The young healer watched the reflection of the nymph woman, as she floated around the surface. He was mesmerized by her, having never seen anything like her. However, caution forced its way into his mind. Over his years, he came to realize that many things of beauty often had hidden dangers beneath the surface.

Her next question didn’t take any thought at all. What was it that he wanted most? Well, that was the easiest question he had ever been asked. Chester. This little adventure was bringing up his dead lover’s face, his eyes all over again, only… Gods, it actually felt like a memory. After his interaction with Ludo... A memory wasn’t entirely enough to get him by anymore.

Desmond drew a shaky breath, unsure of how to word his answer. ”To see my lover again…” he started quietly with a huff of a laugh. ”To feel him again, I would do whatever it takes.” He felt a twinge of sadness, of darkness touch him, but it felt…like home. It felt natural.

He had no fear of death. Hells, sometimes he wished death would come sooner. He didn’t care what it took, he would do it.

Alorhea watched the ice nymph float over in the reflection and there was a flutter in her stomach when she felt a feathery kiss touched to her cheek. It was strange to feel something like that without being able to actually see it, but she wasn’t going to argue.

What did she want? That was the biggest question. To know what she would do to obtain what she wanted, she had to know what it was that she wanted. She had ambitions of course, but what had she not yet obtained that she wanted?

She remained in silence for a long moment, listening to others’ responses. She realized that she wasn’t being asked what she wanted, though. It was how far she would go to obtain what she wanted. However, that correlated to what she wanted, and she realized that nothing she ever wanted would have pushed her to do anything questionable.

”I keep my desires simple,” she said, as though spouting wisdom. But it was true. There was a reason she lived in a tent in the woods with just the necessities around her. Everything she wanted was within reach. ”I’ve never truly wanted anything larger than what I could get just by pushing myself a little bit.” Even when her fathers died, she didn’t want them back. Did she miss them? Of course. But things happen for a reason, and what was meant to be would come to pass, whether she played a major role or not.

First regrets, now desires. Amalia is not enjoying this game; it pulls at the sadness deep within her, the pervasive sense of insecurity which taints her every thought. What does she regret? Not being better. What does she want most? To be better. Circular logic, cracked and flawed, but the girl cannot think of anything more. Sure, she would love the return of her mother, her grandmother, her gods. She would love to escape this prison and see the world, to visit the places spoken of in her books. Amalia dreams of friendship, of love, of family and belonging to something, someone: of being pulled from her isolation and making the world a little brighter, a little more beautiful.

But to do all that, she needs to be better.

"I will never have the thing I want most," the girl murmurs at last. "I want to be a better version of myself, but... there is always a better version to be. But I still try, every day, to be that person, to be good enough. I do everything I can. I don't know what more I could do. But if there was something I- I'd do it."

Uncharacteristic speech concluded, the baker falls silent once again, flushed and uncomfortable in the icy cage.

the cold was so intense that she could see her own breath; it came out of her mouth like smoke
The winter nymph listened to them all, one by one, skating here, gliding there, until finally - when they were all finished - she slid to a stop next to Rexanna .

"Yes," she said, her voice tinkling with delight. "Regret nothing. Do anything you can to achieve your aims. These are the marks of survivors." Clasping the woman's shoulders (or her reflection's shoulders, rather), the nymph danced effortlessly on the ice until the was in the centre of the room.

"Keep those thoughts close! Now for the last hurdle of our game, you no-regretters and do-alls. Catch me."

As she whispered the words an icy wind howled through the cavern - the cavern that tilted, tilted around until they were all standing upon its ceiling.

Or were they?

The nymph, they would see, was visible to them now. They were all the right way up, and she was no longer in their reflections. Or perhaps they were their reflections now?

Whatever. Let the game begin.

A sudden roar of vertigo took hold of the alchemist making him close his eyes and spread his hands defensively. As he did so feathers appeared from the wrist down. It was an instinctive response to take flight whenever the ground proved to be unstable, and, given that they were meant to now chase, he thought it a good idea indeed.

Unsure if this was a playful or an important task, Remi jumped into the air allowing his body to rapidly shrink and contort all the way down. Fanning his wings he rose to the top of the cavern, not wanting necessarily to be forced to weave in and around everyone standing below.

With a piercing cry, Remi would tuck his wings and drop towards the nymph. His eyes remained trained on her, his body and his feathers ready to make all the minute alterations necessary to bring his descent in line with her movements. If he was successful, he'd try to brush her shoulder with his wingtips in a tag sort of gesture.

BASTIEN
Soon everybody, everywhere will be
The envy of the gods above
Bastien managed to keep on his feet steady as the cave tilted around - his acrobat training came in for things like this. Still, he was disorientated. The ceiling was the ground or...something, and then the nymph was yelling at them to catch her. He tried to run into action as quickly as he could, pushing past people as they were all running too.

When he was close enough he lept, reaching forward as far as he could to 'catch' the nymph, his arm outstretched towards her. He would try to grab at her wrist as he landed on his knees, sliding across the ground.

The nymph praises a woman who promises to have done everything. An admirable trait, perhaps, but one without sense of consequence or result. Still, a pang of envy resounds deep within the girl: she is not fearless, she is not bold. She lives, regretful and beholden, ever conscious of the world and her place within it, striving to improve herself and her surroundings. Is this so wrong? But she cannot judge, cannot even pause to reflect, for in a moment the world literally spins, tilting and flipping to take on a new perspective. For a second Amalia's stomach churns, but she is quick to regain her balance, knees wide and body low, feet planted firmly on the icy ground.

Catch me. At once the nymph is there, among them, and Amalia blinks in brief surprise. Others are quick to lunge and chase, shifting into more aggressive forms or dashing across the ice. It seems a recipe for chaos and injury, cracked skulls and blood on the ice. It is her first instinct to join them, to reach out and snatch at the hope of success. Instead Amalia takes a step back, her eyes trained carefully on the dancing girl, ready to slide toward her should she break away. Better to wait for the nymph to move, see if she tries to slip past the initial surge. Amalia mirrors her movements, and should she lunge toward the edge of the group is ready to react, reaching out to try and touch the figure before she can break away.

If things weren't strange enough already, pure chaos erupted around them as the world tilted and the nymph appeared among them. Isla's eyes widened, but she was far from the fastest here - not underground, not whilst the sun still shone high, high above wherever they were. Her speed was for the darkness, she had found, and she was more defenseless on the ice than had she been Accepted still.

But that wouldn't stop her, the healer glancing about as the nymph darted and danced, watching Remi swoop and Bastien leap. Isla, though, skated. She moved languidly, without any of the panic of her companions, hoping to weave and slide between those around her towards the elusive woman. Should she succeed, her fingers would brush over her.

RexannA
but darling, in the end,
you've got to be your own hero.
The woman in the ice listened to them all, though as Rexanna spoke with the fierceness she felt in her heart, she watched as the woman stopped by her. She watched as the nymph clasped her reflection’s shoulders and a small smile broke on her lips at the gesture. However, the woman moved to the center of the room and told them to catch her. Rexanna’s brows lifted in a silent question before the world turned.

Everything tilted and she instantly began to try and retain her balance, though it seemed as though she hadn’t really lost her balance. As she looked for the woman in the ice again, she realized the woman was now real and all thoughts seemed to vanish from her mind aside from the questions for the game. Remi had shifted into a bird, and she watched as he took to the sky. Bastien and all the others began to give chase, leaving Rexanna to sit there and plan. Though it seemed Amalia had a similar idea.

She watched the movements of the nymph and avoided the chase from behind, instead trying to figure out the woman’s patterns and try to approach head on. She kicked up the snow as she moved, pausing here and there to gather her surroundings and where she had thought the woman would jump to next as she tried to get into the nymph’s path and reach out an arm to hopefully tap the woman.

Jigano's dignity was just strong enough to smother the yelp as the cavern tilted beneath him, though he dropped to one knee again, hands pressed to the ice as if to try and dig handholds to stabilize himself with. His fingers weren't that strong, though, and despite the nauseating sense of vertigo he found that it wasn't necessary, either. Were they beneath the ice? Within it? Was it all a dream?

Catch her? And just how were they supposed to--

Oh. Apparently she was tangible now, or they had joined her in the reflected world. Either way, he had no doubt that no one would be leaving it until they did catch her... and just what would that entail? A shriek from above whipped his head up to spot the fierce hawk diving down. Remi? A quick look around revealed Isla standing alone, so it must be. Either obedient to the nymph's commands, or just trying to end this bizarre game... it was a toss-up with the boy.

He watched Bastien thrust his way through the gathering, desperately grabbing for the nimble nymph with little concern for those around him, and his lips tugged into a slight frown. That didn’t seem right…

Isla moved with grace, slow enough not to draw the eye, but she didn’t seem fast enough to catch the personification of winter that danced among them with such ease.

Two of the other women seemed to be biding their time, hanging back and waiting for just the right moment as they stayed to the edges of the game.

Jigano stayed kneeling, frozen and oddly blended into the colorless ice cave with his white hair and grey cloak, though his blue eyes searched sharply to see what the others were doing in response to the nymph's command. Last hurdle? But... 'no-regretters' and 'do-alls' didn't include him, now did it? If anything, the nymph had as much as said that he had no place in her game anymore.

Ah, but he’d never been one for giving up gracefully, now had he? With a fierce grin at himself in the ice below the lorekeeper bided his time, his stillness becoming one with the chill world around them, waiting for the winter spirit’s lithe evasions to bring her near enough for him to reach out, snake-swift and sudden, eyes on the floor rather than the woman who looked so solid, guided by their reflections so that his mirrored hand might close on hers – and, perhaps, his real one as well!

Rhea was put off instantly by the way the icy cavern seemed to tilt and shift, but she had her feet on the ground - or ceiling maybe? - which was the important part!

Catch her? Surely this was a joke... The tigress flashed a toothy smile, as she watched the others’ attempts to catch the nymph woman. What happened when they caught her? What if no one was able to catch her?

Rhea laughed when she saw Remi shift into a bird, and she suddenly wished her own shift could fly. However, the tiger would have to do!

Suddenly, in place of the woman, there was a large striped feline, her claws attempting to dig into the ice the best they could to get some kind of grip. Then, she was off, chasing after the skating nymph to try to cut her off where the others chased her, who they could suddenly see as if she was one of them.

The young healer, for the first time in a while, sprouted a smile, a genuine one. He enjoyed an innocent game, and he wondered if he maybe played chasing games in his youth.

He watched everyone, and soon enough, Desmond decided to also start after her. His steps were at first unsure, as he tried to gain a rhythm under foot, but once he did, he managed to skate - mostly smoothly - after the nymph.

To his knowledge, he had never done anything like this, which made him a little nervous, but it was remarkably fun. He started not really caring what the purpose of the little adventure was, instead enjoying the game of pursuit.

The flew, they leapt, they skated and danced and grasped and chased. And ultimately it would all be for naught. The nymph's tinkling laughter rang through the cavern and made it judder and rumble alarmingly.

She was still - motionless, you might say - and her hand was closed around Jigano 's in both reflection and in reality. "Patience," she said. "Whether a no-regretter or a do-all, patience is never a bad quality."

Tittering, the cavern would rumble and crack this time, chunks of ice beginning to fall from the ceiling to slam into the glassy floor they were standing upon. Their reflections shattered, the noise vibrating through their very bones, until it all just... fell away.

Around them the labyrinth whispered in the winter wind, almost as if it was laughing at them. The group would find themselves standing at its entrance, just like before. Nothing had changed. Nothing was amiss.

...Apart from Jigano, who would find himself standing and holding not a nymph's hand, but... an egg. Dappled white with strange, glacial patterns swirling across it, the egg would shift and move in his hands. It would likely hatch soon.

Thus concludes the Deepfrost drop event! <3

He wasn't sure what to expect when he made his try for the nymph, but feeling her hand in his took his breath away and he looked up sharply at her tinkling laugh. As the cavern started to crack and crumble around them he stood and moved to pull her into the faint protection of his arms, instinctively trying to shelter her from the collapsing cavern but--

There was no cavern. No falling blocks of ice. No nymph at all, in point of fact. Cradled in his arms was an egg of breathtaking beauty and a size no normal bird or snake could boast. For long moments he stared down at it in shock, eyes following the intricate patterns of ice and snow that seemed to shift across its surface as the little life within moved, warm and helpless in his arms. And... just barely, just a tickle... in his mind? At long last, when his chest began to hurt, he remembered to breathe. He quickly shifted his cloak over the egg, as much to keep it warm as to hide it from view, and he glanced up to make sure everyone who had been below was back.

He counted off familiar faces first, of course, then the unfamiliar ones, breathing a sigh of relief when the numbers matched up. For a moment his gaze returned to Isla, Bastien, and Remi but... they were safe and unharmed... give or take the fresh wounds the nymph's words had opened on some of their hearts.

He wasn't ready to face any of them yet, neither strangers nor friends, with the raw feelings still lingering. Instead he ducked his head and turned away, retreating back into the trees and heading for his den to think about what he should do next... and to keep the egg warm.
