towers of gold are still too little
Sometimes the chaos of the waves was soothing in its wild predictability. For while they came fiercely, each one striking the rocks, they always came. You couldn't see the waves from just any angle - it took some precarious (some might say foolish) positioning, with slender legs dangling over the edge, and a lean torso leaning forward to allow warm honeyed irises to focus on the turmoil below.

He floated a small distance away, golden scales shimmering in the sunlight. He needn't try very hard to stay afloat - the air that rushed up the nearby geysers provided more than enough lift for his sleek, leathery form. "Do you suppose  there are dragons in the sea?" the former Dragoon posed to the dragon, falling silent as the singing stones nearby hummed their melodious reply.

THE LION ISN'T SACRED WHEN NOT SLEEPING NEAR THE LAMB
Few places in Stormbreak one might find himself truly alone. Sometimes the paths above the sea were one — sometimes, as today, they were not. If this disappointed Brecken, he never showed it. Only paused on his way down as first the glimmer of dragon scales caught his eye, and then the soft voice of the Blade. It was no doubt rhetorical, her question, but Brecken never was very good at keeping his mouth shut even when he needed to. "Bigger than yours, I expect," he called out, half a grin tearing at the right side of his mouth. Left unsaid: how terrifying that prospect. He kept a cautious eye on Amaris' creature as he paused, wondering if she appreciated the company or if he ought to pretend he had elsewhere to be. Brecken had never been fond of dragons. Not of the teeth and claws, sure, or the fire, but mostly — they got inside your head. And Brecken didn't need anything else inside his head. The thought actively disgusted him, terrified him, and he felt a cold chill if he dwelled on it too long. He had avoided the dragoons for a reason, though he certainly would have excelled there. Amaris clearly had, though she was always so small and soft to look at, like a little lick of flame, herself.

He was not sure how he ought to speak to her. They cam from the same place, of course, but from different directions it seemed to him. Then again, most people seemed that way. Belatedly, Brecken remembered he could use words to ask questions. "Not many people to stab out here," he commented, a raised eyebrow, an easy movement as he sank to a crouch, not quite committing to sit, not quite brave enough to trust the air the way she did, but an offer of companionship nonetheless. Brecken had never been very good at asking things straight. Easier to be told to fuck off that way.

towers of gold are still too little
The woman wasn't surprised, at least outwardly, that she was not alone. With his high vantage and keen senses, Dramyrth had long ago alerted her of the Lance's venture onto the narrow path, a sharp note of judgement accompanying the sensation - which she promptly ignored, not sharing all of her bondmate's proclivity for jumping to conclusions, at least for her own kind.

And Brecken was very much her own kind, dealing in things most shied away from. Honey gaze flicked up to him, a hint of a smile softening her lips for scarcely a moment, before mere curiosity was carved into the curves of her brows. Dramyrth hadn't liked his answer to her question, hadn't appreciated the insinuation that he was small, but the Blade mentally hushed him, lest he get too enthusiastic with the flames he was oh-so capable of producing. "A likely estimation, but don't let any dragon of the air hear you say so," she gave the warning with an honest desire to help the man survive going forward - dragons, whether they were bonded or not, were all proud creatures, and it was likely that not all would be hushed the way the Blade had so easily hushed her own bondmate.

"That's half the appeal," tones of a deep melodic hum provided, a note of amusement evident - was she teasing him? Testing the waters, as it were, seeing if what existed between them could evolve from purely professionalism to grow to include something more casual, more… friendly? Sitting more upright, hands dropping to lean against either side of her thighs, she hoped to convey that he was welcome to stay, despite her words indicating that she had perhaps come here to find a moment of solitude. It didn't matter - she was never truly alone, not with Dramyrth entwined with her soul.

THE LION ISN'T SACRED WHEN NOT SLEEPING NEAR THE LAMB
The warning might have been given in fairness — still Brecken answered with a snort of laughter. Let them interpret that how they may; he had no doubt of his strength against a mere beast, even a beast so regal and so well-loved. Though he doubted many things, his own skill was never one of them — not in battle, at least. Brecken felt no desire to find Amaris on the business end of his lance, though. It was for her sake he arranged his face into a more respectful order, though his eyes flickered over the shape of the dragon out on the air. What thoughts did they share? What thoughts did it give her? Was she never tired by it, annoyed by it, having something else so alien so close inside her skull? Brecken had long ago given up understanding dragoons, but this particular woman was much closer to him than any dragoon, and so he had to wonder. What compelled a person..?

He was distracted, anyway, by her answer to his own question. This also prompted a gout of laughter, but a gentler one. The laughter of a comrade, who, despite the words, settled his lanky frame down next to her at the suggestion her body spoke in silence. Perhaps he overstepped; perhaps he didn't care. What else did he have to do, finding his chosen haunt occupied? Retreat? Feign an errand elsewhere? He didn't particularly like the sound of either option at the moment. "Is it?" Brecken said lightly, maybe even teasingly. "Here I thought you joined up because life as a Dragoon wasn't exciting enough for you." A question lingering in the slight tilt of one eyebrow, in the sideways glance he cast at her. He knew very little of Amaris, though to be fair he knew very little about most people. Enough to get along with, certainly, but when it came to the faces they wore in private, the reasons they tread the paths they did? Brecken was often uninterested, or unwelcome. In the Blade, at least, perhaps he felt something of a kindred spirit even if she was, literally speaking, two people.

A steady glance once more at the dragon, so effortlessly supported by wind. One distinct advantage: an enemy could never hope to keep them both in sight.

towers of gold are still too little
The laughter was received… poorly by the dragon. Even if it was just a snort, that the Lance dismissed so quickly the might of the dragons in this world stirred up nothing but anger in the golden one. And to make matters worse, his bondmate felt nothing but amusement at the whole thing, a quiet intrigue, possibly even an interest in wanting to know just how Brecken might stand against an attack by the dragons. But when Dramyrth made to do just that - flapping his wings decidedly, letting a growl rumble from his chest as a precursor - Amaris swiftly suggested that here was not the time nor place for it.

And so the dragon merely flapped again, drifting from air current to air current, grumbling softly to himself over the injustice of it all. Go catch a fish, his bondmate suggested, and barely a moment later he had folded his wings to his side and pointed his nose downwards, towards the ocean, to hunt and pillage and plunder, and satiate the bloodlust his frustration had stirred.

Amaris watched him for a moment, before letting her attention shift to Brecken. It was part of the bond they shared, that they knew instinctively where the other was at all times, if not in a specific sense, at the very least in a general sense. She didn’t need her eyes on the dragon to know how far or near he was to her. The second laugh that came from the man, as he settled beside her, held a different tune to it - one that suggested they could indeed make an attempt at breaching the professional standing between them. And she let a smile linger a bit longer on her features as his taunt came back, as he questioned the sincerity of her words, and then made a comment that was in itself more another inquiry than an observation.

"The Dragoons were plenty exciting," a small shrug of her shoulders was given, as somewhere off the cliffside Dramyrth returned into view, wings spread, supported largely just by the strong winds once more. In his maw, the shiny, wriggling scales of a fish could be seen. With the snap of his neck, he threw it high up, and without further ceremony, scorched it black and swallowed it whole on its descent back down. Amaris largely ignored him.

"I found myself with a certain proclivity for permanently restraining individuals." she supplied, a knowing glance given to the man. "While the Dragoons made use of me, the chance to work with the Order was not one I was about to deny myself." And with that said, she looked at the Lance, at her colleague, letting her expression ask him what he had asked her - and how did you come to be here?

THE LION ISN'T SACRED WHEN NOT SLEEPING NEAR THE LAMB
The conversation proved a pleasant surprise, moreso by the minute. Brecken had only hoped to find a moment of peace out on the cliffs. Such peace he rarely felt with company, but if he must have a conversation partner he suspected Amaris was among the better choices in Stormbreak. Words flowed easily from her lips, and expression flowed easily across her face. Pleasant - inviting. Nice to know at least one other member of the Order wasn't an unreachable genius.

Did he feel that way about the others?

"Ah, yes. Troublemakers can't cause trouble if they're missing their heads. He said this lightly, his gaze only flicking for a moment to the bright burst of flame from the dragon's maw. Was it showing off? Like a puppy too long ignored? Or maybe it behaved this way all the time and Amaris was simply used to it.

"You know," he says, "I never understood why we didn't have more soldiers among us." Us being the Order, of course. "Plenty of thinkers and planners, and I'm sure Cian could kill anything he wanted to, but some of the others?" A vague, semi-conspiratorial shake of the head. "We're surrounded by danger and heresy on all sides. Might as well meet it where it's born, not wait for it to storm our gates." Maybe he was sidestepping the unasked question, the and what brought you to the Order? But how else could he answer it? They had more power than the Dragoons, more certainly than any single man. Brecken was a chained dog waiting to be loosed at anything even remotely resembling vermin. He liked that about himself. If only everyone realized the value in his attitude.

A smile touched her lips, transforming her face into something much softer than the questioning or bemused look of before. It was… nice to have someone who knew her line of work, and who didn't shrink away when facing it's full implications. So often she never fully admitted to others the full breadth of her position, the purpose of The Blade, due to the stigma attached to being good at one thing - death.

And she listened intently to his words too, as the dragon off the rocky shoreline trilled a colourful song, seemingly more satisfied and playful now that he had a full belly. Or perhaps he was buoyed by his bondmate's lightening emotions - perhaps it was a combination effect occurring to both of them.

"It's easy to forget the dangers of the world when one only has stories. Only we-" and here she too referred to the Other, "-have been out and about recently, only we believe and understand that the danger is very real." It was a classic case of being so safe for so long that the idea of anything ever going wrong was simply too hard for many to comprehend.

"As for facing the danger where it is born, well," she arched a brow at the man, her smiling transforming into something far more devious than before. "Isn't that what we're for?"

THE LION ISN'T SACRED WHEN NOT SLEEPING NEAR THE LAMB
But of course, that was what they were for — the two of them — such a paltry number when one paused to consider the world. Brecken possessed no shortage of confidence in his skills, but even he was no fool when it came to understanding the vastness of the world. And doing so only awoke in him a hunger, yawning and immense — a need to be out there, to be devouring it, reasserting their claim to righteousness. He laughed in answer to Amaris — not a mocking laugh but one of shared purpose. A purpose rarely asserted in the streets of Stormbreak.

Sometimes Brecken looked at them and found them so lacking.

"Of course," he agreed. "But the more the merrier, eh? I can't wait to be out of these walls." So he said, but a part of him would always love the surge of the sea, the glimmer and hum of the gods' breath all around him. It was, of course, this love which made him want to roam, this same love which drove him out beyond the walls in search of something to break apart. What was love for one's people, if it did not drive them to destroy all others?

"So easy to get complacent." This was, perhaps, the biggest sin one could commit — short of outright blasphemy. Brecken stood, remembering now the restless energy which had driven him down to the cliffs in the first place, and paced a bit up the walkway. "Do you think the wind here could support a person?" he asked, changing the subject entirely, though to him it seemed a natural progression of the conversation. He had heard things, and he could see the dragon held aloft with no effort on its part, but — Brecken considered. He had no desire to die in such a stupid way.

The Blade agreed - it would be easier to have more who were capable of thinking the same way they did, who had skills that let them dominate, subdue and eliminate their enemies. But she was also of the view that as long as they had enough, they would prevail. She just hoped they had enough.

The Dragoons were capable, and the rule of law was strictly enforced all over Stormbreak thanks to them. Amaris herself made sure of it - her 'rank' of the Blade entailed many things after all. They would defend their home against the evils of the world until their last breath of dragonfire, but were they made to invade the greater world? To go forth and eliminate that which existed in lands outside of their jurisdiction?

Perhaps it was simply her nature, but Amaris felt a more subtle approach was warranted - specific threats eliminated with exacting accuracy on the amount of force needed. "The Priest won't let complacency settle for long." It was Gideon's job, to inspire the masses, to rally support for the Order's initiatives, to ensure the fear for the danger out there was very real and present in the simpler minds of the general public.

The girl moved to rise with the man, the restlessness of the conversation catching - still the dragon floated on the updrafts off the edge of the cliff. If she was jilted by the change in subject, she didn't show it, her smile only lingering, her brow raising quizzically at the man. "This place is called the Falling, Brecken." It was a reminder given in teasing tones - in truth, Amaris had wondered the same thing, as had many a child who might bring their dragons to play over the edge.

"I think if you time it right," or have a dragon telling you when to jump, "it could support you, yes." Dramyrth filled the area with a colourful tune, the bond flooding with excitement that made a shiver run down Amaris' spine. With a glance of golden eyes to the Lance, she spread her arms wide, and backed up to the edge, standing on her toes, that her heels were facing the open air and rough sea below. "Ready to know?"

Without waiting, she promptly bounced on the balls of her feet and over the edge.

THE LION ISN'T SACRED WHEN NOT SLEEPING NEAR THE LAMB
If he found Amaris' cool rationality annoying, Brecken didn't show it. He was accustomed to it, by now — being told wait and calm down. So he tried, much as he longed for someone to share his view on things. She was right, of course. They were always right. He wouldn't dwell on it, but he would always feel the sting of his own impetuosity.

Her quiet reprimand elicited only a grin. Of course it is, said his sidelong glance. But don't you like to think we're above that? He was startled, though, by the music of the dragon's sudden cry. It did not seem to him a warning — rather, a noise he heard very rarely. It was almost musical, joyful, and it seemed to coincide with some change in Amaris. He was still watching the dragon warily when she posed the question, and he looked up in time only to see her disappear over the edge.

With a surprised, delighted laugh, he followed suit, hot on her heels. Unfolding below him was the roar of water, the bleak face of the cliffs. He caught it all in a rush: the sharp taste of the salty air, the glimmer of the dragon's wings ago, the roar of air against his eardrums. Then a hissing rush of warmth up from somewhere down below, and instead of toppling down, down into the waves, he was thrust back to land gracelessly on his rear, laughing all the while like a boy half his age.

"Do you think we should change the name?" he asked, more than a little punch drunk on adrenaline.

towers of gold are still too little
They might have been different souls, going at different paces, but their ultimate goal was the same - to eradicate their enemies, to protect their own. Differing techniques, differing temperaments, and yet here they were together, leaping over the edge of a cliff face to their potential doom and destruction.

But there were no panicked tones, no screams of terror or sorrowful dragoncries - only a laughter that was carried over and up through the great rushing of air. It buffeted and carried her slight form, delight and laughter abounding as he appeared a moment later, the wind lifting them both with a stomach-dropping sensation coiling through her. Dramyrth flew in close then - golden scales flashing before her, wingbeats adding to the wind the sea below pushed around her.

And she was delivered to the rocky shelf again, her form dumped without ceremony of grace, but somehow she contorted it to look intentional, completely premeditated, absolutely voluntary. Onto her rear was she also thrust, hands wrapped around her middle as she let the laughter flow. The dragon came in to land, crooning a low note - checking her over critically all the while, ensuring his bondmate's current state of exhilaration was not covering something more sinister.

"I don't think people would be open to renaming it the ass-landing," she quipped, the adrenaline pulsing through her too, the giddy grin very evident, as the Blade let herself go, and just enjoyed the moment, with barely a care for what the world thought of her.

THE LION ISN'T SACRED WHEN NOT SLEEPING NEAR THE LAMB
He is a child again — or what a child should be — laughing careless of everything else in the world. Thinking, for the first time in so long, of nothing except the moment and the breathless exhilaration of sharing adventure with another soul. No concern about what she thinks, about what anyone thinks. No concern about the future, about his tenuous grasp on it. No concern at all. When his laughter runs out, Brecken braces his hands behind him and sits, legs dangling out toward the emptiness beyond the walkway, and catches his breath. A fierce, sly sort of grin answers Amaris' retort. "I think it has a nice ring to it," he jokes, the laughter dancing still in his blue eyes.

With a sigh, Brecken quiets. Watches the dragon fuss. Thinks almost, in this hazy state of normalcy, that dragons seem a pleasant thing. A benevolent thing. He is looking sideways at another version of himself, a version in a different universe, who came out of youth unscathed and hearty. A version of him who laughs freely, whose smiles are never forced. But in an instant that illusion is gone, and Brecken is only himself, the adrenaline cooling in his veins.

His posture closes in — subtly — arms coming forward now to rest on his knees, eyes scanning the emptiness below. There was a part of him, he thinks, that would not have cared if he had fallen. He doesn't want to know what that means. "You know," he says, and the words are at odds with the color of his thoughts. "I never would have guessed the resident assassin would be so much fun. We should do this again sometime." He is not sure what he means by it, if he means anything at all. It is a hollow offer, an expression of friendship given because he has seen other people do it. Because he read about such things in books when he was younger. Now he's calmed, he doesn't know if he actually does want to be alone with her again. That sliver of honesty, that moment where he was unguarded, that was dangerous, wasn't it? Were he someone else, where he somewhere else, it could be lethal.
