but there's chaos brewing

No monsters, no mayhem, nothing but the eternal darkness faced her now. It was strange, after experiencing LongNight twice over before, to not be standing amidst danger, treachery, or impending demons. There was no clacking of claws, no sinking of talons, no immersion of lures, of temptation, of enticement towards death and desecration. All that lingered before her was the endless, open sea.

The youth carried a lantern and hummed under her breath, the gilded glow of the light matching her eyes, catching the beacons of others further up the shore. While there was naught to rejoice, and she had a difficult time celebrating, partaking, in the parties ahead; habitual, to consider sketching outlines of power and precision instead.

Fangorn drifted along the rolling abyss this time, curious and inquisitive, his own eerie, enigmatic glances scorching along embankments. Something must’ve caught in his gaze, because before long, there was a grumble, a growl, uttered through the gourd’s presence, snagging at Melita’s attention too. “What did you find?” She whispered, inclining closer and closer to the sea and companion, hands tightening over her lantern, and the staff in her other hand.

If you wanna know the truth about the truth, it's a scam
Sometimes, during Longnight, humans walking drunk along the beach back from some party or another would drop something precious from their pockets: maybe their coinpurses or a treasured trinket. These things in of themselves had little value to Olavi, who despite stereotypes was not a collector of human detritus (who gave enough of a fuck to collect surface dwellers crap?), they were often worth something in what the human would give to get them back the next day, when they came down to the beach looking for their lost items.

He'd accrued several favours and 'allies' this way.

Waiting for someone to appear, Olavi rested against a rock and re-wrapped his fists. Just as he was about to give up and swim back down to the city, the light of a lantern caught him off guard, the reflections of the yellowish glow obvious on the water. Sinking down to hide, he inched closer to the shore to see if whoever was coming would be a good target.

Sadly, she didn't look particularly sloshed. If anything this girl seem extra alert, which was annoying: if it were not for one detail, Olavi would have simply turned around.

The detail was the...pumpkin...vegetable...thing that was walking around with her. Whatever it was, it was new, which probably meant valuable, and he was sure she might pay a hefty price for it. Still low in the water he began to reach out a slow hand, menacing and covered in the odd sheen of shark skin, towards Fangorn, hoping to catch the companion unawares and drag it beneath.

There were some who might not have appreciated Fangorn for his existence. There were individuals who turned up their nose at him, likely due to the legacies of his brethren. There were others who were afraid of him (which brought the pumpkin great delight), and likely still a cluster of humans who believed he wasn’t worthy of companionship – after all, what did a vampire gourd even do?

Well, at this venture, as he rooted and rumbled around the damp sand, as a hand (covered in shark flesh) drew towards him – he screeched, and then aimed to bite down on whatever offending fingers managed to get close enough.

The scream was all Melita needed to launch into action, drawing her lantern high to reflect on the enigma inclining towards her bonded, and then her staff. A rush, rampage, a frenzy of ferocity unbound, unfurled, unleashed, launched from her movements – no warning in her swiftness, save for the slash of her weapon through the air. In another world, she might have howled, a little crimson wolf beckoning for more fire, more flame – but there was no need here. A threat lingered and she would strike it down, intending a full bout of force and strength to careen, hit, whatever offending being aimed for Fangorn.

While it could perhaps be expected for a vegetable that was already walking, Olavi was not entirely prepared for the screech that the horrible thing made; reflexively he drew his hand back into the water, managing to avoid the bite of it's teeth (why did a squash have teeth? The surface world really never did stop coming up with fucked up shit to send to the beach).

Unfortunately though, the girl with the haunted pumpkin had good reflexes: before Olavi could slink off into the night, a staff swung down and splashed against the surface of the water, hitting his arm. The pain wasn't enough to get a noise from him: after all, water slowed the impact considerably, but what he did notice immediately was the sudden colours and light before him, the way the line of the top of the ocean began to bend and rotate around before his eyes.

That made him not want to leave: had this random dickhole just poisoned him? Sticking his head up out of the water, he barked: "The fuck did you just do to me?", trying not to look too hard at the rocks, which were beginning to turn an odd shade of purple.

She hadn’t expected a human, or a merfolk, to be the one snagging at her companion. It could’ve been another beast altogether, something disturbing and hungry, rising from the sea to ensnare and entrap those willing to wander the beach during the long, lingering night. Not a great start to any relations between the people of the ocean and other land-dwellers, but then again, she’d never sought to angle herself down into the waves and steal something of theirs.

There was not a single sympathetic thought or glance towards the man as he barked, struck by her staff, christened with hallucinations due to her aim (and she could recall here and there, the time she’d done the same to Kiada, and the rush of relish, of vehemence, stoking in her blood). If anything kindled across her features, it was a furrowed brow and a rapacious smirk, ravenous, predacious, her turn to leer and inhabit violence.

Melita rushed forward again too, a threat in the raising of her staff once more (no strike coming down this time), as she made to grab hold of the grumbling, irritated Fangorn, plucking him into her hold, safe and secure. The youth managed a one-finger salute, uncertain and uncaring if merfolk understood the meaning, and signified it again with a growl, not bothering to answer his inquiry. “Fuck off.”

And she began to stalk back towards the length of shore, potentially out of reach and clutches of the stranger.

It seemed he really had picked a bad human to mess with. Olavi watched with an unimpressed expression as the staff was raised again, this time ready to reach up and grab it as it swung down - he didn't flinch, far too used to combat for that. Melita didn't seem to want to hit him again anyway: she just made some weird gesture and threw his curses back at him.

"Hey--" He said as he swam along the shore to follow her. "Does that staff have magic?" The water was still pulsing and bright green so he assumed it would have to, unless Nerissa had been getting them some very odd food to eat. Normally Olavi would accept the loss and move on but with the odd visions occurring in front of his eyes, he wanted to try and make sure it would be temporary.

Any semblance of compassion, composure, or beneficence had long since been forged away from the girl – she was flames and ferocity, viciousness and vehemence, simmering like embers and cinders as she made her way down the beach. Her body shook with the ringing decibels of predacious cataclysms, fingers clenching tightly over pumpkin, staff, and lantern, a few feral breaths released from her savage intervals.

Why he’d continue talking to her was beyond her capacity for rationality or discourse, turning her head swiftly back in his direction, as if he were the greatest dunce who’d ever lived (which might not be the case – that was likely reserved for Sunjata, but this stranger was a close second). Her eyes narrowed, sharp and malevolent in the lantern light, just waiting for an excuse to enact another round of force and vengeance. She sneered at him (while Fangorn hissed), and gave an empty answer. “Maybe.” Indifferent to his suffering, continuing on her rampage and stampede across the dunes and sand; if he requested more of her rapacity, she’d be all the willing to grant him his wish – schisms of wrath, contempt, and discord held along her form.

Olavi was used to being intimidating, the one in charge of situations; sadly, a head poking up out of the water was far less intimidating than a full-bodied shark man under the waves. He continued to swim to follow Melita down the beach, feeling pretty stupid as he did so but determined to continue until he had found out just what she'd done to him - he wasn't about to go back to Nerissa impaired.

Swimming was becoming harder though, with everything around him beginning to pulse and change. Melita seemed determined to keep going and Olavi was determined to get answers, so he went to desperate measures. She wouldn't get the upper hand on him again, staff or no staff: going as close to the shore as he could, he reared his tail up out of the water then brought it down with some force, hoping to splash out cold sea foam onto Melita as hard as possible to make her stop and face him.

Simmering and seething in her molten, infernal contempt, the youth didn’t expect another fault line erupting. She figured she’d done enough to fend the beast off, and continue on her way; if she saw him again in the future, she’d likely malign him in some other capacity.

But then the deluge curled over her, Fangorn’s warning (a hiss, a growl) far too late for her to do anything other than become soused from the wave. It drenched, cooler than normal, pressing into her skin as she gasped in surprise, the shock of it all sending a shiver down her spine.

However, the girl never quite lingered in that sensation for long.

Her brows furrowed, indifferent to the plight of her clothing, her hair, or the rest of her form. Quickly, swiftly, all over again, Melita placed Fangorn down by her ankles, from where he stood and grumbled towards the stranger in the water. Thereafter, her staff became unnecessary, returning it back to its holster on her belt, and shoving out her forearm, and pretending to draw the string of a bow. The bracelet along her wrist unfurled its weaponry, and she grabbed hold of an electric arrow from her quiver – listening to the snap, the sizzle, watching as its sparks danced in the coils of darkness.

Then she notched the armament, and aimed it straight at the sea, at the shoreline, at the beast lurking in its midst. One, last, singular warning, no words required now.

Well, he knew when he was beaten.

Or, perhaps more fittingly, he knew when it wasn't worth the fight anymore. Olavi didn't want the weird vegetable bad enough to risk death, so as soon as he saw the electric arrow he sighed, rolled his eyes and turned to leave: as he pushed away from the shore he did splash his tail into the water with a loud thud one more time though, to just send a few more droplets Melita's way.

Humans needed to learn a lesson about sharing (not that he was intending to share Fangorn, but that was different).
