CHULANE
why do things happen with no reason or rhyme?
why does it feel like we're running out of time?
Chulane wasn't sure why he was wandering the streets of Snowcloak so late at night, but here he was. The odd, never-setting-sun twilight had thrown his sleeping patterns - it was common for him to work 20 hours straight, making deliveries, rounding up ningos, sometimes just taking to the skies for hours on end - he wondered if this was what being an Ascended was like, though he did not have endless energy reserves like they seemed to.

No, he was fuelled by dreams that shook him awake, by grief that rattled and left him awake more often than it let him sleep. Adrenalin and a need to keep his body and mind busy pushed him to keep moving, to keep being useful, to keep being generous, and helpful, to find some kind of fulfilment in life - even if it all felt like it was for naught. So he wandered, a bag of plucked ningoes over his shoulder, ready to make an early-morning (or late-night, depending on how you looked at it) delivery to a family in need.

Neron
the wind breathes lonely
longing to be seen
Chuy is up late/early, and Neron doesn’t need to sleep. Neron also doesn’t remember how he found himself sitting on the front steps of the Kraai in the snow at this time of day-night, but that’s par for the course at this point. Time bleeds into nothingness as an Ascended, and this seems even more the case when the sun never sets. That’s what he’s putting his confusion down to; who wouldn’t be perplexed, when the world is doing this?

It doesn’t explain the persistent urge to pull down the hood of his coat and stare directly into the burning twilight, though, but those aren’t the sort of questions one asks oneself, right? He’s not cold, at least. He doesn’t feel the cold, which is good because he’s been feeling pretty cold lately regardless, though the flush to his cheeks suggests something else is afoot.

He’s tapping a foot against the bottom step of the Kraai’s opening when Chuy passes by, the man recognisable by being the only one around. ”Lot of ningos for one guy,” he remarks, smooth as you like.

The Kraai was often on his route - he supplied the ningo to them, after all, with the pub being such a hub of activity for meals and drinks alike. Today's (tonight's?) delivery wasn't for the Ascended-run bar, however, so the vet had his attention mostly on where to place his feet, idly aware of what Auni was doing gallivanting nearby. The luxere was feeling better, which in turn slowly made Chuy feel better - some of time, at least. Tonight, he was mostly mindlessly completing this delivery - until a familiar voice rang out and snapped his attention sharply to his side.

"Not for me," he said, good-naturedly enough in response, pausing in his stride to consider the man. He looked… flushed, almost? Similar to how he'd looked after the vote for the new Warden, where Chuy experienced one of the most awkward encounters of all - an ascended bite. She had been there though, and helped him get through it, helped him manage well enough to help his friend. So he jumped to the conclusion that that was what Neron had just done - fed on what he assumed was a willing participant.

"For the Rojernstern's," he supplied by way of explanation for his earlier remark, naming the family who had many mouths to feed and not quite enough luck with hunting recently. "What're you up to?"

”Ah,” Neron says knowledgeably, as if he can remember the slightest thing about what Chuy has just said. He doesn’t, of course, and a curiously young expression overtakes his face at the other man’s next question. Neron’s hand slips into his hood to rub at the back of his neck, the movement highlighting the pearly sheen to his skin. He should not be able to get a fever, but if his friend gets close enough he might even be able to feel the heat radiating from the Ascended.

”I don’t know,” he confesses. ”I think I was... trying to catch the sun? There’s a Fae festival where you need to do that, at LongHeat. Is it LongHeat yet?” He shakes his head, like he might be able to dislodge a thought and make sense of things. ”I’m sorry, Chuy, I can’t quite remember why I’m outside.” He rises to his feet, as if to abandon the man and go right back into the Kraai, but vertigo seizes him and forces him back onto the step.

”Perhaps I should sit down.” As if he isn’t already sitting.

Chulane watched the ascended closely, taking a step closer as certain details started to fall into place in his mind. Grief had slowed his mind down, fatigue had added an extra foggy layer - he wasn't thinking as fast as he usually might.

A small frown creased the lines of his forehead. "It's LongHeat," he confirmed, though Halo's version of LongHeat only barely involved actual heat. But as he got closer to the ascended - retreating a step again as the Hailstorm rose, and then promptly sat down again - he realised something was properly awry.

"Neron," he said simply, coming in close, dropping his bag unceremoniously in the snow to sit beside the ascended on the step. He raised a palm to Neron's forehead, as a nurse might, curious at the sweat the ascended had.

Weren't ascended meant to be impervious to illness? Wasn't part of their appeal their longevity, their ability to go on and on, to endure, to survive things others might not?

"Let's get you inside, Neron." He commanded gently, making to help lift the ascended under his arms, and somehow get them through the door. The success of this whole venture relied entirely on the willingness and condition of the other man, however.

”Take your hands off me.” The words are icily articulated, and there’s very little recognition in Neron’s eyes as he glares at the man trying to check his temperature and help him to his feet. He tries to shrug Chulane off with all the arrogance of nobility, as if the touch might have devalued his clothes in some way. Of course, he makes it precisely nowhere, on his feet but staggering unceremoniously into the closed door of the Kraai.

That seems to knock some sense into him again, at least, the Hailstorm pinching the bridge of his nose and squinting at his friend, like the twilight of early morning is suddenly too much to bear. ”Chuy?” he murmurs again, like they haven’t literally just had this conversation; whatever shard of the former duke had crept to the surface seems to have bubbled back under again. ”Yes, I think inside would be a good idea.”

He tries to grab the handle of the door twice, succeeding once, and they manage to make it into the Kraai with minimal injuries. Within, for reasons that make sense only to the sick and delusional, Neron has placed all of the chairs upon the tables, and all available glasses and bottles are upside down.

He ignored the ascended's demands, pressing his palm against the forehead anyway, feeling something he did not expect at all. Heat.

Now Chulane and Neron didn't often touch. But on the rare occasions that he'd brushed by the other man or donated his blood to him, Neron had been cold to the touch.

Could ascended's get fevers? Apparently.

He would've laughed if he wasn't so worried, at the stumbling, uncoordinated motions of the man who always came across so dignified and held together. And when they entered the Kraai proper, he took in the somewhat upside-down scenery with a soft hmm.

"Been redecorating, Nez?" it'd been a while since he'd used the nickname, but perhaps it would continue to bring the ascended back to the here and now and less lost in whatever world his mind had paraded off to.

The vet one-handedly grabbed at a chair from a table and set it back on the ground, then unceremoniously plonked the ascended into it. Then he helped himself to the bar, getting a bottle of wine for Neron and a water for himself.

He settled into a chair by the ascended opening the wine bottle and handing it to Neron, sipping at the water for himself. "How do you feel?"

the wind breathes lonely
longing to be seen
Neron lets out an irritated sort of huff as a hand presses to his forehead, though he’s not nearly coordinated enough to be able to stop Chuy from manoeuvring him about. Blinking at the chairs and tables with seemingly fresh eyes, the Hailstorm seems to want to ask who has done something so ridiculous. He stops himself, though, at the worrying realisation that he might have done it himself. Letting out a shaky breath that he absolutely doesn’t need, he sinks into the seat with Chulane’s help, watching him blearily away behind the bar.

”I think I was trying to get somewhere warm,” he says of the arrangement. ”It’s cold here, so if you flip it upside down it should be warm...” It still makes perfect sense to him, in fact, and his brow furrows as he tries in vain to remember why he didn’t believe it was a good idea anymore.

Then there’s a wine bottle in his hand, and he’s uncorking it and taking a long drink, only to wrinkle his nose and set it down on the table. How is he feeling? ”Thirsty,” he tells the other man, reaching out abruptly to knock the wine bottle off the table, letting it smash and send a river of red across the floorboards, which greedily drink it up.

CHULANE
why do things happen with no reason or rhyme?

The frown lines on Chuy's brow were getting more and more defined by the minute, as Neron's explanation made very little sense to someone who was, for the most part, sound of mind and body. "Since when do ascended care about being warm?" He didn't bother trying to correct the man's view on how to achieve that, his suspicions rising the more time he spent with the man that something more serious than an ascended getting a temperature was at play. Was Neron delirious?

"Thirsty." Chulane repeated, another frown appearing as he watched the wine bottle go flying across the room in a smattering of glass and red liquid. He did nothing to stop it, merely watching it with a vaguely disinterested stare. He was tired, and yes restless at the same time. He was also a vet, and while he tried to be patient around non-animal patients, well… there's a reason why he was a better vet than a healer.

"I can help you get to the Shrine?" he asked, turning his attention back to the man, tilting his head as a bird or even a cat might in curiosity. He also knew he owed Neron a bite, a replacement winged shift for the night in the skies that the ascended had given him not so long ago… But he wasn't too keen on consenting to it when he wasn’t sure if Neron was all there.

Then again, he could easily convince himself that Neron was in need now. That without it, Neron would suffer needlessly. He sat back, waiting to hear what the other would propose.

”We... don’t.” Neron frowns darkly at the red liquid as it pools and soaks into the floorboards, guaranteed to leave a large and sticky stain. He doesn’t like the way Chuy makes sense, the Hailstorm conflating the man he knows as his friend and whatever his twisted logic is telling him. ”I am warm though, aren’t I?” He says suddenly, clarity in his expression as he tries to find the other man’s gaze. Shadows keep playing at the corners of his vision and it’s impossible to concentrate for long; soon he loses focus, interested instead in the grains of wood on the table.

”To the Shrine? What for?” he asks quietly, apparently forgetting what he’s literally just asked for. He smiles, and it almost seems sad. ”I’m sorry, Chuy. I fear I can’t quite remember what we were talking about. What... how long have we been in here...?” And why are all the chairs upside down. It’s a cycle that he’s caught in, one that he might have been repeating for hours even before the Attuned arrived.

"It's alright mate," the vet sighed, resigned to hearing the circular ramblings of a madman for the foreseeable future. He genuinely wished there was more he could do, a way he could solve it for the ascended, for his friend… He decided he would try his best, at least.

The vet rose, and ambled his way to the office behind the bar or wherever the office is, and wrote up a note that read 'Closed' in clear lettering. Then he wandered back to the front door, opened it, and stuck the note to the door. It would at least stop some potential for spread, if this illness was contagious. He flicked the lock over after he shut the door.

"Are you tired?" he came to stand by Neron once more, looking over the ascended curiously. He knew they didn't need to sleep, but then, they weren't supposed to be able to get sick either. "Let's get you to bed," he said with authority, preparing to help the man rise again, and direct him to one of the many rooms the Kraai had.

Was he planning to lock the ascended away in here until he could get more of an idea of what he was dealing with? Maybe.

Chuy will find no problem in getting the materials he needs to create the sign. The office, at least, seems to have been left untouched by Neron’s madness (for now) and is in the Hailstorm’s preferred neat and tidy state. The sign goes up, the lock clicks down, ad Neron is none the wiser, lost as he is in the patterns of the wood and the confusion that keeps clouding his mind.

Then his friend asks if he is tired, and he swears he can feel the fatigue dragging at him, a phenomenon that he is supposed to have given up. ”Do you know, I’m exhausted,” he whispers, though that says nothing as to whether it will actually bring sleep or not. Still, he is compliant as the vet gets him on his feet and leads him upstairs to the rooms. They’re all empty, of course, and Chuy won’t find an issue in getting Neron into a small, empty one.

”I used to spend all my time here, when I could sleep,” he remarks of the bed, collapsing face down onto it, fully clothed. ”I miss sleeping. You just... didn’t have to be here, for a bit. It was nice.”

why do things happen with no reason or rhyme?

He watched the ascended fall into the bed with a distant curiosity, wondering what else he should do with the man. He looked to the fire place, to the embers glowing, that could easily summon a full flame again. Looking down at the feverish ascended again, he frowned in thought, and then wandered over to the window.

Opening said window, he grabbed generous fistfuls of snow, and committed the cardinal sin of Halo - dowsing the wood in the fireplace with a soft sizzle of snow. And then he left the window open too.

Neron would probably be able to resuscitate the fire if he tried hard and long enough, and shut the window too. But as far as Chulane knew, he didn't have an attuned shift available to him (and Chulane wasn't going to give him one in his current state), nor any abandoned magic stored away - locking him away in the room with a window cracked to try and manage the ascended's temperature was about all he could do in this moment.

"Hope you can get some rest, Neron." The Chief said softly, before making a quick exit, shutting the door to the bedroom behind him, and going past the office to grab every key he could find. While he was sure the ascended could get out of the bar if he really wanted to, he had a suspicion that the illness currently afflicting Neron would slow him down just enough to stay within the confines of his temporary holding cell long enough.

Then Chuy left the Kraai, locking the door behind him with one of the many keys he had, frowning all the while at the implications.
