed in a place as strange as this.

The tale was soon over, however, as Kalt announced that his story was likely false and she chuckled a sultry sound as she looked to him and his icy eyes. “You do well at being convincing.” She winked, her voice lingering with the purr though it wasn’t met with her eyes. Instead, she turned her attention to the maze around them, the trees that seemed to go on forever and the bushes that had an odd feeling about them – like if they were to return it wouldn’t look the same. Regardless, she huffed silently before turning back to him.

You aren’t from here either, then, I take it?” She tilted her head, her brown locks falling over her shoulder with the movement. She was curious what his story was, though she wouldn’t accurately be able to explain her own story and how she ended up here. She didn’t need to know everything, but the fact that everyone she had met thus far were foreigners of a sort. She had yet to meet someone that had actually been born in this hellhole aside from Frey – and she wasn’t certain that Frey was made here either.

”Ah, far from it,” he answered casually. ”This is the third world I’ve been to. So far the grimmest, I must admit. My first life was in a kingdom called Northwind. There, I was one of the most infamous assassins the land had ever known.”

He was getting used to telling his story, the first person to know it having been Bastien when he encountered the man in the fields. It was fascinating just how easy it was becoming to own who he was. Never once did he imagine having the liberty to speak his past so freely. Of course there were pieces of his past that would never see the light of day if he had his way.

Kalt flashed Rexanna a grin, as they walked together. ”Northwind was a violent and war-torn kingdom, so some of our magic users opened a portal for people to escape to a place called Northaven. That place was beautiful, but very dangerous. Everyone there was confined to a settlement within a tall wall. After that place, a seemingly random selection of people were zapped here.”

A piece of him wondered if this was going to be the final place for him. Who knew what other worlds lied in wait for some mysterious energy to pull a group of people through? His mind floated to the barrier that enclosed this little area, keeping everyone inside. What could be waiting on the other side?

A slow breath brought his attention back fully to the situation at hand. ”And what of you, royal grace?” He grinned at her teasingly. ”Where do you come from?”

maybe they'd forgotten,
when they failed to see the cracks.
Her head tilted to look at Kalt while he spoke, noticing the scars but asking nothing of them. She had her own series of scars, she was just lucky enough to have Frey remove the big obstacle. Yet she nodded while she listened, flashing a grin to him as he spoke of being the most infamous assassin. “Exciting” She purred. It was true, she imagined the life of an assassin to be hard and difficult, yet it intrigued her. Perhaps in that part of her that was quick on her feet, a spy of sorts in the networking of her castle before she got thrown to the wolves.

He continued to speak, though, explaining the situation of Northwind in a way that made Rexanna reminisce about her own home. He spoke of Northaven then, of portals from the one place to another that reminded her of some far off distant land that she had experienced – yet not; that other worldly side of her that had loved and cherished, birthed children, and fought for them in another life. It was how she knew, yet didn’t know, Deimos. A man she had admired yet had died in that other world, other place. How many others were there like that, that could remember the other lives lived before living them?

Still, she nodded to him and listened, having no idea of who else had arrived from Northaven. Alistair hadn’t told her the name of the land he was from, and she didn’t mention it. Yet Kalt turned his attention to her, and to her story, making a play on her name that caused a roguish grin to form on her lips. Clearing her throat, she lifted her chin and her eyes seemed to glaze as if she were remembering everything vividly. “I grew up a servant in a castle to the King of Halyven.” She began, the purr in her voice probably lead to a different idea that Kalt might have. “Turns out, I was the daughter of the queen in a very long and intimate affair. The king said he kept me a servant for my protection, but the place I grew up in was war torn too.” She paused, glancing over to him to see his reactions. “He sold me like a whore to the prince of another land to make relations easier, saying I was his daughter all along but hidden for my protection. I was there to create a child of both nations.” She shrugged lightly.

Things were good at first, but the truth got out. I was bound and branded by my husband, managed to escape eventually. The last few years of my life I’ve been sleeping with all the bounty hunters and guards that have come after me to keep from being captured. The men of Asciend preferred sex over money from their royalty.” A light laugh. “Then I fell through a wall here.” Her voice was soft but retained that sultry tone. Her hand lifted to gesture to the collarbone just barely jutting out over the shirt despite the fact clear skin remained. “The sexiest god I've ever met removed my brand but altered my voice. I’m only allowed to flirt now it seems.” She offered with a slight grin and a wink.

Exciting. That’s what most people seemed to think of the life of Silver Wing, but the darkness could’ve easily consumed the light if he had let it. Kalt’s personality was a lot of what kept the other seniors in the Guild from just blindly moving through the days. Harkon was his brother, as close as he would get to one at least. Vaego was a shit, but they enjoyed dissing on each other. He was lucky if he saw Tiernan once a month, and Orynth was as close to a friend as Kalt had ever had (not counting Ashe of course). They all had amazing attributes, but Kalt’s habitual rebellious side absolutely kept things interesting, especially when Ashe got old enough to join in the rebellious and honestly extremely fun acts. The two of them could’ve caused the downfall of the Guild just by pranks alone. He couldn’t help the smirk that crept on his face at the memory of racing through the halls together, trying not to get caught.

As Rexanna began telling her story, Kalt listened intently. Royal grace... If she was the daughter of the queen, apparently the meaning of her name was rather fitting.

He listened, brows drawing with a slight frown when she mentioned being sold to a prince. Things like that seemed to happen quite often in blueblood societies, and even more in royalty deals. Creating alliances between nations, fending off wars, trying to secure the kingdoms’ futures... All pitiful excuses in his opinion to sell off your daughter (or son) to a marriage. Plenty of commoners he had known would’ve killed to be royalty, but Kalt had lived with wealth that rivaled his king’s, so he was content without the political drama of royals.

Then, the explanation for her flirtations came out, and Kalt huffed out a laugh, pinching the bridge of his nose briefly with an exaggerated sigh. ”So you can’t speak normally,” he acknowledged. ”And here I thought you found me charming. I’ll never trust a flirtation again, your highness.” He smiled at her, silently assuring her that it didn’t bother him. She was attractive without a doubt, but even if he could’ve felt some kind of compatibility with the runaway princess, his heart wasn’t his own to give anymore. It hadn’t been since he was twenty-six.

”With all due respect, I think your step-father and husband were vile men,” he said. ”You deserve far better, and I sincerely hope you find it here. In fact, I’m sure you will: I see it in your path.” He might not have had his mysticism anymore, but that didn’t stop him from making cheesy psychic comments.

Kalt was quiet while he listened to her story, and she appreciated the ability to be able to say it at all – even if it came out strange and contorted. Nobody would really speak flirtatiously about being tortured, but yet here Rexanna was. At least the woman had a good explanation for it. And as the explanation came out, she looked to Kalt as he spoke and pinched the bridge of his nose. She laughed a charming laugh before reaching her hand up to plant a playful pat on his shoulder. “I would’ve flirted with you regardless.” She offered with a wink and another charming laugh.

She had zero idea what kind of place this was, where Kalt had fit into it all aside from falling into it as well. Had he been as lost as she? Or not at all, having come with people he knew from Northaven? Still, she found her gaze lingering on him for a moment before looking back to the labyrinth and the looming trees around them – the light playing a fickle kind of shadow against the paleness of her skin, shadowing her eyes slightly while they walked. She didn’t look at him again when he spoke, a half smile crossing her features.

I hope so.” She offered quietly, shrugging her shoulders lightly. “But I think I might take it slow for a bit. Test out all the options.” She added, glancing to him from the side with a light chuckle. She thought of Alistair and what they were and weren’t to one another – how he had been willing to offer her whatever she wanted, but Rexanna was in a place where she didn’t know what it was she wanted. She was content to be his friend with a few added perks. But she wanted to be sure that Alistair had known she planned on spending time with others as well.

Luckily for her he wasn’t upset and seemed to understand. But for the future, she wasn’t sure where that left her.

He gave Rexanna a smile when she winked at him after the comment and nodded with tight lips. Flirtatiousness was usually just a fun way to play around with people. He had no qualms about flirting with anyone, and he enjoyed it even more when they flirted back. Granted, his playful energy was sometimes a charm all its own, but the purrs and vocal inflections in just the right places with brought a pleasure he hadn’t had in a while – despite whether or not it was literally the only way she could speak.

Kalt smirked at her comment, adding a slight nod for good measure. ”Try all the options, and take it slow,” he said, lifting a devilish brow. ”Kind of an oxymoron, wouldn’t you say?”

The man wasn’t serious, but it was a small innuendo that he just couldn’t let slide by without saying something.

”Taking it slow is a fine choice,” he said. ”When I first got together with my-“ He cut himself off, realizing he wasn’t exactly sure what to call Ashe. They weren’t married or even engaged, but they were far more than just ‘together’ would indicate. He decided to just start that sentence over to hopefully clarify it. ”When Ashe and I first got together, it was absolutely taken slow. We didn’t exactly have the freedom to be open about it, but three years later – through separation and worlds apart – we’re strong as ever.”

If they had had their way, slow likely wouldn’t have been the way they took their relationship, but it was probably ultimately for the best. He also wondered briefly if the woman would pick up on Ashe's name. Kalt had seen her at the bridge with Alistair, so he wondered if Alistair would have mentioned Ashe being his ex-wife, or if he was just sweeping that part of his life under the rug.
